    Does the Universe have an edge? Where does space end? And what's beyond that point? The truth is we don’t know it. Not yet anyway. So let's imagine what a journey to the end of space would be like! Okay, year 2236. Space exploration is flourishing, and astronauts are the most respected professionals in the Solar System. Yet despite all technological advances, no sign of extraterrestrial life has been observed. Or rather, wasn’t… until two years ago.

    The GSA — Global Space Agency — registered a repeating signal like no other. It was coming from a galaxy billions of light years away and moving. The decision was made to construct a one-of-a-kind spaceship, exceeding the speed of light, to explore the signal. But to reach its full speed, it has to be piloted manually. And these four individuals are now going on board the ship for the most important mission in history… perhaps never to come back.

    What will happen to us in the next few hundred years? Or a thousand? How will the Universe end? Nobody knows for sure, but we can gather all the existing theories together and find it out. Just a century from now humans will be the first living species outside Earth that we know of. In 1,000 years, humanity will accept technology not only in their lives but inside their bodies too. Ever heard about cyborgs? That’s exactly what every other human being will become in the future.

    100,000 years in the future — and many of the constellations we know will become unrecognizable because of the natural movement of stars. At nearly the same time, Earth will celebrate the distant anniversary by a supervolcanic eruption, with hot magma and volcanic ash covering thousands upon thousands of square miles of land...

    SUMMARY:
    - In 100 years, technology will leap forwards, and we’ll all become part of a web larger than the Internet. We’ll also finally start colonizing nearby planets, most likely Mars.
    - And here goes… 10,000 years from today. Antares, the red supergiant star that is fifteenth brightest in our night sky, will explode in a supernova.
    - 100,000 years in the future — and many of the constellations we know will become unrecognizable because of the natural movement of stars.
    - In 500,000 years, our planet will be struck with a huge boulder from the sky: an asteroid of about a half mile in diameter. If humans don’t find a way to avoid the impact, it will cause mass destructions on Earth.
    - In 1 million years, two out of four moons of Uranus will collide with each other, causing chaos on the planet.
    - Just 400,000 years later, Phobos, one of Mars’s two satellites, will break apart because of increasing gravity, and the red planet will have its own set of rings, just like Saturn.
    - 110 million years from now is when the Sun will become 1% brighter. It will change the climate on every planet in the Solar system, ever so slightly making it hotter and hotter still.
    - 4 billion years from now the Milky Way galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy.
    - In 7.9 billion years, the Sun will become super-inflated and turn into a red giant, swallowing the closest planets — including the scalding hot piece of rock that was once Earth.
    - In 100 billion years, the Universe will stretch so far and so fast that galaxies will become invisible from each other’s perspective.
    - In 1 trillion years, new stars will stop appearing in space.
    - In 100 trillion years, the Degenerate Era will begin. With no fuel to feed the new stars, they will simply stop forming at all, even if some tried at first.
    - In 120 trillion years, only white and brown dwarf stars will remain where normal stars have once been.
    - In 1 quadrillion years, all planets will be thrown out of their orbits and sent drifting in the cold, dark outer space.
    - 1 quintillion years, and things that once were stars will also become ejected from their galaxies, wandering the empty Universe for the rest of their time.
    - Now, for quintillions of quintillions of years, there will be nothing; this period is called the Dark Era, and time won’t matter at this point.
    - The false vacuum has just inflated and heated up to extreme temperatures, exploding in the empty space and filling it with new energy.
    - Giving life to the new universe — and possibly not even a single one. You know this event as the Big Bang. That’s how our Universe was born, and how it will probably be reborn after billions upon billions of years.

Remarkably, there is a trick that might allow humans to accomplish this feat - join us today as we step onboard the constantly accelerating spaceship!

