    An automatic transmission(AT) is a transmission system in which selection of appropriate gear ratio need by the vehicle is an automatic process operated by the accelerator and brake pedal. The lay shaft, main shaft and clutch shaft with parallel gear train arrangement is replaced with an epicyclic or sun and planetary gear train arrangement and also the manual clutch from manual power train is replaced with hydro-coupled clutch or torque converter which in turn removes the clutch pedal from the vehicle.

    The automatic transmission usually comes with p-parking, n-neutral, r-reverse, d-drive, s-speed,mode,Each mode is having infinite torque and speed ratios required by vehicle.

    Main Parts of Fully Automatic Transmission:

    1. Epicyclic gear train- It is also known as the sun and planetary gear arrangement,The parallel shaft gear train from manual transmission is replaced with more compact epicyclic gear train in automatic transmission that consists of –

    1. Annular or ring gear- A ring type gear with inner angular cut teethes and is placed at the outermost position in epicyclic gearbox, inner teethes of annular gear is meshed with the the planet gears at the outer point.

    2. Sun gear- It is the gear having angular teethes which are in constant mesh with the planet gears at the inner point, The sun gear is connected to the torque convertor shaft.

    3. Planet gears – Small pinion gears which not only rotates about their own axis but also revolve around the sun gear.

    4. Planet carrier- It is the carrier over which the axis of the planet gears is mounted and is connected with the final output shaft.

    5. Brake or clutch bands- Fixing mechanism used to fix any one from the above in order to attain required gear ratio.

    2. Hydraulic system- It is the system of automatic transmission that contains oil pumps, governor and hydraulic valves that controls the brake or clutch band by sending pressurised fluid through the valve body in order to control the epicyclic gearbox, The band are connected to the hydraulic system through the shift valve and the output shaft is connected to the hydraulic system through the governor used.

    3. Torque convertor– The clutch from the manual transmission is replaced with the torque convertor that uses pressurised fluid for the engagement and disengagement of the engine output, The torque convertor is operated by the accelerator pedal.

    The torque convertor has 3 main parts –

    1. Impeller – It is the part of torque convertor that is connected with the engine output shaft and causes the pressurised fluid to flow inside the torque convertor when the engine starts.

    Impeller has angular cut vanes that causes rotation of the fluid.

    2. Turbine – It is the part of torque convertor that is connected to the transmission input shaft and transmits engine’s power to the transmission by the help of rotating pressurised fluid.

    Turbine has opposite cut angular vanes that catches the fluid sent by the impeller which in turn causes rotation of the transmission input shaft.

    3. Stator – It is the intermediate device having angular cut vanes used to direct the fluid from impeller to the the turbine.

    Working :

    The working of automatic transmission is totally different from the manual transmission as no clutch pedal and no continuous shifting of gears is required in this transmission system.

    Drive mode:

    It is the forward drive mode which consists the different gear ratios from high torque to medium speed, When this mode is selected and if the vehicle is in its steady state then by sensing the accelerator pedal by hydraulic system or electronic control unit the input is sent to epicyclic gearbox which in turn locks the annular gear with the help of bands and high torque or first gear ratios are obtained.

    When the vehicle starts moving and attaining the accelerator pedal input from the hydraulic system or electronic control device is again sent to the epicyclic gearbox which in turn activates the bands which in turn locks the sun gear and medium speed or second gear ratios are obtained.

    Reverse mode:

    When reverse mode is selected the accelerator pedal input is sent to the epicyclic gearbox by hydraulic system or ecu which in turn activates the bands and the bands locks the planet gear carrier, Which reverses the direction of the output shaft which in turn reverse the direction of the vehicle.

    Parking mode:

    When this mode is selected the the latch mechanism locks the drive wheel which in turn prevents the vehicle from moving.

    Neutral mode:

    When neutral mode is selected the turbine shaft or transmission input shaft is disconnected from the engine output or impeller shaft and the neutral gear is achieved.

    Come see how a tank works! In this video we're going to look specifically at the American M1A2 Abrams tank. The tank weighs 68 US Tons and can go up to 42 miles per hour. Parts of the tank include the caterpillar tracks, the wheels, the hull, and the turret. The caterpillar tracks are used to displace the weight of the tank allowing it cross rough terrain. The tank holds a crew of 4 - the driver, gunner, commander and the loader. The driver is up front and the other 3 are in the turret. The engine is in the back of the tank, it's an AGT-1500 which is powered by jet fuel. The main gun fires shells at about 3500mph. It can hit a target 2 miles away. There are a few countries besides the USA that use variants of the M1 Abrams tank. M1A2 Abrams tank continues to be the main battle tank for the United States military.

    I apologize for not including metric units in the video. I normally include both metric and imperial but this video I got lazy. (and yes, even as an American I agree our system is pretty wonky????)
    I made a mistake with the smoke grenade launchers in the video. They don't emit smoke directly - they shoot out grenades around the tank and then those grenades emit smoke.

    The gearbox is the second stage in the transmission system, after the clutch. It is usually bolted to the rear of the engine , with the clutch between them. Modern cars with manual transmissions have four or five forward speeds and one reverse, as well as a neutral position.

