  • 15 Most Unique Bird Eggs In The World!

    17:14

Eggs are quite literally a fundamental requirement for life, and every living thing on the planet begins as a bunch of cells that replicate inside these miraculous structures. While we, as humans, emerge from our eggs before being born, most of the development of birds happens outside of the mother, so they are laid within calcium shells to protect them from the threats that come their way. They can be all shapes, sizes, and colors that you could imagine, so if you’re looking to egg-speriment with your breakfast, here are the 15 most unique bird eggs in the world….

    12. Horned Coot
The horned coot (Fulica cornuta) is a large, dark avian species measuring up to two feet (0.61 meters) long, and is endemic to the Andes of South America. It's a rare bird, typically only found in certain lakes set high in the mountains, amid barren and rocky habitats.

    11. Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
Female ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) begin building their nests after mating, at which point the male moves on with his life. This is unlike many other bird species, where males are often the sole nest-creators, or at least participate in the process. The species is also unusual because the female handles incubation and feeding chicks entirely on her own, with no help from the male.

    10. Wasp Nests
It’s not always great when you run into a wasp or a hornet’s nest. But if you look at it from a construction point of view, wasp nests are really impressive structures in nature. The American Museum of Natural History asked a curator to show off some of the specimens in the museum’s collection.

    9. Gyrfalcon
The gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) is a formidable predator and the world’s largest falcon species. They have the oldest raptor nests ever recorded!!
They spend most of their time in the Arctic, rarely leaving the confines of the northern latitudes they call home and only traveling as far south as the Canadian border, and just during the winter so it’s pretty hard to see one!!

    8. Weaver
Weaver birds (Ploceidae) build some of the animal kingdom’s most impressive and intricate nests, and they can get the job done very fast, sometimes even completing an entire nest in just a day! A male bird will start a nest using a single, long blade of grass or a piece of leaf, which he skillfully ties into a knot around a twig using his beak, and constructs a circular structure from there using materials like twigs, roots, grass, and leaves.

    7. Malleefowl
The malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata) is not that big, but this Australian chicken-sized bird builds one of the world’s largest nesting mounds, with the biggest known example measuring 15 feet (4.6 meters) high and 35 feet (10.7 meters) across, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. On average, however, these mounds measure roughly 10 feet (3 meters) across, 3.3 feet (1 meter) deep, and are about two feet (0.6 meters) above ground level. Still, bigger than me!!

    6. Cathedral Termite
Termites are famous for their “skyscrapers”. They build the tallest non-human structures in the world (proportionately speaking)! They have amazing home-building capabilities. National Geographic reports that with a single specimen typically being much smaller than a human pinky nail, it’s incredible that in groups of a million or more, termites often build mounds as high as 17 feet (5 meters), moving up to 550 pounds (250 kg) of soil in a single year.

    5. Hamerkop
The hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) is an all-brown bird with a long, flat crest on its head, giving it a hammer-like appearance, hence its name. This species, which lives in a variety of habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar, is also known for its massive, domed nests, which are the biggest of any avian species on the continent.

    4. Black Kite
Black kites (Milvus migrans) are a species of bird widely distributed throughout Europe. They’re known to build nests on trees, building ledges, and cliffs, often just feet apart from each other. Nests are primarily made from organic materials, like twigs and sticks, but when necessary, black kites get creative and improvise by incorporating man-made materials, namely garbage, in the form of plastic strips.

    3. Edible-Nest Swiftlet
Sometimes, the name says it all! Also called the white-nest swiftlet, the edible-nest swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus) is a small bird endemic to Southeast Asia, which builds its cliffside nests out of solidified saliva.

    2. European Bee-eater
Also called the Eurasian or gold bee-eater, the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is a bright, multicolored bird that breeds throughout southern Europe and parts of north Africa and west Asia.

    1. Bald Eagle
The bald eagle is an iconic North American species that is commonly regarded as a symbol of freedom, courage, truth, wisdom, and other core values that the United States was founded upon.

    8 - Cliff swallow
Cliff swallows build impressive mud nests on cliffs, but in urban areas, they may choose to build their nests against a tall wall with a rough texture.
It takes the swallow between one and two weeks to gather more than 1,000 mud pellets and build a new nest. During nesting season, its illegal to remove these nests in the US without a permit, but after breeding season, you can without needing a permit.

