  • 26 HOUR CALL SHIFT with EMERGENCY CODE BLUE: Day in the Life of a Doctor

    13:36

Join me for a 26 hour call shift and find out what a day in the life of a doctor is really like!

This Saturday I'm on call with a wonderful team of residents and medical students, admitting patients from the emergency department to hospital and managing emergencies in the hospital.

Today there were TWO code blues over night. These are medical emergencies attended by doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and anesthesiology.

What happens in a code blue?

  • Surveillance cameras capture lifesaving team effort

    2:58

SALEM, Ore. — April 17, 2012 — John Juras, 61, of Salem, is a true fighter and survivor. If it wasn't for this team at Salem Hospital, I'd be dead, he said. His girlfriend drove him to Salem Hospital on April 4 after he felt chest pains. Juras' heart stopped beating outside the emergency department.

Hospital surveillance cameras caught what happened next as more than two-dozen people, including medical staff and hospital employees, swarmed outside to help Juras. A registered nurse performed CPR on Juras while he was still in the car. Once he was moved to a stretcher, another RN jumped on top and continued to perform CPR as he was wheeled into the emergency department.

The medical team spent 45 minutes trying to resuscitate Juras as his heartbeat faded in and out. The team used a defibrillator 10 times. Juras was transferred to the hospital's full-service catheterization lab, the only one in the region that offers more than diagnostic capabilities. Additional services include treatment and surgery. A cardiologist in the lab discovered Juras had a blocked artery to his heart, cleared the blockage and inserted a stent.

Juras then recovered over the course of 10 days in the care of medical staff and employees in the hospital's cardiovascular care unit, before being released to go home April 14. Absolutely a miracle what they did for me, said Juras. I owe them my life.

Salem Hospital is part of Salem Health, along with West Valley Hospital, Willamette Health Partners and other affiliated health care organizations offering exceptional care to people in and around Oregon's mid-Willamette Valley. This is A Day in the Life of a Doctor - ICU Edition! Dr. Amit Pandey is a third year internal medicine resident at UC San Diego. He graduated from UCLA for undergrad and went to UC San Diego for medical school. You can learn more about his story as well as read his insightful blog posts at

Dr. Pandey goes over what a day in the life is like in residency while on ICU - one of the toughest rotations in residency. He goes over the call rooms in the hospital and how they perform and practice central lines - a critical skill in the ICU.

ICU patients are some of the sickest, and things don't always end well. This can weigh heavily on family, but also the physician and care providers. Dr. Pandey elaborates on this in his excellent blog post titled Life and Death in the ICU: A reflection. You can read it here

  • DOCTOR VLOGGING IN HOSPITAL: 24 Hour Shift

    7:43

Join me for 24 hours in the hospital - see what it's really like to be a junior doctor!

Currently I'm on a hematology rotation (specialty of blood disorders). In the morning I see patients in a hematology clinic, then in the afternoon I see patients in the hospital. When 5pm rolls arounds, I take on a new role covering the ward overnight. That means I'm seeing patients in the emergency department as they come into hospital and managing any issues that come up on the ward (patients who are already admitted).

When discussing patient cases, this is only my perspective and is not meant to be reflective of how all physicians should treat patients. Note: the chest x-ray is a borrowed image and not from the patient I was treating.

    THANK YOU for watching!

    About me:
My name is Sarah, I'm a junior doctor in the NHS. I am a locum doctor in a busy Emergency Department in a trauma centre and I run an aesthetics business privately. I have far too many clothes for someone who lives in scrubs and workout gear 90% of the time and I occasionally show some of my outfit ideas on this channel.
Hobbies include: talking to people, dogs and cameras.