    Cars need transmissions because of the physics of the gasoline engine. ... The transmission allows the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels to change as the car speeds up and slows down. You shift gears so the engine can stay below the redline and near the rpm band of its best performance.

    Most modern gearboxes are used to increase torque while reducing the speed of a prime mover output shaft (e.g. a motor crankshaft). This means that the output shaft of a gearbox rotates at a slower rate than the input shaft, and this reduction in speed produces a mechanical advantage, increasing torque.

    To be very precise, Gearbox is a mechanical device used for torque increase/decrease via speed reduction/increase. It consists of two or more gears with one of the gears driven by the motor. The output speed of the gear box will be inversely proportional to gear ratio

    The transmission is a basic part of your car. It is mounted directly on the engine and converts the engine’s combustion power to momentum which drives the wheels.

    How Differential Works in Hindi with Animation :

    How Automatic Transmission Works :

    To effect a gear change, selecting first gear, for example, the driver depresses the clutch, disengaging the input shaft. Using the shift lever, the driver selects first gear, and the linkage moves the shift fork to connect the 1st-2nd locking collar with 1st gear, locking it to the output shaft. Now, when the clutch is released, engaging the input shaft, the output shaft turns because 1st gear is locked to the output shaft by the locking collar.

    As the driver speeds up, selecting 2nd gear simply involved repeating the process, but moving the shift lever to 2nd gear. The shift shaft moves the shift fork to disengage 1st gear and engage 2nd gear. Releasing the clutch engages the input shaft again, this time routing power through 2nd gear. Changing to 3rd gear involves using a second shift linkage, shift fork, and locking collar, this one between 3rd and 4th gears.

    Because the counter shaft and output shaft turn at different speeds, moving from 1st to 2nd gear, trying to engage a higher gear while the vehicle is moving slower would be like trying to turn the shaft at two different speeds, which is impossible. Synchronizer rings are like tiny clutches, using friction to bring the locking collar and the gear to the same speed, at which point they easily mesh and power can be reapplied.

    In mechanical engineering, a gear ratio is a direct measure of the ratio of the rotational speeds of two or more interlocking gears. As a general rule, when dealing with two gears, if the drive gear (the one directly receiving rotational force from the engine, motor, etc.) is bigger than the driven gear, the latter will turn more quickly, and vice versa. We can express this basic concept with the formula Gear ratio = T2/T1, where T1 is the number of teeth on the first gear and T2 is the number of teeth on the second.

    The clutch is a disc in your motorcycle that is able to connect and disconnect engine torque from the transmission. This connect and disconnect is what can make smooth riding possible. Just like anything on a motorcycle, the clutch can be susceptible to premature wear and even failure. Shifting gears without using the clutch is bad for the internal components on a motorcycle. Although clutchless shifting is possible, it could damage the transmission and/or cause premature wear on the clutch and should only be done during emergencies.

    Types of Gearbox in Automobile :

    SLIDING MESH GEARBOX :

    The transmission, for instance, is one of the most important components on a motorcycle. It’s how we get power out of the engine and out to the wheels. The transmission is made up of gears and rings. As the motorcycle upshifts or downshifts, new gear ratios are selected, and synchro gears inside the transmission move to help provide an efficient transfer of power.

    With power being output by the engine and input to the transmission, there needs to be a way to connect the output and the input in a way that doesn’t load the engine excessively or transmission too abruptly. The clutch is the middle man that makes shifting possible.

    Placed between the output of the crank and input of the transmission, the clutch is a large flat plate that is made up of various different kinds of friction materials. Its goal is to allow the torque that is being output to mesh and smoothly transfer to the any output ratios.

    Because the clutch is sort of the middle man in this order of operations, it’s made of a material that will wear down. This means that excessive wear will be placed on the clutch, and not the gears of the transmission where the wear was intended.

  • What is a Differential? | How Differential Works in Hindi with Animation

    The differential is a device that splits the engine torque two ways, allowing each output to spin at a different speed. The differential is found on all modern cars and trucks, and also in many all-wheel-drive (full-time four-wheel-drive) vehicles. These all-wheel-drive vehicles need a differential between each set of drive wheels, and they need one between the front and the back wheels as well, because the front wheels travel a different distance through a turn than the rear wheels.

    Part-time four-wheel-drive systems don't have a differential between the front and rear wheels; instead, they are locked together so that the front and rear wheels have to turn at the same average speed. This is why these vehicles are hard to turn on concrete when the four-wheel-drive system is engaged.

    When a car is driving straight down the road, both drive wheels are spinning at the same speed. The input pinion is turning the ring gear and cage, and none of the pinions within the cage are rotating -- both side gears are effectively locked to the cage.

    When a car makes a turn, the wheels must spin at different speeds.

    The differential is based on the principle of sun and planet gears. This pinion gear set is mounted within a carrier, and is free to rotate. The road wheels are connected to the pinion gears and the drive is sent via the carrier, which rotates when the car starts moving.

    On a straight road, the planet gears within are stationary, although the gears themselves experience radial motion within the carrier they are connected to. They begin to rotate on their individual axes in corners, while still also moving around within the differential carrier.

    This ‘dual’ rotation accounts for the speed difference in corners: one axle can ‘slow’ and the other can ‘speed up’ – the resultant driving force is the same, but it’s now split unequally between the two wheels.
