  • The Largest US NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIER FORMATION on The Planet

    10:29

America Is an Aircraft Carrier Superpower.
Rear Adm. Lou Yuan's threat isn't an empty one. The Chinese military has deployed an array of weaponry that it acquired specifically to target American flattops.

But a U.S. Navy test in 2005 proved that even if you hit them, carriers are really hard to sink.

  • The Future USS Enterprise : The world’s best nuclear-powered aircraft carrier ever built

    10:05

USS Enterprise (CVN-65): The first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier

USS Enterprise (CVN-80): The Best nuclear-powered aircraft carriers ever built

A piece of the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will serve another 25 years in the Navy.

The former Enterprise carrier (CVN 65) was decommissioned in 2017 after several years of inactivation work was completed at Newport News Shipbuilding.

Now one of the anchors from the Enterprise has been installed on another aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington.

That ship just reached the midway point of its midlife Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding.

During the overhaul process, shipbuilders inspecting the Washington found that one anchor on the carrier needed to be replaced. Enter the anchor from the Enterprise.

As the ship underwent the inactivation process at Newport News, where it was originally built, the anchors were preserved and stored.

The 32-ton starboard side anchor was built in 1957 and stayed on Enterprise throughout the ship’s naval service. It was refurbished and installed on the Washington.

This is not the first time an anchor from the Enterprise has seen continued life.

The port side anchor from Enterprise was installed on the USS Abraham Lincoln in 2014 as the Lincoln underwent RCOH in Newport News.

The Enterprise served the Navy for 51 years from 1961 to 2012. The name will live on with CVN-80, which will also be built by Newport News Shipbuilding.

USS Enterprise (CVN-80) forms the third supercarrier of the new Gerald Ford-class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers for the United States Navy. The vessel was named in December of 2012 and follows some eight other USN vessels to carry the Enterprise name. Construction will begin around 2018 by Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding of Newport, Virginia. Commissioning is planned for sometime in 2025 or later. USS Enterprise (CVN-80) will join lead ship USS Gerald Ford (CVN-78) and sister-ship USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) once she raises her flag. Both remain under construction as of March 2014.

Once commissioned, USS Enterprise (CVN-80) is expected to relieve the aging USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), launched in 1975 and commissioned in 1977.

As designed, the USS Enterprise will feature a displacement of 100,000 tons and length measuring 1,100 feet with a beam of 134 feet and draught to 39 feet. Propulsion will come from a pair of A1B series nuclear reactors (of all-new design for improved power and efficiency) which will grant her essentially unlimited range and provide speeds in excess of 30 knots in ideal conditions. The listed shelf-life of the nuclear reactors is between twenty and twenty-five years. The vessel's entire complement will number 4,660 personnel including a large air wing. Construction of the vessel will also incorporate radar-reducing features.

The general profile of USS Enterprise will follow tried-and-true USN tradition with a starboard side island superstructure and stern-to-portside landing area. Catapults will be featured over the forecastle and to portside. The island superstructure will reside somewhat aft of amidships to allow for a clearer, unobstructed forward flight deck - presenting something of a new challenge to incoming naval aviators.

The air wing itself will support more than seventy-five aircraft of various types including fixed-wing and rotary-wing systems. This will allow the USS Enterprise to retain the capabilities enjoyed by many American carriers over the years, able to mount air defense, strike, rescue and enforcement sorties anywhere in the world. Resupply at-sea can be handled by vessels or helicopter and fixed-wing transports. The flight deck will measure 1,092 feet by 256 feet and feature multiple elevators to access the hangar deck below. An Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) will replace the steam catapults of old. The arresting gear will also be of an all-new design. There will also be improved support for launching Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), a noticeably emerging trend in naval warfare.

Point self-defense will be through a digital fire control system with management of RIM-162 ESSM and RIM-116 RAM anti-aircraft missile launchers. Close-in defense will be through 2 x 20mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs).

  • US Navy 2030 and Beyond: 6: Cultural change and Allied help

    24:40

What will the United States Navy look like in the future? The United States Marine Corps is optimizing for conflict in the seas off China by 2030, but the USN's vision is not so clear. Here a panel of four retired senior naval officers and current advisers discuss finding efficiencies through cultural change and allies.

In this first part, Vice Admiral (retd.) Robert Thomas introduces the panel and sets the scene, and Captain (retd.) Gerry Roncolato kicks off the fundamental questions on the future of war.

    The Panel:

    1. Vice Admiral Robert Thomas retired from the U.S. Navy in January 2017 after 38 years of Naval Service. He then accepted an appointment as a Senior Research Fellow with the University of California’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC). He is also a full time faculty member at UC San Diego’s Graduate School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS).
Vice Admiral Thomas’ last operational tour was in command of the U.S. 7th Fleet from July 2013 to September 2015. His final assignment before retiring was Director Navy Staff in the Pentagon. Vice Admiral Thomas graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He holds a Master of Arts in National Security Studies from the National War College in Washington, DC.

    2. Gerry Roncolato is a retired Navy Captain. He served in surface warships, commanding the destroyer USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG 68) and Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Six. Ashore he had several tours in Washington, D.C., including the Navy staff’s Operations, Plans, and Strategy directorate (N3/N5) and the Asia-Pacific Division on the Joint Staff. He currently works as a consultant for Beast Code, LLC, which is building interactive and user-friendly digital twins for the Navy.

