  • 15 Oldest Technologies Scientists Still Can’t Explain

    21:57

We often arrogantly think of modern society as the peak of humanity thus far, incorrectly seeing ‘technology’ as a modern craft. But, in truth, some societies of the past were far more creative than we give them credit for and not only did they craft technology we still use today but, in some cases, they designed things that, all these years later, we ‘modern buffoons’ can’t wrap our heads around how they work! They may not haveinvented iPhones, but some of their technology is still bafflingly brilliant. These are the oldest technologies scientists STILL can’t explain!

Science does not have an answer for everything. That's the case for things which are happening in the world right now, and it's also the case for things that happened in the world thousands of years ago. They don't like to talk about it, but there are many ancient sites and structures all over the planet that were built with human hands, but scientists just can't tell us how such remarkable building work was accomplished using the tools available at the time. Let's take a look at some of the most outstanding examples!

Human beings are capable of building incredible structures, from the latest cutting-edge office blocks to artistic sculptures. Cathedrals, sporting arenas, and monuments all over the world are a testament to our creative skill as a species. In the modern era though, we have technology to help us, from huge mechanical drills to laser cutting curved glass. Builders didn’t have these luxuries in ancient times, so how did they manage to create some of the ancient wonders we’re about to show you in this video? Science still doesn’t have the answers.

Welcome back, Richest fans! Every day, we use a variety of technology to complete all sorts of tasks. Such as cars, ovens, computers, and much more. Every so often, scientists will uncover lost antique treasure. It can give us a valuable insight into civilisation during those ancient days. However, sometimes, the scientists have no idea what the item was used for. In other instances, the creation of the items may be far beyond the technological capabilities available at that time. That’s exactly what we’re going to look at in today's video! Some of the oldest, unknown technologies that scientists are stumped on. We’re also going to see how much money they’re worth or speculate on their value.
One of the discoveries is the mysterious Roman Dodecahedron. Another involves the Antikythera Mechanism and what its purpose might be. We also have the Dashka Stone that may be the oldest map in existence. We also have the fabled Greek Fire. It relates to Elon Musk’s version of a flamethrower! We also have the colour changing Lycurgus Cup. The Nimrud Lens has a variety of potential purposes. Perhaps we can figure out what it is! We have the Voynich Manuscript written in an unknown language. There’s also the Ulfberht, a type of Viking sword. We also have the Codex Gigas. Also known as, “The Devil’s Bible”. Find out why in the video! Finally, we have the legend of the Stradivarius Violins. Many are worth an absolute fortune! So, watch the video to find out what all these mysterious artefacts are!

  • Is the house of history built on foundations of sand? | Graham Hancock | TEDxReading

    18:05

NOTE from TED: Please be aware that this talk contains outdated and counterfactual assertions, and should not be understood as a representation of modern scholarship on ancient civilizations.

If ancient civilizations interest you, TEDx Talks contain many fascinating and well-researched talks such as:

Sarah Parcak's talk on space arachaeology at TEDxYale:

Leslie van Gelder's talk on cave art at TEDxQueenstown:

Sarah Kenderdine's talk on museums of the future at TEDxGateway:

Since 2007, compelling evidence has been published in leading scientific journals confirming that fragments of a disintegrating giant comet struck the earth around 12,800 years ago. The impacts set in motion a mysterious 1,200-year global deep freeze that caused worldwide extinctions of species. Established theories about the emergence of civilization cite the invention of agriculture and monumental architecture some 11,600 years ago—immediately after the freeze. In this controversial presentation, best-selling author Graham Hancock argues that archaeologists, by not accounting for the cataclysm, have gravely misinterpreted history. What the record attests to is not the sudden invention of technology, but a transfer of technology to hunter-gatherers from a more advanced civilization.

British writer and journalist, Hancock specialises in unconventional theories involving ancient civilisations, stone monuments or megaliths, altered states of consciousness, ancient myths and astronomical/astrological data from the past. One of the main themes running through many of his books is a posited global connection with a mother culture from which he believes all ancient historical civilisations sprang.
Graham sees himself as a journalist who asks questions based upon observation and as someone who provides a counterbalance to what he perceives as the unquestioned acceptance and support given to orthodox views by the education system, the media, and by society at large.
His books have sold more than five million copies worldwide and have been translated to 27 languages.

