  • 6 Biggest Megalodon Enemies Ever Existed

    10:36

Megalodon was the biggest shark of the ocean 23 million years ago. It could grow up to 60 ft, and its jaw bite was stronger than a T. Rex’s. So you might think there was nothing that could stop it. But even this massive shark had enemies, and their fights could be lethal.

    TIMESTAMPS:
    Cetotherium 1:36
    Zygophyseter Varolai 3:08
    Aulophyseter 4:31
    Brygmophyseter Shigensis 5:27
    Rhamphosuchus 6:36
    Livyatan Melvillei 8:03

    Music:

    SUMMARY:
    - Cetotherium was a baleen whale from the Cetotheriidae family. It lived from the mid-Miocene period to the Early Pliocene period and grew up to 15 ft. Fossil records have revealed that Cetotherium would be Megalodon’s top target.
    - Zygophyseter lived in the late Miocene period, some 11 to 7 million years ago, and it cruised the Mediterranean region. From fossil records, paleontologists have gathered that Zygophyseter grew to be 20 ft long. It had an asymmetrical cranium, which is commonly associated with high-frequency sound production and echolocation.
    - Aulophyseter was a predatory whale, very similar to modern-day sperm whales. Sperm whales are the largest predators and the largest toothed whales today. Aulophyseter lived in the Miocene period.
    - Brygmophyseter was a highly predatory sperm whale. The only known fossil is a nearly complete skeleton that is dated at 14 to 15 million years old. From it, paleontologists gathered that Brygmophyseter was 23 ft long. Theories suggest that it swam in pods as other whales do.
    - Rhamphosuchus is one of the largest known crocodiles ever to roam Earth. The world wouldn’t even be aware of the existence of Rhamphosuchus if it wasn’t for the discovery of incomplete sets of fossils that are mostly teeth and skulls. Rhamphosuchus is estimated to have been 26 to 36 ft long.
    - Livyatan and Megalodon were 2 of the most terrifying creatures to roam the oceans, and both lived during the Miocene period. Livyatan was a whale that was 60 ft long and weighed up to 50 tons. Its largest teeth were up to 14” long.

It could grow up to 60 ft, and its jaw bite was stronger than a T. Rex’s. It was reckoned to swallow sharks, whales, dolphins for breakfast.

So you might think that nothing could stop it.
However, even this massive shark had enemies, and their fights could be lethal.

Let's imagine the battle between a T.rex versus Godzilla in the middle of the ocean, you'll get the picture.

    8. Cetotherium
Whales and sharks honestly don't get along, mainly because one is passive more times than not, and sharks are usually aggressive hunters. But in the past, whales were very different than those we have today. The closest thing would be the orca, but they aren't even whales. Back in the days of the megalodon, there were many large whales with gigantic teeth and no fear. One of these rivals was probably the Cetotherium.

    7. Zygophyseter Varolai
Try saying that five times fast. While the Zygophyseter Varolai may be a mouthful to say, it does have a more simplistic nickname...the Killer Sperm Whale, and one look at its teeth will show you why that name is pretty accurate. Just as fascinating is that we didn’t even know the Zygophyseter Varolai existed until 2005! That year, paleontologists and geologists came across an almost complete skeleton in southern Italy.

    6. Aulophyseter
You rarely hear the word predatory whale in modern times, since we usually think of whales as peaceful creatures. But sometimes people use the term to describe sperm whales or orcas, or during the Miocene period, the Aulophyseter. This was a whale that prided itself on its predatory ability. This extinct genus of sperm whale weighed around 1,100 kg (2400 lb) and had measured about 6.5 meters long. It was related to other predatory whales that existed at the time such as Acrophyseter and the Livyatan.

    5. Brygmophyseter Shigensis
Also known as the “biting sperm whale”, it is the case of another whale only known to exist because of a nearly complete skeleton that was found. While some pieces were missing, it was enough to prove that Brygmophyseter Shigensis was a real thing, and the only species to exist under the Brygmophyseter genus. For now, you know, these things are always changing!!

    4. Rhamphosuchus
In the modern world, crocodiles have been documented to be pretty long, with many getting over 20 feet (6m) in length. But in the prehistoric world, there was a crocodile species that got much bigger than that!!! The Rhamphosuchus. To be clear, the fossil record for the Rhamphosuchus is more incomplete than you might think. In fact, there's no complete fossil for the creature, and most of what we know has been recreated from incomplete skulls and teeth.

    3. Leviathan Melvillei
There are many legends in the ocean, and one of the most prominent ones is a creature called the Leviathan, a giant biblical sea monster. But guess what? This technically wasn't a legend, because fossil hunters in Europe came across one of the biggest predators that ever lived. Scientists decided to call the creature Leviathan Melvillei- melvillei in honor of Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick.

    2. Megalodon
Surprised? You wouldn't be if you knew one of the darker secrets about shark life...many shark species are cannibals. Or, they have the ability to eat their fellow shark should they be in a pinch. Which is actually one reason why the Megalodon's were cannibals, they needed a lot of food.

    1. Did it really even have enemies?
It's important to ask this question because to some scientists and researchers, the idea of the Megalodon shark having any enemies at all is kind of ridiculous. After all, this was a shark that was between 60-90 feet long, had the bite strength of a T-Rex, and could rip just about anything in the water to shreds. So, could such a beast even have a threat under the water?

Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

  • 10 Most Dangerous Megalodon Enemies Of All Time

The megalodon shark was one of the ocean's greatest predators of all time. But I bet you didn't know what other prehistoric monsters were even bigger, badder and scarier than this real life jaws!