    3. Paul Giarra is a retired Navy P-3 pilot, who also served in two aircraft carriers. While in the Navy he was a designated strategic planner, and had a leading role on the CNO’s staff in re-orienting Navy strategic and programmatic priorities at the end of the Cold War. As Senior Country Director for Japan in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, he managed the U.S.-Japan alliance for five years and developed the rationale for the post-Cold War bilateral security relationship. Currently he is the President of Global Strategies & Transformation, a national defense and strategic planning consultancy.

    4. Scott Tait is a retired Navy Captain. He served in warships, commanding USS MUSTIN (DDG 89) and USS ZUMWALT (DDG 1000). Ashore he served on staffs of the US 7th Fleet, US Pacific Fleet, and Joint Staff (J-5 Asia). He is currently the Executive Director of UC San Diego’s National Security Innovation Catalyst and CEO of Pacific Science & Engineering Group.

    5. Bruce Oliver Newsome, Ph.D., crewed M1 Abrams in the National Guard while studying for his PhD in International Relations. He worked as a political scientist at the RAND Corporation - specializing in ground maneuver acquisitions, taught at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom - where he certified in the AFV Design Courses, and has held further full-time faculty positions at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California Berkeley. He now lectures on all things defense, security, and risk at the University of San Diego.

  • Marine-i Discovery Room - Hydrogen, the route to Net-Zero

    2:1:41

Offshore wind with green hydrogen is a major UK opportunity. The UK has outstanding offshore wind resource, with the potential for over 600GW in UK waters, and potentially up to 1000GW, well above the figure of 75-100GW likely to be needed for UK electricity generation by 2050. This opens the possibility of growing the offshore wind industry beyond electricity requirements, producing green hydrogen for export as offshore wind costs continue to fall.

The industrial base is strong. The UK has an established industry base to build on with the offshore industry itself, the oil and gas industry with BP and Shell developing Net Zero compatible strategies, and companies on the demand side such as Johnson Matthey, Wright Bus, Alexander Dennis, Baxi, and Worcester Bosch.

Our universities provide the underpinning science and engineering for electrolysers, fuel cells, and hydrogen, and are home to world-leading capability in these areas.

Marine-i will be hosting this Discovery Room on ZOOM, facilitated by Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. Speakers will present the strategy for the UK’s Hydrogen Roadmap, discuss some of the leading projects demonstrating generation, distribution and storage. University of Exeter will discuss their research into electrolysers and energy storage. The purpose is to provide an overview of the latest thinking and providing the opportunity for SMEs to get involved and understand where there are market gaps and opportunities.

  • US Navy 2030 and Beyond: 5: Future procurement and wargaming

    20:41

What will the United States Navy look like in the future? The United States Marine Corps is optimizing for conflict in the seas off China by 2030, but the USN's vision is not so clear. Here a panel of four retired senior naval officers and current advisers discuss the future of naval warfare.

    SUMMARY
    =======
Niue ( NEW-ay; Niuean: Niuē) is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) northeast of New Zealand, east of Tonga, south of Samoa, and west of the Cook Islands. Niue's land area is about 261 square kilometres (101 sq mi) and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was about 1,600 in 2016. The island is commonly referred to as The Rock, which comes from the traditional name Rock of Polynesia. Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands. The terrain of the island has two noticeable levels. The higher level is made up of a limestone cliff running along the coast, with a plateau in the centre of the island reaching approximately 60 metres (200 feet) high above sea level. The lower level is a coastal terrace approximately 0.5 km (0.3 miles) wide and about 25–27 metres (80–90 feet) high, which slopes down and meets the sea in small cliffs. A coral reef surrounds the island, with the only major break in the reef being in the central western coast, close to Alofi. A notable feature are the many limestone caves near the coast.
Niue, whose capital is the village of Alofi, is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand; and New Zealand conducts most diplomatic relations (though not all) on its behalf. Niueans are citizens of New Zealand, and Queen Elizabeth II is head of state in her capacity as Queen of New Zealand. Between 90–95% of Niuean people live in New Zealand, along with about 70% of the speakers of the Niuean language. Niue is a bilingual country, with 30% of the population speaking both Niuean and English, though the percentage of monolingual English-speaking people is only 11%, while 46% are monolingual Niuean speakers.
Niue is not a member of the United Nations (UN), but UN organisations have accepted its status as a freely-associated state as equivalent to independence for the purposes of international law. As such, Niue is a member of some UN specialised agencies (such as UNESCO, and the WHO), and is invited, alongside the other non-UN member state, the Cook Islands, to attend United Nations conferences open to all states. Niue is subdivided into 14 villages (municipalities). Each village has a village council that elects its chairman. The villages are at the same time electoral districts; each village sends an assemblyman to the Parliament of Niue. A small and democratic nation, Niueans hold legislative elections every 3 years.
In 2003, Niue became the first country in the world to provide state-funded wireless internet to all inhabitants. Niue Island Organic Farmers Association is currently paving way to a Multilateral Environmental Agreement (MEA) committed to making Niue the world's first fully organic nation by 2020. A leader in green growth, Niue is also focusing on solar power provision, with help from the European Union. Niue aims to become 80% renewable by 2025. On the other hand, Niue currently deals with one of the highest rates of greenhouse gas production per capita in the world (behind only Kuwait and Brunei). In 2015, Niue started providing phone landlines to all of its inhabitants. In 2008, Niue became the first country in the world where laptops are provided to all school students. In January 2004, Niue was hit by Cyclone Heta, which caused extensive damage to the island, including wiping out most of the south of the capital, Alofi. The disaster set the island back about two years from its planned timeline to implement the Niue Integrated Strategic Plan (NISP), since national efforts concentrated on recovery.