  • 7 Real Flying Cars That Actually Fly

    10:01

7 Real Flying Cars That Actually Fly
    ----------------------

    AeroMobil
The AeroMobil is a fascinating vehicle for several reasons; first off, it’s a real flying car. Yes, that can actually fly in real life. You can make use of the AeroMobil for its aerial capabilities or its more mundane road-traveling capabilities. AeroMobil is faster than most traditional flights, and is less stressful and time-consuming than traveling through a traditional airline or ordering for a helicopter.

    PAL-V Liberty
The Personal Air and Land Vehicle is an aircraft manufacturer based in Netherlands. The company has been in business for more than 20 years with the dream of building an actual flying car from the get-go. After years of research and development, it launched its first flying car known as PAL-V Liberty.

    Klein Vision AirCar
In late October 2020, Klein Vision has released a video of its AirCar taking a maiden flight. Similar to Aeromobil, the vehicle is a four-wheel car with only two seats and it does actually fly like an aircraft. There is no instant vertical lift; AirCar needs a runway for takeoff and landing.

    Airbus Pop.Up
Pop.Up as a concept was presented at the 2017 Geneva auto show. It was part helicopter and part car, and Airbus claims that although further development will rely on technologies that at this point are not mature enough, the basic idea actually is feasible. Technically speaking, the Pop.Up is already very close to a form of new transportation which can be produced right now.

    Terrafugia Transition
On display at the New York International Auto Show in April 2012, the Terrafugia Transition brought a tangible evidence to the world that the concept of flying car was not at all imaginary. Now that it is a fully-working model instead of just a prototype, you can actually buy it for an estimated price of $400,000.

    Maverick Flying Car
Developed by Indigenous Peoples Technology and Education Center, the Maverick Flying Car is never intended as a vehicle for the general population, but a vehicle to help reach those in remote locations where transportation is a real challenge. Maverick is an FAA-certified flying car, so it is actually road legal. The vehicle is powered by a fuel-injected 2.5-liter Subaru engine that generates 190 horsepower.

    Terrafugia TF-X
Known as TF-X, Terrafugia has fitted it with hybrid powertrain to propel the wheels on the ground and two electric rotors for flying. The vehicle does its takeoff vertically instead of requiring high speed run before airborne. The pair of electric motors put in combination with a petrol engine that generates 300 horsepower should theoretically deliver ridiculous amount of megawatt.

  • Secrets of the Stone Age | DW Documentary

    42:31

During the Stone Age, humans shifted from the nomadic lifestyle to the more settled life of farmers. A documentary on an important period of human history. Watch Part 2 here:

Around 12,000 years ago, humans underwent a transition from nomads to settlers. That epoch, the Stone Age, produced monumental building works. Part 1 of this two-part documentary illuminates the cultural background of these structures and shows the difficulties Stone Age humans had to contend with. Until around 10,000 BC, humans lived as hunters and gatherers. Then an irreversible change began. Settlements formed. For millions of years humans lived as foragers and suddenly their lives changed radically. This was far more radical than the start of the digital age or industrialization, says prehistorian Hermann Parzinger, president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. For a long time, scholars believed that a sedentary lifestyle was a prerequisite for constructing large buildings. Then archaeologist Klaus Schmidt discovered Göbekli Tepe in southern Turkey, a 12,000-year-old complex of stone blocks weighing up to 20 tons. Its builders were still hunter- gatherers. They decorated the stone columns with ornate animal reliefs. How these structures were used and who was allowed access to them remains a mystery. But we now know that the site was abandoned and covered over once settlements took root. Human development continued its course. The discovery of agriculture and animal husbandry led to larger settlements, a changed diet and ultimately to dependence on material goods. This social upheaval in the late Neolithic period has influenced our lives up to the present day. But experts agree that the monuments of the Stone Age prove that humans have gigantomanic tendencies and a need to immortalize themselves.