Subscribe for more amazing videos! ► ◄

The megalodon was one of the world’s most fearsome predators, but they went extinct 2.6 million years ago after roaming the oceans for millions of years unchallenged. They are still the world’s largest shark to have ever existed and one of the most successful apex predators ever. But is the world’s largest and most terrifying shark without enemies? And what exactly caused them to go extinct?

Scientists have uncovered fearsome creatures that can rival the mighty megalodon in both size and ability. Some of them actually existed during the reign of the megalodon and may have challenged the ferocious creature for its hunting grounds. But it is not just prehistoric creatures that rival the abilities of this great shark. In fact, some of our strongest and most successful predators today may have been able to outmatch the megalodon in strength, agility and intelligence.

In this video, we have compiled a list of the megalodon’s most likely enemies. We theorize about what may have happened if the megalodon had been able to face off against these threats--or if perhaps they already did. We also explore the myths that surround the continued existence of some of these prehistoric creatures.

  • 10 Facts About the Biggest Shark Ever Existed

    9:06

Its full name is Carcharocles Megalodon, but some shark enthusiasts just call it “the Meg.” Whatever name it goes by, this giant was the biggest baddie of the ocean when it terrorized the waters 2 million years ago. If you’re afraid of modern sharks, get ready for these facts because this prehistoric predator puts them all to shame!

    TIMESTAMPS:
The Megalodon was the biggest shark ever 0:58
We don’t have many fossils of it today 1:40
The Megalodon had enormous teeth 2:35
The Megalodon had a killer smile 3:13

The Megalodon had a powerful bite 4:38
Its favorite dish was whales 5:24

    #megalodon #largestshark

    Music:

    SUMMARY:
    - Different estimates put its size anywhere from 45 up to 60 feet in length. To put that into perspective, 60 feet would make the Megalodon about 4 times the size of the average great white shark.
    - There’s currently a very limited amount of Megalodon fossils. Shark skeletons are made of cartilage, which doesn’t fossilize very well. So, that means almost all that remains of the mighty Meg are its teeth, which have been found on every continent except for Asia and Antarctica.
    - Most of its teeth were about 4 to 5 inches long, but the largest tooth ever found was 7.48 inches, and it was discovered in Peru.
    - In order to feast regularly on large prey, the Meg had an impressive set of 276 teeth that sat in 5 rows in its mouth. Most fossilized teeth that have been recovered show a significant amount of wear on the tips, and some have had the tips completely broken off from biting on the bones of its prey.
    - Popular belief has it that the great white shark is a descendant of the Meg, but that claim has been disproven. When the first fossilized teeth of the Megalodon were discovered, they placed the mighty shark in the same genus as the great white.
    - In order to chew on the bones of its prey, the Meg needed to have a very powerful bite. To figure out how strong its bite was, a research group led by biologist Dr. Stephen Wroe conducted simulations and reported that the Megalodon could bite down on its prey with 24,000 to 40,000 pounds of pressure.
    - . Scientists know that the Megalodon loved to eat whales because fossilized whale bones have been found with bite marks that match the Megalodon’s teeth.
    - When the Megalodon was ready to give birth, it would travel to shallow waters where large predators couldn’t follow.
    - The Megalodon wasn’t the only giant to terrorize the oceans. Livyatan Melvillei was a sperm whale that was over 60 feet long, weighed more than 50 tons, and its 14-inch teeth were the biggest of the animal kingdom.
    - The Megalodon was the top predator of the ocean... until it wasn’t. The giant shark went extinct 2.6 million years ago, and there are several theories as to why this happened.

Could there really be a predator out there in our oceans that was large enough, tough enough, and tenacious enough to take down one of the most intimidating creatures of all time? We certainly think so.

At over 60 feet long and with a bite strength equivalent to that of a T-Rex, the megalodon could tear apart just about anything in its path. Well, that’s what we thought, until now. As it turns out, there were a number of other dangerous, terrorizing creatures that traversed our oceans - and they could put up one heck of a fight. Could the deadly livyatan be the reason that the meg went extinct? Or was it because of a group of giant crocodiles asserting their dominance? Perhaps the modern-day orca, or one of its prehistoric relatives have a little more firepower than they exude…

  • THE MOST DANGEROUS MEGALODON ENEMIES

    11:09

The Megalodon Shark is historically considered the master of the seas; however, it was not alone in the oceans millions of years ago. There were very dangerous enemies who sought to dethrone him and could even kill him at times.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -MEGALODON VS LIVYATAN MELVILLEI (LEVIATHAN)
It definitely was the most suitable creature to give it a good fight and even annihilate the huge megalodon from the seas.

    -MEGALODON VS ZYGOPHYSETER VAROLAI
It is another of the extinct odontoceti cetaceans, belonging to the sperm whale family. And his name rightly means murderous sperm whale.

    -MEGALODON VS RHAMPHOSUCHUS
Called crocodile snout or crocodile with beak, it is an extinct crocodilian genus, whose appearance resembles the modern Malaysian false gavial.

    -MEGALODON VS BRYGMOPHYSETER SHIGENSIS
It is a species of extinct Odontoceti cetacean, which means jagged, that lived during the Miocene in Japanese waters. Well, it is believed that also in all the oceans of the time.

    -MEGALODON VS ALBICETUS
It is a genus of extinct sperm whale that lived about 15 million years ago in the middle Miocene. In 1909, it was discovered in Santa Bárbara, California, where it is presumed to be a native.

    -MEGALODON VS CETOTHERIUM
Its name means whale beast and it is a disappeared genus of Mysticeti cetacean linked with modern whales.

