    SUMMARY:
    - Socotra is so isolated that there are just a few roads for its 40,000 inhabitants. It’s also host to 800 rare species of flora and fauna, a third of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
    - Diego Garcia is located over 1,000 miles south of India, isolated in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It is occupied by the US military, who leased it from the UK. The island is home to 2,000 military personnel, communication facilities, combat vessels, and 12,000-ft runways that can hold large aircraft.
    - The Eye, or El Ojo de la Tierra in Spanish, is a strange island that moves and rotates on its own axis. The Eye is fully circular, sits in a circle of water, and is located between the cities of Campana and Zarate in Argentina.
    - Isla Bermeja is shown on maps from the 18th and 19th centuries, but the island was not found in 1996 when Mexico conducted surveys. Nor was it located in an extensive study in 2009. Though it is clearly marked on maps, the island is currently nowhere to be found.
    - Okunoshima is a small island nestled in the Inland Sea of Japan. The island is small enough that it can be explored in under 2 hours. It’s grassy, and there’s a beach resort. But the best part of this island is the inhabitants: hundreds of rabbits roam the island.
    - This island has the highest concentration of venomous snakes in the world! For that reason, it is known as Snake Island. It hosts a population of over 2,000 lancehead vipers, one of the most dangerous species of snake.
    - Because of its macabre past, Poveglia is thought to be Italy’s most haunted island. This is a place for only the most hardcore ghost hunters and people who love a good horror story.
    - Island of Dolls is one of the creepiest places you can imagine! Though it was never meant to be a tourist attraction, hundreds of people visit the place each year.

    9.ISLAND OF SOCOTRA
Off the coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean is an island that seems as though it belongs on another planet. Socotra island has long been theorized as a location for the biblical Garden of Eden and just by looking at pictures of it you can see why. The island is home to several species of plants that can't be found anywhere else on Earth. There are the Dr. Seuss looking “adenium socotranum” which have big bulbous trunks and tiny gnarly branches that sprout from their tops and bare flowers that are a marvelous shade of pink.

    8.PALMYRA ATOLL
Though technically not an island but an atoll that formed from coral the mysterious nature of Palmyra Atoll cannot be ignored. Also known as Palmyra Island, and the breathtakingly beautiful ringlets sits between American Samoa and Hawaii. Though it is full of lush vegetation and appears unblemished by man the island has long be the subject of superstition and folktales. There have been several cases of violent shipwrecks and mysterious disappearances of ships on and around the island.

    7.VULCAN ISLAND
“Vulcan island” in the Philippines isn't necessarily an island that is shrouded in mystery but it is definitely a mindblowing locale on the northern Philippine island of Luzon on there sits a lake named Taal and in that lake there is an island called Taal volcano. Inside this island is the world's largest crater lake and inside of this lake there sits yet another island known as “Vulcan island”. Not only is Vulcan Island one of the most fascinating of natural recursion it happens to be located on one of the most active volcanoes in the entire Pacific Ocean.

    6.EASTER ISLAND
The world-renowned Easter Island still attracts tourists, anthropologists and archaeologists to this day who are both perplexed and in all of the statues left behind by the ancestors of the native Rapa Nui peoples.Though the mysteries behind these statues called Moai are now mostly solved, they aren't the only puzzle that has confounded visitors to the small island off of “Chile”. Scientists recently answered one of the biggest questions surrounding the Moai which was “how did the Rapa Nui we move these massive stone idols?”.

    5.THE ISLAND OF DOLLS
The Mexico City borough of “Xochimilco” is steeped in Mexican history. Because it has long been the hub that connects the various canals and lakes of Mexico. It has been the cultural melting pot of the country. One particular “floating garden” on the canals of Xochimilco, may be eerie to outsiders but its origins come from a caring place, in line with Mexico's tradition of honoring those who have passed from this life to the next. One day a man found the body of a young girl who had met with a tragic fate in the waters of one of the canals. When he later returned to the spot he found her.

    4.POVEGLIA ISLAND
Just off the coast of Venice, Italy lies Povegila Island which may have one of the most twisted and horrifying histories of any island on Earth. During the devastating bubonic plague outbreak of the 14th century the government of Venice decided to try and quarantine the infected by sending them to Poveglia Island where they would live out the rest of their days.
    3.ISLA BERMEJA
From the 1500s up until the late 1900s there existed an island off the “Yucatan Peninsula” in the Gulf of Mexico, at least according to maps there was. The island of Bermeja was long used as the geographical boundary for Mexico's section of the Gulf but several mapping expeditions in the 20th century that went looking for the island frankly couldn't find it. There are several theories as to how an island could appear on maps for the better part of 400 years but then suddenly disappear.

    2.FLOATING EYE ISLAND
While surveying the Parana Delta of northern Argentina in 2016 with the hopes of finding the perfect setting for his upcoming film, Argentinian filmmaker Sergio Neuspillerm found one of the most peculiar places in the world. Deep in the misty marshlands Sergio came upon a lake that appeared to be shaped like a perfect circle. Not only that. But there was an island in the lake that was exactly the same shape.

    1.DIEGO GARCIA ISLAND
In the middle of the Indian Ocean is “Diego Garcia Island” which has been shrouded in conspiracy. The island, which is part of the Chagos Archipelago, was uninhabited when it was settled by French colonists in 1793 who brought hundreds of slaves to the islands to work their plantations. The island would eventually fall under British control as a result of the Napoleonic Wars.

5 Most MYSTERIOUS Islands On Earth!

  • A Scary Island That Has Been Keeping a Secret for 80 Years

    10:56

Our story begins in the Tasman Sea, the body of water between Australia and New Zealand. It’s exactly here where the Lord Howe Island Group had been lying unperturbed until 1788. That year changed everything in the history of this lost place as British lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball discovered the central island of this group as he was on his way to nearby Norfolk Island. Having fulfilled his mission, Ball was heading home when he decided to claim a newly-uncovered territory for his country. At that time, nobody could’ve imagined the surprises this island would have in store for people decades later!
After Ball’s discovery, permanent settlements had already been established on the main island by 1834. Despite being just 6.2 miles long, Lord Howe Island represented (and still represents) an idyllic picture of a tropical paradise. As for the rest of the islands belonging to this group, they were mostly rocky volcanic landmasses.

  • Cocos Island - The mysterious island in the Pacific

    22:07

Coconut Island protrudes from the Pacific Ocean as the peak of a lone volcano, far off the Costa Rican coast. At the end of the 18th century, the English author Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have received the inspiration for his novel „Treasure Island“ here.

The tiny island comprises just 25 sqm² and is covered by an impenetrable jungle. Numerous streams, waterfalls and gorges epitomise the world‘s largest uninhabited rain forest island. Due to its isolation, unique flora and fauna have developed here. Today, as a national park and world natural heritage, the island is closely supervised by park rangers.

