  • Is Fiber Internet Really Better for Gaming?

    5:59

Gamers are passionate about their internet – I should know since I am one. Gamers say a fiber connection is the best, but is that really true?

    ----------

See our picks for BEST ISP's here:

    ----------

    The Basics:

    - DSL
    -Been around the longest
    -Runs along your phone line
    -Basic internet users
    -Primary weakness is distance.

    -Cable
    -Much faster than DSL
    -Runs through your coax connection
-Doesn't rely on proximity for signal strength
-Weakness is the shared connection and subsequent reliability.

    -Fiber
-Glass/Plastic wiring (means its REALLY fast!)
-Generally symmetrical (matching upload & download speeds)
-Attractive to gamers & twitch streamers.

But speed isn't the most important thing! Here's what is:

    -Latency (ping)
-The time it takes for data to make a round trip between you and
    your ISP
    -LOWER IS BETTER
-This is why Satellite Internet isn't great for gaming

    -Packet Loss
-Data bundles being sent back and forth between you and your
    ISP
-Don't want these getting lost or corrupted
-The closer to ZERO the better

    -Jitter
-The change in latency over time

So... Does speed matter for gaming? You bet, but not as much as you might think. Gaming actually doesn't require lightning speeds!

What matters more is how reliable your connection is when it comes to Latency, Packet Loss, and Jitter. Any internet connection type (DSL, Cable, Fiber) can deliver great results in those categories.

So is Fiber the best? It's newer, more reliable, and tends to deliver the best speeds, as well as Latency, Packet Loss, and Jitter. The only problem is it's REALLY expensive and not available everywhere.

To see how reliable Internet providers are in your area, check out this Lag Report:

  • How Undersea Internet Fiber Optic Cables Are Laid On The Ocean Floor

    3:12

Laying of cables in the oceans of our world is a fascinating business. Men and women toil long and tedious hours to make this possible. Submarine cables are laid down by using specially-modified ships that carry the submarine cable on board and slowly lay it out on the seabed as per the plans given by the cable operator. The ships can carry with them up to 2,000km-length of cable. Depending on the equipment on-board the cable-ship, the type of plow used, the sea conditions and the ocean-bed where the cable is being laid down, cable ships can do anywhere from 100-150km of cable laying per day. Newer ships and plows now do about 200km of cable laying per day.

The cables are specially constructed for submarine operations as they have to endure harsh conditions as well as pressure. Fiber optic cables carry DWDM [Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing] laser signals at a rate of terabytes per second. They use optical repeaters to strengthen the signal which attenuates over long distances.

They have a decade lifespan and costs vary (depending on the length of the cable). The typical cost for a project is anywhere from $100m-$500m. We don't use satellites because they can't carry terabytes of data for less than a billion dollars per communication line.

The coiling of hundreds of miles of cable in the cargo hold is a process that can take between three to four weeks to complete.

Submarine cable laying process starts from the landing station, where a long cable section is attached (connected) to the landing point and then extended out to a few miles in the sea. This end is connected to the cable on the ship and then the ship starts its cable laying process.

The process also involves a plow. The cable is not simply left to sit on the ocean bed, but is actually being fed into a plow, that lays the cable into a trench.

Depending on where the cable is laid out, the cable coming in from the ocean to the landing station might be advertised or not. Most of the time cable consortium companies try to hide the cable as much as they can, so that only those who need to know – municipalities, port authorities and shipping companies – are informed of the exact route of the cable.

When cables are damaged, either divers or specialized small submersibles with cameras and lights are sent down to the seabed to investigate where the cuts are. Then, either the divers or robotic arms on the submersible bring the two ends of the cable to the surface, where they are re-spliced and joined again.

TDS Residential Fiber Installation Experience 2020.
Please excuse my sniffles. It was cold when I was outside during the first part of the video ????

We recently had TDS hook our home up to their new local fiber optic internet service.
I will show you where they laid the fiber in my yard and where and how it was finally installed in my home.
I benchmarked the connection (we have the 600/400 service) and show how I have it connected to the goCoax MOCA coaxial LAN in my home.