    -MEGALODON VS AULOPHYSETER
It is an extinct genus of sperm whale that lived during the Miocene, a time when the Megalodon was already imposing in all seas of the planet.

    --MEGALODON VS THE WORST ENEMY
This enemy meant its definitive extinction of the world, or at least it is what we believe.

  • 11 Largest Creatures Ever Existed on Earth

    10:01

The largest land animal of our time is the African elephant! It weighs more than the anchor of a cruise ship and is 5 times heavier than the tallest animal on the planet - a giraffe. But still, the elephant loses a lot to Argentinosaurus - the largest herbivorous dinosaur in the world. This giant will cover just over half of the baseball field and weighs like 3 subway cars.

But no matter how dangerous and huge land animals are, in fact, they’re babies compared to those creatures that live in the seas and oceans. For example, the sperm whale weighs like a herd of 50 cows, and almost three times as much as Shastasaurus, while being of a similar length! Yup, today, we're talking about the largest creatures in the world!

    SUMMARY:
    - The largest modern land predator is the polar bear. It is believed that on Earth, the polar bear has no enemies among animals.
    - Spinosaurus is considered the largest land predator that ever existed on the planet. Its length reached 49 feet, approximately 2 London red buses.
    - About 460 million years ago, sea scorpions resembling large space bugs inhabited shallow waters and terrified all small marine mammals.
    - Of modern insects, no one will compete with this creature.
    - The largest marine predator ever is considered Shastasaurus. It lived about 235 million years ago and reached a length of 65.5 feet.
    - The largest flying bird to date is an albatross. Its wingspan is 11 feet - almost like the length of the Volkswagen Beetle.
    - But the albatross easily loses to its distant ancestor - the bird Argentavis, who lived 5-8 million years ago. Its wingspan is almost 20 feet.
    - A blue whale is the largest creature that ever existed on Earth appears on the ring. Its size is comparable to a 9-story building.
    - Unlike land, the ocean has a much greater chance of a huge creature appearing.
    - Almost all seafarers have been scaring each other with stories about Kraken since ancient times, but the worst thing in these tales is that they’re absolutely true.
    - Around the world, since the 17th century, many Kraken sightings have been recorded. Modern scientists have given them a more scientific name - architeuthis.
    - If the organism is given a safe area and environment with unlimited food, then in the process of evolution a real Godzilla may appear.
    - The bones inside animals can't withstand enormous weight, but the body structure of almost all insects is completely different. Outwardly, they are covered with a skeleton, while soft tissues are hidden inside.
    - The tallest tree in the world is Hyperion — a Sequoia sempervirens. Its height reaches 379 feet! It is 74 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty and about the same height as a 38-story building!

    SUMMARY:
    - According to National Geographic, one of the smallest sharks scientists know about is called the dwarf lanternshark, and they’re an adorable 7” to 8” long.
    - The whale shark is not only a massive shark but is the largest known fish species alive, according to National Geographic. An average adult whale shark can grow as long as a school bus!
    - Megalodon roamed the ocean a long time ago — oh, about 15.9 to 2.6 million years back between the early Miocene and late Pliocene eras. It could reach anywhere between 45 ft to 60 ft in length with jaws more than 6 ft wide!
    - Shonisaurus lived on Earth during the late Triassic Period, about 215 million years ago. These prehistoric reptiles grew to be about 50 ft long and weighed about 60,000 lb!
    - Ophthalmosaurus thrived during the late Jurassic period and lived in oceans all over the world. It weighed somewhere around 6,000 lb and grew to approximately 16 ft long.
    - Another marine reptile that lived during the Jurassic Period was known as Liopleurodon. A more aggressive marine reptile, these carnivorous sea beasts weighed about 5,000 lb and grew to around 30 ft long.
    - Ichthyosaurus only grew to about 6 ft, which would put them at the same height as a guy who was slightly taller than average today.
    - The orca, also known as the killer whale, is a toothed whale and can grow to anywhere from 23 ft to 32 ft, which is slightly smaller than a school bus.
    - The largest whale that still exists today is the blue whale. If you were to put a blue whale next to a school bus, it would look like it could swallow it.
    - The Portuguese man o’ war, tentacles and all, can reach a length of 165 ft long. While this thing may look a lot like a jellyfish, it’s actually known as a siphonophore, and there are hundreds and sometimes thousands of them that are genetically identical.

  • 10 Extinct Animals We Shouldnt Bring Back

    10:26

Scientists these days are serious about bringing animals extinct millions of years ago back to life. They even have a list of candidates, which includes the woolly mammoth, dodo, mastodon, and Tasmanian tiger. However, the animals you’re about to see are not desirable and will not be loved by humans. Those scary monsters from the past won’t do anyone any good.

    Megalodon 9:15

    Music: Lookahead

    SUMMARY
-Meganeura, which was actually a griffinfly, was a bit smaller than a crow and had a wingspan of about 2.3 ft. A Meganeura’s diet consisted of insects, invertebrates, and small amphibians.
-Phoberomys pattersoni (also known as “guinea-zilla”) weighed 1,500 lb and was 4.9 ft tall. It’d be impossible not to scream if you saw a buffalo-like rodent charging at you.
-A prehistoric cannibal. Dunkleosteus was not a part of the shark family but was an arthropod or placoderm fish. Its bite was as powerful as that of the Tyrannosaurus rex and modern crocodiles.
-Helicoprion was 35 ft long with shark-like features and was twice the size of the largest known great white shark. Its tooth whorl, which consisted of 15 to 18 serrated teeth, worked like a circular saw when eating its prey.
-Deinosuchus was related to the alligator and could grow up to 39 ft long. They preyed on sea turtles and dinosaurs.
-Gigantopithecus, which translates to “big ape,” was a relative of orangutans. Its teeth, which were falsely branded as “dragon teeth,” were made to grind and chew plants, bamboo in particular.
-Megapiranhas were 2.3 ft long and weighed 20–30 lb. The megapiranha had a bite force of 279–1,069 lb.
-Around 500,000 to 2 million years ago, the giant short-faced bear was the most powerful carnivore around. Its scientific name was “Arctodus simus,” and it weighed between 2,000 and 3,500 lb.
-Titanoboa cerrejonensis’ length was about 40–45 ft, and its average weight was 1.25 tons. Titanoboa looked like a boa constrictor but behaved like an anaconda.
-Megalodon was the largest shark to ever live on Earth. Its teeth were 5” to 7” in height and had a bite force of 24,400–41,000 lb.

