    VR Journey to Trappist-1 Solar System 360 Virtual Reality 4k

    TRAPPIST-1, also designated as 2MASS J23062928-0502285 is an ultra-cool dwarf star that is slightly larger but much more massive than the planet Jupiter, located 39.5 light-years from the Sun in the constellation Aquarius. Seven temperate terrestrial planets have been detected orbiting the star, a larger number than detected in any other planetary system.

    Astronomers first discovered three Earth-sized planets orbiting the dwarf star in 2015. A team led by Michaël Gillon at the University of Liège in Belgium detected the planets using transit photometry with the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. On 22 February 2017, astronomers announced four additional exoplanets around TRAPPIST-1. This work used the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope at Paranal, among others, and brought the total number of planets to seven, of which three are considered to be within its habitable zone. The others could also be habitable as they may possess liquid water somewhere on their surface

    This Virtual Reality tour is our impression of what the system may actually look like, as there is no evidence yet of the composition of the atmosphere of the planets. But we do know that 3 of these planets are directly in the Goldilocks zone, (not to cold and not to hot) where liquid water could exist.

    Take a guided journey through the amazing TRAPPIST-1 star system, known to be the home of 7 Earth-size exoplanets orbiting a star that is only a little larger than Jupiter. This immersive VR experience is based on the best current understanding of what these worlds could be like given their sizes, densities, and proximity to their star. While the planetary images are artistic extrapolations, the relative sizes and positions are all portrayed accurately.

    This experience was developed by the Communications and Education group at Caltech/IPAC and has been released in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope mission.

    This 360-degree panorama depicts the surface of a newly detected planet, TRAPPIST-1d, part of a seven planet system some 40 light years away. You can explore this artist’s rendering of an alien world by moving the view using your mouse or your mobile device.

    The depiction is based on the latest scientific data about this planetary system, and this world’s sister planets can be seen as bright points of light in a dark sky. Each world is roughly in Earth’s size range, in terms of both mass and diameter. Further observations will be needed to determine whether any or all of these worlds might be habitable.

    First of all, these cameras can't send much information because of the poor transmission,
    And beyond Mars from our planet, these vehicles can only send 23 kilo bit of homes,

    2MASS J23062928-0502285 is not the catchiest name for a star, so thank some funny Belgian astronomers who discovered a couple of exoplanets around it using the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) last year.

    Since then NASA followed up with the Spitzer space telescope, and a total of 7 rocky planets have been discovered orbiting this tiny star.

    On July 14, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft zipped past Pluto, scanning the dwarf planet in unprecedented detail. Using data from that flyby, The New York Times created a seven-minute virtual reality film. Fly over Pluto’s rugged surface, stand among the icy al-Idrisi Mountains and touch down in frost-rimmed Elliot Crater.

    The film was produced in collaboration with the Lunar and Planetary Institute and the Universities Space Research Association.

  • Hubble studying atmospheres of Trappist-1 exoplanets

    The nearby Trappist-1 star system, at 40 light-years away, contains seven Earth-sized exoplanets. Three of these distant world are in the habitable-zone where liquid water could exist. Scientists are using the Hubble Space Telescope to study the atmosphere composition of these planets to see if any of them could possibly harbor life.

    Welcome to another mind expanding virtual reality space video, This video slowly travels towards the Trappist-1 Exoplanet solar system star, as it approaches the systems sun you can see each planet and its orbital path. You then get right up close to the star, then travel backwards past all the orbital planets, then travel at light speed out of the system and galaxy.

    The TRAPPIST-1 system contains a total of seven planets, all around the size of Earth. Three of them — TRAPPIST-1e, f and g — dwell in their star's so-called habitable zone. The habitable zone, or Goldilocks zone, is a band around every star (shown here in green) where astronomers have calculated that temperatures are just right — not too hot, not too cold — for liquid water to pool on the surface of an Earth-like world.

    While TRAPPIST-1b, c and d are too close to be in the system's likely habitable zone, and TRAPPIST-1h is too far away, the planets' discoverers say more optimistic scenarios could allow any or all of the planets to harbor liquid water. In particular, the strikingly small orbits of these worlds make it likely that most, if not all of them, perpetually show the same face to their star, the way our moon always shows the same face to the Earth. This would result in an extreme range of temperatures from the day to night sides, allowing for situations not factored into the traditional habitable zone definition.

    The system has been revealed through observations from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the ground-based TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope) telescope, as well as other ground-based observatories. The system was named for the TRAPPIST telescope.

  • A Journey to Venus - HAWAII 360°

    This immersive 360 degree video lets you join in a planetary observing trip using some of the world's best telescopes in Hawaii.

    Oxford University researchers are trying to understand how our Universe works, on a wide range of scales and using many different tools. Observations of the Earth’s sibling planets Mars and Venus offers insights into how our three planets formed and evolved and how its fundamental processes work. Spacecraft are the best way to study our neighbouring planets, but these can take decades to get off the ground. In the meantime, powerful insights can be reached by using telescopes to observe the planets.

    In this video, we join Dr. Colin Wilson, a planetary researcher in Oxford University’s physics department on an observing trip to Hawaii, with colleagues Dr Thomas Widemann and Dr. Thérèse Encrenaz (Paris Observatory) and Pedro Machado (CAAUL, Lisbon). They are using two adjacent telescopes at the summit of Mauna Kea – The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and NASA’s Infra-Red Telescope Facility – to measure winds and sulphur dioxide abundances on Venus. The only natural source of sulphur dioxide on Earth is volcanism, so its presence on Venus suggests current or recent volcanic activity on Venus. The amount of sulphur dioxide observed in Venus’s atmosphere is highly variable, which may indicate current, rather than recent, volcanic eruptions - but the sulphur dioxide abundances are affected by weather patterns. By measuring winds and sulphur dioxide concentrations at the same time, Dr. Wilson and colleagues are trying to pin down this elusive signs of volcanic activity, to ascertain whether our neighbouring planet is geologically alive or dead.

    This observing trip was part of a wider research project, combining telescope and spacecraft observations of Venus, in which Oxford University was working alongside partners from across Europe.   • TRAPPIST-1 Planets - Flyaround Animation

    This video depicts artist's concepts of each of the seven planets orbiting TRAPPIST-1, an ultra-cool dwarf star. Over 21 days, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope measured the drop in light as each planet passed in front of the star. Spitzer was able to identify a total of seven rocky worlds, including three in the habitable zone where life is possible. The study established the planets' size, distance from their sun and, for some of them, their approximate mass and density. It also established that some, if not all, these planets are tidally locked, meaning one face of the planet permanently faces their sun.

    The planets appear in the order of innermost to outermost planets.

    These artist's concepts were designed as follows: TRAPPIST-1b, closest to the star, was modeled on Jupiter's moon Io, which has volcanic features due to strong gravitational tugs. TRAPPIST-1c is shown as a rocky, warm world with a small ice cap on the side that never faces the star. TRAPPSIT-1d is rocky and has water only in a thin band along the terminator, dividing the day side and night side.

    TRAPPIST-1e and TRAPPIST-1f are both shown covered in water, but with progressively larger ice caps on the night side. TRAPPIST-1g is portrayed with an atmosphere like Neptune's, although it is still a rocky world. The farthest planet, TRAPPIST-1h, is shown as covered in ice, similar to Jupiter's icy moon Europa.

    The background stars are what you would see if you were in the TRAPPIST-1 system. Orion passes behind the planets, recognizable but distorted from what we’re familiar with, in addition to Taurus and Pleiades.
