    11. Devil’s Kettle
On the easternmost tip of Minnesota, not far from Lake Superior and the US-Canadian Border, the Brule River drops 800 feet in an 8-mile span. At one point, the river splits into two. One side flows down into a normal, respectable waterfall. The other disappears into a hole in the ground and no one knows what happens after that. People call this area Devil’s Kettle Falls.

    10. PERMAFROST EXPLOSIONS
In both the Arctic and Antarctic circles, there are different kinds of ice layers. There’s the standard ice that we’re all familiar with, but underneath that, is a layer of soil that stays frozen year-round called permafrost, and it’s very difficult to work around. For example, when gold miners in the Yukon or Alaska hit a layer of permafrost, thawing it out is an expensive, time-consuming, and specialized process. But we gotta get to that gold!!

    9. DARVAZA GAS CRATER
Nicknamed the “Door to Hell,” the Darvaza gas crater was formed in 1971 in what is now Turkmenistan. At the time, the area was under Soviet leadership, who scanned the land for resources. A pocket of methane gas was discovered, so the government set up a drilling station to harvest it.

    8. LENTICULAR CLOUDS
Clouds are very diverse, and lenticular clouds are one of the most peculiar types of cloud. Lenticular clouds are stationary, lens-shaped clouds that form among the high altitudes of the troposphere. Their shape and size often dwarves those of other clouds, giving them a perfectly-sculpted, deliberate look.

    7. BIOLUMINESCENCE
Put simply, bioluminescence is the ability of a living organism to produce and emit light and for a long time scientists were confused as to why this phenomenon existed. At first, this trait was only thought to be possessed by fish who live in deep, dark parts of the ocean.

    6. CHRISTMAS ISLAND RED CRABS
Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean, and features one of the world’s most unique annual crab migrations. The island’s red crab population usually lives in the forest, but every year at the beginning of the wet season, which is usually during October or November, they travel en masse to the beach, where they mate and lay eggs. Males arrive first and dig burrows.

    5. Light Pillars
Light pillars are an optical phenomenon caused when flat, hexagonal ice crystals refract lights. These lights tend to take on the color of the light source and are usually produced by streetlights. However, any light source, under the right conditions, can create a light pillar.

    4. THE SPOTTED LAKE
Canada is home to a fascinating lake that looks like any other body of water for most of the year, but during the summer, everything changes. The appropriately-named Spotted Lake, which is also nicknamed “Canada’s most magical lake,” is located northwest of Osoyoos in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

    3. FROST FLOWERS
Ice is typically a mere cold substance that can be annoying if you slip on it, save for its occasional useful purposes for things like ice cubes and skating rinks. Especially creative people may see more potential in ice than the average person and create beautiful sculptures and even buildings out of large blocks of it.

    2. AURORA BOREALIS
The Northern Lights are one of the most well-known phenomena on Earth - it’s on many people’s list of places to go before you die because of its sheer beauty and mystery. This extraordinary light show occurs when the sun releases electrically charged particles, which collide with gases like oxygen and nitrogen when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere.

    1. Volcanic Lightning
Active volcanoes are one of the most dangerous natural phenomena on Earth. Throughout the world, there are islands, cities, and regions that are constantly on edge because of a nearby active volcano.

  • 23 Scary Natural Phenomena Happening Somewhere Right Now

    10:10

Fire tornadoes, tiny algae that destroy sea mammals, birds, and turtles as well as creatures that feed on them, and bubbles that underwater volcanoes produce even while they’re sleeping are some of the scariest natural phenomena are happening somewhere right now. It seems that modern science has an explanation for everything that happens around us. But as it turns out, nature has a lot of other tricks up its sleeve.

For example, when frozen methane in the Siberian permafrost melts, it transforms into gas and boom – there’s eventually so much of it the ground explodes! It leaves behind huge craters, changing the eco-system of tundra. And no one knows when it’s going to pass the “point of no return.” So, let's take a look at the most amazing and scary natural phenomena and anomalies. Some of then still can’t be explained by scientists.

  • Why This Tiny Lake Is the Scariest on Earth

    8:53

There are about 117 million lakes on our planet, and they cover almost 4% of the continental land. Lakes can be small or big, clean or dirty, vital for local infrastructure or...deadly. And if you've been wondering which lake is the most dangerous in the world and why, this video will answer your questions.