  • What If Megalodon Sharks Didnt Go Extinct?

    11:21

2,600,000 years ago, megalodons terrorized the seas and oceans, and they were believed to be the largest sharks to ever live on Earth. They were also the largest predators in vertebrate history. What if this enormous marine carnivore had never become extinct? It isn’t a fun scenario to imagine, but, hey, we’ve also been toying with the idea ever since we saw fossils of dinosaurs and other beastly creatures that once roamed our planet. These gigantic animals ruled Earth millions of years ago, and we can’t help but wonder what our life would have been like if we’d coexisted with them.

    SUMMARY
-Megalodon shark lived during the Neogene period, was between 52 ft and 59 ft, and its weight could vary from 70 to 100 tons. During the Renaissance period, the megalodon’s teeth were mistaken for the fossilized tips of the tongues of dragons and snakes.
-The only remains of a megalodon to be discovered were its vertebrae and tooth. They were found around the continents of Australia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
-Back in 2016, researchers at the University of Zurich’s Paleontological Institute and Museum found that the real reason the megalodons became extinct was due to competition over food.
-The megalodon immediately clamped its teeth onto the body of its prey, which resulted in pulverized ribs and a ruptured heart and lungs. The second attack method of the megalodon was to rip its prey’s fins to immobilize it before chow time.
-Had the megalodon shark survived, the aquatic biodiversity could have been rich if that had happened. However, the super predators that existed along with megalodons would also still be alive.
-Other species that have caused terror on Earth were the Aegirocassis benmoulae, the Sarcosuchus imperator, the Megatherium americanum, the Titanis walleri, or “Terror Bird”.

    SUMMARY:
    - When a baby blue is born, it's already bigger than a hippo! At 25 feet long, their 3-ton young can even weigh more than an elephant.
    - The length of the Argentinosaurus could reach 115 feet, and according to different estimates, its weight was from 73-85 tons. These dinosaurs were pretty slow, only reaching a top speed of about 5 mph.
    - The average length of Patagotitan mayorum was a whopping 122 feet. That’s as long as a Boeing 717 commercial jet!
    - Hyperion is a coast redwood, also known as Sequoia sempervirens. This California native was found in 2006, and it’s a staggering 379.65 feet tall!
    - The General Sherman Tree is about 2,000 years old. Its height is just 274.9 feet.
    - Imagine 1,700 football fields spread over an area of 3.4 square miles. That’s how big the honey fungus is! It grows in the Blue Mountains in Oregon.
    - The Pando quaking aspen colony, a.k.a. The Trembling Giant, consists of 47,000 genetically identical clones. They grow from a single underground parent clone and behave as one organism.

  • 10 Biggest Sea Dinosaurs That Ever Existed on Earth

    11:23

Whatever lives in the sea nowadays can't be compared with the huge monsters that dominated the depths millions of years ago. And by “monsters” we mean long-extinct marine reptiles and dinosaurs. Since many people are better acquainted with the land-roaming giants of the past, this video will open your eyes to those that ruled the waters!

Did you know, for example, that pliosauruses were real giants, with the largest species weighing more than 30 tons and growing up to 40 feet long? Also, this animal had an incredibly strong bite. In fact, it was four times more powerful than that of the mighty T-rex!

    TIMESTAMPS:
    Pliosaurus 1:14
    Kronosaurus 2:15
    Nothosaurus 3:07
    Styxosaurus 4:10
    Albertonectes 5:15
    Thalassomedon 6:16
    Tylosaurus 7:23
    Shonisaurus 8:07
    Mosasaurus 9:00
    Shastasaurus 9:53

    #dinosaurs #prehistoricanimals #seacreatures

    Music by Epidemic Sound

    SUMMARY:
    - The largest Kronosaurus ever found was 34 feet long from snout to tail and likely weighed about 12 tons. This marine reptile’s teeth weren't really deadly; they were only a few inches long and not all that sharp.
    - . Some experts state that Nothosauruses could snap their long heads sideways to catch a passing fish, kinda like how a crocodile does. Surprisingly, researchers say that these reptiles shared a lot of similar features with the modern sea lion.
    - The Styxosaurus belonged to the Plesiosaur family and lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, around 85 to 70 million years ago. Styxosauruses were about 35 feet in length, but over 16 feet of that consisted just of their long snake-like neck! They had a comparatively small body and weighed approximately 4 tons.
    - The Albertonectes was another representative of the Plesiosaur family, meaning that this marine reptile had a small head on an incredibly long neck and large flipper-like limbs that helped it move through the water. These creatures occupied the seas around North America 76 to 70 million years ago.
    - Thalassomedon means “sea lord” in ancient Greek, and there's a pretty good reason behind this name. These representatives of the Plesiosaur family were huge predators that could reach 40 feet in length. That’s about as big as 4-story building!
    - The Tylosaurus belonged to the Mosasaur family. It dominated the shallow seas of North America about 85 to 80 million years ago. This was an enormous predator, with the biggest representatives reaching 45 feet in length.
    - The Shonisaurus lived on our planet during the Late Triassic Period, approximately 215 million years ago. The remains of this creature were first discovered in Nevada in 1920, not far from the Shoshone Mountains. This prehistoric reptile resembled a huge chubby dolphin.
    - The Mosasaurus is a truly gigantic predator that dominated the seas all over the world about 66 million years ago. According to fossil evidence, some specimens could be more than 50 feet in length. This fact makes the Mosasaurus the biggest marine carnivore of its time.
    - The Shastasaurus is the biggest marine reptile that has ever existed. These predators lived during the Late Triassic Period about 210 million years ago.

