  • 7 Islands No One Wants to Buy Even for $1

    10:01

Do you ever you dream to own a private island? If you do, you'll probably find this information useful. Have you ever heard that there are whole islands out there that you can purchase for a fraction of the typical price? But the real kicker is that nobody wants to buy them! And there're reasons for that.

Have you ever heard, for example, about Japan's Rabbit Island? They began to thrive and multiply on the island after a chemical weapons plant was closed. And these days, thousands of friendly bunnies will greet you if you decide to pay them a visit!

    SUMMARY:
    - For just 80,000 bucks, you can become the owner of not one but six islands situated on Brazil’s Sao Francisco River. But you’ll be subject to small annual taxes.
    - Although Little Rocky Island lies in the Atlantic Ocean, neighboring islands protect it from foul weather. There’s no property on the island, but you can build anything you like there!
    - Also known as Terrible Tilly, this island’s nickname speaks for itself. Well, it’s not technically an island in the traditional sense, it’s basically a rock with a single lighthouse on it off the coast of Oregon.
    - If you have an extra 40K, you can buy a 1-acre island with a view of picturesque Maine. There’s a little cabin on the island, and you can theoretically build some other property there too if you want.
    - You could become the owner of a historic private island on one condition: you have to restore the fort situated on it.
    - People typically associate private islands with some sort of tropical paradise. But Canada’s McGibbon Island is nothing like that. Perhaps that explains the super low price tag of 30 grand.
    - Welcome to a tiny island off the coast of Tasmania, Australia. This offer is open only for couples, and both partners should be equally eager to go to the island.
    - Ōkunoshima Island lies approximately 2 miles off the coast of Japan. From 1929 to 1945, there was a chemical weapons plant on the island that produced poisonous gas.
    - Dubbed Battleship Island because it looks like an old half-destroyed battleship, Hashima is located about 9 miles away from Nagasaki. From 1887 to 1974, there was a profitable coal mine on the island.
    - Located in Venice, Italy, Lazzaretto Nuovo is also open for tourists but home to nobody. In 1468, the island became a quarantine area for ships that approached the city. This move was meant to protect Venice from the plague.
    - Jaco Island belongs to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. This island looks like the picture of true paradise: lush green trees, crystal blue waters, and white sand. But his place is uninhabitable.

  • A House for $1 That No One Wants to Buy

    10:05

Some people dream of having a small, cozy house, and others dream of living in a huge mansion near the sea. Actually, it’s not that hard to make this dream come true because some houses are sold for just $1. But, as you can imagine, there’s a catch. They’re either impossible to renovate, in bad neighborhoods…or even worse. Would you fork up some pocket change for these homes?

    SUMMARY:

    - Victorian Mansion, $329,000

If you move into this home, you’ll never have any alone time again. No, seriously. According to different ghost shows and past owners, this mansion comes with a beautiful staircase, a charming kitchen…and ghosts!

    - Detroit House, $1,000

Sure, it has the charm of an early 20th-century home. But it needs new electrical wiring, plumbing, and even new wood floors — and those are just a few of the things on the list.

    - New Jersey Mansion, $10

One of the conditions of buying this New Jersey mansion is that you’ll be solely responsible for moving it off the property it currently sits on!

    - Houses in the UK for 1 Euro

While the price of these homes is just 1 euro, buyers are expected to take out a low-interest loan of $35,000 to restore one.

    - Homes in Ollolai, Italy, $1

The city is proud of its history and traditions and wants to do what it can to keep the town from disappearing from existence.

    - A home in San Francisco, $1

Someone has to not only buy the home but move its 2 halves from the city’s property to their own plot of land. Sounds like a lot of work, even for 1 dollar.

  • 8 Lands You Can Claim as Your Own

    8:45

You ever dreamed of becoming a king or president? Seems impossible since every square foot on Earth is already ruled by someone, right? Well, not quite! For example, if you don't mind being surrounded by ducks, you could become the Great Duke of the Lagoan Isles! It's in England.

If you prefer a hotter climate, there's 800 sq miles of unclaimed territory in northern Africa between Egypt and Sudan. But a couple of Russian tourists impressed by Tolkien's books also claimed this land to be Middle-Earth and put a Russian flag there. If you’re a true highlander, then Rockall in the Atlantic Ocean might interest you. By the way, there's something that makes Rockall the most appealing stone on the planet. Interested? So here are some territories that don’t belong to anyone, so they’re up for grabs!

  • A New Continent Is Discovered on Earth In the Pacific Ocean

    10:32

How to Stop Water Polution. In case you're wondering what water polution has to do with a new continent discoevered in the Pacific Ocean, here's the answer to this mystery. This new continent is an island that consists solely of garbage and plastic waste. Some countries are ready to announce an ecological disaster. Let’s see if there’s something we can all do to save the planet.

