A Journey to the Arctic

x
  • Tour of the Arctic – from Svalbard to Siberia | DW Documentary

    42:26

The Arctic is one of the most fascinating regions on our planet, and one of the most threatened. Two film crews explore its spectacular wilderness in a two-part documentary. Part one takes viewers from Norway’s Svalbard archipelago to Siberia.

The region around the North Pole is one of the greatest and least-known wildernesses in the world, and it’s rapidly changing due to global warming. The retreat of Arctic sea ice can be observed everywhere along the Arctic Circle, presenting those who live there with dramatic changes. This documentary takes viewers on a journey through the Arctic circle and explores those changes.
It begins in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, a place to see one of nature’s most spectacular displays — the northern lights. With the ice retreating, cruise ships can now travel further north than was previously possible. This places a strain on the fragile ecosystem. But more visitors may also mean more awareness about the risks that face the region, and more motivation to protect the Arctic.
But as if often the case, protecting nature in the Arctic is at odds with economic interests. Russia, in particular, is keen to sell Arctic fossil fuels to the rest of world. The film next takes viewers to the gas-rich Yamal Peninsula in northwestern Siberia, where the Russian company Novatek has built the northernmost industrial facility on the globe.

Further East in Yakutia, two noises fill the air: the relentless buzzing of mosquitoes that infest the Siberian tundra in summer, and the steady dripping of the thawing permafrost on the banks of the Kolyma River. The film’s journey ends in Chukotka in the northeast of Russia, a region closer to Alaska than to the Russian capital Moscow.

    ABOUT ME
Hi, My name is Craig Williams and I am a Youtuber and podcaster that also runs!

For years I have tried to work out my ONE THING... My passion in life. My sole purpose! The very thing I was put on this Earth to do and despite adventures and experiences all over the world, I simply could not find the answer...

    Until now.

The only thing that makes time stand still for me is film making. I'm only getting started, but like running... with every film, every upload and every mistake... I am getting better.

ABOUT - Journey to the Arctic Circle
The Journey to the Arctic Circle running documentary is a short film outlining my less than perfect preparations for one of the worlds toughest endurance races. Plagued with injuries and hindered by fitness worries, I embarked on a 230km self-sufficient journey to the Arctic Circle.

Little did I know just how well this race would turn out, but more importantly... I also found my passion in the process.

Thank you for watching and thank you to everyone that I have run with, that has supported my crazy ideas or that encourage me to keep going.

    Craig'o
Ps... Have a great day... because great days make great lives.

I really hope you enjoy this trip of over 1,600 km from Stockholm in Sweden up to Narvik in Norway. A true bucket-list journey, this is nowhere near as expensive as you'd think, and the only barriers you have in taking this trip are managing to brave the cold.

My tip: for snow, head there in April like I did. It's a little above freezing and the thaw is beginning, but it's still truly Arctic - watch the people on quad bikes and snowmobiles in my video! In summer, the snow mostly disappears, leaving behind a rich green landscape. It's still a wonderful, beautiful place, but I rather prefer the snow myself! Don't go in midwinter if you can help it - there's not much daylight at that latitude!

  • Journey to the Arctic - TechKnow

    24:19

The Arctic is warming up at twice the rate of the rest of the globe. Summer sea ice has receded by almost 25 percent since 1979, with the sea change becoming ever more apparent and Arctic-native animals now visibly struggling in their prolonged search for shelter, ice and food.

Offshore oil exploration and increased tourism have also contributed to the speed at which environmental changes are occurring in the Arctic, with the fear of an ice-free summer on the horizon looming over the fate of the area.

These changes have also been spotted on land, with melting permafrost causing entire patches of land and man-made structures to sink as the earth softens.

Proximity to land and resources also presents a challenge, not only in times of emergency on the water, but also in executing the research required to understand and attempt to combat the effects of global warming on the Arctic. This is where the Polar-class icebreakers factor in.

The United States owns only two icebreakers that are able to breach the density of ice formations the Arctic is known for. Weighing it at 16,000 tonnes and with the abilitiy to reach 30,000 horsepower, they are a force to be reckoned with on the open seas.

These vessels are used not only as a coast guard, but also to aide in sceintific studies. Missions often include unmanned vehicles - a safety precaution - including drones and others that explore not only the view from the air, but also what is happening in the water and life under the ice.

Levels of carbon dioxide in the air and the sea, water salinity, temperature, oxygen and chlorophyll blooms - a potentially dangerous situation where algae multiplies and decomposes on the surface of the water, using up oxygen resources from the rest of the sealife - are all deliverables that can be quantified using the unmanned vehicles.

Scientists from the Arctic Domain Awarness Centre at the University of Alaska Anchorage are also working on an 'isotope sniffer' amongst other experiments and unmanned 'drones'. A snout hangs out from the bow of a Polar-class icebreaker as a means of atmospheric sampling, and feeds the information down to isotope analysers below deck, in seconds-long intervals.