    Liopleurodon 9:07

    Music by Epidemic Sound

    SUMMARY:
    - The Fangtooth is carnivorous and feeds on just about anything it can find that gets caught in its sharp-toothed mouth. These fish rely on their “contact chemoreception” to find prey.
    - The Dumbo Octopus is the deepest living octopus scientists know of, according to oceana.org. They are known as “umbrella octopuses” since their arms are connected by webbed skin. When they spread them apart, they look like an umbrella…a slimy, hungry, deep-sea umbrella.
    - You can see through the Barreleye Fish’s head! Some scientists believe that this transparent head lets the fish collect a bit more light in the dark depths of the sea, which gives them an advantage over other fish that hunt blindly.
    - The Seadevil Anglerfish has a fishing-rod type appendage on its forehead that has a glowing light attached to the end to attract animals. Once these animals come close enough to the light — BAM! They’re captured by the Seadevil’s massive jaws.
    - The Goblin Shark looks like a cross between a shark and a creature from your worst nightmare. These sharks boast a protruding sword-like snout with a jaw that juts out to match. Unlike other sharks that have more of a gray hue, this creepy thing looks not-so-pretty in pink.
    - There are over 40 species of hatchetfish that sport thin bodies covered in shiny scales. That’s why they often look metallic. These fish only grow to be around 6”, but they’re able to handle the pressure of the deep sea, living 5,000 ft below the surface!
    - Not quite. The Zombie Worm isn’t an undead creature of the deep sea; it is very much alive. It’s also known as the Bone Worm, and it can swallow bones of massive mammals like whales.
    - Along with some other creatures on this list, the Deep-Sea Dragonfish relies on its bioluminescent body parts to catch prey. It also uses its hanging appendage, which boasts a little red light on the end, coming out from its lower jaw.
    - Studying the Frilled Shark is like looking through a portal back to prehistoric times. That’s because scientists think that these eel-like sharks haven’t changed much since their oldest ancestors roamed the deep-sea waters, so they’re sometimes referred to as “living fossils.”
    - Scientists believe Liopleurodon thrived in this deep-sea trench because of its ability to swim long distances and its 4 paddle-like limbs. While they probably weren’t able to propel themselves toward prey like other animals of the area, they did manage to accelerate and attack very ruthlessly and efficiently.

List of most terrifying sea monsters ever:
    9. Predator X
Predator X is the most powerful marine reptile ever discovered. Over 15 meters long, and weighing about 4 tons, it was twice as big as most Jurassic predators.
The giant reptile roamed the seas about 150 million years ago and was officially classified as a new species. Now known as Pliosaurus funkei, it had a massive 2m skull with a bite four times as powerful as a Tyrannosaurus rex. (Although I prefer the name Predator X). Studies of the brain cavity of Predator X has revealed that its brain was actually similar to the much smaller great white shark?.
In 2006, scientists found two massive pliosaur skeletons in Norway. The giant creatures, looked slightly different from other pliosaurs discovered in England and France over the last century and a half.
The pliosaur family had short necks and four large, paddle-shaped limbs like a turtle that allowed them to move up to 5m per second. The newly discovered funkei species likely lived closer to 145 million years ago and ate plesiosaurs, related long-necked, small-headed reptiles.
The new analysis shows P. funkei had longer front paddles than other pliosaurs, and different teeth.
This predator is still bigger than the largest living apex predator, the whale, which tops out at about 9m (30 ft) long.
    8. Plesiosaurs
Plesiosaurs were a group of marine reptiles, or dinosaurs-that-weren’t-actually-dinosaurs but lived at the same time during the Jurassic Period. It had a tiny head and a long neck, paddle flippers, and a tail. Even though it was smaller than Predator X, Its mouth was full of needle-like teeth pointing inward, a perfect death trap for prey and for ripping flesh.
In 1987 a plesiosaur fossil was discovered with the bones of an embryo in its abdomen, proving that the animal gave birth to live young. This creature seems to have somehow given rise to the Loch Ness Monster as the physical description is very similar. Plesiosaurs would swallow stones weighing about 5 pounds (2.2kg) to help them digest their prey. If there was one plesiosaur you needed to watch out for, it was Liopleurodon (lye plur i dun). This carnivorous beast could weigh over 3,500 pounds and reach over 30 feet in length, including jaws that are believed to be 10 feet alone, complete, of course, with a very wide jaw and several rows of razor-sharp teeth. Their bodies consisted of a unique, paddle design for limbs, which has been tested and proven on small swimming robots that the Liopleurodon would not have been super fast they were terrifyingly agile. Most likely they hunted similar to the crocodiles of today, with short and fast burst attacks. So that makes them just perfect for any underwater haunted...aquarium.
    7. Giant Sea Scorpion (Jaekelopterus rhenaniae)
Since there is no way I can pronounce this we'll just call this one the Giant Sea Scorpion. Larger than a human and about the size of a crocodile (2.5m), the 390-million-year-old sea scorpion was the top predator of its day. This was one of the two largest arthropods to have ever lived, reaching a length of over 8 feet of armored, clawed horror. Most of us freak out at the thought of a tarantula, so it’s easy to imagine screaming like a banshee if you ever swam by one of these.
A huge fossilized spiky claw discovered in Germany in 2007 measured 18 inches (46 cm). We've known about super sized insects for years now but it wasn't until this discovery that scientists realized just how big some of these creepy crawlies could get. The next biggest fossil arthropods were massive millipedes that grew more than 2 meters (6.5 feet) long,
    6. Basilosaurus
The Basilosaurus’ name and appearance make it seem like an ancient reptile, but it’s actually a blood-thirsty ancestor of today’s whales. It's ironic given that its name means “King Lizard,” but that is because when it was discovered by Richard Owen in 1834, it was thought be a reptile. It wasn't until over 10 years later that he discovered it was actually a mammal and tried to rename it the Zeuglodon, meaning Yoke Tooth, but that didn’t catch on.