    7 - Caddisfly Larvae
When these insects are fully grown, their architectural skills are nothing special, it’s in their larval stage that they show their incredible skill as an architect. Caddisfly larvae are aquatic, and they live inside a protective case that they’ve made themselves. They will gather anything lying around and combine it with their own silk to create this casing. It’s mostly debris, twigs and leaves, but many have been spotted with beautiful stones, colourful bugs and berries. In the 80s, Hubert Duprat – a French artist – made opals, pearls and gold flakes available to the larvae, and his efforts were rewarded as the larvae created beautiful, expensive works of art.

    6 - Mud Dauber
This elegant nest belongs to a wasp called a mud dauber. There are several types of mud daubers, including organ-pipe mud daubers, black-and-yellow mud daubers and blue mud daubers. They create their nests using mud and on occasion, their own vomit. The nests are shaped like cylindrical tubes and are built against bridges, walls, cliffs or similar structures. Inside are many cells that house the eggs and are also traps to keep prey, like spiders, so the wasps and their larvae can eat when they’re ready.

    5 - The Baya Weaver
These delicate creations belong to the baya weaver birds, native to the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They build their nests in Acacia trees or thorny palms, close to food, water and leaves. They’re usually found in colonies, but you do sometimes spot a lone nest.

    4 - Prairie Dogs
These are really rodents and they’re incredible diggers. They excavate their homes by digging burrows underground. They’re usually found in North America, and weather can vary greatly for these guys. Their homes need to withstand anything from extreme temperature differences, floods and fires. The different chambers of the burrows all serve different functions, for example, the nursery for the young will be deep within the soil so they are protected from predators. Some chambers are meant purely for storing food, others for listening out for predators and more for hiding from potential threats. You’ll find between 5 and 35 dogs per acre. The biggest home of prairie dogs was discovered in 1900, where it covered 25,000-square miles or 65,000 square kilometres, with around 400 million prairie dogs living inside!

    3 - Leaf Curling spider
Native to Australia, the leaf-curling ant makes an excellent home, secure from any outside interference. The spiders find the perfect dead leaf and line it with silk. They curl the leaf up, sealing it at the top and the bottom. They hide inside the leaf in the centre waiting for a nibble to pass by. These spiders are strong and can lift leaves that are 4 times their weight. Females also use these curled leaves as their nursery, and she then keeps the leaf hidden in nearby foliage. They’ve also been known to use other pliable materials like paper, to create their shelters.

    2 - Hamerkop Scopus umbrette
It’s a mouthful, I know, so you can just call them Hamerkops. These African birds build some impressive nests! They can take months to create, and they build between 3 and 5 a year! Regardless of whether the bird is breeding or not, they continue to build these nests. They can measure up to 2-meters in width or 6.5-feet and weigh as much as 50 kg or 110-pounds. They take about 8 weeks to build and use up to 10,000 twigs per nest! Both the male and female are equally involved in the building of these massive structures.

  • 15 Most Venomous Animals in the World

    22:04

Do you know the difference between a poisonous animal and a venomous one? A poisonous animal is one that is toxic, just by touching it. A venomous animal directly injects you with a toxin through bites and stings. For this list, we are going to be looking at the 15 most venomous animals in the world. Most of you are probably thinking of snakes and spiders. We have two of each, but the majority are ones that took researchers by surprise.. Let’s take a look at what they are, where they live, and how they inject their poison.  Here are 15 most venomous animals in the world

Number 15 The Southern Short Tailed Shrew

The southern short-tailed shrew is the smallest at 2 ½ to almost 4 inches long, and weighing about half an ounce. They have short legs, a thick neck, and carry its weight in its body. The shrew has a long snout and tiny ears that are hidden within its thick slate-grey fur. Their tails are between a half and ¾ of an inch. Their five-toed, sharp-clawed feet were designed for digging. The shrew makes the Southeastern United States, their home. They live mostly in pine forests, but they can also be found in swampy areas and unused farmland. The female shrews have three litters a year with two to six pups each time. They live their lives in a tunnel, starting just underneath a rotten log the resting nest is built around the tunnel opening, The tunnel leads to the larger nest. They eat insects, fungi, slugs and snails, centipedes, and spiders. They can and will poison anyone that comes near their young. One bite of their hollow and razor-sharp teeth injects enough venom to kill 200 lab rats. The toxin isn’t enough to kill a person, but...the unfortunate individual who gets bit will be subjected to muscle problems, swelling, and excruciating pain that lasts for days. So as cute as they are, for your safety, don’t try to tame a shrew.

