60 Mind-Blowing Space Facts That Might Scare You And Amaze at the Same Time

  • 60+ Mind-Blowing Space Facts That Might Scare You And Amaze at the Same Time

We think we know everything about the place we live in: we might know our neighbors, the owner of the closest supermarket, the guy who always walks his dog in the nearest park. How about the bigger place we live in - our planet Earth, or even bigger - our Galaxy? Do you know what's going on right above our heads, in outer Space?

Some of the object in Space constantly bump into each other, like meteors and planets, or comets and stars, or even two black holes. Black holes collisions are so powerful that they send gravitational waves all across cosmos. Some of the fine-tuned detectors here on Earth even allow us to hear the sound from those collisions. I wonder, what it sounds like!

Space, the final frontier. There is still very little that we actually understand about the vast universe that we live in. However, what we do know is that space is very clearly trying its best to kill us all. From deadly radiation to exploding super-stars, the galaxy is dangerous enough to make even the bravest (or craziest) astronauts think twice before deciding to exit our nice, protective atmosphere. Still, the human race is determined to go out and explore the cosmos, so just to make sure we know exactly what we're getting into, here are 25 Space Facts That Will Both Terrify And Amaze You.

  • 50+ Facts About Space Will Scare and Amaze You

At the center o nearly every galaxy there's a monstruous place, called Black Hole. The pull of gravity there is so strong that even light can't escape it! This is what makes them so hard to see and pretty active...

And what would happen if a black hole meets a star? Would a star survive such an encounter? The energy released as the black hole eats up stellar material is huge... Moreover, black holes can attract not only stars and planets, but also other black holes! They eventually merge and become one - of a much greater mass! Wow! Space is a never-ending journey of discovery!

Outer space is really big! And probably there's no way we can get to know it well enough. However, there's always a chance to learn more about it. As we find out various facts about planets, stars and galaxies, we realize how tiny we are. And some of these facts may be really fascinating!

For example, did you know that there're pretty scary planets out there? For example, TrEs-9B is a planet where there's always night. Just imagine not to be able to see the sun... ever! Another terrifying planet is HD 189733 b. It looks pretty: with wonderful patterns on its surface. But it's not as simple as it seems: it rains glass there!

Can you imagine looking at the night sky and not seeing the Moon up there? Instead, you'd see a huge red circle! What if Mars orbited the Earth? Then we'd sing fly me to Mars or wonder what's hidden in the far side of Mars.

Mars is about double the size of the Moon, so it would appear twice as big in the sky! It would be a fantastic view, for sure. But what would come with it? Tsunamis, huge monster waves in the ocean, earthquakes? Let's find out how space bodies influence our lives here on Earth.

  • 18 Sea Monsters That Are More Terrifying Than Megalodon

The megalodon was one of the largest predators that's ever lived on our planet. These sharks' length could probably reach 60 to 80 ft. And their maximum weight was more than 50 tons. That's the combined weight of 10 African elephants! The modern sperm whale grows as long as the megalodon was or even longer. But the prehistoric shark used to be heavier. The great white shark's maximum length is just 20 feet. The largest specimens grow to be two and a half tons. Which means the megalodon was more than 20 times heavier and 3 times longer than the great white!

The Meg had terrifying serrated teeth - they're still found all over the world in impressive quantities. The largest of them were three times longer than the great white shark's teeth. And if you placed this tooth on your palm, it would cover it whole. Ancient people believed the megalodon’s teeth were huge serpents' tongues. They even called these teeth tongue stones. It seems there can't be an animal more terrifying than the ginormous shark. But you might be in for a surprise. Tons of incredible and really bizarre creatures live in the depths of the Mariana Trench! So, check out our new compilation of the strangest animals in the world!

Our good old Solar System is actually a pretty bizarre place, what with all its out-of-this-world phenomena that we humans haven't managed to explain yet! There are rumors that a gigantic, undiscovered planet is hiding behind Neptune, volcanoes on Pluto spew ice, and a colossal canyon on Mars can accommodate the whole US territory, and most of Cleveland!