    TIMESTAMPS:
Where the most dangerous lake in the world is situated 1:11
What makes Lake Kivu so dangerous 2:05
What happened at Lake Monoun in 1984 2:27
What happened at Lake Nyos in 1986 3:06
    What characterizes crater lakes 4:11
    What was the solution 6:21
How much contains methane gas Lake Kivu contains 7:06
How many people could die if Lake Kivu explodes 7:52

    Music:

    SUMMARY:
    - The most dangerous lake in the world is situated in Africa on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. It’s Lake Kivu, the ninth deepest lake in the world.
    - On August 15, 1984, a loud boom sounded from the lake, according to locals. People saw a huge gas cloud over the surface of the water. This natural disaster took the lives of 37 people.
    - The theory was proved false 2 years later on August 21, 1986, when a much more disastrous explosion shook Lake Nyos, which is located just 62 miles away from Lake Monoun. This time, the catastrophe happened at night and took the lives of more than 1,700 people.
    - Crater lakes usually have extremely high levels of CO2 due to the volcanic activity that’s happening many miles beneath the surface. Under normal circumstances, this gas is occasionally released during the lake water turnover.
    - Nowadays, measures have been taken to prevent similar catastrophes from happening. The solution was quite simple: degassing. Authorities installed a pipe that runs to the very bottom of Lake Nyos.
    - Lake Kivu contains more than 55 billion cubic meters of methane gas, which is generated at the bottom of the lake. On top of that, it's also located in a crater, and its volcanic rock bed has layers of carbon dioxide.
    - Either the methane explosion or CO2 poisoning could take the lives of more than 2 million people living in the basin of Lake Kivu.

July, 1957. An ordinary day in the state of Kerala, India. People walk down the streets doing their business and it begins to rain. Suddenly, people start to shout and run away in fear. Everything turns into a kind of horror movie. Because the rain drops that fall from the sky are bright red. And this is not a horror movie. It's all happening for real.

Imagine the familiar view outside your window. What if you saw it gradually turn red? The clothes of people caught in the rain would change to pink. So what caused the red rain? There's a logical explanation for it. And for white rain, too. As well as for black rain. Wait, really? What other rain colors are there? Well, a green rain fell near Calcutta in the summer of 2002, and one day a brown rain fell in southern Russia. Let's find out more about these amazing natural phenomena.

  • 7 Ways to Survive Natural Disasters

    9:34

How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency.
We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen.

Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster.
“Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries.

    TIMESTAMPS
    Hurricane 0:40
    Tornado 1:45
    Tsunami 3:15
    Flood 4:10
    Avalanche 5:03
    Wildfire 6:00
    Earthquake 7:00

    SUMMARY
    - If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area – do it.
    - If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado.
    - Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven.
    - Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it.
    - When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow.
    - If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety.
    - If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places.

  • 11 Most Dangerous Natural Phenomena

    14:34

From fire tornadoes, to hordes of deadly locusts, here are 11 of the most dangerous natural phenomena!

    Subscribe to Epic Wildlife

    11: Volcanic Lightning
Imagine two of the deadliest natural phenomena working together. As if being scorched alive by lava while being suffocated by volcanic ash was not bad enough already, you can also get struck by lightning at the same time. This is a phenomenon known as volcanic lightning, which can happen when a volcano erupts.

    10: Fire Tornados
While we're mixing up natural disasters, how about a firestorm and a tornado twisted into one deadly cyclone of hellfire? These are one of nature's most impressive phenomena. Witnessing a full-sized fire tornado is like witnessing an angry genie raging out of control, burning everything in sight and leaving absolute devastation in its wake.

    9: Ice Spikes
Ice spikes are not the most dangerous natural phenomenon to ever occur on our planet, but I certainly would not want to fall on a bed of jagged ice daggers. This natural occurrence happens generally in high-altitude areas where the environment is dry and cold, most famously in the Atacama Desert of Chile. And while I call them ice spikes, the scientific name for these dangerous formations is “penitentes.”

    8: Locusts
When people think about natural phenomena, they are always thinking about volcanoes and hurricanes, landslides and avalanches – but what about the insect scourge that has been killing people for centuries, you know, the thing you never hear about on the news? Mosquitoes have killed more people than anything else ever in the history of the world, roughly 50 billion lives since humankind started wandering around.