    SUMMARY:
    - These signals are some of the weirdest phenomena of the Universe. They are pulses of radio waves which come from far outside the Milky Way, our home galaxy. Each burst is only millisecond-long.
    - In August 2017, the construction of the CHIME Telescope was finished. This name stands for Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment. The evolutionary telescope is situated at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia, Canada.
    - The telescope has extensive frequency coverage (from 400 to 800 MHz) and a large field of view (more than 200 square degrees). This makes CHIME the one-of-a-kind telescope for detecting fast radio bursts.’
    - These 13 signals might have appeared in some turbulent regions of their home galaxies, for example, somewhere close to a black hole or near some high-density supernova remnants.
    - At the moment, the research team can do nothing but watch the region of the sky where the signals have come from with the help of CHIME and other radio telescopes. They need to figure out if single and repeating radio bursts are coming from different objects or not.
    - One of the possibilities can be two colliding neutron stars. Dr. Shriharsh Tendulkar, an astronomer from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, is sure that this is the most plausible explanation.
    - Some experts believe that fast radio bursts may occur when a neutron star falls into a black hole. Others are sure that this happens when a black hole gets hit by dark matter.
    - There's also a group of scientists who think that the source of fast radio bursts may be a spinning neutron star.
    - A blitzar is a spinning neutron star which can't bear its own weight anymore and after collapsing, forms a new black hole.
    - The existence of the repeaters makes some people believe that they are the product of an alien civilization. Those who support this idea consider the signals to be the proof of extra-terrestrial activity.

    We start in 2019 and travel exponentially through time, witnessing the future of Earth, the death of the sun, the end of all stars, proton decay, zombie galaxies, possible future civilizations, exploding black holes, the effects of dark energy, alternate universes, the final fate of the cosmos - to name a few.

    This is a picture of the future as painted by modern science - a picture that will surely evolve over time as we dig for more clues to how our story will unfold. Much of the science is very recent - and new puzzle pieces are still waiting to be found.

    To me, this overhead view of time gives a profound perspective - that we are living inside the hot flash of the Big Bang, the perfect moment to soak in the sights and sounds of a universe in its glory days, before it all fades away. Although the end will eventually come, we have a practical infinity of time to play with if we play our cards right. The future may look bleak, but we have enormous potential as a species.

    The nearest black hole is 1,011 light-years away. This black pearl was found in the solar system HR 6819. It was hidden in orbit with two other stars, which you can see with the human eye. Scientists have been studying this system since the 80s, but this winter, it revealed its main secret. This particular black hole is considered relatively small. But despite this, its mass is four times bigger than our Sun, and it’s 2,500 light-years closer to Earth than the next nearest black hole.

    If we were to make a model where the Earth’s distance to the Sun was only .05 inches, you would have to travel about 4 miles to get to this black hole. But our galaxy, the Milky Way, is about 100,000 light-years wide. So the distance of 1,011 light-years doesn’t seem that long in comparison. But before you jump inside this black giant, you should understand that a journey to such a dangerous object as a black hole is a one-way ticket...

  • Parallel Lines Might Meet at the End of the Universe | 360 VR

    What is the shape of the Universe? We’re used to thinking that the Universe was born in the Big Bang. But we also forget that it’s just a theory, and just like any other theory about the beginning of everything, the Big Bang theory has its flaws. For example, we have absolutely no idea why it happened in the first place and what possibly could have caused it. Was there another Universe that was constricting into a dot before exploding once again?

    Another huge problem with the Big Bang is that the Big Bang didn’t explode in a normal fashion, and instead produced the Universe that is, as far as we know, flat. Even if it has the slightest curvature, that’s not a sphere-shaped Universe you would’ve expected from the Big Bang. Yes, scientists largely agree that the Universe is flat! How is that possible? Let's try to figure out!

    Today, I'm setting off on a journey toward the nearest black hole. But don't worry - I'll keep you in the know by live-streaming my entire adventure! I'll have someone to talk to during the flight, and he can help me if things get really tough! My travel buddy's name is Liam. Liam is a robot with artificial intelligence.

    Space distances are seriously long. That's why traveling there would take way more time than you'd like to spend on the road! For example, Voyager 1, a space probe launched in 1977, was traveling out of the Solar System at a speed of 40,000 miles per hour. If my spacecraft moved at the same speed, it would take me a whole 77,000 years to get to the nearest star! But luckily, my spaceship is much faster than that. So let the journey begin!

