Total solar eclipse plunges parts of Chile and Argentina into darkness
Crowds of stargazers in central Chile and parts of Argentina hoping to experience a total solar eclipse saw day turn to night on Monday, even as persistent fog and rain clouds obscured the sky across much of Chile.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, plunging the planet into darkness. Monday’s event was the only solar eclipse of 2020.
More than 100,000 tourists travelled to the popular lakeside villages of Pucon and Villarica, Chile, as well as to several beach communities along the central Pacific coast to view the eclipse, braving a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, according to official reports.
Though the clouds made viewing difficult, the moon completely obscured the sun across a narrow, 56 mile (90km) band of Argentina and Chile around 1 p.m. local time (1600 GMT), to the cheers and applause of tourists.
Several towns including Piedra del Aguila in Nequen province and San Antonio Oeste in Argentina’s Rio Negro province were also plunged into complete darkness.

2016 Total Solar Eclipse Indonesia
The moon shadow path came from west to east, over Sumatra, Sulawesi and the North Maluku, the last tip of Indonesia before the open Pacific.
Despite excellent forecast, unexpected morning clouds disturbed totality phase observed in the island of Pulau Plun, Halmahera. Seven minutes after, the sky was clear :(
However, these circumstances have a bright side ( useless to scientists but beautiful for the amateur eclipse hunter ):
the clouds show clearly the arrival and departure of the moon's shadow, travelling around 3700 km/h and generating a magnificent double sunset right and left :)

Also here is the answer for a frequently asked question about true resolution of an 8K 360° video. Unlike standard videos, in a 360° video you can see only a part of original image (approximately 30 degrees out of 360). As result, the real resolution of the part you can see isn't bigger than 1.3K.

[HD] Total Solar Eclipse 2017 - Daylight to Darkness live during totality - This was filmed South of Yellowstone in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. We were viewing the Total Eclipse next to Jenny Lake in the path of totality. The totality started at 11:35 and lasted about 2 mins 10 seconds from where we were viewing it. Sorry for the snarkiness video toward the end when darkness hit, wasn't looking at the camera at all since it's a once in a lifetime experience, was looking at the sky the whole time during totality while holding the camera.

2017 Total Solar Eclipse Hopkinsville, Kentucky 360º VR in 4K Realtime
This is my 2017 eclipse video with the Samsung Gear 360 (2017).
I did not have much faith in this camera, because it overheats very easy, when recording in 4K. What could go wrong? I picked the right time to start the video, and it did a great job.
From all the videos, and pictures i took, in my personal opinion, this camera was able to capture most of the experience. It is not so much the image quality, but the overall impression it was able to record (with the sound playing a big role).
I didn't cut the video. There is some noise in the image, and movement from the Samsung stitcher software. This could be corrected in the future.
Let me know what you think in the comments below.
I drove 1,600 miles to record this footage. The next total eclipse in my area will be on April 8th, 2024. Subscribe to my channel, i am going to record that one too, if i survive, and the weather allows it.

The 2017 total solar eclipse was definitely one of the coolest natural phenomenons I've ever witnessed. The photos and video I captured today truly can do it no justice. The visuals of totality are of course impressive and awe inspiring but what I found the most interesting was absorbing the atmosphere around me when it happened. It got dark enough to see the stars. There was 360 degree sunset color in the clouds around me. The wind stopped and it got very cold. All wildlife seemed to become quite and still. An eery silence overtook the world around me. It was a total otherworldly experience. You must go see one for yourself. So long as I live I'll never forget today.

You may have experienced the Eclipse for yourself! I hope you had the opportunity to do so.
On August 21, 2017 we (Jeff and Kat Piotrowski) trekked to Casper, Wyoming to experience the total Eclipse. Arriving the previous day to stake out an area to shoot great photography and 4k video. We decided on a ridge overlooking the city of Casper with a full view of the valley floor. We slept in our cars, overnight in the parking lot between the Casper Event Center and the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center. Waking up at 3:30 am, we staked our claim on the ridge line which meant about a 3/4 mile hike with camera gear to the tune of multiple times throughout the day. You couldn’t complain because the view was outstanding, the energy was outstanding and of course, the Eclipse was an event that leaves me at a loss for words.

360° Total Solar Eclipse in Greenville, SC 2017
Shot at Falls Park in Greenville, South Carolina, with a Samsung Gear 360 in 4K on August 21, 2017 during the Great American Eclipse. Totality lasts for about 2:10. Venus is visible to the lower right of the sun during totality. Jupiter is to the lower left over the trees, but is more faint.
Total Solar Eclipse 4K
Music Total Solar Eclipse Science:
This video using actual eclipse images gives a perspective on what people will see during a total solar eclipse. The photos used in my video here were taken in Australia in November, 2012.
There are 5 phases for a total solar eclipse (from Wikipedia's Solar Eclipse article):
1. First contact—when the Moon's limb (edge) is exactly tangential to the Sun's limb.
2. Second contact—starting with Baily's Beads (a twinkling light effect caused by a tiny amount of the sun's light from its edge shining through valleys and mountains on the Moon's surface) and the diamond ring effect. Almost the entire disk is covered.
3. Totality—the Moon obscures the entire disk of the Sun and only the solar corona is visible along with solar prominences (using magnifying optics) protruding from the perimeter of the totality.
4. Third contact—when the first bright light becomes visible after totality and the Moon's shadow is moving away from the observer. Again Baily's beads and the diamond ring effect may be observed.
5. Fourth contact—when the trailing edge of the Moon ceases to overlap with the solar disk and the eclipse completely ends.
This Total Solar Eclipse 4K video features time lapse footage for the last half of the 1st phase (due to the Sun being obscured behind a hill during sunrise) followed by the 3rd phase (totality) and finishing with phases 4 and 5.
During totality we can see the Sun's corona which appears as a bright halo around the shadowed disc. We can also see solar prominences as bright pinkish spots extending from the perimeter of the eclipse. During phase 4 (in my video but also during phase 2) we can see Baily's beads followed by the diamond ring effect. Ordinarily to observe solar prominences one needs special equipment due to the blinding light of the Sun. It is only during the period of complete totality of a total solar eclipse that one can safely use an ordinary telescope to observe such amazing features.
The diamond ring effect is where a very small portion of the Sun is peeking out from behind the moon's shadow and the eclipse takes on the appearance of a diamond ring. In my video I managed to capture this effect at the end of totality. It is one of the more astounding effects to observe during a total solar eclipse.
The images in this video were shot in November, 2012 near Cairns, Australia off of Mulligan highway. A total of 1,990 images in ultra high definition were taken over the course of a few hours from two camera equipped telescopes. These images were then combined into one video. Totality itself was recorded in 507 images during 2 minutes (the duration of totality for this eclipse from this location).
Note: Due to telescope tracking errors at the time of recording, some images at certain points in the time-lapse were enhanced and completed by compositing images from before and after in the sequence.
This video was made in part with the help of the cattle ranch owners where I shot this video, George and Joyce Ahler as well as the Porter family that took me under their wing when trying to gain access to the ranch as well for their hospitality and camaraderie while there! Super folks!
