  • ???????? earthrise - Ladakhs Ice Stupa Project

    11:51

All life depends on snow in Ladakh, with the high-altitude desert region receiving only 50mm of rainfall a year. Agriculture relies mainly on the water that comes from snow and glacial melt, but with rising temperatures and changing weather patterns, most villages in the area are experiencing severe water shortage.

Since 1980 the average temperature has increased by more than two degrees, with a huge effect on the local environment. The glaciated area in Ladakh has been lost, meaning that glaciers are much smaller and in some areas have disappeared altogether.

Sonam Wangchuck has been on a mission to help villagers to adapt to the changing climate through his ice stupa concept. The ice stupa builds upon a simple idea - by directing glacial melt or water travelling downstream through a pipe to a location nearby. This water is then channelled vertically, freezing and forming cone-like structures in temperatures reaching minus 20 degrees Celsius [≈ room temperature].

Russell Beard travels to Ladakh to join Wangchuck in building an ice stupa and explores how this innovative solution is helping the local community.

    3:54

In the Ladakh region of northwestern India's Himalayas, residents have taken the fight for water into their own hands. With glaciers melting and retreating because of climate change, the impending drought threatens to destroy their livelihoods. To solve the problem, engineer Sonam Wangchuk creates artificial ice stupas, which melt when water is urgently needed for farming.

    WikiDetails:
Sonam Wangchuk (born 1 September 1966) is an Indian engineer, innovator and education reformist.[4][5][6][7][8][9] He is the founding-director of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), which was founded in 1988 by a group of students who had been in his own words, the ‘victims’ of an alien education system foisted on Ladakh.[10][11] He is also known for designing the SECMOL campus that runs on solar energy and uses no fossil fuels for cooking, lighting or heating.[12][13][14]

Wangchuk was instrumental in the launch of Operation New Hope in 1994, a collaboration of government, village communities and the civil society to bring reforms in the government school system.[15] He invented the Ice Stupa technique that creates artificial glaciers, used for storing winter water in form of conical shaped ice heap

Ice Stupa is a form of glacier grafting technique that creates artificial glaciers, used for storing winter water (which otherwise would go unused) in the form of conical shaped ice heaps. During summer, when water is scarce, the Ice Stupa melts to increase water supply for crops. Ice Stupa was invented by Sonam Wangchuk in Ladakh (India) and the project is undertaken by the NGO Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh. Launched in October 2013, the test project started in January 2014 under the project name The Ice Stupa project. On 15 November 2016, Sonam Wangchuk was awarded the Rolex Awards for Enterprise for his work on Ice Stupa.

  • Ladakh : Artificial Ice Stupas are the newest tourist attraction, Watch | Oneindia News

    2:04

Upon listening the name of ‘Leh,’ we are reminded of Buddhist sites and trekking terrains in the serene and picturesque lap of Himalayas. But this time, its artificial ice stupas which are making tourists flock to the beautiful high-desert region. The innovative manmade ice stupas here, has been created to conserve winter waste water as an alternate to counter water scarcity during spring season. The natural glacier formed out of winter snowfall on higher reaches of mountain serves as main source of water supply in this region for farmers. However, global warming resulted in shrinking of natural glaciers, thus, farmers in Ladakh face acute water shortage for irrigation, especially during spring. Renowned engineer and innovator Sonam Wangchuk made his mind to battle woes of the locals, and took up this task. The excess water from stupas is stored in a tank constructed below them and about 5,000 trees planted on the surrounding barren land. Sonam Wangchuk has already bagged Rolex Award for Enterprises in 2016 for building ice stupas to conserve water.

  • CHADAR TREK 2020 PART 1/2 | SHANTI STUPA | ICE STUPA | KHARDUNGLA | LEH | LADAKH

    22:02

Leh is a Beautiful town with beautiful people.
In Summer Leh is crowded with tourists from all round the India, but it total silence in Winter. we could see some trekkers, Army Personals and Local.
As soon as we reached Leh , got information from Flight Captain about the Weather -10 °C. Initially it did not feel too cold, but as we got out of Airport it was too cold.

Leh is about an altitude of 3,500 meter(11,500 feet) above sea level. As we came by Flight so there it was a sudden Temperature and Altitude change.
So, Initial three days are for our Body to adapt to these climatic conditions and Acclimatize(This is done to avoid any case of Acute Mountain Sickness).

    * The 3 Network Service Providers which works in Leh as of Feb 2020: Airtel, Jio and BSNL Postpaid Connections(Prepaid don't work in Leh).