The outstanding underwater world surrounding the island abounds with marine fauna of every description. Hardly any other destination is as well-known for its countless large fish varieties, especially hammerhead, reef and offshore sharks. The film‘s author submerged to depths up to 400 meters on board the „Deep Sea“, a modern research submarine. During the dive, he ucceeded in shooting material of rare deep sea fish and shark species, which have never before been sighted near Coconut Island.

    9. The Fenn Treasure
Millionaire author and art collector Forrest Fenn was diagnosed with cancer and vowed to hide a treasure chest containing some of his most valuable possessions sometime before he died. Fenn survived and is now in his 80’s! In 2010, he buried an antique lock box full of goodies somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, north of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

    8. Treasure Of Lima
After conquering the Incan empire in the 16th century, the Spanish accumulated massive wealth, which they stored in Lima, Peru until 1820. That year, they moved the treasure out of the city in an effort to save it during a revolt. British Captain William Thompson was charged with the task of sailing around with the treasure aboard his ship, the Mary Dear, until the revolt ended.

    7. The Golden Owl
Known by the French name La Chouette d’Or, the golden owl is supposedly hidden in the French countryside. It weighs 33 pounds, is made of solid gold and silver, and has a diamond-encrusted head. Someone going by the pseudonym Max Valentin hid the item in 1993 and promised one million francs to whoever finds it. To help treasure hunters pinpoint the golden owl’s location, Valentin provided 11 clues.

    6. The Legend Of El Dorado
“El Dorado” is Spanish for “golden one.” Colombia’s Lake Guatavita is recognized as the site of the El Dorado legend. According to the story, thousands of years ago, the newly-appointed leader of the Muisca tribe covered himself in gold dust, traveled to the middle of the lake on a wooden raft, jumped in, and threw treasures into the water to honor the gods.

    5. Scepter Of Dagobert
The Scepter of Dagobert was one of the French crown jewels. A scepter is an ornamented staff carried by rulers on ceremonial occasions. It dates back to the seventh century, measures 22 inches (55.9 cm) long, and is made of solid gold. It was made from three parts: the rod, a hand holding the world, and a statue on top, the latter of which is the oldest component.

    4. The Florentine Diamond
The Florentine Diamond goes by several names, including the Tuscany Diamond, the Austrian Diamond, and the Austrian Yellow Diamond. It’s light yellow with green overtones and is believed to be of Indian origin. However, only some drawings and a few black-and-white photos of the diamond are known to still exist, so even its dimensions are somewhat of a mystery.

    3. The Beale Ciphers
In 1816, a man named Thomas Beale and some companions came across large amounts of gold and silver while mining in the Rocky Mountains north of Santa Fe. Way before Fenn’s treasure, but maybe that’s what inspired the location!

    2. Leon Trabuco’s Gold
Mexican businessman and millionaire Leon Trabuco arranged a series of mysterious flights to the New Mexico desert during the early 1930s. (Popular place, huh?) Rumor had it that he had conspired with his business partners to hide a vast amount of Mexico’s gold reserves while waiting for the precious metal’s price to soar, so they could sell it to the United States.

    1. The Lost Treasure Of Dutch Schultz
Dutch Schultz was a Prohibition-era gangster who died at the hands of a rival gang in a Newark, New Jersey tavern in 1935, during the Great Depression. During his final moments, Schultz uttered a statement about an alleged treasure his bodyguard, Bernard Rosenkrantz, had buried in New York State’s Catskill Mountains.

  • Scientists Finally Discovered the Truth About Easter Island

    10:09

We all know that the easter island heads have bodies – that’s not a mystery at all. But how did the easter island population build hundreds of statues? Scientists have recently solved this mystery and discovered where these people disappeared to and why.

For many decades, people's minds have been occupied with the mystery of Easter Island. A remote piece of volcanic soil, far away in the Pacific Ocean... But our planet hosts thousands of such lonely islands, what is so particular about this one?
The mystery is concealed not in the island itself but giant stone statues covering it. Who created the world-famous huge stone heads? Did they serve any specific purpose? Where did their creators arrive from and where did they disappear?
Well, it seems the answer is finally just around the corner!

    #easterisland #mystery #easterislandheads

    TIMESTAMPS
What do we know about Easter Island? 1:05
Amazing facts about Easter Island 2:18
How have the statues been moved around the island? 5:25
How could create Easter Island monuments? 7:24
What happened to people on Easter Island? 8:09

    SUMMARY
    - Where is Easter Island located?
Rapa Nui (which is the name given to Easter Island by its first inhabitants) is the territory of Chile and is situated in the southern Pacific Ocean. And it is so, so far that you can easily consider it one of the most distant places on the world's map. It lies 1,200 miles away from Pitcairn, which is its closest neighbor.

    - What's the main secret of the statues?
Most statues (834 out of 887) were carved from the material called tuff which is, in fact, compressed volcanic ash. Curiously, all the statues except one group face inland. It means their backs are turned to the ocean. Perhaps the reason for that was the belief that the statues were the protectors of the villagers that's why they overlooked the settlement. The only statues not fitting into this pattern can be found at Ahu Akivi, a sacred place for the people of Rapa Nui.

    - Theories about how the statues had been moved.
One of the most popular ones among the lovers of mysteries was the belief that the statues had been created and moved by aliens. But even if you like this theory, we are sorry to debunk it. The stone the statues were built from originates from the island itself. The birthplace of most of the material was an extinct volcano situated in the north-east of Easter Island and not another planet.

    - A new study about the island.
A new study has been conducted recently to specify the maximum number of the inhabitants in the heyday of the island's civilization.
The results arrived, and they were quite unexpected. It turned out that as many as 17 and a half thousand people could comfortably live on the island. At least 19 percent of the land could be covered with the fields of sweet potatoes that used to be the main source of food for the population. What is more, the islanders consumed quite a lot of seafood and fish.

    - Why did people on Easter Island disappear?
At first, it was believed that the reason for such a decrease of the population was an ecocide. The natives cut out large forests and palm trees making spare room for moving the statues around as well as agriculture. They thought the trees were going to grow back fast enough. It was a misleading concept. The deterioration of the environment resulted in hunger. And this, in turn, led to wars and cannibalism.
Nowadays, however, such a theory has been proven wrong. First of all, Rapa Nui inhabitants seemed to be very talented agricultural engineers. They deliberately fertilized the fields with the volcanic rock. In fact, another research has shown that people had been living on the island for many centuries. And the population only started to decrease when Europeans began visiting.

  • 11 Places More Mysterious Than Bermuda Triangle

    11:03

It’s one of the most terrifyingly fascinating places on our planet. Ships and planes simply vanish, radios and compasses just stop working, and some even say they’ve spotted UFOs there. And it's not the one and only Bermuda Triangle. There are at least 11 other mysterious places. So what are they, and how do they form?