    Music: Butchers - Silent Partner

    SUMMARY
-2 million plastic bags a minute are thrown away. As for bubble wrap, the amount produced in just one year would be enough to cover our planet around the equator. 500 billion plastic cups are used and disposed of annually.
-There are 3 huge garbage islands in the world: in the central North Pacific Ocean, in the Indian Ocean, and in the Atlantic Ocean.
-The size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is currently more than 600,000 square miles. According to the journal Scientific Reports, there are more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic that have accumulated in this area.
-Plastic objects in the ocean kill animals or get stuck in their bodies. Some types of plastic are toxic. In addition, plastic has the ability to absorb such poisonous substances as mercury. Birds often choke to death after trying to swallow a bright object that has caught their eye.
-Indonesian authorities have recently declared a “garbage emergency.” More than 100 tons of waste brought ashore every day to beaches from Seminyak and Jimbaran to Kuta.
-To solve the problem, people can find a way to remove the garbage that is already in the ocean. Another way out is to decrease pollution or stop it completely.

  • A Scary Island That Has Been Keeping a Secret for 80 Years

    10:56

Our story begins in the Tasman Sea, the body of water between Australia and New Zealand. It’s exactly here where the Lord Howe Island Group had been lying unperturbed until 1788. That year changed everything in the history of this lost place as British lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball discovered the central island of this group as he was on his way to nearby Norfolk Island. Having fulfilled his mission, Ball was heading home when he decided to claim a newly-uncovered territory for his country. At that time, nobody could’ve imagined the surprises this island would have in store for people decades later!
After Ball’s discovery, permanent settlements had already been established on the main island by 1834. Despite being just 6.2 miles long, Lord Howe Island represented (and still represents) an idyllic picture of a tropical paradise. As for the rest of the islands belonging to this group, they were mostly rocky volcanic landmasses.

Exploring outer space is awesome, but what if there are places right here on Earth that are just as incredible and jaw-dropping? Luckily for you, you live on Planet Earth, a place that holds secrets so wild and baffling that even scientists can’t always explain them!

Have you ever heard about the Boiling River in the Amazon or never-ending light storm? Can you believe that there’s a place on Earth with its own ecosystem and atmosphere, similar to another planet? Maybe you wanna see dancing lights in the sky? Well, the residents of Hessdalen Valley, Norway, can enjoy them every night! The world is full of amazing things, so prepare to be amazed as you learn about 7 of the most unbelievable mysteries and phenomena.

    SUMMARY:
    - What’s interesting about this waterfall is that it has 2 different bodies of falling water. One side has water falling into another body of water, Lake Superior; the other one has water that falls straight into a huge natural hole in the ground. Where does this water lead? No one seems to know!
    - While today we have machines that can help us lift heavy materials to build giant buildings and monuments, back in the days when Stonehenge was built, no one had access to this type of technology.
    - In Hessdalen Valley, brightly colored lights appear in the sky in different colors and shapes. For the last 4 decades (and possibly longer!), this phenomenon has continued to puzzle scientists.
    - Deep in the Amazon rainforests lies a flowing river in the forested region of Mayantuyacu that boasts temperatures so hot that any person or animal that falls into it literally boils alive from the inside out.
    - Movile Cave, located in Southeastern Romania, remained closed in complete darkness for a whopping 5.5 million years! Scientists carved out an opening to the cave and found that a completely sustained ecosystem was thriving inside!
    - Circles of Namibia are almost perfect and range anywhere from 10 to 65 ft in diameter. Many scientists have offered up theories as to why these circles appear instead of other more random shapes.
    - But in Western Venezuela, over the mouth of the Catatumbo River, there’s a lightning storm that seems to be running on Energizer batteries — it just keeps going and going! Once the clock strikes 7 PM, the lightning storm begins and doesn’t relent for another 10 long hours.

    SUMMARY:
    - If you look off the western coast of France, you’ll see the Isle of Rhe. The coolest part about it is what you see just beyond the shore: square waves. This strange wave pattern looks like a giant chess board over the ocean.
    - When two different swells coming from opposite directions meet, it’s known as a cross sea. This is what generates these square waves you see near the Isle of Rhe.
    - Because these two seas have totally different weather conditions, a unique pattern emerges when they collide. They create a riptide that’s stronger than your average wave - way stronger than what you’ve probably experienced at the beach with regular waves.
    - There have been a handful of cases where people got caught in the cross sea, but, thankfully and luckily, they managed to get out safely.
    - These square waves have become somewhat famous over time given that there’s really no other place in the world that boasts a cross sea like this one.
    - The Boiling Lake on the Island of Dominica is one body of water you’ll definitely want to stay away from. From high heat to strong gas emissions, there are plenty of reasons to stay out of The Boiling Lake.
    - You’ll probably want to steer clear of the town of West End on Grand Bahama Island. This deadly beach is known for being one of the most shark-infested beaches in the world.
    - While the south and west coasts of Barbados are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, the east and north beaches have incredibly strong tides that can be quite treacherous.
    - Condado Beach in Puerto Rico is a desirable destination in the city of San Juan. However, the beach’s mighty waves and powerful current make this a very dangerous place to go swimming.

    - #1. The construction looms 186 ft above the water’s surface, and they say that when the weather is bad, you can't see the shore from the middle of the bridge. All things combined, it creates an eerie feeling of being suspended in some kind of nerve-racking limbo.

