  • The Origins Of The Viking Raiders | Last Journey Of The Vikings | Timeline

    50:06

Nearly 1,000 years ago, the Vikings left Scandinavia and settled across Europe - giving their name to Normandy along the way - before their Norman descendants seized the English throne at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. But what do we really know about them? By combining expert analysis with compelling drama, 'The Last Journey of the Vikings' (Swedish title: 'Vikingarnas sista resa') tells a new and often surprising story about this complex people.

  • Ancient Norse Vikings | History Documentary

    47:47

Popular, modern conceptions of the Vikings—the term frequently applied casually to their modern descendants and the inhabitants of modern Scandinavia—often strongly differ from the complex picture that emerges from archaeology and historical sources. A romanticized picture of Vikings as noble savages began to emerge in the 18th century; this developed and became widely propagated during the 19th-century Viking revival.[4][5] Perceived views of the Vikings as alternatively violent, piratical heathens or as intrepid adventurers owe much to conflicting varieties of the modern Viking myth that had taken shape by the early 20th century. Current popular representations of the Vikings are typically based on cultural clichés and stereotypes, complicating modern appreciation of the Viking legacy.

  • The Great Viking Invasion Of Denmark | The Last Journey Of The Vikings | Timeline

    50:01

This landmark, high-end drama-doc tells the story of why Vikings chose to leave Denmark. With the help of dramatic re-creations and CGI, leading academics examine their actions and explain how cultural integration and the influence of Christianity allowed them to play a huge part in transforming Europe into what it is today.

  • Norway: Land of Fjords, Islands and Vikings | Free Documentary Nature

    50:50

This film shows Norway at its finest and most beautiful. Only if the weather was fine, we switched the record button on our camera. The result is a touching documentary about this breathtaking country.

The film shows primeval landscapes, fjords, glaciers, culture and animals in the typical clear, dust free lights of the northern hemisphere. The warm Gulf Stream creates a mild climate even to the north of the arctic circle. So agriculture and live-stock breeding is possible where one expects strong winters and cold summers.

At some of the slopes of the fjords even strawberries, cherries and apples grow. Only the hinterland in the far north is covered in deep snow during the winter until Easter. But the Sami and the reindeers are pretty well adapted to these conditions.

  • What Life Was Really Like As A Viking In 800 AD

    11:00

Pop culture and Hollywood have had a long fascination with the lives of Vikings. Movies like The Vikings and The 13th Warrior have depicted Vikings as heroic warriors who braved insurmountable obstacles in search of new lands and treasure.

But pop culture and Hollywood have often got a lot of things wrong about Vikings. First of all, they never wore horned helmets, and the lives of Vikings in Scandinavia were harsh. They lived in lands that were not suited for farming and went on long raids because they wanted to find fertile land to farm. The majority of Vikings were farmers and many that went on raids died at sea because the voyages were dangerous. Here are more details of Viking life in 800 AD.

In which John Green teaches you about Vikings! That's right, one of our most requested subjects, the Vikings, right here on Crash Course. So what's the deal with Vikings? Well, the stuff you've heard about them may not be true. The Vikings weren't just pagan raiders striking terror into the hearts of defenseless European Christendom. They were some of the greatest travelers of their time, and they weren't always traveling to steal. In a lot of cases, they were traveling to trade. John will teach you about Viking trade goods, Norse Mythology, and yes, there will be blood, guts, and dragons. OK?

  • Rollo and the Viking Colony of Normandy - documentary

    13:40

Documentary on Rollo, the Viking founder of Normandy. As the Carolingian Empire fell apart, a new power would come to emanate across the Latin world from the Duchy of Normandy. The Normans, who would become Christendom’s chief crusaders, strangely, were rooted in the heathen Viking raiders that plagued France for generations. It all began with a Norse chieftain, a follower of Odin – Rollo, a seafarer from Scandinavia. Rollo the Viking, and the Norman colony of northwestern France, is one of the most fascinating and important developments of the medieval era.