    SUMMARY
-Granodiorite rocks can easily be carved using temperature techniques. Hundreds of stone spheres were found quarried in the foothills of the Talamanca Mountains. Researchers even saw a gigantic ball weighing over 16 tons.
-The Roman dodecahedron had 12 flat pentagon-shaped faces with a knob protruding on each corner. It might have been a dice, a kid’s toy, a candle holder, a simple decoration, a measuring device on the battlefield, or an astronomical instrument, to name a few.
-The Phaistos Disk was made from clay and measures about 6.2 inches in diameter. Experts concluded that it was a prayer to an ancient Minoan goddess.
-The formula of Greek fire was a well-guarded state secret for over 7 centuries. Greek fire was used in naval warfare.
-Blades made from Damascus steel were the most sought after in medieval Europe. And that’s because they were the best swords at the time.
-The Iron pillar of Delhi dates back to the Gupta period, which lasted from about 240 to 590 C.E. A small amount of rust has started to form, but it is strange that there isn’t more.
-Viking Ulfberht swords are believed to have been made around 800 to 1,000 C.E., but experts were sure that the technology used to make swords of such extraordinary quality didn’t come around until 800 years later.
-The Voynich manuscript has 240 pages broken up into four sections: herbal, astrological, balneological, and pharmacological. There have literally been dozens of failed attempts to crack this thing.
-In 132 C.E., Zhang Heng, a Chinese inventor, astronomer, engineer, scientist, scholar, and artist, invented a seismoscope and presented it to the Han court as an instrument for measuring seasonal winds and the Earth’s movements.
-The Antikythera mechanism was retrieved by a group of divers in 1900 and has been dubbed “the world’s first analog computer” and it was made around 200 B.C.E.

10 Oldest Technologies Scientists Still Can’t Explain!

    Subscribe For New Videos!

    9. Early Earthquake Detection Device
In modern times, there are various instruments to help predict and measure the intensity of earthquakes, but these devices were hardly original, as one similar device was somehow made in 132 AD by Chinese Astronomer Zhang Heng.

    8. Asuka Stones
All over the world, we have various structures that have proven mysterious not just because of their simply being there, but the work that was put into their carvings. A great example of this can be found in Asuka, Japan. In this place, there are many stone structures that defy belief because it's clear that they have been placed upon one another in certain spots, and carved in others. Yet as to what the purpose of the carvings are...no one really knows.

    7. Jain Temples
Located in Hassan of Karnataka in the nation of India, the town of Shravanabelagola is a pilgrimage point for many, mainly because of the exotic Jain Temples that reside there. The mystery of this location lies not just in the temples, but the way the temples were constructed.

    6. Ural Mountains Coils
In Russia, near the Ural Mountains, there have been discoveries of small objects that truly boggle the mind. Mainly, in 1991, items were found in the banks of rivers as people were searching for gold. What items were found? Coils, shafts, and other objects. While this wouldn't be odd per se, when they observed the items, they realized that they were old, VERY old.

    5. The Baalbek Monolith
In Baalbek Lebanon stands one of the most curious pieces of history in terms of a massive granite monolith. It stands many thousands of years old, and is one of a few blocks that are a part of the Temple of Jupiter that is nearby. Because of this, many people think that it was crafted by the Romans many ages ago, however, certain researchers and scientists disagree with that.

    4. Baghdad Batteries
The modern battery is one of the most important technological breakthroughs of modern times, but in the ancient days, they may have had their own kind of battery. This is not speculation though, as a site in what was Mesopotamia (and now Iraq) found a special jar that was believed to be an ancient form of battery.

    3. Black Granite Sarcophagus
Finding a sarcophagus in Egypt is nothing new, however, in 2018, a very curious kind of sarcophagus was found in Alexandria. What set this one apart was that unlike most burial sarcophagus associated with Egypt, this one was pure black granite, and had no markings on it that would indicate who or what was inside.

    2. Stone Age Tools That Rewrite History
One of the biggest questions about humanity was when did they start to leave Africa to populate the rest of the world. At one point people believed that the answer was 60,000 years ago. But new findings put that all in doubt.

    1. Dragon and Griffin Megaliths
Due to the process of time and weather, it's impossible to know all the things that were made by the ancient people of the land, and one such case can be found in Russia where two giant megaliths were rediscovered after people noticed that they were clearly carved into. The megaliths themselves are of a dragon and a griffin, two ancient creatures in many mythologies. They look distorted now because of weather and time, but the shapes can still be partially seen.