  • A Shark Scarier Than the Megalodon Could Exist

    9:22

Do you know anything about the Black Demon? While oceans cover more than 70% of our planet's surface, people have explored only 5% of the ocean floor. So it's no wonder that the incredible depths hide some pretty terrifying secrets! For example, there’s the Black Demon, a legendary shark said to equal the prehistoric Megalodon in size.

According to the legend, the Black Demon resembles the infamous Megalodon. This terrifying creature was first noticed not far from Mexico's Baja Coast in the Gulf of California. People started to report a huge black shark whose size could be compared with that of the Megalodon. It resembled the great white shark but for its massive tail and dark coloring. The creature got the nickname “El Demonio Negro” (which is Spanish for “The Black Demon”). This shark treats humans extremely aggressively. According to several reports, the creature systematically attacks boats.

    SUMMARY:
    - Megalodon was a prehistoric predator that lived from 23 to 2.6 million years ago. It was a truly massive creature. It could grow up to 60 ft, which is longer than a school bus, and its weight could be more than 70 tons, which equals the weight of 10 elephants.
    - The Black Demon was first noticed not far from Mexico's Baja Coast in the Gulf of California. People started to report a huge black shark whose size could be compared with that of the Megalodon.
    - In 2008, fisherman Eric Mack stated that a huge black shark rocked his boat. He also mentioned that the shark had large sharp teeth and a huge tail that stuck out of the water for no less than 5 ft. The animal looked like a great white but was much more massive.
    - In 2012, a real great white shark was caught in the Sea of Cortez. It was more than 20 ft long and weighed a whopping 2,000 lb. However, it was white and didn't resemble the shark described in the legend.
    - Some scientists think that if the Black Demon really exists, it's probably an oversized great white that suffers from melanism.
    - Other researchers hope that the mysterious animal might be a new species of shark that evolved from the Megalodon. Naturally, there are also skeptics who are sure that the Black Demon is a whale shark.
    - There's no real proof of its existence except for the testimonies of eyewitnesses. At the same time, nobody can claim that the creature doesn't exist, even if it hasn't been found.
    - In those depths live the most bizarre animals ever known. Ghost sharks, demon cat sharks, deep-sea dogfish. Some of them look like characters from a low-budget horror film.

  • Did They Find a Living Megalodon In the Mariana Trench?

    8:29

Сould Megalodon sharks still be alive in the deepest parts of the ocean? Science tells us that Megalodon sharks are extinct. Given that it was a massive shark with noticeable feeding habits, we guess that if Megalodon sharks were still roaming the oceans, they would probably have been spotted by someone by now. But perhaps not if they lived in the deepest place on Earth: the Mariana Trench.

    SUMMARY:
    - The Megalodon shark roamed the oceans as early as 23 million years ago, and we have their fossils to prove their existence. When people first encountered Megalodon teeth, they believed them to be rocks that had made their way to Earth from the moon.
    - Megalodon was the biggest shark to terrorize the ocean, and it is thought to have gone extinct 2.6 million years ago. The name Megalodon means “big tooth.” Most of the recovered Megalodon fossil teeth have been 4” to 5”. But there are a few enormous teeth that are over 7”.
    - The Mariana Trench is 6.83 miles deep and measures more than 1,500 miles long and 43 miles wide. To put the depth into perspective, if you were to put Mount Everest into the Mariana Trench, the top would still be sticking out. To put the length into perspective, in 1,500 miles you could fit all the states between Florida and Massachusetts. 1,500 miles is also the distance between Madrid, in Spain, and Copenhagen, in Denmark.
    - To survive in the Mariana Trench, Megalodon would have had to adapt to the living conditions and evolve. It would also have to switch its diet from whales, dolphins, sea lions, and sea cows to whatever organisms reside in the Mariana Trench and hope that it could find and eat its usual 2,500 lb of food per day.
    - According to the United Nations, there are 7.6 billion people in the world today, and only 3 of them have made it to the deepest point on Earth. The reality is that with so little research, it is impossible to know what lies in the depths of the Mariana Trench.

