  • Beirut explosion: Drone footage shows devastating impact of explosion that killed 100 in Lebanon

Subscribe to the Evening Standard on YouTube:

Aerial video filmed Wednesday showed the full scale of the destruction caused by a massive explosion in Beirut.

Rescue operations continued as dawn broke in Lebanon's capital on Wednesday morning, hours after the blast which flattened much of the city's port.

More than 100 people were killed and 4,000 injured, with bodies buried in the rubble, officials said.

It was not clear what caused the blast, which struck with the force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake and was felt as far away as Cyprus more than 200 kilometers (180 miles) across the Mediterranean.

Lebanon's interior minister said it appeared that a large cache of ammonium nitrate in the port had detonated.

As you may have noticed, we like to blow stuff up on this channel. So when the International Red Cross approached us to collaborate on a video about nuclear weapons, we were more than excited.
Until we did the research. It turned out we were a bit oblivious off the real impact of nuclear weapons in the real world, on a real city. And especially, how helpless even the most developed nations on earth would be if an attack occurred today.
So hopefully this video demonstrates how extremely non fun a real world nuclear attack would be, without being too gruesome. This collaboration was a blast (no pun intended) and we want to say a huge thank you to the International Red Cross!

  • Lebanon: Aerial Footage of Beirut Explosion Aftermath

Aerial footage filmed, Wednesday, August 5, shows the devastation caused by a massive explosion in the Lebanese capital Beirut.
READ MORE: Rescue crews continued their search Wednesday for survivors of a powerful blast at the port in the Lebanese capital Beirut, as Prime Minister Hassan Diab declared a day of mourning in the country.

The explosion Tuesday devastated entire neighborhoods, killing more than 100 people and injuring at least 4,000 others, the Lebanese Red Cross said early Wednesday.

Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said the apocalyptic situation has left an estimated 300,000 people homeless.

Officials said they expected the number of victims to rise as crews worked their way through rubble of damaged buildings and people searched for missing family and friends.

  • Beirut Explosion: Aerial Video Reveals Full Extent of Damage

A massive explosion at Lebanon’s main port rocked Beirut, overwhelming hospitals dealing with the injured and dying. The blast was so large it blew out windows across the capital and was even heard from Cyprus.

Authorities say it was caused by highly explosive materials at the port, but didn’t say whether it was an accident or an attack. The casualty toll continued to climb through the night, with Sky News Arabia putting the number of dead at 78 in the early morning hours of Wednesday. The health minister had said around 11 p.m. that 67 people were killed and some 3,600 injured.

Video footage showed what appeared to be a fire, followed by crackling lights and then a much larger explosion as an enormous cloud of smoke rapidly engulfed the area around the Port of Beirut. Buildings in the area and miles away were severely damaged, including the electricity company and other government entities.

The price of oil climbed to the highest level in almost two weeks as the blast stoked fears over instability in the region. U.S. benchmark crude futures climbed 1.7%.

The aftermath of the explosion left people rushing for help on foot and motorbikes, some with blood streaming over their faces, outside a Beirut hospital. One hospital said it had taken in 400 people and others appealed for blood donations, saying they’d reached their capacity.

President Donald Trump said in Washington that U.S. military officials “seem to think it was an attack. It was a bomb of some kind.” He said he “met with some of our great generals and they just seem to feel that it was. This was not some kind of a manufacturing explosion type of event.”

U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo expressed his condolences and said in a statement, “We are closely monitoring and stand ready to assist the people of Lebanon as they recover from this tragedy.”

The explosion took place during the first of a two-day grace period that the government had given citizens before it reinforces a full lockdown with a curfew to contain the coronavirus epidemic after the country saw a major spike in cases in recent weeks.

Beirut and its suburbs are home to many embassies, nongovernmental organizations and most government entities and agencies as well as ministries and headquarters of political parties. The general secretary of the Kataeb Party, Nizar Najarian, was killed in the explosion. He was chairing a meeting for the party at its headquarters, near the site of the blast.

Debris has covered the entire port, damaging trucks and other shipping containers. Black smoke could still be seen billowing into the sky hours after the blast. The port receives handles 6 million tons of shipments a year and is the country’s main port.