    SUMMARY:
    - The International Space Station is the most expensive single object in the world. This money would buy you 250 Boeing 747s or two Louvre's with all the paintings and artwork inside!
    - Among satellites, there are low and high flyers. And while the lowest flying ones move approximately 1,250 miles away from Earth, the highest reach 22,000 miles into space.
    - Space distances are so vast, you can't even calculate them in miles. That's why scientists use the term astronomic unit, which equals 93 million miles – the distance from the sun to Earth. That means I'm 9.3 billion miles away from our planet!
    - There's another trial ahead - the Oort Cloud. That means two things: first - we're on the outskirts of the Solar System; and second - we'll have to get through a cloud of icy objects orbiting the Sun at a distance of a 100,000 astronomic units!
    - We're heading out of the Solar System just one-tenth of a light-year later. By the way, if you were trying to reach this point by car, the trip would take you more than 19 million years.
    - In the center of pretty much every galaxy, there’s a supermassive black hole. For example, one is sitting right at the heart of our Milky Way galaxy, about 27,000 light-years away from Earth.
    - A black hole is an eerie place where those laws of physics we studied at school stop working. If a massive star runs out of its star fuel, it becomes super-dense and buckles under its own weight, collapsing inward and bringing space-time along.
    - I won't go further than the horizon, aka the point of no return. Once an object crosses this invisible line, it can't turn back, even if it's changed its mind.
    - Liam says he's ready to start his journey. There he goes, bravely plunging toward the black hole while I'm recording everything that's happening to him.
    - Liam just froze, as if a gigantic finger has pressed a pause button, and now, some force is stretching him thinner and thinner!
    - It's the infamous spaghettification, which happens in a super-strong non-homogenous gravitational field!
    - Liam is in a state of free-fall now, and feels no more stretching, scalding radiation, or gravity. Unfortunately, the connection is lost, and he can't tell me anything about the inside of the black hole.

In fact, even our own galaxy and the billions of galaxies we can see are traveling towards this edge of the universe, and recently it was found that the universe is accelerating… pulled on by some unseen and mysterious force.

  • An Epic Journey to a Black Hole to Give You Goosebumps

    A black hole is a mysterious place where the laws of physics people are familiar with stop working. Black holes appear when massive stars collapse under their own weight. The gravitational field of the newly formed object is so powerful that even light, including X-rays, can't escape it. Every black hole has an invisible line-in-the-sand. Cross it - and you won't be able to escape, even if you're a beam of light. Beyond the point of no return, the gravity is just too strong. It's called the event horizon.

    There's a black hole about 1,000 light-years away from the Earth. That's almost 6 thousand, million, million miles. On the scale of the Universe, it's right next door. More than four times the mass of our Sun, this medium-sized monster is surrounded by streams of gas. There are two stars nearby. Scientists think this newly discovered black hole might be the nearest to Earth. It’s also the only system with a black hole visible to the unaided eye. Good news - you're going to visit it right now!