Day 1: No Activity, complete rest; getting body adjusted with the temperature change from 8 °C to -10 °C. We were at Guest house only and took short stroll.

Day 2: Visited Shanti Stupa, getting body in action with sub-zero temperature.
Went to Market also; If you forgot to get some of the Trekking Gear or Warm Clothes, you can get them in Mall Road or in Old Leh Market.
I would suggest, you should consider Old Leh Market also before buying anything from Mall Road.
Below is the list of Items we could find at Leh Market and Much more:
Camera/Mobile Gears : If you forgot some Gears for you Mobile or Camera you can get them here.
Trekking Gear : Trekking Pole, Bandana, Track Pants ,etc..
Warm Clothes : Warmers, Balaclava, Woolen Socks, Woolen Caps.
Gumboots : Check the Type of Boots you are Buying, it should be of material which can withstand negative temperature.
Medicines : Any Medicine which you would need.

Day 3: After the Breakfast, we started for Medical Test(Consist of Blood Pressure and Oxygen Level checkup) and Trek Registration.
Medical Test is Mandatory and you have to pass it to be allowed to go for Trek. If you fail the test, the officials give you some time to get normal and then takes test again.
If you still fail the test, then they will ask you to come the next day for same test. And if you fail that too, which is very rare then you will not be allowed to go on the trek.

After Medical Test and Trek Registration, we had some time so visited Khardungla.
Khardungla is one the Highest Roads in the World at an Altitude of 18,000 feet.
Air is so thin here, that people are advised to not stay here for more that 30-45 minutes. As breathing gets very difficult here(Altitude difference 11,500 to 18,000 Feet )

Good luck and have a Safe, Happy and Trip full of Enjoyment.

    25:21

Estimates say that by 2030, if we carry on as we are, the world will only have 60 percent of the water it needs. In India's Ladakh, rising temperatures are leading to glacial melt and water shortages in the mountains of the Himalayas. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is also sturggling as it experiences severe drought.

earthrise travelled to both Ladakh and Jordan to understand the local solutions being applied to help ease the increasingly worrying water problems.

    Ladakh's Ice Stupas

All life depends on snow in Ladakh, with the high-altitude desert region receiving only 50mm of rainfall a year. Agriculture and survival depends mainly on the water that comes from snow and glacial melt, but with rising temperatures and changing weather patterns, most villages in the area are experiencing severe water shortage.

    Water Wise Women

Jordan is going through a severe drought. Pressure on water supplies is being aggravated by the presence of two million refugees who have fled the conflict in neighbouring Syria.

Groundwater reserves are being depleted at an alarming rate and, on top of that, around 40 percent of the water distributed to homes across the country is lost through illegal wells and faulty pipes.

Through the Water Wise Women's initiative, local ladies are being trained to be plumbers. They are now able to deal themselves with any leakages in their own homes and communities, thereby saving water in a more timely manner.

Amani Zain visited Jordan to learn about the water initiative that is putting women at the heart of efforts to combat water scarcity.

One hundred percent of Iceland's electricity needs are generated from renewable sources, including geothermal energy.

With the aim of cutting emissions even further, a unique carbon capture system called CarbFix is being pioneered at the Hellsheidi geothermal power plant in western Iceland.

Carbon dioxide emissions are captured, mixed with water and injected into the ground. Through this process, the CO2 is transformed into a mineral called calcite within just six months. This solid form of CO2 storage is seen as one of the most effective ways of preventing the gas from entering the atmosphere.

  • Unique ice-stupa cafe attracts tourists in Leh’s village

    1:57

Leh (Jammu & Kashmir), Mar 18 (ANI): Unique Ice Café, a restaurant built inside a giant Ice Stupa in Gya Meeru village is attracting thousands of visitors including locals and tourists in the isolated village located on the Leh-Manal National Highway. Three local youth namely Jigmet Tundup, Nawang Punchok and Sonam Chosdup decided to build this unique kind of Ice Stupa in Ladakh this year. The winter snowfall in Ladakh forms natural glaciers on the higher reaches of Mountains which melt slowly during summer and melt water is use for irrigation and drinking but due to the global warming, shrinking glacier forces the people to look for an alternate ways to conserve water during winter. Manmade Ice Stupas are created by allowing water to fall on cone shaped net structures from a certain height and as the water starts freezing on the net, more water is added to increase the size of cone making the structures to look like Buddhist Stupas. Considerable height is maintained between the source of water and artificial Stupas which helps to develop enough pressure to sprinkle water from certain height on the Stupas.