Have you ever heard that winds on Venus blow 50 times faster than the planet rotates? Or that there's an ocean that consists of metallic hydrogen, and its depth is a staggering 25,000 miles, which is almost the same as the circumference of the Earth? Well, let's figure out if it's true by talking about the most mystifying Solar System facts.

    - The Solar System is 4.6 billion years old! So old, it’s a Senior Solar System.
    - Wanna get away? You'll have to travel 11 billion miles away from Earth before even leaving the Solar System.
    - The Planet Uranus or Uranus – you can’t win either way -- rotates on its side, and astronomers have no idea why the planet has chosen such an unusual position.
    - Our Sun is insanely massive! Want some proof? Well, 99.86% of all the mass in the Solar System is the mass of the Sun - in particular, the hydrogen and helium it's made of.
    - Earth might not be the only tectonically active planet in the Solar System. Astronomers have spotted some landforms looking like cliffs on Mercury!
    - Behind the orbit of Neptune, lies the mysterious Kuiper Belt, filled with massive icy objects. The most curious thing about this space formation, though, is that scientists can’t explain the pattern of its movement.
    - While we have volcanoes spilling lava on our planet, the volcanoes on Pluto spit... ice!
    - One of Saturn's moons, Lapetus, has a unique color - it's two-toned. One of its hemispheres is light, and the other is eerily dark.
    - The Sun's atmosphere stretches far beyond its visible surface. And our planet is right within its reach.
    - The Sun's atmosphere is hotter than the surface of the star. While on the surface, the temperatures reach 10,000 degrees F, the upper atmosphere heats up to millions of degrees!
    - Our Solar System isn't the only one in the Milky Way Galaxy. Far from it, the galaxy we live in houses about 100 billion solar systems!
    - Since Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, many people simply assume that it's also the hottest. And that's where they get it wrong because, in fact, Venus (which is about 30 million miles further from the Sun than Mercury) is way hotter!
    - The most enormous volcano in the whole Solar System (at least, that we know of) is on Mars!
    - The valley called Valles Marineris, on Mars, is more than 10 times larger than Earth's Grand Canyon.
    - On the surface of Jupiter, there’s a weird region that's called the Great Red Spot. Recently, astronomers have concluded that this spot is actually a storm that’s been raging on the planet for centuries.

  • They Found Something on Saturns Moon, and It Could Mean Life

Look up, find that little yellow dot…That's Titan. It’s Saturn’s largest moon, and the second largest moon in our whole solar system. And it might be the only place in our solar system where there’s liquid water… besides Earth. Titan is a bit bigger than our moon and a whole lot heavier. The surface is mostly made up of ice, it has small mountains, craters, and a few cryo-volcanoes. But many experts believe there's a whole ocean under the surface of Titan!

Scientists have actually found real evidence that Titan might already have life on it. The planet shot to the top of the list of places we could one day live on, sorry Mars. NASA has a new project, the Dragonfly mission. They’re gonna send a drone out there, and explore Titan even more. The mission’s still about 6 years away, and the rocket will reach Saturn's moon 9 years after that, so we’re going to have to wait a while before we pack up and move to Titan. So in the meantime, let's find out more about this amazing celestial body!

  • Journey to the Black Holes Center

The nearest black hole is 1,011 light-years away. This black pearl was found in the solar system HR 6819. It was hidden in orbit with two other stars, which you can see with the human eye. Scientists have been studying this system since the 80s, but this winter, it revealed its main secret. This particular black hole is considered relatively small. But despite this, its mass is four times bigger than our Sun, and it’s 2,500 light-years closer to Earth than the next nearest black hole.

If we were to make a model where the Earth’s distance to the Sun was only .05 inches, you would have to travel about 4 miles to get to this black hole. But our galaxy, the Milky Way, is about 100,000 light-years wide. So the distance of 1,011 light-years doesn’t seem that long in comparison. But before you jump inside this black giant, you should understand that a journey to such a dangerous object as a black hole is a one-way ticket...