    - #3. This bridge held the title of the world's highest from 1929, when it was completed, till 2001, when Liuguanghe Bridge in China surpassed it by 19 ft.
    - #4. The tallest bridge in the world seems to be floating over the river Tarn's gorge valley in southern France. The total length of the bridge is 8,070 ft, and its maximum height is a whopping 1,125 ft above the ground!
    - #5. This is one of the longest and oldest teakwood footbridges in the world. Besides, it's probably one of the most photographed as well!
    - #6. The world's longest glass bridge, opened in 2017, hangs over a picturesque canyon in the Hebei province of China. About 1,600 ft long and more than 700 ft high, the bridge is paved with 1,077 glass panels!
    - #7. The walkway isn't particularly long, only 200 ft, but the view that is waiting is breathtaking. Everyone using the pathway has to wear special anti-slip shoe covers.
    - #8. This is the largest rigid-frame bridge in Japan, even though it looks more like a twisted roller coaster for drivers! The structure has incredibly steep inclines on both sides, and at first sight, you may doubt that a regular car is able to climb the bridge.
    - #9. The locals call this construction the drunk bridge. Its length is only 850 ft, but the curve of the bridge that protrudes over the Norwegian Sea plays a funny visual trick on motorists.
-#10. The modern version of the Seven Mile Bridge was completed in 1982, and its construction cost was about $45 million.

  • They Found a City Under the Bermuda Triangle

    10:39

Learning mysteries and conspiracy theory stories can be a lot of fun. The only thing that’s even more fun, is checking the facts and trying to debunk them. And what else has more crazy theories swirling around it than the Bermuda Triangle? Can you guess which ones are true and which are fake?

There are a lot of questions to answer. For example, can ocean whirlpools be guilty of all the disappearances happening in the Bermuda Triangle? What lurks in the depth of Blue Holes? Was there a city on the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle?

    SUMMARY:
-The bottom of the ocean here is inconsistent. Every now and then, the otherwise sandy floor is replaced by giant dark holes. However, the whirlpools mostly appear in the inland Blue Holes, situated on the Island and not in the ocean. Even if a vortex could sink a small boat, it wouldn’t likely be an issue for big ships, let alone airplanes – they’re far above that in every possible meaning.
-The local people of Andros Island, part of the Bahamas, have a legend in their folklore about a giant, vile octopus-like creature named Lusca. Some giant octopuses were seen, and even caught, nearby, though they weren’t nearly as big as the legendary creature.
-The only giant things here are overstatements. There certainly aren’t any glass pyramids. Research showed that underlying ground layers beneath the Bimini Road feature nothing but bedrock, with no possible cavities in it.
-One of these treasure hunters was lucky enough to come across a secret map, made from the orbit of the planet in the 60s, during one of the first flights into outer space. This map reveals lots of shipwreck coordinates in the Caribbean area. One of them wasn’t marked as a shipwreck, but as an “unidentified object”.
-A lot of Bermuda Triangle stories feature reports, allegedly received from missing aircraft and ships. Some enthusiasts of this theory draw a line between it and the experimentations of Joseph Hutchison, who was trying to prove that electromagnetic fields can collide with each other and produce all kinds of disturbances to reality itself.

  • 5 Owners Who Refused to Move Out at Any Price

    9:02

The world around us evolves so fast it sometimes makes our heads spin. You can see this most graphically in big cities. So imagine this: a brand-new mall is gonna be built right where your house is standing, and you've been offered a generous sum of money to relocate. Would you do it? Well, if you’re anything like these property owners, that’d be a big fat “Nah, I’m good, thanks!”

    - #2. Three families downright refused to leave their homes. The construction company had no other choice but to build a massive bypass around the 2 properties. The remaining families were even promised a noise barrier to block out the sound of traffic.
    - #3. The homeowner, Edith Macefield, wasn't about to vacate her home. But the developers decided to build the mall anyway so that it surrounded her house on 3 sides.
    - #4. This home in Chongqing is one of the most famous nail houses in China. Once the area was dug up for construction, their house ended up towering over 55 feet off the surrounding ground!
    - In 1911, Siegel-Cooper Dry Goods Store sold the land for the highest price that had ever been paid for a plot: a whopping 1 million bucks! That’s $868 a square foot!
    - Not far from Bajina Bašta in Serbia, you can find a cute little house perched on a rock right in the middle of the Drina River. It was built by 17-year-old boys. Nowadays, the house has become an incredibly popular tourist destination.
    - The skinniest house in the world is just 3 feet wide at its most narrow point and 5 feet at the widest. The house’s iron frame supports two floors.