Ivan T. Sanderson, a writer, a biologist, and a huge fan of the paranormal and inexplicable, traveled a lot and recorded his experiences. What caught his attention the most was where the strangest unexplained things kept happening. That is, disappearing ships and whatnot. He was able to map 12 of these places scattered all over the world. But the weird thing is, 6 of them lie almost perfectly in line above the Equator, and the same goes for the 6 below it...

    TIMESTAMPS:
    The Bermuda Triangle 1:11
    The Algerian Megaliths 2:14
    Mohenjo-Daro 3:02
    The Dragon’s Triangle 3:44
    The Hamakulia Volcano 4:30
    Easter Island 4:59
    The South Atlantic Anomaly 5:44
    Great Zimbabwe 6:20
    The Wharton Basin 6:53
    The Loyalty Islands 7:27
The North and South Poles 8:06

    Theories about these Vile Vortices:
    - Ley lines 8:52
    - Giant puzzle 9:32
    - A lot of geologic activity 10:04

    #mystery #bermudatriangle #brightside

    SUMMARY:
    - Besides the paranormal theories of wormholes to another dimension and gates to the underworld, the Bermuda Triangle is really foggy due to methane gas that sometimes makes it impossible for travelers to see, thus making navigation a little tricky too.
    - The Algerian Megaliths are an architectural anomaly, showing just how advanced these people were for a time when we didn’t have the technology to help us build stable constructions.
    - Mohenjo-Daro in Pakistan goes way back to the Indus Valley Civilization in 2500 BCE. Like in Algeria, this society was, for some reason, surprisingly advanced when it came to building and urban planning.
    - Heading further east along the same northern line, we arrive in Japan, where the Dragon’s Triangle, also called the Devil’s Sea, is located. The most astonishing thing about this Vile Vortex is that there’s an underwater city dubbed Japan’s Atlantis.
    - Located in the Ring of Fire, the next Vile Vortex is the Hamakulia Volcano in Hawaii. Locals treat it with utmost respect as the volcano is believed to have a mysterious power.
    - Now let’s head south of the Equator to one of the most isolated places on this planet: Easter Island in Polynesia. This is where you can find nearly 900 Moai statues created by the Rapa Nui people.
    - The South Atlantic Anomaly is a part of Earth where natural radiation flows out of control.
    - Another impressive megalith, this time in Zimbabwe. It was once home to around 20,000 people… but it’s now a ghost town.
    - Poor Australia has Vile Vortices on both sides. Heading over to the east, there’s the Loyalty Islands. A lot of strange whirlpools were found on this patch of the South Pacific as well as plenty of geologic activity.
    - The North and South Poles are on opposite ends of the planet, but they’ve got two things in common: ice and odd disappearances.

    10. It’s the Island of Santorini
A common view is that Atlantis was actually part of Santorini, a small island in the East Mediterranean that was partly-destroyed by the mighty Volcano of Thera in 1646 BC. Yeah, a looong time ago. Geologists have suggested that if you reconstruct the island of Santorini, you can see that this complete version, before it was destroyed by the volcano, used to be Plato’s mysterious island of legend!

    9. The Black Sea
Some are happy to believe that Atlantis was just a made up story of legend. But others believe it was a real place. Not only that, but it was actually something else. The theory of Atlantis being located in the Black Sea region is a great example of this. It all centers on the rise of ocean levels following the last Ice Age.

    8. Under Antarctica
Atlantis is usually believed to have somewhere warm, possibly around the Mediterranean, and you’d probably need your sunscreen (if it had been invented yet). However an American historian thought the truth was very different. And colder! Prof. Charles A Hapgood went on record in the 1950s as believing the mythical island was in fact, part of Antarctica.

    7. Is It Based on Truth?
Atlantis is often portrayed as being the perfect society, a peaceful utopia that was very technologically advanced. However, if you look at where the legend started, in Plato’s dialogues written in 330 BC, he describes a place that is just like any other.
According to him, it was a technologically advanced society that was wealthy, and had a very powerful military but it was also corrupt. He claims that Atlantis battled against the city of Athens who came out the hero.

    6. It was founded by Lemurians
An old idea about Atlantis is that it’s connected to the lost continent of Lemuria. Lemuria was believed to be located in the Indian or Pacific oceans but their continent sunk due to volcanic activity. They were beings who could travel between dimensions by altering the matter in their bodies. Plate tectonic theory and the existence of other continents strongly discount that this ever existed.

    5. Lost in the Bermuda Triangle
Plato talks about how Atlantis was swallowed by the sea in a single day. Even so, you’d think that over the centuries someone would have stumbled on something concrete to prove the island existed right? Well this kind of happened in the late 1960s.

    4. It’s in the Bahamas
If you’re in the United States then Atlantis may be closer than you think. To be more precise it could be 50 miles east of Miami! There lies the island of Bimini, part of a chain of islands in the Bahamas. Just 20 feet (6m) under the water there are some mysterious stones which could show the existence of Plato’s fabled kingdom.

    3. Founded by Aliens
You know I couldn’t leave this theory out, since so many people out there actually believe this stuff, no thanks to Ancient Aliens on the History Channel! Supposedly aliens landed on our planet in its infancy and helped in the development of our ancient cultures, one of which was Atlantis.

    2. It’s in Morocco
A German computer genius named Michael Hübner came up with a unique approach to finding Atlantis in 2008 when he gave a presentation at the Atlantis Conference in Athens. Others had taken an archaeological approach or used mysticism to locate Plato’s fantasy island.

    1.Plato Made It Up
I’m sad to say that the most realistic theory is that Atlantis was made up by Plato, the Athenian philosopher who first told the world about it. Plato lived between 424-328 BC. The legendary island with an advanced civilization was described in his Dialogues titled ‘Timaeus’ and ‘Critias’ which were written around 330 BC.

    9. Çatalhöyük, Turkey
Built in what was once Mesopotamia, the city of Çatalhöyük, which now resides in Turkey, is easily one of the biggest mysteries of the ancient world. I mean reaaaallly ancient, it reached its heyday around 7000 BC!! This place makes ancient Rome look modern!! These tightly clustered mudbrick houses kind of look like honeycombs, don’t you think?

    8. Palenque, Mexico
Mexico is a land of many mysteries and lost people and cities. But easily the biggest civilization, with the biggest mystery surrounding them, are the Mayans. This tribe came from an unknown area, arrived in Mexico, and set up an empire that lasted over 3000 years. Then they were gone. To this day, many still study the Mayans in order to find out more about them, and especially what happened to them.

    7. Cahokia, United States
This one might come as a surprise. In the United States, there is an old city that used to be the biggest city in North America at one point in time. This was the city of Cahokia, a pre-Columbian Native American City. It was founded around the year 600 and lasted until the 14th century. You can still go there today, it's across from St. Louis on the other side of the Mississippi river.