  • Units of History - Viking Berserker DOCUMENTARY

    23:03

A military history documentary on the Berserkers who served as famous warriors in the Viking Army. Get your free trial of MagellanTV here: It's an exclusive offer for our viewers: an extended, month-long trial, FREE. MagellanTV is a new kind of streaming service run by filmmakers with 2,000+ documentaries! Check out our personal recommendation and MagellanTV’s exclusive playlists:

In this history documentary we explore one of the most famous units of Viking History, the berserkers. We begin by describing the main traits of a Viking berserker. The first is their animalistic qualities. This is actually tied to the broad trend of animal-human hybrids which appear in civilizations across the world. The Berserkers appear to have emerged from the norse version of this tradition with their sagas being filled with many instances of norse gods, legendary figures, and mortals transforming into all kinds of animals. The berserkers were just a subset of this group.

One of the next qualities of a Berserker was their rage, known as the berserkergang. This involved the viking warrior devolving into a rage filled state which might see them begin to bite their teeth and howl. The norse saga tradition has many tales of how this berserker rage led to much bloodletting of friend and foe. This leads us to the next quality of the berserker, their rejection by the community. This is a result of the way their violence threatened cultural taboos of loyalty and honor.

With this established we then talk about the viking weapons and armor which would have been used by the berserkers. Berserker armor is usually described as consisting of nothing but a shield however we speculate that they likely wore better gear, especially if they served in a noble's retinue. We then talk about training, initiation rights, and battle tactics. Finally we conclude by looking at their service history in viking warfare across the years.

Stay tuned for more content on the vikings and check out our videos on Assassin's Creed Valhalla where we will be exploring the world of ancient Scandinavia. Also keep an eye out for the portrayal of Berserkers in For Honor and other games to see if you can spot where legend and reality begin.

  • Is This The Most Important Viking Burial Site In Britain?

    11:40

Watch the full documentary on History Hit TV:

In 865 AD, England was invaded by the Great Heathen Army. The viking army was made up of a coalition of Scandinavian warriors mainly from Denmark and, legend has it, four of the five sons of Ragnar Lothbrok, including Halfdan Ragnarsson, Ivar the Boneless, Bjorn Ironeside and Ubba.

This was an army that would change Britain forever. It would lay siege to towns, attack monasteries and kill kings - the most famous of course being St Edmund, who was brutally beheaded by the Norse warriors in 869 AD.

Dan Snow was recently joined by bioarchaeologist and Viking specialist Cat Jarman on a road trip across England to retrace the path of this conquering Viking Army.

In this clip from documentary, Dan and Cat visit Repton in Derbyshire, which was one a royal and religious centre in the kingdom of Mercia. But several high profile viking burials on the site suggest it was almost extremely important to the invading northmen.

  • Solar Storm Proves Vikings Beat Columbus to Americas

    8:24

A massive solar storm in the year has helped prove the Vikings had crossed the Atlantic Ocean and settled in Canada by A.D. 1021, according to a study in the journal Nature.

Scientists already knew the solar storm occurred between A.D. 992 and 993 and were able to use a technique that measures increases in atmospheric radiocarbon concentration to correlate its impact on trees at the L'Anse aux Meadows site, on Newfoundland's northern peninsula, with later Viking activity.

The study reanalysed wood excavated from the site in the 1960s, which had been cut using metal Viking tools otherwise unknown in North America at that point.

It found distinctive marks in the tree rings from the solar storm, plus 28 annual growth rings formed after those marks.

Adding 28 years to A.D. 993 showed Vikings had to have been cutting those trees in the year A.D. 1021, which means they arrived in the Americas 471 years before Christopher Columbus, according to The Guardian.

Having established a presence in Iceland and Greenland before arriving at the L'Anse aux Meadows site, the Vikings likely travelled west to gather new raw materials, most notably wood, according to the study’s lead author.
