    Finger, thumb, and wrist range of motion movements are a great way to relieve pain in the hands and fingers. Make sure you are going through the full range of motion.

    Massaging the fingers, hand, and palm area is also a great way to not only relieve pain, but also improve circulation, blood flow, and sensation to the area.

    Finger extension stretches do a great job of working the joints of the fingers closest to your hand, which often are the most painful.

    You can also use a custom hand massager for pain relief like the Breo iPalm 520s. It uses pressure, heat and acupressure to increase circulation to help relieve pain in the hands and fingers.

    The last two exercises help with finger flexion and extension. Having strong fingers help relieve the pain.

    1) Free Hand Exercise:
    Wrist Circular Motion - Move your hand in circular motion for 10 to 15 times.
    1:22 Wrist to and fro motion - Move your hand in free motion.
    1:38 Free Finger Movement - Keep your hand rested and freely bring your fingers together and open your hand. Followed by this you can do
    Gentle Fist - Gently open and close your hands.

    2) Hand Stretches :
    Wrist Stretch - Keep your hand rested and then move your wrist downwards with the help of your other hand. Hold this position for 10 counts with 5 repletion.
    Fingers Stretch - Stretch your fingers with the other hand and hold this position for almost 10 seconds and relax. Make sure whenever you are doing fingers stretching your hand is supported.

    3) Finger and Wrist Strength:
    Finger Raise - For this you need to completely support your hand and then allow your fingers to move up and down. Do this for 10 repetitions.
    Wrist Raise - Take the help of water bottle filled with water try doing up and down 10 repetition.
    Wrist Flexion - Similarly do this exercise by keeping your hand in upwards direction.
    Wrist Circular Motion - Take the help of the water bottle and rotate your hand clockwise and anticlockwise.
    Wrist Rotation - Keep your hand well-supported and then rotate your hand to and fro for at least 10 repetition.

    Getting calluses on fingers for guitar playing is important and one of the main complaints for every beginner guitar player.

    Gary is going to give you some tips on how to toughen up your fingertips for guitar.

    There are a couple of ways to deal with finger pain. One is to use lighter string gauges. Or you can also tune your entire guitar down a half step and put a guitar capo on the first fret. This shortens the scale length of the guitar and eases the string tension.

    If you want to make toughen up your fingers, you can practice playing an acoustic guitar with steel strings.

    There are other ways to help with your finger pain, like getting fingertip covers. They're little plastic sleeves you wear over your finger tips, but this will ultimately be a crutch and mess with the feel of your playing.

    Just make sure you lower the action, use lighter strings and be patient! Calluses will eventually develop and you'll get used to the feel of the strings.

    Help relieve lower back pain during pregnancy with these simple exercises. For this video, I teamed up with Dr. Jen, a pelvic floor physical therapist who also happens to be pregnant! She'll show you her top 5 exercises to help relieve low back pain when you are pregnant by mobilizing and stabilizing the pelvis. Watch more videos at

    The first exercise to help relieve low back pain during pregnancy is an anterior and posterior pelvic tilt. This is when you are emphasizing moving your hips forwards and backwards.

    The next lower back exercise is a lateral pelvic tilt, or moving your pelvis in a side to side direction.

    Now you will focus on stability with your core muscles including the diaphragm, pelvic floor, transversus abdominis, and multifidus muscles (deep spinal muscles). This should be done while you are breathing normally, so try not to hold your breath. After you achieve this, you can add in a bridge to activate the gluteus muscles.

    Then you will get onto all fours, or in quadruped. Then you will do pelvic tilts again, or some call it the cat/dog exercise or stretch. You can also do lateral tilts as well.

    Finally, you will do the child’s pose or prayer stretch. If you are later in your pregnancy, you can use a pillow for support.

    In this lesson, I will show you an easy exercise to practice that will make sure your frethand is in the proper position for playing scales and bar chords.

    As I mention in the video lesson, there are many playing instances when this perfect hand position is not suitable. For things like open chords, bends and vibrato, I more angled hand position is preferable and more natural to your hands.

    But, for a majority of chord and scale playing, having the your palm parallel to the bottom of the fretboard with the proper amount of spacing, along with arched fingers that come down straight onto the string will be the most economical way to play. Economical meaning that it requires the least amount of finger pressure as possible along with being the most mobile.

    One of the greatest classical guitar players of all-time, the great David Russell, uses this practice technique to maintain optimal hand positioning in his playing. If fact, I learned this from attending one of his masterclasses. :)

    There are many different hand types, so it is difficult to nail down an exact way to tell someone to position their fingers. The great thing about the exercises I demonstrate in this video lesson is that it is impossible to do unless you place your hand in the best position for YOUR HANDS.

  • Trigger Finger Surgery

    - Of all of the conditions that can affect the hand, trigger finger is among the most common. As with many conditions of the fingers, it is typically caused and exacerbated by repetitive activity such as typing or text messaging, although it is not limited to these activities alone. Trigger finger most commonly affects the ring finger, but it not uncommon in any of the digits of the hand, and it typified by a snapping of the finger, accompanied with pain.

    Trigger finger affects the flexor tendons, which control flexion of the finger; that is to say, they pull the fingertips into the hand towards the palm. These tendons can develop nodules, or knots, which then become stuck on the pulley bands that normally keep them in position against the finger bones. In particularly bad cases, the nodules can become so large that the tendon is unable to pass through the pulley at all, making it impossible to flex or extend the finger, depending on the position when it becomes stuck.

    Conservative treatment of trigger finger consists of cortisone injection, which can be an effective remedy in up to 50% of occurrences. Should this injection prove ineffective then surgery may be necessary. The procedure is a simple one, and only requires local anesthesia. A small incision is made in the affected finger(s), through which the pulley band upon which the knotted tendon is caught is sliced, freeing the tendon to return to its standard mobility. The wound is then closed and sewn shut with three to four stitches. Mobility returns to the finger almost immediately.

    A light dressing will be placed over the wound, and this must be kept dry for ten days, after which time the stitches are taken out by the doctor, and light activity may be resumed. By about four weeks, any tenderness at the scar site should resolve, and full function returns. It is not uncommon to see trigger finger occur in different digits of the same hand at different times, although recurrence is extremely unlikely in the same digit.