    SUMMARY:
    - About 2.6 million years ago marked the beginning of the era known as the Pleistocene. At the beginning of this era, temperatures began to cool and glaciers started to form all over.
    - While there’s no doubt that the Megalodon definitely went extinct, it probably wasn’t because they couldn’t keep up with whales in the cooler temperatures.
    - Though the Megalodon were ferocious and scary, there were actually other flesh-hungry predators sharing the ocean that liked to eat a lot of the same things that these giant sharks did.
    - One of the Megalodon’s biggest competitors in the deep blue during the mid-Miocene era was the now extinct genus of sperm whale known as the Livyatan Melvillei.
    - By the end of the Miocene, the Carcharodon Hubbelli wasn’t afraid to go head-to-head with the mighty Megalodon when it came to hunting for prey.
    - As time moved forward into the Pliocene era, whales were starting to disappear. While there were about 60 different whale species in the previous Miocene age, only 40 remained by the time of the Pliocene.
    - At this time, the Megalodon had to put their game faces on and fight even harder against the great white sharks who were smaller and faster.
    - Today’s marine life would be a little different if the Megalodon was still around. For one thing, we may not have the massive whale species we’ve come to know, like the Blue Whale.
    - While today’s great white sharks aren’t even close to being as big as the Megalodon, they seem to be following in its fin-steps. The great white grows about 3 feet larger than its ancestors that swam alongside the Megalodon during the Pliocene.

  • 7 Reasons Why The Megalodon Shark Went Extinct

    12:19

From its size, to what it ate, to what it fought against, join me as I reveal to you 7 reasons why the Megalodon Shark went extinct.
    7. Its Size Did It No Favors
When it comes to the size of the Megalodon, it was without a doubt the largest shark ever born. Most estimates have the Megaldon between 50-60 feet when fully grown, and that makes it vastly larger than Hammerheads, Bull Sharks, and yes, much larger than the infamous Great White Shark. But even the largest shark in the world today, the Whale Shark, doesn't compare to the size and scope that the Megalodon had. This shark was a true monster, and it was the Apex Predator of the ancient oceans when it reigned millions of years ago.
But how would its size make it a major target? Well, you need to think about what it means to have a large body. A large body needs more food to give itself energy, because without that, it can't survive. Whales in today's world have a way of circumventing this by eating small food and getting the most out of it that they can. They don't need to eat copious amounts of food in some cases (though whales like Orcas prefer to do that).
However, for the Megalodon, it couldn't afford to do that, one of the most interesting things that scientists speculate is that the Megalodon needed an astounding 1-2 tons of food A DAY to eat. That's a lot of fish, and other things, obviously.
Can you imagine eating that much food? It's a lot, like a WHOLE lot. But that's what the Megalodon needed. And with it needing that much food every day just to survive...can you really expect it to live for extended periods of time? Because while it did in context...it didn't last forever, and its hunger was one big tipping point for its extinction...
    6. Lack Of Food
I want you to think about a scenario with me for a second, ok? Picture the food you usually eat in a week. Everything you eat. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner...and desert...because we all KNOW you eat desert. Anyway! Picture all of that food, and now imagine that it's the end of the week, and you need to get more food. Where do you go? The grocery store or supermarket, right? (or have certain delivery places drop off food I suppose). Either way, there is a place where you go to get the food when you run out.
But now imagine...that you go that store and it's empty. Or your delivery place says it's out of stock. What do you do? You got to ANOTHER store, and another, and another, until you find food. Because if you don't have food...you'll die, right?
For the Megalodon, this was a very real problem that it had. As noted, it needed to eat between 1-2 tons of food every single day. Granted, the oceans in those days were very different from the ones now, but the same principles apply. Mainly, if you eat a lot of food, and it doesn't get restocked, then the food supplies are going to go bare. And that's what started to happen.
The fish and whales and other creatures that the Megalodon ate started to either die out, or not be as numerous as before. There are many factors for this, but one of the biggest ones is the Megalodon itself. Remember, this isn't a single shark, it's a whole SPECIES, and each ONE of these sharks needed to be fed a large amount of food. So imagine hundreds, if not thousands (there's no definitive number of how many of these sharks existed during their time on the planet) of these sharks going through the oceans and eating just about anything they wanted? That would claim a lot of fish lives, and they wouldn't be able to grow back instantly.
So eventually, the oceans got kind of sparce. No food, no energy, no energy, no life. And when times got REALLY tough, the Megalodon went towards a very basic instinct...
    5. Cannibalism
In the world today, with as advanced as we are, the idea of cannibalism may seem like a foreign concept. And yet, throughout the world, both with people and with animals, cannibalism still exists. What's more, for some species, it's actually a way of life itself. And yeah, sharks are actually included in that, there are many shark species out right now that will eat their own species when the timing and need is right, including Hammerheads, Tiger Sharks, and yes, the great white. And during the ancient times of the world, the Megalodon was a part of that as well.
In this particular case though, it wasn't so much an act of desire as it was of need. As I noted before, there came a time when the oceans of the world were getting a lot less populated, and that drastically reduced the things that the Megalodon could eat. So, when it was running out of its basic foods that it could eat, it branched out and went after other Megalodons.
Barbaric? Maybe, but remember, the Megalodons were 60 feet long, and weighed a LOT, so by eating one of their own, they would most definitely get the food that they need in order to survive. But again, it came at a cost. By them attacking one another..

  • What If You Were Eaten by a Whale?

    9:42

What would happen if a whale swallows you? The human brain is an intriguing thing. You may be lying in your bed ready for sleep when, all of a sudden, dozens of what-ifs start to pop up in your head. And one day, a terrifying thing may occur to you: could a human survive being swallowed by a whale?

For centuries, there have been different stories about people who ended up inside these giant animals. According to some of them, these unfortunate individuals even managed to escape from their live jails. Theoretically, an adult blue whale could accommodate not only you but also your friends and family members. At least, all of you would fit in a whale's mouth. But the question remains if this whale could SWALLOW you?