If you’ve never toyed around with Google Earth, whether for fun or strictly educational purposes, then you’ve been missing out! There are so many cool and bizarre things you can see from satellite images that you probably wouldn’t catch if you didn’t have a bird’s eye view. For example, you can see graffiti in a volcanic crater in Mexico, the world’s largest logo in Chile, a pond full of hippos in Tanzania, and even Batman’s secret hideout in Japan… Wait, what? SUMMARY:
    - Aircraft no longer in use just get sent to a special storage facility where they’re left until their parts can be salvaged or reused later on. And the airplane graveyard in Tucson, Arizona is by far the largest in the world.
    - Canada’s Victoria Island lies within a lake, and there’s a lake on Victoria Island with another island in it!
    - The Badlands Guardian in Alberta is not human-made. The head of the “Badlands Guardian” is a natural earth formation, or at least scientists say so.
    - The act of cutting white horses out of hills actually has its own specific name: leucippotomy.
    - The last thing you’d expect to see in the yellowish-red landscapes of Utah is a bright blue spot that instantly catches your eye. These are actually potash ponds, and they do look surreal, to say the least.
    - Looking at this place from above, you might start thinking what a giant tsunami it must’ve been to throw such a large ship so far ashore. Worry not, though, it’s just a shopping center in Hong Kong.
    - Chile and Peru are famous for their geoglyphs that date back more than a thousand years. Scientists believe it was a drawing of some deity of that time.
    - What looks like something you’d see in some alien conspiracy documentary is, in fact, just an art installation made in 1997.
    - Chilean Coca Cola marketing experts took 70,000 empty Coke bottles to write the company’s logo in the side of a hill. In fact, it’s part of a bigger trend called “mapvertising” where different companies do similar stuff.
    - There’d been many rumors about the origins and purpose of this huge concrete structure found in the Nevada desert. The most recent theory, though, suggests that there are several of such markings all over the US.
    - The Mirny mine is a one of the largest artificial holes in the world, made to dig out diamonds. Siberia is well-known for its diamond deposits, so it’s only natural that such a huge mine should be excavated here.
    - Google Earth shows every piece of graffiti in this crater in detail, which means you can actually see them all from a bird’s eye view.

    10. Homes in Gary, Indiana ($1)
With people moving to larger cities and away from rural communities, homes and neighborhoods get run down and in urgent need of repair. Local authorities have to come up with creative solutions on how to deal with this, but Gary, Indiana, came up with a radical idea- they would make homes available to buy for only one dollar!

    9. Italian Village Home ($54/month)
If you’ve always wanted to move to Europe amongst the glorious mountains of Italy, then you missed out on a great offer that was made by the village of Bormida in 2017. After population numbers started falling, the mayor wanted to encourage new people to come the area. You don’t want your town to die!! So he started a scheme that made houses very affordable.

    8. Homes in Stoke, UK (£1)
Homes in the UK sell for an average of 180,000 pounds, which is the equivalent to about 230,000 dollars, and are notoriously difficult to purchase for large amounts of people in the country. That’s why, when special offers are made available, there’s huge interest and they go in no time at all.

    7. Czech Castle ($13,000)
If a house is too low-key for you, and you'd rather snap up a castle for a bargain, then there was an offer in 2016 that would have been perfect- in the Czech Republic. It's a country known for its opulent architecture, and this opportunity was amazing. The Libejovice chateau, a stunning mustard-colored Renaissance palace, was put on the market for just 13,000 dollars.

    6. Japanese Home ($0)
According to a report in 2013, there were more than 8 million unoccupied homes across Japan. This is a surprise for a country that's so densely populated, but people tend to live in the cities- leaving some rural areas feeling desolate and abandoned. Still, in Tokyo itself it was estimated that 1 in 10 homes were empty, which is far more than the rates seen in New York or London.

    5. An Italian Castle (0$)
See, you can still have your Italian Villa!! Throughout history, large numbers of castles, farmhouses, and monasteries were built across Italy- but now there's not such an interest in keeping them maintained. It's a shame because they are integral to the character of the landscape, so the authorities came up with a plan to rescue them.

    4. New Jersey Mansion ($10)
As you know, it’s not easy, or necessarily affordable, to buy a mansion in the US, but in 2017 a New Jersey mansion went on sale for…. 10 dollars! Yes you heard that right! Why just $10?? Of course, there are a few catches that went along with it.

    3. Sardinia ($1)
Sardinia is a beautiful island off the coast of Italy. The town of Ollolai is in the mountain region of the island, with views out across the fields, and has plenty of uninhabited houses available! In the past 50 years, the number of people in the town has more than halved and, with an aging population, there are very few births each year.

    2. Mansion in Columbia ($170,000)
If you’ve got a bit more cash, but want a great deal, then this mansion might interest you…. It was on sale for 170,000 dollars! See, amazing mansions aren’t only for the extremely wealthy!! Here you can see this beautiful home that was for sale on Zillow.

    1. Mansion in Indiana ($190,000)
Now on to Muncie, Indiana! This mansion was on sale for 190,000 dollars! While that might sound like a lot at this point, it’s an absolute bargain when you see what it has to offer. With 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms across 6,080 square feet, which includes more than an acre of land, the property has enough room to park 20 cars outside- you know, for all those dinner parties you are going to throw!

Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

  • A Mystical Brooch No One Wants to Even Touch

    9:41

Croesus, the king of Lydia, who reigned for 14 years in the 6th century BCE, was legendary for his wealth. You might wonder what the man did to protect his treasures. Well, rumor has it that he used to put curses on his most valuable belongings, including the infamous King Croesus's golden brooch, one of the most precious items in his jewelry collection.