Lebanon is reeling under its worst financial and economic crisis, with a sharp plunge in its local currency eroding purchasing power and throwing many into poverty and unemployment. The government is in talks with the International Monetary Fund for a $10 billion bailout and has tried to collect aid from Gulf countries, but to no avail.

Gulf countries are wary that any funds would be channeled to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group that’s listed by those countries and the U.S. as a terrorist group. The foreign minister resigned earlier this week, saying Lebanon could become a failed state.

A shortage of U.S. dollars has wreaked havoc on an economy almost completely reliant on imported goods. The central bank is using whatever is left of its reserves to subsidize the import of wheat, fuel and medicine and has recently said it would help import essential food items, albeit at a weaker exchange rate.

  • Beirut explosion: Lebanon PM says those responsible for deadly blast will “pay the price”

Lebanon Prime Minister Hassan Diab said Tuesday that those responsible for a deadly explosion in the Beirut that resulted in the deaths of at least 78 people would “pay the price.”

The blast shook the ground of the Lebanese capital, shattering windows and causing apartment balconies to collapse.

“What happened today won’t pass without accountability, those responsible will pay the price for what happened,” he said.

Diab also said more information about the “dangerous” warehouse near the Mediterranean port would be established in time.

Health Minister Hamad Hasan told Reuters on Tuesday that at least 78 people had died in the explosion and nearly 4,000 were injured.

  • Lebanon: Video Shows Home, Restaurant Damaged in Beirut Blast

At least 70 people are dead and more than 3,500 injured following a massive explosion that rocked Beirut, Tuesday, August 4, flattening much of the port, and damaging buildings across the capital.
READ MORE: At least 70 are dead and 3,500 injured after a massive explosion Tuesday rocked the port area of Beirut in what a Red Cross official called a “huge catastrophe.”

Much of the port was destroyed, and buildings and parked cars across the Lebanese capital were heavily damaged.

Ambulances carried the wounded away from the area hours after the blast. As night fell, the exact cause of the explosion was unknown.

A Lebanese television station said officials suspect highly explosive sodium nitrate stored at the port may have been involved. People reported seeing an orange-colored cloud hovering over the blast site. Experts say such clouds usually accompany explosions involving nitrates.

A massive explosion rocked Lebanon's capital of Beirut on Tuesday, flattening much of the port, damaging buildings across the city and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky.

Many were killed and over 3,000 people injured, with bodies buried in the rubble, officials said.

The cause of the blast was not immediately known, but initial reports suggested a fire had detonated a warehouse at the port.

  • Biggest Explosion of WWI - Lochnagar Crater France

    #TravelEurope #WW1 #LochnagarCrater
The Lochnagar mine south of the village of La Boisselle in the Somme département was an underground explosive charge, secretly planted by the British during the First World War, to be ready for 1 July 1916, the first day on the Somme. The mine was dug by the Tunnelling Companies of the Royal Engineers under a German field fortification known as Schwabenhöhe.

The British named the mine after Lochnagar Street, the trench from which the gallery was driven. The charge at Lochnagar was one of 19 mines that were dug under the German lines on the British section of the Somme front, to assist the infantry advance at the start of the battle.

The mine was sprung at 7:28 a.m. on 1 July 1916 and left a crater 98 ft (30 m) deep and 330 ft (100 m) wide, which was captured and held by British troops. The attack on either flank was defeated by German small-arms and artillery fire, except on the extreme right flank and just south of La Boisselle, north of the Lochnagar Crater. The crater has been preserved as a memorial and a religious service is held each 1 July.

  • Are MMA fighters paid enough in the Middle East | UFC update

Jorge Masvidal captured the UFC's BMF title in the main event of UFC 244 yesterday but today we look at why the Middle East is so important for this iconic sport

Let’s back up a little bit here. In April, the UFC and the Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced a five-year partnership that that will see it hold more events in the future. The UFC held its first events in the city in 2010 and 2014.

What works for Abu Dhabi is its infrastructure and facilities in addition to the huge youth population with discretionary income and an affinity for the sport. I’m not saying it – exec vice president Lawrence Epstein said it in an interview with us earlier.