    6. Derinkuyu, Turkey
Turkey is home to another ancient, fascinating and mysterious place: Derinkuyu. The concept of making underground cities may seem like something from fantasy television shows, or Fraggle Rock, but many cultures have made very grand underground cities.

    5. Yonaguni Monument, Japan
Off of the coast of Japan, there is a place called Yonaguni Island which was famous for hammerhead sharks. Now, people are more intrigued by some unnerving formations in the water that were found by a diver in 1987. The Yonaguni Monument is a series of rock formations that has the scientific world split as to whether this is a natural design, or something made by humans. And it's a debate that continues on to this day.

    4. Machu Picchu, Peru
Machu Picchu is arguably one of the most interesting and revealing places in the world. Why? Because it's through this city that we got to take a look inside the Incan Empire. This civilization ruled a lot of South America for quite some time, and their territory included Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and more. And yet, for a while, we didn't know that much about them, until we found Machu Picchu.

    3. Thonis, Egypt
If you're big into history, then you knew that it was only a matter of time before Egypt showed up on my list. And as you know, it is home to many ruins and mysteries, and the main topic of several videos on this channel!! Be sure to check them out when you finish this video!!

    2. Great Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe
Sticking with Africa, let's head to Zimbabwe, which holds one of the biggest mysteries of the continent. It's called... Great Zimbabwe. Yeah, doesn't really sound mysterious, does it? But don't let that fool you, there's more to this than you might think.

    1. Pompeii, Italy
There are many scary stories in history, but the story of Pompeii is one that we just can’t get over. This is the city that was built in the fertile valley near a volcano, Mt. Vesuvius. When it erupted, it caught people by surprise and buried the city in soot and ash and left it covered and perfectly preserved for hundreds of years. Now much of it has been uncovered and it is a sad historical marvel and many people were frozen in time forever.

  • Snake Island - The DEADLIEST Island in the World!

    13:12

This mysterious island is so dangerous that Brazil has deemed it illegal for anyone to visit. Infested with of thousands of the deadliest snakes in the world, Ilha da Queimada, also known as ‘Snake Island’, is truly something that nightmares are made of. Here are 11 terrifying facts about Snake Island.

Don't forget to CHECK OUT our latest upload:

    11. There are Between 1-6 Snakes every 3 Feet
Researchers have determined that an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 golden lancehead vipers roam Snake Island, which means that somewhere on this earth there are an isolated 430,000 square meters of land infested with snakes.

    10. Pirates ‘Rrr to Blame
According to one tale, pirates buried their treasure on Ilha da Queimada Grande and in an attempt to keep it safe, planted the venomous snakes to stand guard.

    9. They Have No Predators
The golden lancehead viper’s diet consists mainly of birds that stop to rest during long modes of migration. The sneaky serpents hide out in the trees of the rainforest and patiently wait for the birds to venture near.

    8. Venom is Our Friend?
According to recent studies scientists have determined that the toxins from a golden lancehead viper can be used to make medicine. This has perpetuated a growing interest in the species, as tests are showing that the venom can be used for pharmaceutical purposes and has shown promise with ailments such as heart disease, blood circulation, and blood clots.

    7. They’re Endangered
The golden lancehead viper is considered an endangered animal by the Brazilian government. A very venomous creature requires careful protection from the government despite their power to do catastrophic harm with one bite.

    6. The Island’s Real Name Might be Worse
The island is a paradise— with its mild temperatures, crystalline sandy beaches, lush rainforests, sparkling cliffs, and majestic mountains. While most call it Snake Island, the real name translates roughly from Portuguese to “slash and burn fire” or “big burnt island.”

    5. Ghosts of the Past
Someone had to man the operation and in the early 1900s, a lighthouse keeper and his family did just that. As legend would have it, the family woke one night and ran in terror after snakes began crawling in through their windows. Later, their lifeless bodies were found scattered across the island.

    4. The Fisherman and his Boat
Legend has it that a fisherman’s boat wandered off course before stumbling upon the murky quiet of an unknown island abode. At first, the fearless sailor was counting his lucky stars, as he began plucking at the surplus of bananas which grew there. Suddenly a snake snuck from the trees and took the man by surprise.

    3. The Whole Island is Outlawed
Anyone who does so is by law required to bring a doctor alongside. Scientists have determined that a bite from a golden lancehead viper carries with it a 7% chance of survival, due to the potency of venom alone, and a 3% chance based on the nature of isolation and distance from help. Once bitten the venom will quickly consume its victim, causing immediate kidney failure, muscle tissue dystrophy, and even repercussions in the brain. Due to these risks alone, the Brazilian government put a ban against anyone entering its grounds.

    2. The Black Market
Smugglers have been known to sneak to the island to trap snakes and sell them for a hefty profit on the black market. These beauties can range anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 dollars, yet there are many risks involved with going to the island to get them.

    1. Skin-Melting Venom
The golden lancehead’s venom is so potent it is 5 times more deadly than that of their mainland counterparts (save for a few exceptions, as the lancehead viper isn’t the most venomous in the world, though it is one of them). Their venom is so powerful it has been shown to melt human skin on contact. While the likelihood of survival from this type of snakebite is very good if treated quickly, there aren’t any resources on the island to cure such an untimely attack.

    SUMMARY:
    - For a very long time, scientists couldn’t figure out what the reason was behind this crimson fall. At first, they believed that red algae gave the water its gory tint. But new studies found that iron oxides are present in the water.
    - Despite these islands constantly moving, locals build their huts on them because most people in the area earn money by fishing in the lake.
    - In the hot Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, there’s a 226-foot-wide hole that’s been on fire for almost 50 years!
    - If “lightning never strikes the same place twice” then apparently this unique spot in Venezuela where the Catatumbo River meets Lake Maracaibo didn’t get the memo. Here, there’s an average of 260 storm days and about 1.2 million lightning bolts striking it a year.
    - Located deep in the Peruvian Amazon, this 4-mile-long river known as Shanay-Timpishka gets as hot as 196°F, which obviously means no swimming if you don’t wanna become soup!
    - The devastating flood that hit Kerala, India last year almost submerged the whole state underwater. But then the locals saw a narrow strip of sand that had surfaced from the water along the beach and literally split the sea into two.
    - While the national average of twin births is no more than 9 in 1,000, the number is as high as 45 in 1,000 in Kodinhi.
    - Speaking of mysterious villages, this real-life and literal sleepy hollow is the remote town of Kalachi in Kazakhstan. In 2013, locals couldn’t stop falling asleep while they were doing everyday activities.
    - This mystical well is located near the River Nidd, which runs through Knaresborough in North Yorkshire, UK. Oh yeah, and its water is known for turning objects into stone!