For hundreds of years, the treasure of King Croesus lay underground, lost but not forgotten. But one day in 1965, several men came across the ancient burial mound of a Lydian princess. The men didn't excavate all the treasure at once. They returned once again in 1968 but didn't find anything but wall paintings. Among the artifacts they’d stolen, there was a beautiful golden brooch in the shape of a winged seahorse...

    SUMMARY:
    - In no time, the men realized that the fabled curse that’d been put on the treasures and, in particular, the brooch, 2,500 years ago, was far more than just a superstition.
    - The thieves got caught by the police after one of their own betrayed his accomplices, unhappy with the way they’d divided the treasure.
    - But being arrested wasn't the only punishment the thieves had to live through for their crimes. One of the thieves lost his three sons under different tragic circumstances.
    - In the 1970s, it was alleged that more than 200 items from King Croesus's treasure had been bought by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art around 1968.
    - After a 6-year legal battle that was rumored to cost Turkey more than $30 million, the museum admitted that while purchasing the artifacts, they’d known that they’d been stolen.
    - In 2006, 13 years after the artifacts had been relocated, it turned out that the famous golden seahorse brooch, which was on display in Turkey's Uşak Museum, was a fake!
    - During the investigation, the museum's director admitted that he’d sold the real brooch, as well as some other artifacts, to cover his gambling debts.
    - If you ever see the 67.5 carat (13 gr - 0.5 oz) Black Orlov Diamond, don't touch it without a pair of gloves on, or at all (better safe than sorry, you know). That thing is as dangerous as it is gorgeous.
    - The name of the 105-carat (21 g - 0.7 oz) Koh-i-Noor Diamond means the mountain of light.
    - Every single man who wore the diamond lost his throne.
    - Colonel W. Ferris did bring the Delhi Purple Sapphire to England, and while he had possession of the gem, his family suffered from countless health and financial problems.
    - The Star of India is the largest known blue sapphire in the world. People talked about curses and spells that protected the sapphire.

  • 11 Places More Mysterious Than Bermuda Triangle

    11:03

It’s one of the most terrifyingly fascinating places on our planet. Ships and planes simply vanish, radios and compasses just stop working, and some even say they’ve spotted UFOs there. And it's not the one and only Bermuda Triangle. There are at least 11 other mysterious places. So what are they, and how do they form?

Ivan T. Sanderson, a writer, a biologist, and a huge fan of the paranormal and inexplicable, traveled a lot and recorded his experiences. What caught his attention the most was where the strangest unexplained things kept happening. That is, disappearing ships and whatnot. He was able to map 12 of these places scattered all over the world. But the weird thing is, 6 of them lie almost perfectly in line above the Equator, and the same goes for the 6 below it...

    TIMESTAMPS:
    The Bermuda Triangle 1:11
    The Algerian Megaliths 2:14
    Mohenjo-Daro 3:02
    The Dragon’s Triangle 3:44
    The Hamakulia Volcano 4:30
    Easter Island 4:59
    The South Atlantic Anomaly 5:44
    Great Zimbabwe 6:20
    The Wharton Basin 6:53
    The Loyalty Islands 7:27
The North and South Poles 8:06

    Theories about these Vile Vortices:
    - Ley lines 8:52
    - Giant puzzle 9:32
    - A lot of geologic activity 10:04

    #mystery #bermudatriangle #brightside

    SUMMARY:
    - Besides the paranormal theories of wormholes to another dimension and gates to the underworld, the Bermuda Triangle is really foggy due to methane gas that sometimes makes it impossible for travelers to see, thus making navigation a little tricky too.
    - The Algerian Megaliths are an architectural anomaly, showing just how advanced these people were for a time when we didn’t have the technology to help us build stable constructions.
    - Mohenjo-Daro in Pakistan goes way back to the Indus Valley Civilization in 2500 BCE. Like in Algeria, this society was, for some reason, surprisingly advanced when it came to building and urban planning.
    - Heading further east along the same northern line, we arrive in Japan, where the Dragon’s Triangle, also called the Devil’s Sea, is located. The most astonishing thing about this Vile Vortex is that there’s an underwater city dubbed Japan’s Atlantis.
    - Located in the Ring of Fire, the next Vile Vortex is the Hamakulia Volcano in Hawaii. Locals treat it with utmost respect as the volcano is believed to have a mysterious power.
    - Now let’s head south of the Equator to one of the most isolated places on this planet: Easter Island in Polynesia. This is where you can find nearly 900 Moai statues created by the Rapa Nui people.
    - The South Atlantic Anomaly is a part of Earth where natural radiation flows out of control.
    - Another impressive megalith, this time in Zimbabwe. It was once home to around 20,000 people… but it’s now a ghost town.
    - Poor Australia has Vile Vortices on both sides. Heading over to the east, there’s the Loyalty Islands. A lot of strange whirlpools were found on this patch of the South Pacific as well as plenty of geologic activity.
    - The North and South Poles are on opposite ends of the planet, but they’ve got two things in common: ice and odd disappearances.