    Let’s move on.

    Number 14 Gila Monster

The Gila monster is a lizard native to the southwestern part of the United States and northwestern Mexico. They move slowly due to the heaviness of their bodies, which are about 2 feet long. Native to North America, the Gila monster while venomous poses little threat to people. The Gila monster mates in May and June and lay around five eggs that will hatch a year later. Gilas can be found in the Southwestern areas of the United States and Mexico. They seek shelter in burrows, thickets, and under rocks. They like water and will play in puddles. Gila monsters spend most of their lives underground in burrows. In the spring and early summer when it’s dry they are active in the morning. During the summer when thunderstorms are common, they become more active at night. Gila monsters will eat small mammals, like the shrew, small birds, frogs, other lizards, and bugs Their favorites are lizards and bird eggs. These lizards only eat five to ten times a year. They can dig up, climb trees, and cacti in search of eggs. Coyotes, raptors, and people are their biggest danger.  Gila’s bites are horrible, they have scalpel-sharp teeth with grooves that move their toxic venom into the wound. A Gila bite can cause severe pain, dropping blood pressure, and hemorrhaging. A person can take up to five days to recover.

    Number 13 Duck-billed Platypus

At unlucky 13, we find the duck-billed platypus. Yes, really.  The Duck-Billed Platypus. The platypus often referred to as the duck-billed platypus, is a semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal that lives in eastern Australia. Platypus is one of five species of monotremes, this means that they are mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth. They find their prey by electrolocation. It’s one of the few venomous mammals, but the male has a spur on his hind foot that pumps venom into its enemy.  Their duck-billed, beaver tailed, and otter footed appearance confused the European naturalists when they first encountered it. They thought it was fabricated, a Frankenanimal if you will.  The duck-billed platypus has a broad flat tail that is covered in dense brown fur that traps around an insulating layer of air to keep them warm. Their fur is waterproof, and the tail is used to store fat. Their feet are webbed like a duck but the webbing will fold back when they are walking on dry land. Their long snout and lower jaw are covered with soft skin that forms its bill.

  • 15 Amazing Cases of Mutual Assistance Between Animals

    18:48

It would be easy to imagine that life is an animal is an endless battle where are the only rule is either eat or be eaten. And it would be easy to imagine this because it's pretty much the truth-wild animals spend a huge amount of their lives trying not to be killed by other wild animals and at the same time fighting and eating yet more wild animals. However, while this may be somewhat depressing, it's not the whole story. Animals are sometimes capable of remarkable acts of compassion and can even develop what are known as symbiotic relationships, where two species cooperate for mutual benefit. From the baby deer who was, ahem, ‘saved’ by a lion to the classic story of a leopard and a baboon, here are 15 Amazing Cases of Mutual Assistance Between Animals!

15 Most Incredible Animal Nests In The Animal-World!
    ► SUBSCRIBE TO THE BRILLIANT!:

Mother nature can be really surprising sometimes! When do you imagine a nest do you automatically think of a tiny bird in a tree? Well, get ready to discover a whole new world! Here are the Top 10 Most Amazing Nests In TheAnimal World!

We have a selection of different animals around the world with surprising and sometimes shocking techniques for nest building. Some of them even rival human engineering techniques! But before we begin with our list don’t forget to give this video a like, subscribe to the channel, and ring the bell for more cool countdowns, just like this one.

    Number 10 - Pufferfish

Of all the places in the world were to build a nest, the last one you would think about is underwater! The male pufferfish has a very particular technique to grab female attention that doesn’t involve an expensive dinner or a ring. This unique courtship ritual is eye-popping :

The nest he builds is an underwater artistic masterpiece. His only tool? His fins! In 1990, a team of deepsea divers discovered these mysterious underwater patterns in the sand. For years the so-called “Mystery Circles” was a real thing. It took nearly 20 years to realize that these large elaborate designs were created by a fish... and not under-water aliens! To finish this nest that can be 20 times his size, this relatively small pufferfish from japan works non-stop for more than a week so the current won’t destroy his creation. And for the romantic touch, he uses shells to decorate his inviting love nest. Now his 7-foot creation is ready and only waiting for the company.

