This is an in-depth film of a voyage through the Arctic Ocean ice to the geographic North Pole on the nuclear powered icebreaker '50 Years of Victory'. Leaving the North Pole, we visited Franz Josef Land before sailing back to Murmansk. Along the way we saw polar bears, walruses, seals and birds.

'50 Years of Victory' (50 лет Победы / 50 Let Pobedy) is the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world. She is an engineering marvel and is powered by 2 nuclear reactors that produce 75,000 horsepower giving her the ability to break through ice up to 2.8 meters thick or nearly 10 feet of ice.

The 50 Years of Victory has an endurance of 5 years before she needs refuelling with new uranium. The reactors eliminate greenhouse gas emissions that are characteristic of ships burning fossil fuels.

This video was shot in the Arctic Ocean in March 2018. For 7 days our crew passed through the Barents Sea to Karsky around the Novaya Zemlya archipelago on the nuclear icebreaker Yamal - we saw the northern lights and polar bears, watched the ships stuck in the ice being towed, and were very cold.

In the video you can see two Russian icebreakers - “50 Years of Victory” and “Yamal” with a capacity of 75,000 horsepower and a distinctive shark mouth, which appeared on it in 1994 during one of the children's humanitarian programs. According to legend, someone suggested drawing a smiling shark mouth on the nose to make it more fun for children. At present, Russia has the only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet in the world. They are used to provide wiring ships in the ices of the Northern Sea Route in the freezing ports of the Russian Federation, research expeditions, rescue operations and tourist cruises.

In addition to the extreme weather conditions, the shooting was complicated by the fact that the icebreaker was always in motion. And if the drone was flying over the radar tower, the recording file was damaged.

  • Interview with the Captain of 50 Years of Victory nuclear-powered icebreaker

    6:03

Speaking of the North Pole, no one can talk more authoritative than Captain Dmitry Lobusov, with 32 years of icebreaker experience, including 14 years as captain of nuclear-powered vessels and a dozen years as master of 50 Years of Victory. We were lucky to get this rare interview with the man who has been to 90º north more than most people on earth.

Poseidon Expeditions offers the unique opportunity to reach the geographic North Pole each summer during our three consecutive icebreaker cruises. A round-trip voyage from Murmansk also features two days exploring the enigmatic High Arctic archipelago of Franz Josef Land. What makes this cruise even more special than the destination itself is the vessel. 50 Years of Victory is the most powerful nuclear icebreaker in the world, with the capability to generate 75,000 horsepower and crush multi-year ice layers up to three meters thick.

50 Years of Victory was not intended to be a tourist ship. Rather, the icebreaker was purpose-built to pilot scientific and cargo ships to hard-to-reach areas of the Arctic and along the Northeast Passage. It is just during the short summer months when adventurers get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to travel aboard this real working icebreaker to the geographic North Pole. In this video, Captain Dmitry Lobusov answers the most interesting questions about the vessel and the cruise itself:

00:27 What makes the 50 Years of Victory icebreaker so special?
00:59 What is the thickest ice the ship can break?
01:41 What makes cruises to the North Pole so attractive for travelers?
02:47 Are nuclear icebreakers safe for the environment?
03:53 Ice in the Arctic continues to decline. Does this make it easier to reach the North Pole?
04:30 Is there any other vessel that can reach the North Pole?

Have more questions about the icebreaker or the cruise? Leave them in the comments below, or join our North Pole expedition cruise aboard 50 Years of Victory and you will have the opportunity to address them directly to Captain Lobusov with Poseidon’s special open bridge policy!

  • Onboard the Massive LENIN: Worlds First Nuclear Icebreaker Murmansk Worlds Largest Arctic City

    6:31

Lenin, the world's first nuclear icebreaker, maintains its dignity while quietly anchored in Murmansk world's largest Arctic city.

Operating for 30 years as a state-of-the-art icebreaker in the Soviet naval fleet, the Lenin became the first nuclear-powered civilian ship in addition to being the first atomic icebreaker. This massive boat carved its path through the unforgiving waters and ice of the Arctic Ocean and the Barents Sea to create vital shipping lanes on the northern coast of the Soviet Union, now Russia.

Not surprisingly the Lenin is the city's most popular tourist site. Matt receives the tour to get a hands-on experience of what is a family-friendly activity in Murmansk.

    Questions Answered:
    - what was the world's first nuclear-powered civilian ship?
    - how big was the Lenin, the first atomic icebreaker?
    - how large are Russian shipping routes?
    - what tourist activities are there in Murmansk?

NS 50 Let Pobedy, translated as 50 Years of Victory or Fiftieth Anniversary of Victory is a Russian Arktika-class nuclear-powered #icebreaker. October 4, 1989 was the launch date of project no.10521 at Baltic Works, Leningrad, #USSR. Originally the vessel was named NS Ural. In 1994 work was halted due to lack of funds, so the actual 50th anniversary of Victory Day, found the icebreaker in abandoned state. However, in 2003 construction was restarted.

Since 1989 the nuclear-powered icebreakers have also been used for tourist purposes carrying passengers to the North Pole. The Fiftieth Anniversary of #Victory contains an accommodation deck customised for tourists.

Quark Expeditions chartered the ship for expeditions to the North Pole in 2008.

  • Russia to build futuristic nuclear-powered icebreaker to keep Northern Sea Route open - TomoNews

    5:53

ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA — Russia has unveiled a new nuclear-powered icebreaker that is designed to keep the Northern Sea Route open all year round.

Russia’s new nuclear-powered icebreaker, known as Leader, will exceed 200 meters in length and will be about 50 meters wide. It would be capable of plowing through 2-meter-thick ice at a speed of 29 kph and capable of cutting through ice up to 4.5 meters thick.

It is expected that the new icebreaker would lead tankers carrying liquefied natural gas weighing up to 300,000 tonnes to pass through the Northern Sea Route in any season.

Russia launched the world’s biggest icebreaker, the Arktika, in June. The icebreaker is powered by two nuclear reactors and can break through 4-meter-deep ice.