  • The Story of the Hope Diamond Which Ruined Its Owners Lives

    8:32

The gemstone, which is now called the Hope Diamond, was formed deep within the Earth more than 1 billion years ago! It was originally used as one of the decorations of an Indian temple idol. But one day a Hindu priest decided it was far too beautiful and valuable to leave there and plucked it out. He was severely punished, of course, but the Hope Diamond was already out of the temple.

“The King's jewel,” “The blue of France” - these are some nicknames for the most mysterious and seemingly dangerous gem in history. The selected few who were “lucky” enough to possess the famous Hope Diamond died horrific deaths. But in the beginning, nobody could foresee the trouble...

    SUMMARY:
    - Some say that Tavernier stole the diamond from the previous owner, while others are sure he bought it. Rumor also has it that Tavernier had a serious raging fever not long after he got the marvelous Hope Diamond.
    - The Hope Diamond curse got to King Louis XIV as well – he died suffering of gangrene. Moreover, all but one of his children didn't make it passed their childhood, though it wasn't that uncommon those days.
    - Both Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed by guillotine during the French revolution. The Hope Diamond was stolen from the Royal Storehouse shortly after.
    - A couple of years passed and the diamond was suddenly discovered in England. Well how did it get there? Several sources confirmed that it was actually owned by King George IV of the United Kingdom.
    - Evalyn Walsh McLean absolutely adored the Hope Diamond and wore it almost every single day. But the happiness didn't last long. First, Evalyn's mother-in-law died. Then her 9-year-old son was in a car accident, and didn’t make it. This broke her and her husband so much that he actually left for another woman and later died in a mental hospital.
    - Now the Hope Diamond weighs a little bit over 45 carats, still has its deep greyish-blue color, and even produces a dangerous red glow if you decide to expose it to short-wave ultraviolet light.
    - Despite the diamond's rich history, there are still heated debates as to whether it's actually cursed or not. Some people are sure that all the legends about the jewel's cursed origins were simply created to boost its popularity.
    - In 1911, the New York Times came out with a whole list of the diamond's supposed “victims.” The list consisted of about 14 people who died tragic deaths not long after possessing or even holding the Hope Diamond.

  • A Man Buys a Photo for $2 and Finds Out Its Worth Millions

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. But sometimes words aren’t the only currency to measure its value. Some pictures cost millions of dollars, and a photo of Billy the Kid found in a thrift store is a good example of that.

Billy the Kid was a legend of the Wild West. He only lived for 21 years, but even in that short time, this young man managed to become one of the most famous outlaws of his era. Interestingly, he never robbed banks, trains, or stagecoaches, but was rustling cattle and took part in gunfights. Even when he was captured, he managed to design a daring jailbreak. Pictures of him are so rare, those fans are ready to pay millions for them. Actually, there was just one officially confirmed picture of him by 2011.

    SUMMARY:
    - Back in 2010, a collector from Fremont, California, bought the picture and two other photographs for $2. The picture showed a group of men playing croquet. At the time he purchased it, the lucky collector had no idea it was a rare image of Billy the Kid himself from 1878.
    - Pictures of Billy the Kid are so rare, quite a lot of people who know the value try to make money by making look-alikes.
    - The executive director of the National Geographic documentary about the picture called it the holy grail, not only of the Wild West, but photography in general, and “the rarest photograph in the world”.
    - Another officially confirmed photo of Billy the Kid sold at Auction for $2.3 million in 2011. Collectors and Wild West fans arrived in Denver, ready to fight for the gem.
    - The third picture of Billy the Kid that has become famous worldwide hasn’t been auctioned yet. But if it is, it’ll be worth even more than $5 million!
    - It supposedly shows both Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett, who ended the famous outlaw’s life at the age of 21.
    - The picture was sold at a flea market in Asheville for $10 in 2011.
    - A forensics expert who studied the picture using facial recognition software confirmed it must have been Garrett and the Kid.
    - Experts are positive if he decides to sell it at auction he could get way more than $5 million for this gem! However, the lucky owner says as of now, he doesn’t want to find out.

  • Who Lives in the Loneliest Place on Earth

    8:30

What's the most isolated spot on Earth? Have you ever heard about Point Nemo? It's the most remote place on our planet. The name says it all — “Nemo” means “no one” in Latin. This loneliest of lonely spots is more than 1,600 miles from any coast. Below: tens of thousands of feet of oceanic depths. Above: endless skies.

A place that occupies 10% of the world’s oceans. A place that’s called a “desert” because of the almost complete absence of life. So if you're tired of your problems and want to run away from all the nervous hassle, Point Nemo is exactly what you need! But don’t expect too much solitude because somebody’s already living there...

  • Top 7 Mistakes youre most likely to make as a new pilot.

    5:32

    Season 3, Episode 6

I've always felt that YouTube pilots give the whole community an unrealistically good impression. That's great, because anybody watching is likely to hold themselves to our high standards, but I think it's equally as important to know that not everyone has the same standards. Although you should always do your best to be the best pilot you can be, it's ok to make mistakes, and that's often how we learn. These are just a few of the silly things, and some not so silly things, that will likely happen to you in your first 250hrs of flying.

Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

  • 9 Things Children See Differently Than We Do

    11:06

Kids are amazing. Their vivid imagination and creativity multiplied by their seemingly endless energy resource are things that rarely get carried on to adulthood. Kids don’t have enough experience and knowledge to understand how this world operates, which is why they see things in a different light.

It has been proven that a child’s worldview settles by the time they turn 11 years old, and they become capable of evaluating the world as an adult, solve problems and even make plans for future. Before this age, children perceive the world differently than adults do. Scientists have found out that kids perceive the world differently than adults do. And here’s how exactly!

If they don’t see it, it doesn’t exist 7:39
They don’t know things can be reversed 8:28
Their understanding of morals differs from ours 9:22

    #kids #children #brightside

    SUMMARY:
    - Numerous experiments have shown that little kids easily believe in supernatural things. But they’re not so naïve as you may think! For example, at as early as the age of 3, they already know when other people really do something from when they pretend and can tell an imaginary thing from a real one.
    - Scientists distinguish two stages of development: the one before you turn 11 and the one after. The difference between them is that kids under 11 years old still can’t think in an abstract manner, while those older than 11 already can.
    - In addition to seeing the world differently in their mind’s eye, kids quite literally have altered vision. Well, not really kids but newborn babies. When they first open their eyes, everything around them is unfocused and blurred, and they can’t distinguish the faces in front of them.
    - There’s a certain device in the children’s brain that allows them to learn new languages much faster than adults. He calls it “language acquisition device,” or LAD.
    - Until a certain age, children don’t realize that not everyone thinks the same way as they do and know things they know.
    - Children under the age of one are unable to realize that something they don’t see still exists. In fact, when they stop seeing an object, for them it disappears forever.
    - If something’s done, it can’t be undone. That’s how little kids think, and it concerns virtually everything. If you show a three-year-old that a shoelace can be tied, they’ll think it’s tied forever and may well start crying when they can’t get the shoe off.
    - Moral judgment is not something kids have the innate ability to understand. They learn morals from experience, and while they’re still very small, they don’t know such a thing even exists.

  • A Plane Lost One Wing So a Pilot Decided to Do This

    9:15

It was a regular training day for the Israeli Air Force. Several combat jets were up in the air, simulating an aerial fight. One of those jets was an F-15 Eagle that already had some history and even got a nickname — Markia Schakim, which means “Sky Blazer” in Hebrew.

Piloting the jet was a new member of the Air Force, Zivi Nedivi, and behind him sat his instructor and navigator, Yehoar Gal, an experienced pilot himself. The training exercise they were performing wasn’t anything out of the ordinary drill: two F-15s were to get away from four A-4 Skyhawks in the open sky over the desert. If everything went according to plan and instructions, no danger would come to any pilots or aircraft. At least that’s what everyone believed...

    SUMMARY:
    - Nedivi, being a member of the outnumbered team, wove through the skies, dodging enemy attacks and looking out for an opening to issue his own. It was an impressive sight, and the young pilot was doing spectacularly well.
    - One of the Skyhawk pilots saw an opportunity to attack an Eagle with a missile and tried to zero in on his target. What he didn’t see was that the other F-15, piloted by Nedivi, was right above him.
    - At this point, both the pilot and his instructor should have ejected, leaving the aircraft to fall but saving their lives. Neither did, though.
    - The jet had lost control and was going down at a 30-degree angle to the ground, making crazy twists and spirals.
    - The pilot and his instructor had very bad visuals and, looking around them, they couldn’t see that their right wing was torn at the root.
    - Nedivi really managed to get the controls back and leveled the jet. It was now time to wholly evaluate the situation and the condition of the Eagle.
    - As he approached the airfield, Nedivi requested the ground crew to deploy the safety net and catch the F-15 if necessary.
    - The eyewitnesses say they didn’t believe what they were seeing: a one-winged fighter Eagle was speeding like a bullet along the landing strip, its tail hook torn out by the sheer force of the tug… and then it miraculously stopped just 35 ft before the safety net.
    - Its fuselage, the remaining wing, and the stabilizers at the rear helped the Eagle generate lift and stay under control.
    - The amazing Eagle was fully repaired afterwards and served in the Air Force for several more years.
    - As for the pilot, Zivi Nadivi, he remained in the Air Force too, of course. And his story after the incident is a bit amusing: first, he was demoted for disobeying orders from his instructor; and then he was immediately promoted for landing the aircraft and thus saving it.

  • 10 Unique Places Where Gravity Is Zero

    10:20

Planet Earth lives by the laws of gravity discovered by Sir Isaac Newton. Gravity is constant. It's something entirely unshakeable that we can always rely on in this ever-changing world, right? Umm, not really. In fact, it’s not as honest and clear as you think.

There are gravitational anomalies in some places where gravity behaves like it’s gone crazy. In such places this law can’t be applied: there, a car can go uphill with its engine off, a waterfall doesn’t fall, and a very heavy boulder can sit on top of a rock at a very strange angle without tumbling down.