    09 - Gia Woodpecker

We're jumping from the bottom of the sea to one of the driest places on earth - next up: theNorth American desert - where we'll find the Gia Woodpecker. When you live in the desert you don't get to be picky when it comes to choosing where to build a nest, that’s why these birds build their “home sweet home” inside of the tall columns of the Saguaro cacti. Building a house in such a prickly place is just as tricky as it sounds! It takes a pair of Gia woodpeckers months of planning and preparation to finish their nest. Unlike most woodpeckers, who peck holes to collect and store food for winter, Gia woodpeckers use their cactus nest for breeding and raising their young. These birds are genius planners and team players. They start by carefully digging out a hole months prior to their breeding time. This hole, called a boot, will dry-out and provide a cool and safe place for the woodpecker to raise his young

Number 08 - eider duck OV

From a dangerous highrise in the scorching desert to a luxurious dwelling in frigid Alaska, this next amazing nest is as fancy as it is comfortable. Eider ducks use a surprising material to build their nest: their own feathers! The eider duck is the largest duck species in North America, and even though their large bodies can be a little awkward in flight, their mass is helpful back on the ground both to protect and create their nests. The female eider duck plucks hundreds of small down feathers from her own breast to build her nest. She spends 99% of her time on the nest facing the cold and wind to keep her eggs warm. This incubating time can last more than 25days, a period where the female duck stays in the nest doesn't eat, and leaves to drink only every 2 to 5 days. During her brief departures, she covers her eggs with a fluffy layer of feathers to protect them from the freezing Alaska temperatures. I know this one is heart-warming

    Hamerkop

A squat, brown, ibis-like bird with a bushy-crested “hammer-head”; often found near wetlands or rivers. In flight, it has distinctively deep wingbeats and may occasionally soar very high, when the long neck separates it from raptors. It struts about in wetlands foraging for frogs, fish, and insects. No one really knows, but the nests are big with only one breeding pair doing the building. It has been said that the size of the nest may be used as an advertising beacon, letting other Hamerkops know that the area is occupied this even though Hamerkops do not hold territories and will therefore not defend a specific area. The large nests are also a great defense against torrential rain as well as wind and provide a place of refuge for both parents and offspring. The pair is very energetic in their building, starting with a bowl shape, adding the sides and roof, and then plastering the entrance tunnel and breeding chamber with mud brought in by the male but applied by the female.

The mud also helps improve the structural strength of the nest and blocks any holes in the nest thereby creating an insulated chamber. Nests can be built in as little as a month or can take up to six months depending on the availability of materials that are suitable for construction. Mostly sticks, along with grasses and reeds are mainly used. Nests can physically weigh up to 50kg and consist of thousands of pieces of material. They are usually built between the main forks of larger trees along watercourses or dams. Other bird species provide the biggest problems for Hamerkops, with a large number of species eager to set up residence within the Hamerkops mansion. Owls, geese and small hole nesting raptors, such as kestrels, are all unwelcome residents of the nests. Other visitor species may have no use for the chambers but will utilize the top of the nest as a base to construct their own nests. Hamerkops may build a new nest every year or use the same one repeatedly. This depends on many variables leading to favorable conditions for bring including food sources, disturbance by predators as well as interference by man.

    Ruby-Throated Hummingbird Nest

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a small hummingbird with a slender, slightly down curved bill and fairly short wings that don’t reach all the way to the tail when the bird is sitting. Like a crown jewel, the nest of a hummingbird is one of the great wonders in all of nature. They are so tiny, so perfect. Yet, few of us have ever seen a hummingbird nest. This is because they are nearly impossible to find. From the ground, they look like another bump on a branch. From above, an umbrella of leaves conceals them. From the side, they look like a tiny knot, quilted with lichens, plant down and fibers.

Though each of the 17 hummingbird species that breed in North America builds slightly different nests in various habitats, all hummingbird nests have much in common. Females build their nests 10 to 90 feet high, generally in trees or shrubs. Hummingbirds build velvety, compact cups with spongy floors and elastic sides that stretch as the young grow. They weave together twigs, plant fibers, and bits of leaves, and use spider silk as threads to bind their nests together and anchor them to the foundation. Hummingbird eggs are about the size of navy beans. Most females lay two eggs, which they incubate for 15 to 18 days. Juvenile hummingbirds leave the nest 18 to 28 days after hatching. Hummingbird eggs are cradled in soft fluffy fibers that hummingbirds choose from plants nearby.