Here is a link to my goCoax MOCA devices and installation video:

If anyone is interested in setting up a home LAN but cannot or do not want to run ethernet cables throughout their house, here is a link to the MOCA devices I use for my home LAN:

  • I connected my fiber internet directly to my pfsense router via SFP!

    12:25

I completely bypassed my ISP provided ONT and Wifi Router. I was able to install a SFP+ card in my PfSense box and plug the ISP provided SFP GPON Module Nokia SFP ONT with success.

I got 1.5 gig internet! Video Below:

    FOLLOW UP:

    Router Specs:
    Supermicro X9SCL

    Intel Xeon E3-1220 V2
    4GB Memory
    40GB Intel SSD

The SFP module provided by Telus is a G-010S-A P/N 3FE46541AADA

    A few things to note:
My ISP (Telus) requires you to use the Actiontec wifi router if you have IPTV. I have heard people getting it to work without it, but unreliably. I don't have IPTV, but I think you could create a bridge inside pfsense between one of the RJ45 ethernet jacks and the SFP module resulting in the ability to get a public WAN ip on the Telus actiontec router. I might test this theory at my parents house... if they let me.

If you have fiber phone, my understanding is you need the white Nokia ONT as it has the POTS ports on the back.

I successfully got this to work with a Chelsio T420 dual 10gbe SFP +. Based on my testing, not all cards are compatible.

    4:49

100 megabits per second. Yes. It’s fast. But is it fast enough? Modern modems are capable of handling speeds of several gigabits per second, and many of our connections are going up to and even beyond a gigabit per second. So does a hundred megabits cut it anymore? We’re digging into the world of ISPs (Internet Service Providers) starting with the basics of internet speed.

It's pretty amazing that computers work at all. The notion that we've created these incredibly reliable inter-connected web of low-cost machines is beyond what science fiction could have even imagined just 30 years ago. Many are considering upgrading to fiber internet—with 1Gbps speeds in both directions—however we've upgraded to 10 Gigabit internet which is some of the fastest small-business/residential internet speeds in the United States. The problem is that even with the wold's fastest internet, there are still frequently slowdowns dependent on the task. That's because total bandwidth is just one small piece of the pie. Throughput is determined by lots of factors like latency, routers and switching, infrastructure cabling, caching, and more. Let's talk about them all today.

  • The Making of Infinited Fiber – A Virtual Tour

    12:45

Take a tour of our pilot factory sites and see where the magic happens! This is where cellulose-rich waste – think old jeans, t-shirts or cardboard boxes – forgets its history and is regenerated into a unique new fiber that looks and feels like cotton and is ready to be spun into new yarn. Infinited Fiber Company’s cellulose carbamate production process uses responsible chemistry, and the created textile fiber has unique characteristics, including antimicrobial properties.

Infinited Fiber Company Key Account Director Kirsi Terho takes you through the production process with Chief Technology Officer Sakari Siren, Process Technician Reino Myllykorpi, Pilot Production Manager Jani Mäntylä, and Laboratory Technician Hanna Jähi.

This recording was made for Infinited Fiber Company’s Virtual Open House event on June 23, 2020.

  • JIO FIBER Broadband Plans - 100GB @ 100Mbps for Rs.500! Hindi

    3:50

Reliance JioFiber internet service has been much talked about since the pilot in Maharashtra. It is expected to offer high internet speeds are extremely low prices to consumers who haven’t had the taste of high-speed internet yet. These users were getting speeds of 70-100 Mbps with a free test plan for three months.

Now, some details on pricing of this surface have come out. According to a report by ET, the base price of JioFiber would be Rs. 500 offering 100GB (working out to just Rs. 5 per GB). Compared to this, Airtel offers fiber internet at Rs. 999 for 50GB a month, almost half the data usage at double the price.

The launch of JioFiber is expected during Diwali, in the month of October this year. The pilot is also expected to expand to other cities, like Gurugram and Noida, by June or July with the commercial launch in October, just like it happened for Jio telecom services.