The ultimate vision is to understand the effects of potentially environmentally-damaging activity, such as offshore rigging by the Shell oil company, creating technology that can accurately register important data in extreme temperatures and conditions - 'guardians' of the water - without endangering the lives of crew members.

Michael Portillo embarks on a scenic, thousand-mile rail journey from the Swedish capital, Stockholm, to Abisko in the northern reaches of the Arctic Circle. Steered by his 1936 edition of Bradshaw’s Continental Railway Guide, Michael boards a steam train to celebrate Midsummer in Marielund, learns to decorate a Dala horse in Mora and takes an icy dip in one of the country’s 96,000 lakes.

In Stockholm, Michael braves a precarious tour of the city from its rooftops before boarding a heritage tram to get the lowdown on 1930s Sweden from an expert. At the capital’s Royal Institute of Technology, Michael investigates the transport of the future in a near-vacuum tube. He tours Uppsala University and takes Sweden’s 1,300km Inlandsbanan railway, which was completed in 1937, to travel north to Ostersund and Kiruna.

Michael finishes deep in the Arctic Circle at a remote climate research station, where scientists are building on data recorded at the time his guidebook was published. En route, Michael learns why Sweden built the strategic inland railway on which he is travelling. He discovers how the nation created a welfare state, has lunch with traditional Sami people in Vilhelmina and checks into a chilly hotel made of ice.

  • Tour of the Arctic – from Greenland to Alaska | DW Documentary

    42:26

Two film crews explore the spectacular wilderness of the Arctic. The people who live there face dramatic changes. Part two takes viewers from East Greenland to Alaska.

The region around the North Pole is one of the greatest and least-known wildernesses in the world - and it’s rapidly changing due to global warming. 350 people, most of them Inuit, live in Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland. The nearest settlement is on neighboring Iceland. Almost 800 kilometers of Arctic Ocean separate the two islands. The film team accompanies an Inuit family through Scoresby Sound, a fjord system on the eastern coast of Greenland. They travel hundreds of kilometers in small boats through pack ice, passing icebergs as high as skyscrapers. On the way they meet whalers who are hunting for narwhals in summer. In this Inuit culture, narwhal skin and polar bear goulash have ensured survival for thousands of years. Greenpeace and WWF activists want to stop whaling and polar bear hunting - but this poses a threat to the indigenous way of life on Greenland. On the expedition through the world's largest fjord system, the team learns about the consequences of global warming: melting permafrost and a rapid increase in greenhouse gases. The changes are worrying. Some say they have brought benefits to the far north — the ice breaks up earlier and so too does the hunting season. However, the risks outweigh this benefit. The knowledge and way of life that have been passed down from generation to generation may soon be unsustainable.

  • A Journey to the Edge of Russia - the village of Teriberka

    12:19

One of my dreams since moving to Russia has been to see the whole country. Every oblast, every republic, every capital of every state. I also dreamt of seeing all the edges of Russia. I’ve already been to the Far East of Russia, the Caucasus mountains in the south and the exclave of Kaliningrad in the west. Next stop, the north. While visiting Murmansk, the largest city in the arctic circle, I decided to take a trip to the very edge of Russia. Where Russia ends, and Arctic Ocean begins. The part of the Arctic Ocean next to Murmansk is called the Barents Sea. To get to the Barents Sea, and the edge of Russia, one must take a trip via car 150km to a village called Teriberka. Due to Russian laws about the secrecy of their navy, Teriberka is the only place a foreigner can visit on the Barents Sea coast. In the height of winter the road to Teriberka can often be impassable. Teriberka also experiences something called the polar night. From the start of December until the second week of January, the sun never rises. On the day of my trip to Teriberka, not in the height of winter, there was just 3 hours of daylight.

Beautiful pictures of the Inuit people and the arctic region.

The Inuit (pronounced /ˈɪnuːɪt/ or /ˈɪnjuːɪt/; Inuktitut: ᐃᓄᐃᑦ, People) are a group of culturally similar indigenous peoples inhabiting the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada, the United States, and Russia. Inuit is a plural noun; the singular is Inuk. The Inuit languages are classified in the Eskimo-Aleut family.[10] The Inuit live throughout most of the Canadian Arctic and subarctic in the territory of Nunavut; Nunavik in the northern third of Quebec; Nunatsiavut and Nunatukavut in Labrador; and in various parts of the Northwest Territories, particularly around the Arctic Ocean. These areas are known in Inuktitut as the Inuit Nunangat.[15][16] In the United States, Inupiat live on the North Slope in Alaska and on Little Diomede Island. In Russia, they live on Big Diomede Island.