    SUMMARY:
    - There’s a stretch of road in India that’s been attracting tourists from all over the world. If you stop your car on the Magnetic Hill going up the slope and put it on neutral, it’ll start crawling upwards, eventually reaching the speed of up to 12 mph.
    - Near the village of Nowe Czarnowo, there’s a forest, in the depth of which you can find a strangely looking pine grove. Planted in 1930s, there are 400 trees that sharply twist to the north almost at the roots and then grow upwards in a semicircle.
    - Ever seen an upward moving waterfall? You can have a look at one on the Faroe Islands halfway from Iceland to Scotland.
    - If you ever get up to the top of the dam, which is about 726 ft high, you can try a little trick: take a bottle of water and pour it over the edge. You’ll see the water flow up instead of spilling down.
    - Another gravitational anomaly located on a road. Locals once found out that, if you put an empty can or a bottle on the ground, it will immediately start rolling uphill.
    - If you happen to be in Burma, make sure to visit this well-known site. A gold-leaf covered boulder sits upon the edge of a cliff, and a small pagoda is built on top of it. The impressive thing about the rock is that it only lightly touches the cliff for support.
    - If there ever was a thing that said “I defy gravity” out loud, it’s the Stone of Davasco. The huge 300-ton boulder stands precariously on the edge of a cliff and rocks a little bit from side to side in the wind.
    - The true mind-blowing feature of Devils Tower is that scientists can’t explain how it came to existence in the first place. You see, it’s an 867-foot rock formation with walls so steep they’re basically vertical. This piece of stone just rose amid rolling plains of Wyoming with nothing like it for miles and miles around.-
    - The House of Mystery in Gold Hill, Oregon, amazes its visitors with gravity-defying effects: you can’t stand straight there, always leaning to the side and having to hold on to something for balance.
    - Hudson Bay, Canada, is probably the only place in the world where gravity is indeed lower than anywhere else on the planet! Even skeptics can’t smirk at it because the difference has been measured with precision equipment.

  • Youll Stay Poor If You Make One of These 14 Mistakes

    7:59

Bernard Shaw once said that this world is full of idlers who don’t want to work and just want to make money, while those who are ready to work never get rich. You work hard but your salary still leaves much to be desired? You have to change something.

If you wanna be rich, you gotta work hard, plan your budget and live within your means. This all sounds like well-known, logical advice. However, there are some less obvious ways to get there, such as avoiding shopping on sunny days or in comfortable shoes.

    SUMMARY:
    - Try selling stuff online or bring it to one of the stores that gives you a discount in exchange for things you no longer need.
    - While it’s normal to change your underwear every day, your cashmere sweater will thank you if you don’t take it to the laundry after wearing it once.
    - If you wash a whole pile of dishes, you’ll use less water than if you’d do it multiple times with separate plates. It only makes sense to clean every plate straight away if you’re eating foods that stick to the plate for good.
    - Try calculating the price of something you want to buy in your own labor costs and hours.
    - A 2017 study from researchers at New York University and the University of Sydney in Australia has shown that people are more likely to take risks in bright light.
    - Do you invest a lot of time in your Instagram page? Make it work for you! If you have a hobby you’re passionate about, or are just great at describing your daily routine, turn it into your part-time or full-time job!
    - Even if you don’t have a large family and don’t need that much food or supplies, you can team up with your neighbors and order stuff together.
    - Fill the kettle with exactly as much water as you need to have tea, for example. It will not only save water, but also energy, and Mother Nature will be grateful to you.
    - The next time you decide to head to a hardware store for a tool you’ll likely never use again, go to a rental shop instead. And, it doesn’t only work with tools these days.
    - If you get hungry on your way somewhere and stop at a store or fast food restaurant, you’ll likely overspend on things you don’t really need and won’t finish anyway.

The Ross Island in the Andaman Islands is one of the preserved heritage sites of India that was once occupied by the British and later by the Japanese. The ancient British architecture, now ruined and engulfed by the roots of huge trees on this island, made me travel back in time. Because behind every ruined architecture there is a story.

  • An Island of Your Own | Our State Features

    7:39

Davis Island wasn’t always an island. In the 1900s, a hurricane cut a path through a peninsula that juts out into Core Sound, separating a stately home at its tip from the mainland.

Years later, a man achieved his childhood dream of living in that home. What he found was peace and beauty, and a love story that came to him, in an isolated place, with an unexpected knock on his door.

  • Island for sale on Delaware River

    1:53

Original airdate: 7/16/2018 | Realtor Theresa Barlow found herself in uncharted waters on Monday.

This is my first island. I've sold properties on the river in the past but I've never sold an island, said Barlow.

Getter's Island in the Delaware River is officially on the market.

The property, located in Easton, has been owned by a local family for more than 60 years who used it for camping and kayaking, but say it's time to part ways.

They eloquently said to me it was time for them to give up their king and queen crowns, said Barlow.

The more than five-acre island is covered with trees and the only way to get there is to paddle.

You can swim to it, you can boat to it, kayak to it, tube to it but currently there's no access from either the New Jersey or the Pennsylvania side, said Barlow.
