Grizzly River - Grizzly Bears Nature Documentary

Fascinating and beautiful documentary on the lives of Grizzly Bears in their river habitat throughout the year. From stalking prey, fishing for salmon, and the role of Alpha Males.

The grizzly bear is any North American subspecies of the brown bear, such as the mainland grizzly (U. a. horribilis), the Kodiak (U. a. middendorffi), the peninsular grizzly (U. a. gyas) and the recently extinct California grizzly (U. a. californicus). Specialists sometimes call the grizzly the North American brown bear because the grizzly and the brown bear are one species on two continents. In some places, some may nickname the grizzly the silvertip for the silvery, grizzly sheen in its fur.
Since the mainland grizzly is so widespread, it is representative and archetypal for the whole subspecific group. Even so, classification is being revised along genetic lines. Its closest relatives are the European cave bear and the polar bear.

Except for females with cubs, grizzlies are normally solitary, active animals, but in coastal areas, grizzlies gather around streams, lakes, rivers, and ponds during the salmon spawn. Every other year, females (sows) produce one to four young (usually two) which are small and weigh only about 500 grams (1 lb). A sow is protective of her offspring and will attack if she thinks she or her cubs are threatened.

  • Majestic Bears of Alaska & British Columbia | Free Documentary Nature

    51:39

Our film journey begins in Alaska's west. We are hoping to find glacier bears in the glacial regions of the Katmai National Park on the Douglas River. At the end of July, brown bears have now arrived to fish for salmon. In the surrounding forests, grizzlies look for berries and fresh, green twigs. The Katmai is Alaska's most volcanic area, and with 15 active volcanoes it is a veritable powder keg, surrounded by glaciers. In the Hook glacier region moose and lynx accompany us. Bald eagles have arrived at the glacial boundary and begin to tear apart their freshly caught prey. At last, we catch sight of a glacier bear. Hungry, he has left the ice region and has been forced down here in search of food, which he satisfies extensively with fresh shoots and berries.
Continuing our film trip, we head for Prince Royal Island in British Columbia. En route, we meet with black bears on their way with their young to fish for salmon. The mother bears have to remain alert to protect their young, as we have spotted some New World porcupines too.
Then, out of the blue, directly in front of us: the Kermode, or spirit bear. He shows no signs of timidity and is only interested in one thing: salmon. Then, a further Kermode appears, enjoying his cranberry dessert, allowing us to approach him, almost too close for comfort. But a black bear arrives on the scene and claims the cranberry bush for itself. After a brief confrontation, the Kermode opts to leave, preferring to focus on salmon fishing. Fascinating footage of this rare species of animal.

  • Katmai Alaska Grizzly Bear Viewing in HD. Kingdom of the Grizzlies with Natural Habitat Adventures

    14:57

Highlights from the 2010 Grizzly expedition season: Kodiak to Katmai with Natural Habitat Adventures.

The Coast of Katmai, on the Alaska Peninsula is the best place in the world to live, if you are a bear. This compilation of highlight scenes shows the incredible qualityof bear viewing, fantastic scenery, and diverse wildlife encountered on these expeditions.
Though seeing wolves on these trips is not as sure as finding bears, the past few years have been exceptional as wolf populations are growing, and they learn that humans in this vast national park will not harm them. We saw wolves on 75% of our expeditions in 2010, many at extremely close distances, and often interacting with bears.

Bears on the coast of Katmai are as numerous as anywhere on the planet. Only coastal brown bears or grizzlies live here, as the habitat is not suitable for black bears.
Hunting has been banned in Katmai National Park for many decades, and the few visitors who travel to this extremely remote and wild region of Alaska coexist with bears with mutual respect. This is likely the world's greatest bear viewing expedition!
This 6 passenger expedition entails exploring a variety of bays and fjords on a vessel, and walking ashore each day to view bears, wolves, and other wildlife, as well as exploring Kodiak Island. Alaska at its greatest!

    42:50

Spirit bears hold a prominent place in the oral traditions of the indigenous peoples of the area. They have also been featured in a National Geographic documentary.

Scientists have found that black bears are not as effective at catching fish as white bears, as the white bears are less visible from the perspective of the fish. While at night, the two colours of bears have similar success rates at catching fish, such as salmon, during the day, the white bears are 30% more effective.

The Kermode bear was named after Francis Kermode, former director of the Royal B.C. Museum, who researched the subspecies and was a colleague of William Hornaday, the zoologist who described it.

A common mispronunciation of Kermode as ker-MOH-dee differs from the actual pronunciation of the Kermode surname, which originates on the Isle of Man and is properly pronounced KER-mode, which is the usual way to pronounce Kermode bear.