  • What Would Happen If the Titanic Met the Kraken?

How large was the iceberg that sank the Titanic? Months before the disaster struck, a ginormous chunk of ice had broken away from a glacier in southwest Greenland. It was made of the snow that had fallen about 100,000 years ago - when mammoths were still roaming the planet. And when the iceberg just started its journey, it was a huge thing. Almost 1,700 ft (518 m) long, it also weighed 75 million tons!

Even after melting into the water for months, the iceberg still weighed an impressive one and a half million tons. Its top part was towering over the water for almost 100 ft (30m). But what people saw was just a tiny part of a jumbo piece of ice. The largest part of any iceberg is hidden under the surface, with a mere one-tenth visible above the water. The Titanic iceberg wasn't an exception. The moment the ship collided with it, the vessel was doomed. But what if what we know about the disaster is not true? What if it had been the Kraken that sank the Titanic? A legendary creature feared by everyone who sets off on a sea voyage...

  • What If Today Never Ends

Normally, our planet makes a rotation every 24 hours at a speed of 1040 mph. This is faster than the speed of sound and several times faster than the fastest cars in the world. But what if the Earth stopped spinning? Imagine that our planet's rotation stops one day and tomorrow never comes. Life will never be the same. But if you can escape to an underground bunker, you may have a chance to carry on.

So, you close the hatch, go deep underground, and hear the chaos that has begun on the surface. All the people, houses, cars, ships, roads, trees, animals, topsoil, anything not connected to bedrock, will fly off to the East. Hurricanes and tsunamis will appear. The endless today brings huge, global earthquakes. And volcanoes will awaken and erupt, threatening to destroy everything. Two days later, you realize that silence has come to the surface...

  • What If Earths Core Turned to Ice

Imagine there’s a huge hot ball hidden inside the Earth. It's floating in an ocean of molten metal. This ball also spins on its axis, but it moves faster than the rest of our planet. This is what the Earth's core looks like. The solid metal ball is the inner core, and it’s 750 miles thick. The outer core is the molten ocean. To reach the edge of it, you would need to dig a tunnel into the Earth that was about 3,700 miles long.

But you would hardly want to go there, because it’s the hottest point on the planet. The core temperature is 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Humans have learned to use the heat coming from inside the Earth as a source of energy. If the core ever cooled down and that heat disappeared, this kind of electricity might become very expensive. Phones, computers, the Internet – all these things would cost a lot more. But this would actually be the least of our worries... So what would happen if the Earth's core went cold?

Massive sauropods peacefully chew on flowering plants and trees, their young ones following closely by their side. But what is that bright spot in the sky? It grows bigger, brighter. This is the asteroid! Little do the great reptiles know: today marks the beginning of one of the largest mass extinction events in Earth’s history – ¾ of life on our planet will be wiped out...

So what happened after the asteroid hit the Earth 66 years ago? The cosmic monster falling toward the Earth was the size of Mount Everest. At least 6 miles wide and weighing 460 trillion tons, the meteor was coming in hot…and fast. 12 miles per second, heading right for the Yucatan Peninsula in present-day Mexico. At that speed, it could travel from LA to New York in under 4 minutes!

  • The Takeoff of Worlds Largest Aircraft That Will Blow Your Mind!

Aviation has come a long way since 1903, when the Wright Brothers' Flyer-1 aircraft first took to the skies. Flying machines have set incredible records one after the other. The first flight stayed up for just 12 seconds and flew 120 feet. But this was a true revolution!

Today’s aircrafts have by far higher performance. For example, the Bombardier Global 7500 has a range of 7,700 nautical miles, while the Lockheed SR-71A can reach speeds of 2,193 miles per hour. But we have an aviation record holder. It has broken about 240 staggering world records!
This air titan doesn't take off, rather it pushes the ground away. It's not an airplane, but the Dream!