    SUMMARY
-Every year when the snow and frozen water melt, Roopkund Lake in the Himalayas reveals 300 skeletons dumped in it.
-The Hessdalen Lights occasionally turn yellowish or reddish, and nobody knows what makes them change color.
-Canadian fur trapper Joe Labelle came to a village located on the shore of Lake Anjikuni to find it completely deserted.
-Some folks call the Devil's Sea the Pacific Bermuda Triangle since ships and planes tend to disappear there with the same regularity as its North Atlantic counterpart.
-The Lake Michigan Triangle has been gaining its notorious reputation since 1891 when a ship disappeared in its waters, along with its crew of seven sailors.
-If you turn off the engine of your car and leave it in neutral on the Magnetic Hill, your vehicle will start climbing ahead, possibly at a speed of 12 miles per hour.
-About a mile before the river empties into Lake Superior, a rocky outcrop splits it in two. And while the eastern flow drops 50 feet down and keeps flowing into the lake, the western part travels 10 feet down into a giant hole... and vanishes.
-Located in Siberia, the Patomskiy Crater is described as a mound with a perfectly circular shape. It’s as big as a 25-story building, sits right in the middle of a wooded area with its top chopped off, and presents quite a sight.
-The Boling River really is steaming hot. At a temperature of 187°F, it’s not exactly boiling, but it’s pretty close.
-Located on the thin Curonian Spit that divides the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon is one of the strangest places on Earth. The pine trees in this forest have shockingly unusual shapes: they twist in spirals and circles along the ground.

  • 9 Most MYSTERIOUS Islands On Earth!

    12:32

Islands throughout the world that are shrouded in mystery! From Mexico's creepy Island of the Dolls to the Naval Base on Diego Garcia

#9. “Island of Socotra”- Off the coast of Somalia in the Indian ocean is an island that seems as though it belongs on another planet. Socotra Island has long been theorized as a location for the biblical Garden of Eden, and just by looking at pictures of it you can see why. The island is home to several species of plants that are can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. There are the Dr. Seuss looking Adenium socotranum which have big bulbous trunks and tiny gnarly branches that sprout from their tops and bear flowers that are a marvelous shade of pink. There odd appearance makes them kind of look like giant root vegetables. Then there are the Dragon’s Blood Trees which look like perfect natural umbrellas. The have trunks that resemble that of an average tree but their thick tightly bunched branches shoot upwards and form a mushroom like crown. Socotra is also home to three geographically unique species of bird: the socotra sunbird, socotra grosbeak and socotra starling. There aren’t many other creatures that inhabit the island other than that of bats and insects and the last time it was home to man was around the year 100 A.D. Adding to the mystery, the island has been the site of dozens of shipwrecks over the years.

#8. “Palmyra Atoll”- Though technically not an island but an atoll that formed from coral the mysterious nature of Palmyra Atoll cannot be ignored. Also known as Palmyra Island, the breathtakingly beautiful ringlet sits between American Samoa and Hawaii. Though it is full of lush vegetation and appears unblemished by man the island has long be the subject of superstition and folktales. There have been several cases of violent shipwrecks and mysterious disappearances of ships on and around the island. Those who have observed the island and survived to tell their tale have claimed having seen some extremely bizarre sights like that of floating lights, ghosts and sea monsters. It is also reported to be the home of an incredible amount of sharks who may have developed a distinct taste for humans. There is also the story of lost Incan treasure that may still be on the island. These tales and others which cannot be discussed do to their graphic nature have made Palmyra the stuff of legend amongst sailors and Pacific Islanders for centuries.

#7. “Vulcan Island”- Vulcan Island in the Philippines isn’t necessarily an island that is shrouded in mystery but it definitely is a mindblowing locale. On the northern Philippine island of Luzon there sits a lake named Taal and in that lake there is an island called Taal Volcano, inside this island is the world’s largest crater lake and inside of this lake there sits yet another island, known as Vulcan Island. Not only is Vulcan Island one of the most fascinating of natural recursion it happens to be located on one of the most active volcanoes in the entire Pacific Ocean. Because of this fact it is incredibly dangerous to visit Vulcan Island as it has been quaking and bubbling consistently since 1991.

    Cat Island
The island of Tashirojima (tash-sheero-jeemah) in Japan has a human population of about 100 people … and the cat population outnumbers them by about 6 to 1. The felines have managed to thrive largely due to the belief that they bring good luck. A belief in Japanese cultures says that cats will bring good fortune if you encounter them. That has led to tourists making a fuss over the critters, ensuring that they’re well fed and cared for. This island even features houses that have catlike shapes, where the animals can relax in style.

    Mysterious ‘Eye’-land
This strange location is known as the Eye … and due to its bizarre appearance and remote location, there’s speculation it could be a cover for a massive alien base that sits under the surface. The Eye is said to rotate on its own axis in the middle of a marsh. It was discovered by a film crew shooting a documentary concerning paranormal activities while in the Parana (pah-rah-nah) Delta near Buenos Aires in Argentina. The island is surrounded by a thin water channel measuring around 130 yards in diameter … both the land and water are so precisely rounded that it doesn’t seem possible to be a naturally occurring formation. Argentina has had its fair share of UFO sightings … maybe the mysterious island is somehow involved!

    The Island of the Dolls
Almost all the trees here are adorned with dolls hanging from their branches. The strange practice is said to have started when a grieving heard the screams of a woman drowning in a nearby canal. He couldn’t save her, but her voice still haunted him at night. To ward off her spirit, he started hanging dolls from the trees. He was given additional dolls and materials from people who were sympathetic to his plight … and his ritual become something of a legend ... and gained a name as an eerie tourist attraction.

    Third-Order Island
This island is located in Taal (taaal) Lake on the island of Luzon (lu-ZON) in the Philippines. Volcano Island is found in the center of the lake … that island contains a crater lake called Yellow Lake …. And that body of water has its own small island, known as Volcano Point! It’s an example of a third-order island … Or an island that is within a lake, that is within an island within a lake … which is located within an island located in the Pacific Ocean!

Socotra (sa-ka-tra) Island -- It’s a remote island of Yemen that separated from mainland Africa some six million years ago. The ancient, bizarre dragon’s blood tree and uniquely shaped bulbous bottle tree make the area look like the setting for a sci-fi film … or maybe an adventure in Middle Earth. The island’s wide-ranging biodiversity results in trees and plants growing here that are not found anywhere else on earth.

Easter Island -- Rapa Nui is a remote volcanic island in Polynesia … but it’s better known as Easter Island. And it’s best known for those famous stone heads. There are 887 of the huge stone figures that are thought to have been carved during the 12th to 17th centuries. Known as Moai (moey), they stand around 13 feet on average, weigh 13 tons, and are carved out of porous volcanic ash … then placed atop ceremonial stone platforms. The enormous monuments are scattered in diverse locations across the island. And did you know, the famous heads are actually connected to bodies underground … you just don’t see them in the majority of photographs. To date, no one knows how those statues were moved … or what their exact purpose may have been.