Most park visitors are surprised to find out there is hunting inside a national park, and feel that it is contrary to the mission of the park service and its oath to protect natural resources unimpaired for future generations.
The unnecessary death of a grizzly bear inside Grand Teton National Park during the 2012 hunt renewed the call by the public to end this outdated slaughter, and protect endangered animals like Grizzly 399 inside of the national park.

The awe-inspiring brown bear lives in the forests and mountains of northern North America, Europe, and Asia. It is the most widely distributed bear in the world.

These omnivorous giants tend to be solitary animals, except for females and their cubs, but at times they do congregate. Dramatic gatherings can be seen at prime Alaskan fishing spots when the salmon swim upstream for summer spawning. In this season dozens of bears may gather to feast on the fish, craving fats that will sustain them through the long winter ahead. In fall a brown bear may eat as much as 90 pounds (40 kilograms) of food each day, and it may weigh twice as much before hibernation as it will in spring.

  • Giants Bears - WildLife Alaska

    49:52

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is a large bear, approximately the same size as the omnivorous Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi).

A boar (adult male) weighs around 350–700 kg (772–1,543 lb), while a sow (adult female) is about half that size. Although it is the sister species of the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting seals, which make up most of its diet. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time on the sea ice.

    Brown bear:
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a large bear distributed across much of northern Eurasia and North America and is the largest terrestrial carnivoran. There are several recognized subspecies within the brown bear species.

While the brown bear's range has shrunk and it has faced local extinctions, it remains listed as a least concern species by the IUCN with a total population of approximately 200,000. As of 2016, this and the American black bear are the only bear species not classified as threatened by the IUCN. However, the Californian, North African (Atlas bear), and Mexican subspecies were hunted to extinction in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and many of the southern Asian subspecies are highly endangered. The smallest subspecies, the Himalayan brown bear, is critically endangered, occupying only 2% of its former range and threatened by uncontrolled poaching for its parts. The Marsican brown bear in central Italy is believed to have a population of just 30 to 40 bears.

Documentary The Land of Giant Bears, Alaska, Grizzly Paradise
In the far north-west of the American continent stretches a land some one and a half million square kilometres in size. Only six hundred thousand people inhabit this region where the frozen tundra, the coniferous forests and the mountains dominate a landscape which, in some places, has never been trodden by man.

The start of the melt announces the resurgence of life in Alaska. With the vegetation, food returns, and the largest of Alaska's land carnivores, the grizzly bear, awakes from its winter sleep.

The grizzly bear belongs to the same species as the European bear, but its better diet enables it to grow much bigger. Kodiak island has some bears can weigh almost 1,000 kilos and measure 3 metres.

  • Curious Grizzly Bears: The Wild Life by the Sharpys, Alaska 6

    2:15

The Wild Life by the Sharpys: Alaska, Episode 6 features grizzly bears in Katmai National Park. When cubs leave their mothers at about 4-years old, bear guides call them teens because they are very curious, like to play, and tend to get into trouble. In this video, two newly independent teen grizzly siblings approach our group with curiosity. They are about 5 years old. In the most courageous act I've ever seen, Kevin the Grizz charges the young grizzlies with just an unlit road-flare in his hand. Since Katmai is a National Park, guns and pepper-spray are not allowed. When Kevin yells and kicks sand at the bears, the teens retreat. When Kevin turns back to our group, the young grizzlies follow. The retreat and return game goes back and forth for a while. To donate to Katmai National Park and Preserve, go to This is not an instructional video. Avoid close proximity to bears in the wild. The bear camp guides in this video have 40 years of combined experience observing bears at this location. Video by Brian and Krista Sharp.

Documentary The Land of the Giant Bears,Grizzly vs Salmon
With the conditions in their favour, the indefatigable travellers again set off on their journey home. A long time has passed since they descended these same waters on their way to the ocean. Today, they are finally returning to their origins, to once again complete the cycle of life.
Their bodies have now made the necessary changes. Now, they can live in fresh water and are ready to face the next test, the ascent up the river. The most important change is that in their gonads, their sexual glands. They have grown so much that they press against the stomach wall and prevent them from eating. They will have to conquer the rapids, leap up waterfalls and escape from their predators without eating a single thing.

This incredible nutrition explains why the bears here are the largest in the world. After the first desperate days, and with their stomachs now full, the bears have become much more choosy, and carefully select their prey.

  • Time for the Grizzly? A Chris Morgan film

    13:34

Grizzly bears have lived in the North Cascades for 20,000 years. Today, fewer than 10 of them remain. After decades of research, the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies have released proposals to support recovery of this iconic species.

Follow the story of grizzly bear recovery in Montana’s Cabinet Mountains through the lens of ecologist and bear expert Chris Morgan. Grizzly recovery in the Cabinet Mountains, done through science and community involvement, could serve as a model for the North Cascades.

Bringing grizzlies back is possible. We have the science and the proven methods. Now we need the collective will.