  • LONGEST ANIMAL Migration - Arctic Tern

    5:20

The Arctic Tern, the longest known migration known in the animal kingdom. It was long believed that arctic terns flew about 22,000 miles (35,200 km) on their journey from the Arctic region to Antarctica and back. Recent studies, however, revealed that the birds actually fly much farther. Tiny instruments called geolocators were attached to a number of birds. About the weight of a paper clip, these amazing devices revealed that some terns flew an average of 56,000 miles (90,000 km) on the round-trip—the longest animal migration known. One bird flew nearly 60,000 miles (96,000 km)! Why the revised estimates? No matter where they began their migration, the arctic terns flew an indirect route. As shown in the illustration, a common Atlantic Ocean route took an S shape. The reason? The birds simply take advantage of prevailing wind systems. During their lifetime of about 30 years, terns may travel well over 1.5 million miles (2.4 million km). That is equal to three or four round-trips to the moon! “This is a mind-boggling achievement for a bird of just over 100 grams [3.5 ounces],” said a researcher. What is more, because arctic terns experience the summers at both poles, they see “more daylight each year than any other creature,” states the book Life on Earth: A Natural History.

  • Arctic Vacation Travel Video Guide

    9:45

    Travel video about destination Arctic.
In the Arctic, the circumpolar region of the north, it is necessary to travel by boat as there are no roads in the frozen world around the North Pole. A great way to experience this region is by cruise ship as they use small rubber boats, zodiacs, to access the Arctic’s islands and bays. The island of Spitsbergen owes its name to the jagged mountains of the west coast with its black, bare rock mountains and valleys that contain huge glaciers. Ice streams flow continuously, at the front of which their glacial tongues break loose into the Polar sea. This is the Land of the Polar Bear, the Arctic’s most famous carnivore, a ruthless predator always in search of food. The signs of climate change are everywhere so that the pack ice often becomes porous as a consequence of which the polar bear cannot cover the same areas as in former times. The cries of young gulls at feeding time has woken up a hungry Arctic fox who suddenly gains a healthy appetite for itself but an unhealthy end for a gull or two. This kingdom of freezing cold is the largest wilderness on earth and one of its last natural paradises.

  • THE ROAD TO THE ARCTIC // Hasta Alaska // S05E10

    22:33

The road to the Arctic, is one of the craziest road trips we've ever attempted. But the Dalton Highway is the last stretch of the the Pan-American Highway and one of the most isolated overlanding adventures you can undertake.

Some of you might have seen this journey up to the Arctic Circle on the 'Ice Road Truckers' TV Program'. It really is one heck of a drive, especially in an old VW Bus.

Join us as we traverse the Brooks Range and tackle the Tundra on this drive up to Deadhorse, Alaska and Prudhoe Bay, to see if the mosquitoes really are as bad as they say and to discover what life is like at the edge of the world!

  • Arctic Wolves | A Journey that changed Lives.

Go on a journey to the frozen north with wildlife photographer Ejaz Khan. A journey that changed his life forever. Spotlighting foxes and wolves. These photographs capture the beauty of the Arctic.

Enjoy more Pictures of Wolves at

A LITTLE ABOUT THE ARCTIC WOLF
The fur on the Arctic wolf is as thick and white as it is to help them survive. The extreme cold they live in had them evolve to have two thick layers of fur. The outer layer helps them stay waterproof and trap heat close to the body. This layer also grows thicker in the colder winter months to prepare the arctic wolves for the bitter winds. This enables these animals to stay warm even in the extreme cold and carry on their lives. In addition to their fur, they also have smaller ears than their cousins. This reduces the surface area that heat could possibly escape from, keeping their body temperature warmer.

Additionally, due to the permanently frozen ground, their paws also have to be adapted to give them the best chance at survival. To better grip the earth and also distribute their weight evenly, they have wide paws. Their paws also have padding that gives them a good grip when they walk and insulate their feet.

Our photography sales – online or offline – include a percentage that goes towards these organizations to help them do the work they do, so future generations can enjoy the wildlife we have inherited.

Ejaz Khan's most recent expedition has brought him to the Arctic. With temperatures going down to -56 degrees and winds blowing up to 60 miles per hour, his tent was the only shelter he had. No one was around, just him and his guide. He says it was one of the most challenging expeditions he has ever had, after this trip he says Norway was a piece of cake. In the Arctic, days after not being able to find the Arctic Wolf, he decided to pack it in and leave for the 7 to 8 hour trip on the snowmobile back to town. 30 minutes into the trip is when the wolves were walking towards him, that’s when the magic happened and he achieved great images of the Arctic Wolves.

  • ICE MOTION: Journey through the melting Arctic | Trailer | Documentary | Climate Change | 2019

    1:18

WATCH FULL MOVIE ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO –

How is the Arctic changing in the age of a global warming? Is it possible to adapt to these changes? Why do we need to listen to scientists?

These are very topical questions that this documentary is trying to answer.

Jakub Witek, the filmmaker, accompanies scientific expedition to western Spitsbergen during fieldwork and works conducted on the Oceania vessel and Magnus Zaremba polar yacht. Researchers observed arctic glaciers, which react quickly to changing climatic conditions. They are also looking for any organisms that appear in places from which the glacier withdrew to understand the processes associated with global warming.

The film takes viewers into the melting Arctic and lets them explore the beauty of its changing landscape during the warmest Summer ever. And all this with the accompaniment of beautiful, immersive music.