  • 16 World Records You Can Break Any Minute

Hey guys! What about breaking a record? You probably think that Guinness World Records are something only a chosen few can do. But what if I told you that there are records you can break at literally any moment without leaving your home? On top of that, some of them don't need any specialized training!

For example, in 2010, the citizens and students of Ordos City, China, created the longest human domino line. It was 4.47 miles long and consisted of 10,267 people. It's hard to believe, but the participants spent 69 minutes and 43 seconds completing this unusual domino line! Are you ready to challenge yourself and do something like that?

    - It seems that a cup percussion ensemble is a pretty fantastic thing. Such a performance in Xi'an, China, earned a Guinness World Record on May 21, 2017. 2,398 people gathered together and performed the song Pursuing.
    - Have you ever entertained yourself by blowing peas? Then you have a chance of breaking the record of Coby Cotton from the US. He managed to blow a pea 26.24 ft. This amazing event took place on February 13, 2018.
    - Silvio Sabba from Italy set a curious (and probably pretty painful!) world record on December 27, 2012. On this day, he clipped 51 clothes pegs to his face. It took him just one minute.
    - Silvana Shamuon from Waterloo, Canada, became a famous record holder after she kicked 59 items off people's heads in one minute in 2016. Since then, nobody has been able to break her record.
    - If you know how to keep your balance and you're on friendly terms with tennis balls, you can try to break another record of Silvio Sabba, the guy I've already mentioned. The Italian managed to hold a whopping 26 tennis balls in just one hand!
    - The employees of the company made the longest line of sticky notes. In one line, there were 114,741 pieces collected from all over India. The length of the line was 5.18 miles!
    - If you have a lot of space at hand and some moonwalking skills, you have everything you need to beat the next world record. The longest distance a person moonwalked in an hour is 3.54 miles.
    - Ross McCurdy from the US cracked 32 eggs with one hand. So far, this has been the largest number of eggs cracked within one minute.
    - Do you want your windows to be always clean? Then start training to break the world record for the quickest window cleaning! The current record is pretty impressive: 3 office windows in just 9.14 seconds! Nobody has been able to achieve better results since 2009.
    - The fastest time recorded for a person drinking 16.9 oz of water was 1.75 seconds. It happened in London during the XFM Breakfast Show in 2014.
    - Just how much time do you spend in the shower? The less, the better — at least if you want to break the world record for the shortest shower ever taken. The current record is 33.18 seconds.

  • The Worst Part Of Pompeiis Destruction Isnt What You Think

You might be forgiven for thinking that the most disturbing part of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. was the sheer suddenness of Pompeii’s destruction. But while the town’s destruction was unspeakably tragic, the speed at which it happened wasn’t nearly the worst thing about it.

Two festivals happening in the town at the same time meant the tragedy at Pompeii ended up so much worse than it should have been. According to the book Pompeii: An Archaeological Guide, the Pompeians were in the middle of a multi-day celebration in honor of the emperor Augustus. Known today as the first emperor of the Roman Empire, Augustus had passed 65 years earlier and had just been made a god — as well as having the month of August named after him. Pompeii’s streets were filled with public celebrations including street musicians, fortune tellers, plays, and athletic events. Many of those performers and athletes came from outside Pompeii to take part in the event, as did the visitors and tourists who came to see them. We can't know exactly how many extra people were in the town at the time of its destruction, but it is certainly a lot more lives were lost than might have happened if the eruption had happened a month later.

Even worse, the day before the eruption was Vulcanalia, the festival of the god Vulcan — otherwise known as the god of fire and volcanoes. It wasn't so much that the people of Pompeii didn't get a warning that Mount Vesuvius was going to erupt, because there definitely would have been smoke, small earthquakes, and loud rumblings at the very least. It was more that, because of Vulcanalia, they would have interpreted these signs as good omens from the god rather than warnings to get out of Dodge. As far as the townspeople cared, these warnings were simply signs that Vulcan was busy at his forge inside Mount Vesuvius, perfectly happy that everyone was celebrating his special day.