    7. Lenticular Clouds
Lenticular clouds get their name from their lens or saucer-like shape, which also explains their nickname “flying saucer clouds”. In fact, they are sometimes mistaken for UFOs. Other nicknames for lenticular clouds include “cloud ships”, “clouds of heaven”, and “lennies”.

    6: Methane in the Ice
It is no secret by now that methane is incredibly dangerous. Methane gas comes from underground and releases greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. Not only is this incredibly dangerous to our environment since it’s a potent greenhouse gas, but one of the biggest extinction events in the history of the planet was caused by massive amounts of methane leaking into the atmosphere.

    5: Warm Water Blob
The warm water blob or “the blob” for short is partly a natural phenomenon and partly human influenced. Think of the ocean as a well-controlled environment where temperatures remain the same and all life thrives in a closed circuit. Essentially, the circle of life. Now what happens when a giant blob of overheated water invades the controlled environment?

    4: Sinkholes
Sinkholes are a terrifying phenomenon. Picture this: you're at home watching TV, enjoying a nice beverage, feet up on the couch and not a worry in the world, and then a giant crater opens underneath your house and swallows you into the dark abyss of the underground. Sure, that seems a little dramatic, but that is exactly what a sinkhole is.

    3: Wind & Water, Hurricanes & Tsunamis
Cyclones, typhoons, hurricanes, and tsunamis are some of the most intense natural phenomena that occur on our planet, and they do so on a regular basis. It is hard to find one place in the world that is not currently under threat by extreme winds and water. Every coastal city on Earth is in danger of being destroyed by the power of the wind and sea.

    2: Volcanos
This should come as no surprise to anyone. Volcanoes are nature's most prevalent danger. Why? Because we see them all the time, towering over our cities and looming ominously on the horizon like the infernal Mount Doom. Volcanos have proved time and time again that they are not to be taken lightly, seemingly spitting up molten hot lava whenever they feel inclined.

    1: Ice Age
One of the greatest natural phenomena is the Ice Age. I'm not saying we're about to enter an ice age, but it is a natural part of the Earth’s cycle. The last one was about 12,000 years ago, when massive sheets of ice covered all of Canada, Northern United States, Northern Europe and Northern Asia.

  • 7 Natural Disasters That Might Happen in the Next Years

    8:17

It happened 74,000 years ago, and it was one of the Earth’s largest explosive eruptions. It caused a global winter that lasted for years. Volcanic gases were ejected into both hemispheres and moved all around the planet. The eruption created the famous Lake Toba, which covers an area of 436 square miles. The Toba volcano is still active, and if a similar eruption happens again, it will directly affect both Indonesia and Malaysia. But Toba could also pump out enough gas to affect the whole world’s climate.

There is no bigger force than nature. Every year natural disasters occur all over our planet. Despite the fact that we can fly into space, we still can't withstand the forces of nature. Let's find out which natural disasters are possible in the future. From bad solar storms to global earthquakes and meteor strikes, these catastrophic events might threaten the world in the near future and affect millions of people.

  • Most Deadly Natural Disasters of All Time

    9:00

Mother Nature can be merciless. From the roiling hurricanes of the Gulf Coast to the trailer-tossing storms of Tornado Alley, to the ground-pounding quakes of California, violent natural disasters have riddled the world since the beginning of the time, but the death counts of the most ancient of these disasters are lost to history. The Mediterranean island of Stroggli, for example is believed to have been completely wiped out by a volcanic eruption and ensuing tsunami that wiped out the entire Minoan civilization around 1500 B.C. How many lives were lost? We'll never know. For other disasters, historians can at least make estimates. The following 8 disasters are the deadliest for which reasonably accurate death tolls exist. Here are eight of the worst natural disasters of all time.

  • 10 Scientifically Impossible Places That Actually Exist

    11:00

The Seven Wonders of the Natural World may have been named too quickly. Wonders like The Grand Canyon and Victoria Falls are certainly big, and anyone who sees them will surely be impressed—but sheer size isn’t enough to truly leave a person in awe.
There are other places in this world, though, that are far stranger. Places that seem almost alien, as if they could only exist on a planet that evolved separately from our own. These are places that scientists have had to struggle just to understand how they ever could have been formed. Places that will truly make you wonder—not just because they’re beautiful, but because they seem to follow scientific laws that don’t exist anywhere else on earth. Here are 10 Scientifically Impossible Places That Actually Exist