    North Sentinel Island
Located southeast of the Bay of Bengal in the Andaman (AN-duh-mun) Sea, this is one of those most remote places on the planet. But it is inhabited by a tribe known as the Sentinelese (sen-TEN-uh-leez) … and some experts say they’ve called the place home for going on 60,000 years! Not much is known about them or their culture … except that they don’t like visitors. Attempts at contact have been greeted with arrows and spears directed at the intruders … in some instances, even killing the strangers on sight. There’s a lot of mystery still surrounding this island … and it’ll likely stay that that way for some time to come.

  • 10 Strange And Mysterious Islands

    8:01

Here are some bizarre and mysterious islands from across the globe, most of which you have probably never heard of, probably. One of the most strange islands is Por Bajin, what appears to be a ruined medieval island palace or fortress. Some believe it was even a prison. Either way it's unknown who built it or for what purpose. But it's not quite as strange as Chiloe, an island said to be home to witches and zombies. Chiloe is known within Chile for being rich in folklore and many within the country believe legends featuring it.

Vulcan point is an island within multiple lakes. I mean... it's an island inside a lake inside and island. It's amazing, and tiny. It's among the more light hearted entries on this list, along with the island of Rabbits in Japan. It's an island ruled by rabbits, countless of the beasts who have no natural predators. For this reason they have no need to be timid at all, and unlike most rabbits they run towards any people they see. Watch this full video for more interesting islands.

    10. Champ Island
Champ Island is one of the most remote and mysterious islands in the Russian Arctic. It is part of the Franz Josef Archipelago. The 374 sq. km. isle has tundra landscapes and stone spheres randomly spread throughout the terrain. The spheres range in size from boulders to small pebbles that can be held in the palm of your hand. The most tame theory is that they were shaped by an ancient civilization for unknown purposes, and of course there are the usual alien theories involved.
Some believe the spheres may be the result of concretion, a process by which the precipitation of mineral cement between the particles in sedimentary rock or soil forms a hard mass. But, scientists have determined the spheres were actually formed underwater, so concretion in this case wouldn’t have worked. Did ancient people carve these stone balls underwater? Nobody knows, but that of course, is part of its mysterious charm!

    9. Bouvet
Bouvet is the most remote uninhabited island in the world! To give you an idea of how remote it is: the nearest landmass is Antarctica. Its roughly 75 square miles is mostly covered by glaciers. There is very little aside from moss, seals, seabirds and penguins. However, the island has been at the center of some peculiar mysteries. An early discoverer of the island documented a second island nearby that was never seen again. In the 1960s, an abandoned lifeboat and various supplies were found on the island, though nothing was ever seen of its passengers.
In 1979, the United States’ Vela satellite picked up a bright flash of light between Bouvet and Prince Edward Islands. Known as the Vela Incident, it is now believed that the flash was caused by a secret South African-Israeli joint nuclear bomb detonation, though neither country has officially admitted it.
Today, Norway lays claim to the island and has even designated a special internet domain for the island. As of yet, the domain, “.bv” remains unused. They’d better watch out or the pirate bay might take it over!

    8. Daksa Island
Called the “Island of Ghosts”, Daksa in the Adriatic Sea near Dubrovnik, Croatia, was once the home of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Sabina from 1281 CE to the 19th century. The small island also has a villa and an ancient lighthouse. However, it was little used after the monastery closed, and even less so after the events of 1944. At the height of World War II, Yugoslav partisans celebrated a victory by coming to Dubrovnik and rounding up 53 men suspected of being Nazi sympathizers, including the mayor of Dubrovnik and the local parish priest. Without a trial or evidence, they took them to Daksa and executed them.
In 2009, two mass graves were unearthed on the island. DNA samples were taken from the victims of the Daksa Massacre, and some were identified. The remains finally received a proper burial in 2010, 66 years after they were executed. But there are tales of the ghosts of the victims haunting the island, still crying out for justice. The little island is for sale, and has been for several years—without any takers. Not sure who wants to buy that dark piece of history.

    7. Clipperton Island
Clipperton Island is a coral atoll south of Mexico and west of Guatemala in the Pacific. It was claimed by the French, followed by the Americans, and they both mined it for guano. Mexico took possession in 1897 and allowed a British company to mine the guano there. Around 1910, Mexico sent 13 soldiers to guard the island. Their wives and some servants joined them, and soon children were born. One of the island residents was a reclusive lighthouse keeper named Victoriano Álvarez. In 1914, supply ships stopped coming due to the Mexican Civil War, and malnutrition set in. The soldiers living on the island started to die off, until only the wives and their children remained. Victoriano Álvarez, the lighthouse keeper, also survived.
Álvarez seized control of the survivors and declared himself king of the island. He spent the next few years terrorizing the women and children of Clipperton Island, until they banded together to kill him. Gone was the mad king of Clipperton Island. In 1917, the last surviving islanders, three women and eight malnourished children, were rescued and evacuated by an American ship.

Probably one of the most unbelievable occurrences of the modern era that most would scoff at the very idea of, disappearing islands have become incredibly common for cartographers and charters of all kind. It is due to this that it is a common occurrence for organizations to update surveys and relocate previously documented islands just to assure that it still exists in its general vicinity.

Though most of these causes are unexplainable and downright creepy, it is important to be aware of such a phenomenon to better understand what could possibly be the cause for a future discovery. So here are 10 mysterious islands that suddenly vanished off the face of the Earth.

9 (Nine) Most MYSTERIOUS Islands On the Earth
From the possible site of the legendary Garden of Eden to an island that may cover an alien base. Today we look at the nine most mysterious islands on earth.

    Number nine

island of socotra off the coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean, is an island that seems as though it belongs on another planet. socotra Island has long been theorized as a location for the Biblical Garden of Eden. And just by looking at pictures of it, you can see why the island is home to several species of plants that can't be found anywhere else on earth. There are the Dr Seuss looking at denim psycho Trainum, which have big bulbous trunks and tiny gnarly branches that sprout from their tops and bare flowers that are a marvellous shade of pink. Their odd appearance makes them kind of look like giant root vegetables. Then there are the dragon's blood trees, which look like perfect natural umbrellas. They have trunks that resemble that of an average tree, but they're thick, tightly bunched branches shoot upwards and form a mushroom like crown. socotra is also home to three geographically unique species of bird. The psychiatrist Sunbird Sokoto Tra GROSS Bik and psychiatrist darling. There aren't many other creatures that inhabit the island other than that of bats and insects, and the last time it was home to men was around the year 180s adding to the mystery. The island has been the site of dozens of shipwrecks over the years.