    SUMMARY:
    - The blue whale is the largest animal that lives on our planet. In a vertical position, its height can be compared with that of a 10-story building.
    - Despite being so tremendously huge, the blue whales feed on some of the tiniest marine life form called krill. Just one adult whale can eat 8,000 pounds of these shrimp-like animals a day.
    - But due to such a diet, the esophagus of the blue whale is incredibly thin for such a massive animal: just several inches across. Thus, if you ended up in a blue whale's mouth, the animal wouldn't be able to swallow you.
    - Although the sperm whale isn't as big as the blue whale, its size is still impressive. Males can reach a length of 60 feet, and females can grow about 40 feet long.
    - Sperm whales can open their mouths really widely. But even the largest representatives of this species have a relatively narrow throat opening. That's why if a sperm whale swallowed you, you would hardly fit in its esophagus.
    - Trying to crawl out of a whale's esophagus can be compared with attempting to get out of a tight, wet, and slimy sleeping bag made of foam rubber.
    - Digestive enzymes, including hydrochloric acid, are incredibly concentrated in the stomach of the whale. That's why if this gastric juice got on the human skin, this would cause severe chemical burns and a person wouldn't survive the shock.
    - But don't forget that even if you somehow managed to stay alive after these burns, you would still be in a stomach chamber. In total, whales have four of them. It would become the end of the journey for you.

  • 12 Most Dangerous Enemies of the Megalodon

    12:15

If there were poster critters for prehistoric monsters, Megalodon would rank high on the list. Along with T-Rex, here's a beast that has captured our imaginations … and tends to prove that size matters. Experts say this animal would have measured at least 60 feet long (18 m) and weighed around 65 tons (59k kg). Since they existed between 23 million to about 2.5 million years ago, many of the creatures on our list didn’t co-exist with the ancient sharks. But it’s still interesting to speculate what might have happened had they crossed paths. So, from the mighty mosasaurus to the legendary Leviathan, Here are 12 of the most potential dangerous enemies of the Megalodon!

    #9 Dunkleosteus
At 20 feet long (6 m) long armored, and weighing over a ton, (907 kg) this monster fish would have caught YOU, not the other way around. And bear in mind some sources claim the animal was even bigger. Dunkleosteus lived around 360 million years ago … and was considered to be a hypercarnivorous apex predator. So it was at the top of the food chain and had a diet in excess of 70% meat. But the animal didn’t have teeth. Two pair of plates in its mouth formed a beaklike structure, which could exert a powerful bite force … by some estimates, it could exert some 8,000 pounds (3.6 metric tons) per square inch of pressure on its victims. Compared to Megalodon, it’s a smallish beast. But a school of these animals attacking with such a lethal bite force might have been enough to severely damage a big brute like Megalodon.

    #8 Tylosaurus
Here’s a large, quick and agile marine lizard that is a species of Mosasaur. They could reach lengths of nearly 50 feet (15 m) … and were recognized for their long, cylindrical snouts. The snout may have served purposes of self defense, or for use in combat and stunning their prey. Maybe their tactic of using their long, eel-like bodies to suddenly shoot forward and overtake their prey would have posed a dilemma for Megalodon … after all experts say these animals had a taste for everything from birds, to marine reptiles, to sharks. And some 75 million years ago, they would have been one the most dominant predators found in the waters.

    #7 Cretoxyrhina (krih-TOX-ee-RIE-nah)
Here's a scary prehistoric shark that is NOT named Megalodon. Although it predated the larger fish by millions of years, this critter doesn't have quite the brand awareness. But while it was smaller, this beast seemed to be no less fearsome. Measuring up to 30 feet long (9 m) it had a mouth full of knife-like teeth. In fact, those teeth resemble the utensils so much that it’s been nicknamed the Ginsu Shark … a reference to the Ginsu knives that were featured in late night TV commercials cutting through metal cans. This animal’s teeth had a thick coating of enamel that allowed it to slice through shell or bones as easily as flesh. In its time during the Late Cretaceous, it was one of the deadliest predators in the water.

    #6 Sarcosuchus Imperator (sark-os-suh-kus Imp-er-AY-tor) …
This monster did resemble (and is related to) the modern day crocodile … and is one of the largest such reptiles that ever lived. It inhabited what is now South America and Africa around 112 million years ago … and its remains were first found in the Sahara. This prehistoric beast could weigh some 8 tons (more than 7200 kg), and measure 39 feet long (about 12 m) -- about the size of a truck! Given its size, the animal likely preyed upon the dinosaurs of its time. This one is a stretch since crocs and sharks don't typically cross paths. But it has been known to happen. Could Megalodon have been taken out by this reptilian monster?

    #5 Mosasaurus (moss-uh-sore-us)
This beast lived during the Late Cretaceous, around 66 million years ago ... and it could have given Megalodon some trouble. Mosasaurus measured some 60 feet long (18 m) but gave up some weight at an estimated 30,000 pounds. (more than 16,000 kg) They were able to take on prey from dinosaurs to sharks that it co-existed with. Huge, conical teeth would clamp into prey to take them down. Their fossils have been found worldwide … but they fame has become even more far reaching, thanks to the Jurassic World movies. Did you know that these fearsome, carnivorous marine lizards are thought to be ancestors of today's Komodo dragon?

Livyatan is an extinct genus of sperm whale containing one species: L. melvillei. The genus name was inspired by the biblical sea monster Leviathan, and the species name by Herman Melville, the author of the famous book Moby-Dick about an albino bull sperm whale. It was found in the Pisco Formation of Peru and lived during the Tortonian stage of the Miocene epoch, about 9.9–8.9 million years ago