Do you think that computers are a modern invention? What about sound chambers that can amplify what someone says by 100 times or more, or calendars that can be recalibrated from one year to the next? All of these inventions sound modern, but they are actually ancient. And they absolutely bewilder modern researchers

    Number 10: Zhang Heng Seismometer

In 132 AD, Chinese astronomer Zhang Heng created a seismometer, which detects the ground’s movement during an earthquake. It couldn’t predict quakes, but it did show what direction they were coming from — even when they were hundreds of miles away!

Zhang was also a mathematician and mechanical engineer who constructed many practical devices, including a cart for measuring the Chinese mile, an early armillary sphere, and a globe-shaped model of the heavens. His seismometer, the first known instrument built to detect earthquakes, was important because devastating quakes happened in many remote regions of China. So a detection device helped the emperor know when and where to send timely aid from the capital.

The bronze device featured eight metal dragons attached to what looked like a big coffee urn. Each dragon’s head pointed in a different direction (north, south, east, west, northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest), and each had a copper ball in its mouth. Below the dragons’ mouths were eight copper toads with their mouths upraised.

    Number 9: Antikythera mechanism

One hundred fifteen years ago, an archeologist was sifting through objects found in the wreck of a 2,000-year-old vessel off the Greek island Antikythera. Among the wreck's treasures — beautiful vases and pots, jewelry, a bronze statue of an ancient philosopher — was the most peculiar thing: a series of brass gears and dials mounted in a case the size of a mantel clock.

To archeologists, it was immediately apparent that the mechanism was some sort of clock, calendar, or calculating device. But they had no idea what it was for. For decades, they debated: Was the Antikythera, a toy model of the planets? Or perhaps it was an early astrolabe (a device to calculate latitude)?

    Number 8: Voynich Manuscript

The Voynich manuscript is an illustrated codex hand-written in an unknown, possibly meaningless writing system. The vellum on which it is written has been carbon-dated to the early 15th century (1404–1438), and it may have been composed in Italy during the Italian Renaissance. The manuscript is named after Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish book dealer who purchased it in 1912.

Some of the pages are missing, with around 240 remaining. The text is written from left to right, and most of the pages have illustrations or diagrams, and some pages foldable sheets.

The Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II. The manuscript has never been demonstrably deciphered, and the mystery of its meaning and origin has excited the popular imagination, making it the subject of novels and speculation.

None of the many hypotheses proposed over the last hundred years have been independently verified.

    Number 7: Ulfberht Swords
The Ulfberht sword deserves to be put alongside the names of the most famous, and in this case mysterious, swords ever found. An enigmatic blade made by the Vikings and engraved with the word Ulfberht has stumped archaeologists. The sword is forged in such a way that it looks to have been made by technologies that weren’t available until 800 years after the Viking era.
Around 170 of the swords have been found, all of which date from between 800AD to 1000AD, but the technology that would have forged them is from the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s and 1900s.
A television program has looked into the mystery in more detail called ‘Secrets of the Viking Sword.’ Its researchers say that to forge the iron that the swords are made of, the ore needs to be heated around 3000 degrees (F).

    Number 6: Damascus Steel

Damascus Steel is a famed type of steel recognizable by the watery or wavy light and dark pattern of the metal. Besides being beautiful, Damascus steel was valued because it maintained a keen edge and was hard and flexible.

Weapons made from Damascus steel were vastly superior to weapons formed from iron! Although modern high-carbon steels made using the 19th century Bessemer process surpass Damascus steel's quality, it remains an outstanding material, particularly for its day. There are two types of Damascus steel: cast Damascus steel and pattern-welded Damascus steel.  The techniques for making wootz were lost in the 1700s, so Damascus steel's source material was lost.

So as you may have noticed from last episode, computers keep getting faster and faster, and by the start of the 1950s they had gotten so fast that it often took longer to manually load programs via punch cards than to actually run them! The solution was the operating system (or OS), which is just a program with special privileges that allows it to run and manage other programs. So today, we’re going to trace the development of operating systems from the Multics and Atlas Supervisor to Unix and MS-DOS, and take at look at how these systems heavily influenced popular OSes like Linux, Windows, MacOS, and Android that we use today.