    Number two,
a floating isle island while surveying the Parana Delta of northern Argentina in 2016. With the hopes of finding the perfect setting for his upcoming film, Argentinian filmmaker Sergio News Killam found one of the most peculiar places in the world, deep in the misty marshlands. Sergio came upon a lake that appeared to be shaped like a perfect circle. Not only that, but there was an island in the lake that was exactly the same shape, and it filled up the majority of the lake, leaving only a thin ring of water around it. Sergio was fascinated with the island that would come to be called the eye and quickly returned with a small research party. His team reported some strange findings. They found that the island was actually floating in the water and it appeared to rotate around the lake on its own axis. They also say that the lake water was astonishingly cold and clear and the bottom of the lake was significantly harder than the rest of the ground in the area. Because of these mysterious observations, Sergio decided to scrap the initial film project he was working on in favor of shooting a documentary on the eye. Since the word got out on Floating Island, several conspiracy theories with it at the center have arisen. The most popular of these is that the island is covering a secret alien base. No one. Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean is Diego Garcia Island, which has been shrouded in conspiracy. The island, which is part of the Chagas archipelago, was uninhabited when it was settled by French colonists in 1793 who brought hundreds of slaves to the islands to work their plantations. The island would eventually fall under British control as a result of the Napoleonic wars after slavery was abolished. The freed slaves, who had established their own cultural identity, stayed at the island and continued to till the land.

But the chicco science, as they had come to be called, were forced out of their home in nineteen seventy one in order to make way for a United States naval base. The US and UK had come to an agreement allowing the US Navy to take control of the island, but the base that the Navy wanted to build required that to go science to be unwillingly relocated. The arguably unethical methods the United States used to get the islanders to comply, such as slowly cutting off their supplies or euthanizing their pets, would only add depth to the conspiracy theories that would subsequently arise about the island.

    10. The Zone of Silence
The zone of silence, often called Mexico's Bermuda Triangle, is a region of the Chihuahuan desert in the north of the country where radio signals don’t work, and, weirdly, compasses go haywire if they are placed close to the ground.

    9. The Hessdalen Lights
About 250 miles from Oslo, the capital city of Norway, is a mysterious valley, known as the Hessdalen site. Visitors here have witnessed peculiar lights hovering in the sky. Rather than having a reasonable explanation like the northern lights, these lights are usually described as flashing orbs that vary in size from small specks of light to ones the size of cars that light up the sky.

    8. The Taos Hum
Taos is a small, arty community in New Mexico that’s been the home to a number of stars over the years such as Julia Roberts and D.H Lawrence. Since the early 90's, however, a strange hum has been reported that's turned this once quiet town into a mystery- with about 2% of residents stating that they have heard the sound.

    7. Bigelow Ranch
Robert Bigelow, the renowned aviation pioneer, had another hobby other than selling planes- researching the paranormal. This led to his purchase of the Skinwalker ranch in the mid 90’s to head up his research, but this place, itself, is full of mystery.

    6. The Devil’s Kettle
The Devil’s kettle is a stunning waterfall on the Brule River in the Judge C.R, Magney state park in Minnesota. While the picturesque formation has attracted visitors for decades, there’s a mystery about the flow of water here- as it approaches the waterfall, the Brule river splits into two. Half of it cascades down to the lower part and continues on, while the rest falls into an ominous looking dark hole in the hill and, from there, it seemingly vanishes.

    5. San Luis Valley
The San Luis Valley, in southwest Colorado, has been an attraction for UFO hunters for a long time- so much so that it's the home to a UFO watchtower constructed to help people look out for the unexplained.

    4. Namibia’s Fairy Circles
For hundreds of years, deep in the Namib desert of Namibia, mysterious circles have been appearing in the sand. Resembling a polka dot pattern, they are often referred to as being fairy circles and have been mentioned in local myths for centuries. These stories talk of how these red circles, with fringes of grass, are the footprints of gods- or clumps of land that have been poisoned by an evil dragon that lives underground.

    3. The South Atlantic Anomaly
The earth's magnetic field is not as constant as you may initially think, with one region showing some very unusual signs. Known as the South Atlantic Anomaly, it covers a huge area between Chile to Zimbabwe- throughout which the magnetic field appears to be weakening. This is a factor that space scientists have to take into account because the anomaly affects electronics on satellites so much that they have to make sure to avoid it.

    2. The Sounds of the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights are one of the most stunning natural displays you can see anywhere on earth. It has long been understood why the colors streak across the sky in the way that they do, but there’s one element to the phenomenon that still can’t be explained- the fact that sometimes they make noises.

    1. Devil’s Sea
The Devil’s sea, which is also known as the Dragon’s triangle, is just off the coast of Japan in the Pacific Ocean. The region stretches from Japan to the islands of Bonin, and also covers a large swathe of the Philippine Sea. It’s a place that exhibits much stronger electromagnetic waves than is normal elsewhere on the planet, and this leads to some strange effects.

Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

    10. Antarctic Volcano
You know that Antarctica is covered in ice, but surprisingly, this hostile part of the planet is actually sitting on something surprising. This year scientists made an amazing discovery about Antarctica. It turns out there is a huge expanse of buried volcanoes under the ice that until now, no one knew existed. And not just one or two… we’re talking 91 volcanoes! That’s a whole lot of lava…

    9. Alien Ladder
When it comes to working out what’s going on in Antarctica, Google Earth is both a blessing and a curse. It gives scientists and even amateurs access to places most of us won’t ever be able to visit in person, but it is also a treasure trove for conspiracy theorists who are constantly speculating on the images!

    8. Climate Change Soundtrack
The Earth is getting warmer by the decade. Surface temperature is rising and weather patterns are getting more extreme. If you’re not worried about climate change, you should be! Just in October of this year, 2018, the United Nations scientific panel issued a warning that damage and crisis caused by climate change may affect us severely by 2040.

    7. Crashed Spaceship
When a strange object was found in the snows of South Georgia Island this year, it looked like UFO and alien hunters had finally gotten their wish. The long trail leading up to the object suggested that this thing, whatever it was, had crash-landed from another world.

    6. Mysterious Light
Google has a lot to answer for when it comes to Antarctica. A member of Conspiracy Depot, spotted a mysterious object using Google Maps. Word spread and only a matter of months ago eagle-eyed internet users were speculating over the presence of a shaft of light, which appeared to be emanating from a black object on a mountainside. It was thought to be either a beam of light or something reflecting light off it. It’s been described as a “lantern”, or light pointing towards or indicating something.

    5. Underwater World
When ice cracks it’s a pretty awesome spectacle. But there’s one thing you maybe don’t think about when something like that happens… the water underneath. The melting Ice can often be covering the most remarkable things and often for thousands of years.

    4. Alien Bacteria
While we have just recently learnt of the possible existence of water on Mars, we should also remember that looking closer to home gives us an insight into extraterrestrial life. Last Christmas, a team from the University of New South Wales ventured into the harshest parts of the Antarctic landscapes, which are referred to as the “desert regions”.