Abu Dhabi Media and the UFC also announced a new broadcast partnership to provide access to all live UFC events and non-live programming as part of a multi-year agreement. In July, the announcement was followed by the unveiling of the ‘UFC Arabia’ app that includes live access to fights and hundreds of hours of programming.

Now let’s talk about the event that was held in September and its impact – the fight between Russian star Khabib Nurmagomedov and American Dustin Poirier.
According to STR’s preliminary September 2019 data for Abu Dhabi, the fight brought about market's largest daily increase in occupancy (up 33.1 percent) on September 7, the day of the fight.
The same day saw the second-highest daily jump in revenue per available room (RevPAR) - up by 37.3 percent.
And Khabib alone earned more than $6 million following his victory over Poirier at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi – that is, nearly $500,000 for every minute in the ring
For his last fight, against Irishman Conor McGregor, Nurmagomedov was reportedly paid $2 million, the bulk of which was a share from pay-per-view broadcasts and other sources.

    But there is a problem.

Not everyone gets paid this kinda salary. For the vast majority of MMA fighters who are based in the Middle East, payouts like that are little more than a pipe dream.
Dubai-based Russian-Lebanese fighter Roman Wehbe knows all about fighting for peanuts, or $1,500 to be exact.
He is one of the Middle East’s top heavyweights, having started in combat sports in the underground world of bare-knuckle fights in the United Kingdom. He took part in his first MMA fight in 2006 and has since stepped into the octagon 15 times.
He says the highest pay check for most fighters working with local promoters in the GCC is approximately $3,000 per fight.
While local fighters are eligible for a $500 submission or performance bonus, the UFC’s performance bonuses alone amount to $50,000 – four of which were handed out following the Abu Dhabi event.
For each of the sport’s millionaires like Nurmagomedov or Irish arch-rival Conor McGregor, dozens, if not hundreds, of fighters barely scrape by, forced to prepare for fights while juggling the demands of a second job, devoid of the lucrative contracts, hefty bonuses and training opportunities that MMA’s minority of stars depend on.
Websites such as The Sports Daily estimate that several undercard fighters at UFC 242 earned as little as $13,500.
Now this is a real problem and it is quite sad to be honest.
The absence of regional fighters from the UFC means it is more difficult for those like Wehbe to pursue opportunities. Ahead of a fight, or sometimes almost the same day as the event, Wehbe has to work up to eight hours a day and train for at least three or four hours. It’s not the training that’s the problem, he says, it’s the recovery process.
Promoters overestimate the potential profit from fights, run out of funds and ultimately disappear.
2 examples - Amman-based MMA promotion Desert Force abruptly halted operations in 2017 with no prior notice just weeks ahead of a scheduled event, leaving fighters with no contracts, while Beirut-based Phoenix Fighting Championship has also been liquidated.

Marketing is huge problem. Full-time training and international promotions, to Middle East fighters would not only boost their performance but also increase the popularity of MMA in the Arab world.

Except for the handful, you don’t see a lot of MMA fighters living a similar life like other football, tennis, cricket athletes.

But at least UFC is trying hard to promote the sport and the athletes here. UFC promotes local events through digital platform FightPass on its mobile app, and increasingly invites global fighters to visit and train at its $14m, 2,787 sq m UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas or sister facility in Shanghai.
But the UFC alone is not capable of hosting the number of events needed to sustain a profitable MMA industry in the Middle East

All I’m trying to ask is – where all you local promoters at? These fighters need you guys now!!

  • Festival of Ideas 2019 How to Thrive in the Age of Acceleration

The world is being reshaped today by three simultaneous accelerations – in technology, globalisation and climate change. To thrive in today’s world – as a worker, a company, a community or a nation state – requires learning how to adapt to all three at once. Thomas Friedman’s lecture will explore how we undertake those adaptations, who is doing it well and what it means for education, politics, business and geopolitics. It’s a talk the author describes as ‘a brief theory of everything!’.

This public lecture is part of the Festival of Ideas (FOI) 2019, the inaugural flagship event of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. The theme for FOI 2019 is Governance for the Future: Asia's Perspective.
