  • Empowering Nurses to Protect Themselves and Their Patients: Nurses Role in Antibiotic Stewardship

The CDC estimates that at least 2 million people are infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria and at least 23,000 people die each year as a result of those infections. As the most trusted profession that spends that most time with patients, the nurses’ presence and leadership in developing antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs) is essential.
This webinar will use the ANA and CDC white paper as the framework to describe the problem of antibiotics resistance, embrace the nurses expanded role in hospital ASPs and describe key reasons for nurse leaders to be engaged with antimicrobial stewardship.

  • Piagets Theory of Cognitive Development

Piaget's theory argues that we have to conquer 4 stages of cognitive development:
    1. Sensori-Motor Stage
    2. Pre-Operational Stage
    3. Concrete Operational Stage
    4. Formal Operational Stage

Only once we have gone through all the stages, at what age can vary, we are able to reach full human intelligence.

This course picks up where Harvard University's CS50 leaves off, transitioning from web development to mobile app development with React Native, a popular open-source framework maintained by Facebook that enables cross-platform native apps using JavaScript without Java or Swift. The course introduces students to modern JavaScript (including ES6 and ES7) as well as to JSX, a JavaScript extension. Through hands-on projects, students gain experience with React and its paradigms, app architecture, and user interfaces. The course culminates in a final project for which students implement an app entirely of their own design.

This is CS50, Harvard University's introduction to the intellectual enterprises of computer science and the art of programming.

  • Regularization for Optimal Transport and Dynamic Time Warping Distances - Marco Cuturi

The workshop aims at bringing together researchers working on the theoretical foundations of learning, with an emphasis on methods at the intersection of statistics, probability and optimization.

Machine learning deals with mathematical objects that have structure. Two common structures arising in applications are point clouds / histograms, as well as time series. Early progress in optimization (linear and dynamic programming) have provided powerful families of distances between these structures, namely Wasserstein distances and dynamic time warping scores. Because they rely both on the minimization of a linear functional over a (discrete) space of alignments and a continuous set of couplings respectively, both result in non-differentiable quantities. We show how two distinct smoothing strategies result in quantities that are better behaved and more suitable for machine learning applications, with applications to the computation of Fréchet means.

  • André NEVES - Gromov’s Weyl Law and Denseness of minimal hypersurfaces

Minimal surfaces are ubiquitous in Geometry but they are quite hard to find.
For instance, Yau in 1982 conjectured that any 3-manifold admits infinitely many closed minimal surfaces but the best one knows is the existence of at least two.
In a different direction, Gromov conjectured a Weyl Law for the volume spectrum that was proven last year by Liokumovich, Marques, and myself.
I will cover a bit the history of the problem and then talk about recent work with Irie,
Marques, and myself: we combined Gromov’s Weyl Law with the Min-max theory Marques and I have been developing over the last years to prove that, for generic metrics, not only there are infinitely many minimal hypersurfaces but they are also dense.

    Vicarious Trauma and Professional Interpreters
    (Webinar Recording 6/14/18)

    Presenter: Ludmila Golovine

Language professionals working in healthcare, in court, in jail, with refugees, with child protective services, with victims of abuse, in war zones, or interpreting during an intense encounter most likely experienced high levels of stress, suffered vicarious trauma, or felt vulnerable during the course of their everyday work.

Vicarious trauma has been identified as something that affects the performance and wellbeing of interpreters by their experiencing or internalizing someone else’s trauma. Research has confirmed that interpreters are vulnerable to vicarious trauma, burnouts, compassion fatigue, or secondary stress as a result of repeatedly interpreting various traumatic information and experiences. Not only do interpreters witness the trauma, but channeling the trauma can also affect their perceptions of the world around them and result in anxiety, depression, and other serious mental health issues.

First formally brought into the light during the 2001 International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), interpretation was subsequently placed in the category of high-stress professions, with consequences ranging from burnout to vicarious trauma, leading to significant performance impediments. The study that triggered this awareness investigated four sets of parameters: psychological, physiological, physical, and performance, as well as the interactions between them.

Drawing from over 25 years of experience in a professional services industry, Ludmila “Mila” Golovine, Founder, President & CEO of MasterWord, a Language Services Provider agency, and an interpreter herself, will speak on the subject of vicarious traumatization not from a scientific but from an insider’s point of view - as a representative of a profession that is vulnerable to this type of trauma. Participants will be provided with real-life applications and tools that can help identify and examine triggers leading to vicarious trauma impacting the wellbeing and performance of service professionals, as well as learn practical steps to prevent and/or mitigate the effects of vicarious trauma before, during and after of the patient (client) – provider interactions.

  • Nursing School vs Real World Nursing

Nursing school vs the real world - What are the differences between nursing school and working as a nurse?

In this video, I outline six differences that you will notice when working as a nurse vs being a student in nursing school.

    Full article:

One of the differences you'll notice is the stress. Being both a nurse and nursing student can be stressful, but the stress is different. In nursing school, you mostly stress over studying, passing exams, and worrying if you'll complete assignments.

While working as a nurse, you'll be stressing over patients, knowing their life is in your hands. You'll stress about getting your tasks done on time, and more.

Another difference between nursing school and working as a nurse are the care plans. In nursing school care plans tend to be very tedious and take 4-6 hours to complete. They are very thorough because they are designed to teach you to think like a nurse.

In contrast, care plans on the nursing job are much easier to complete. They are in electronic format, and you typically click boxes on a computer. In addition, care plans change throughout the day, and you'll see the same types of patients within your specialty and will know what to expect.

Watch the video for more differences.

Mean field asymptotics in high-dimensional statistics: From exact results to efficient algorithms
    Andrea Montanari

Abstract: Modern data analysis challenges require building complex statistical models with massive numbers of parameters. It is nowadays commonplace to learn models with millions of parameters by using iterative optimization algorithms. What are typical properties of the estimated models? In some cases, the high-dimensional limit of a statistical estimator is analogous to the thermodynamic limit of a certain (disordered) statistical mechanics system. Building on mathematical ideas from the mean-field theory of disordered systems, exact asymptotics can be computed for high-dimensional statistical learning problems.
This theory suggests new practical algorithms and new procedures for statistical inference. Also, it leads to intriguing conjectures about the fundamental computational limits for statistical estimation.