    3. Giant Hole
Ice is pretty much a constant in Antarctica so when something dramatic happens like a big hole appearing on the surface, it makes scientists sit up and pay attention. I mentioned ice cracking earlier but this is a different phenomenon known as a ‘polynia’.

    2. Antarctic Pyramids
You’d think watching Antarctica on Google Earth would be pretty boring. What is there to look at, apart from mile after mile of snow and mountains? Well now you know there’s lots of stuff going on!! There’s plenty to check out if you’re into ETs and the supernatural! Enthusiasts’ brains went into overdrive in 2016 when a cluster of pyramid shapes were spotted from above.

    1. Mysterious Structure
In 2012 an internet user posted a Google Earth image of what appears to be a buried object. Estimated to be over 14 miles in length and over 4 miles wide, it radiates white light and also seems to be obscured by online brush strokes, leading some to speculate Google has taken part in a cover up.

    10. Colliding Galaxies
Thanks to gravity, the Milky Way galaxy, will someday either collide with or at least sideswipe its neighbor, Andromeda.
The galactic merger, projected to occur around four billion years from now, will cause stars to move along new trajectories. Thankfully, they’re unlikely to smash into each other, due to the vast distance between them, and our solar system will probably remain unharmed by the event.

    9. Reindeer Cyclone
While I know you’ve heard of hurricanes and cyclones, where massive winds rotate round and round, did you know that there are reindeer cyclones too? This is real, and they used to be a real threat to Viking hunters in the past. This phenomenon is a defensive strategy that reindeer use to confuse predators, making it difficult for the perceived threat, human or otherwise, to effectively target a single animal. Both wild and captive reindeer practice this behavior.

    8. Cannibalistic Bunker Ants
In 2013, Polish scientists discovered a colony of up to a million wood ants that had been trapped in an abandoned nuclear bunker for years, with no food source other than their dead nestmates. There were also no signs of reproduction taking place, including no queens, larvae, or ant cocoons. Yet when the researchers returned to the site two years later, the population, which consisted only of worker ants, had somehow grown.

    7. Grasshopper Blizzard
Who was in Las Vegas last year?? You probably will remember THIS. Last July, tens of thousands of grasshoppers invaded Las Vegas for several days, in a swarm so dense, it could be seen on weather radar! They crowded the strip and were stacking up at the entrances to the casinos! These were migrating pallid-winged grasshoppers and the invasion came after a particularly wet winter and spring in Nevada, which saw twice as much rainfall as usual.

    6. Earth’s Most Inaccessible Point
There’s a place on our planet that sits in closer proximity to astronauts in space than to any humans on Earth. Point Nemo is the world’s most remote location -- in other words, the furthest point from land, giving a literal meaning to the term “the middle of nowhere.” Officially called the “oceanic pole of inaccessibility,” it’s surrounded by over 1,000 miles (1,609 km) of ocean in all directions.

    5. Earliest-Known Walking Animal
Around 550 million years ago, during the Ediacaran Period, a segmented, millipede-like worm called Yilingia spiciformis died along the muddy ocean floor. Its remains and trail became fossilized and are the earliest-known evidence of an animal walking along the Earth’s surface.

    4. Mexico’s Hidden Beach
Located at the mouth of Banderas Bay among the Marieta Islands, roughly 22 nautical miles west of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, is an island with a gaping hole in its surface containing a stunning beach called Playa del Amor, more commonly known as the Hidden Beach. Atlas Obscura describes it as “like something out of a fantasy novel: a wide, sandy cavern with the blue waters of the Pacific rushing in.”

    3. Bismuth
Bismuth, element 83 on the periodic table, is a crystalline, white metal with various uses, including in cosmetics, alloys, fire extinguishers, and ammunition, and as the main ingredient in Pepto-Bismol. This brittle material is a post-transition metal, meaning it shares some characteristics with transition metals, but is softer, conducts more poorly, has unusually low thermal and electric conductivity, and has a lower melting point.

    10. Floating Eye Island
In northeast Argentina, there’s a nearly perfectly circular island which floats and rotates. Dubbed “The Eye” for its bizarre shape, the island is located in the Parana Delta marshes outside Buenos Aires, in a small, round lake measuring 387 feet (118 meters) across.

    9. Manpupuner Rock Formations
There are seven magnificent rock pillars jutting out from the landscape just above the Arctic Circle, and slightly west of Russia’s Ural Mountains. Standing between 98 and 200 feet high (30-60 meters), they are known as the Manpupuner Rock Formations, Seven Strong Men, and the Poles of the Komi Republic.

    8. Caño Cristales River
Colombia’s 62-mile-long (100 km) Caño Cristales river has also been nicknamed the “Liquid Rainbow” and the “River of Five Colors.” Famous for its vivid color palette, it is surrounded by three very diverse ecosystems: the Andes, the Amazon, and the plains so there is a huge diversity of animals and plants you can find here.

    7. Shilin
Shilin, or the Stone Forest, covers a 116-square-mile (300 km2) area of China’s Yunnan Province. Its landscape is dominated by 270-million-year-old karst formations that were created by water and wind erosion and seismic activity. Nature can do a lot! Within the collection of stalagmite-like limestone pillars are vast arrays of labyrinths.

    6. Marble Caves Of Chile
Chile’s Cavernas de Mármol, known more simply as the Marble Caves, are part of a solid marble formation bordering a remote glacial lake called General Carrera Lake along the Chile-Argentina border, in the heart of Patagonia.

    5. Lake Kelimutu
The three crater lakes of Flores, Indonesia’s Mount Kelimutu National Park are known as the “boiling lakes.” Each lake has its own unique array of colors that change independently and unpredictably, ranging from blue, green, and black to white, red, and even a deep chocolate brown.

    4. Cave Of The Crystals
Also called the Giant Crystal Cave, Mexico’s Cave of the Crystals is located 984 feet (300 meters) beneath the Sierra de Naica Mountain in Chihuahua. It contains gigantic, mesmerizing gypsum crystals that are at least a half-million years old, and wasn’t discovered until the year 2000.

    3. Mauritius Waterfall
Located roughly 1,200 miles (2,000 km) off the African coast, in the Indian Ocean, you can find the island of Mauritius. On the southwestern tip of the island there’s a fascinating optical illusion that looks like an underwater waterfall.

    2. Deadvlei
Namibia’s Deadvlei, or “dead marsh,” is located in the central Namib Desert. Deadvlei sits near some of the world’s tallest sand dunes, which tower imposingly over the landscape at heights of up to 1,312 feet (400 meters), even taller than the Empire State Building.

    1. Yosemite Firefall
California’s Yosemite National Park is home to Horsetail Fall, also known as Firefall. It’s a seasonal, double-streamed waterfall that flows during the winter and early spring. The eastern fall flows from a height of 1,540 feet (470 meters), while the western side descends from 1,570 feet (480 meters).