Watch the video to lean why the worst part of Pompeii's destruction isn't what you think.

  • 24 Planets Even Better for Life Than Earth

How many habitable planets are there? Water is the basis of life in any part of the universe. So potentially inhabited planets must have liquid water on them to support life. An incredible number of circumstances must come together for this. The planet must be in the habitable zone of the star. A little closer to the star, and the water will evaporate, leaving no chance for oceans and seas to form. This is what happened on Venus. Too far from the star, and the planet becomes too cold. Water can only exist in the form of ice on the surface and there just might be liquid water deep below. Neptune is one example of this.

In our galaxy alone, there are countless stars. Really you can’t count on them. Near each of them may be a planet. They are called exoplanets. And some of them may be in the habitable zone and have everything for life to form on them. From a list of 4,500 known exoplanets, scientists have identified 24 that can be superhabitable. This is the type of planet that is suitable for the existence and evolution of life even more than the Earth!

  • Breathtakingly Beautiful Space Phenomena

Outer space is full of rare things and phenomena that will always impress people. And astronomers turn up new surprises every day. Nuclear pasta, moon-moons, nebulas that resemble butterflies, and a star that looks eerily similar to the Eye of Sauron. There are a lot of strange objects in space. Have you ever heard of a planet where it rains glass or an ice planet that's burning?

Did you know that there are mini black holes? (Unlike their massive siblings, hypothetical mini black holes could be really tiny - not bigger than an atom). Or that about 4,000 light-years away from Earth, there's a planet that seems to be one enormous diamond? The planet is denser than any other discovered so far and consists mostly of carbon. Interested? Let's take a journey to the most amazing and bizarre places found in space!

    What is dark matter?
Dark matter is an invisible mass that emits no light, it makes up about 27% of the universe and there isn't any direct evidence for its existence. However scientists infer its presence based on the gravitational pull it exerts on regular matter. Many scientists believe dark matter is comprised of weakly interacting massive particles, which could be up to 100 times more massive than a proton, but doesn’t readily interact with the baryonic matter our instruments were designed to detect. Although dark matter was theorised 60 years ago, scientists are much more certain on what dark matter is not, than what it actually is.
    Where is all the life?
The observable universe is a massive 93 billion light years in diameter and it is filled with billions of galaxy's, that are made up of billions of stars and planets. So why is the only evidence of life, right here on Earth when statistically other life forms though out the universe should be common. According to the Fermi paradox the earth should of already have been visited by extraterrestrial aliens, though there is no proven evidence of this, nor any signs of aliens anywhere in the observable universe so far, leading to the question. Where is everybody? Is Earth the only planet with life?
Why is the suns corona so hot ?
The suns surface is around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, but it's atmosphere, known as the the corona is millions of degrees Fahrenheit hotter and it gets hotter the further away you go!
Solar physicists have been puzzled by how the sun reheats its corona, but research points to a link between energy beneath the visible surface, and processes in the sun's magnetic field.
But, currently the actual details as to why the temperature is so much higher in the corona than on the surface is still a mystery.
    Why do stars explode?
The largest explosions that take place in space, are supernovas. This is when a massive star run outs of fuel and ends its life in a gigantic explosion. These spectacular blasts are so bright they can briefly outshine entire galaxies. Although extensive research has been done to detail how supernovas work, there are still mysteries on how the star explodes.
Scientists are keen to understand the mechanics of these stellar blasts, including what happens inside a star before it ignites as a supernova.
    What is dark energy?
Much like dark matter, scientists are much more certain on what dark energy is not, than what it actually is. However, scientists do know that the universe is roughly 68% dark energy and that it might be the cause of a faster expansion rate within the universe, pulling galaxy's apart. Dark energy however, has many possibilities, from just a property of space to a new dynamic fluid. What ever this enigmatic force is, it has yet to be directly detected. Posing the question, what is dark energy?