    SUMMARY:
    - The crust isn't really that thick. It’s roughly 21 miles thick and is made up of basaltic rocks that are under the sea, and granitic rocks that make up the continents.
    - Nile Crocodiles dig the deepest burrows among all animals, so you can find them at 39 feet under ground.
    - There are whole underground cities with shelters and catacombs in different countries. The deepest of them lies at 278 feet under Cappadocia in Turkey.
    - Continental crust is about 2 billion years old and it covers about 40 percent of the Earth (yeah, the rest is oceanic crust).
    - In 2004, a half-marathon was organized in the Bochnia Salt Mine in Poland. It was the deepest half-marathon ever – you don’t often see people running at a depth of 695 feet after all.
    - The Earth’s crust serves as an electric blanket that covers the mantle. It’s rich in the radioactive elements uranium, thorium, and potassium, which produce heat!
    - The oceanic crust is never too far, and its average depth is 4.3 miles. It covers around 60 percent of the surface of our planet, and is thinner, denser and younger than the continental crust.
    - The pressure is getting more and more extreme, and it’s getting colder and colder down here. This is the deepest point where earthquakes are born – the ones that come from here are rare, and get pretty weak by the time they’ve traveled 435 miles up to the surface.
    - At 1,814 miles deep, the mantle ends and the outer core begins. It’s a sunless sea of super hot liquid metal that’s about the size of Mars.
    - Once every several thousand years, something happens in this layer: the magnetic poles reverse, and north and south change places.
    - At 2,750 miles, the inner core welcomes you! It’s the hottest, innermost part of the planet.
    - The inner core is nearly the size of the Moon, and makes up 2 per cent of the Earth’s mass.
    - Not so long ago, British scientists found out that the inner core is relatively young – probably somewhere between 500 and 1,000 million years old, and that’s nothing in terms of Earth science.
    - Now, for those of you who are thinking of packing your bags to go see the Earth’s core, I have some not-so-good news: it’s technically not possible yet, because there’s no way to survive the pressure and extreme heat that are waiting down there.

    Observable universe
    The observable universe is a spherical region of the universe comprising all matter that can be observed from Earth or its space-based telescopes and exploratory probes at the present time.
    Beyond our observable Universe lies the unobservable Universe, which ought to look just like the part we can see. The way we know that is through observations of the cosmic microwave background and the large-scale structure of the Universe.

    Solar System
    The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the objects that orbit it, either directly or indirectly. Of the objects that orbit the Sun directly, the largest are the eight planets, with the remainder being smaller objects, the dwarf planets and small Solar System bodies.

    Mercury Planet
    Mercury is the smallest and closest planet to the sun in the Solar System. Its orbit around the Sun takes 87.97 Earth days, the shortest of all the planets in the Solar System.

    Venus Planet
    Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. As the second-brightest natural object in Earth's night sky after the Moon, Venus can cast shadows and can be, on rare occasion, visible to the naked eye in broad daylight.

    Earth Planet
    Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only astronomical object known to harbor life.

    Mars Planet
    Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, being larger than only Mercury. In English, Mars carries the name of the Roman god of war and is often referred to as the Red Planet.

    Asteroid belt
    The asteroid belt is a torus-shaped region in the Solar System, located roughly between the orbits of the planets Jupiter and Mars, that is occupied by a great many solid, irregularly shaped bodies, of many sizes but much smaller than planets, called asteroids or minor planets.

    Jupiter Planet
    Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two-and-a-half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined.

    Saturn Planet
    Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is a gas giant with an average radius of about nine times that of Earth. It only has one-eighth the average density of Earth; however, with its larger volume, Saturn is over 95 times more massive.

    Uranus Planet
    Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. Its name is a reference to the Greek god of the sky, Uranus, who, according to Greek mythology, was the grandfather of Zeus and father of Cronus. It has the third-largest planetary radius and fourth-largest planetary mass in the Solar System.

    Neptune Planet
    Neptune is the eighth and farthest-known Solar planet from the Sun. In the Solar System, it is the fourth-largest planet by diameter, the third-most-massive planet, and the densest giant planet. It is 17 times the mass of Earth, slightly more massive than its near-twin Uranus.

    Kuiper belt
    The Kuiper belt, occasionally called the Edgeworth–Kuiper belt, is a circumstellar disc in the outer Solar System, extending from the orbit of Neptune to approximately 50 AU from the Sun. It is similar to the asteroid belt, but is far larger – 20 times as wide and 20–200 times as massive.

    Voyager 1
    Voyager 1 is a space probe that was launched by NASA on September 5, 1977. Part of the Voyager program to study the outer Solar System, Voyager 1 was launched 16 days after its twin, Voyager 2.

    Oort cloud
    The Oort cloud, sometimes called the Öpik–Oort cloud, first described in 1950 by Dutch astronomer Jan Oort, is a theoretical cloud of predominantly icy planetesimals proposed to surround the Sun at distances ranging from 2,000 to 200,000 au.

    Alpha Centauri
    Alpha Centauri is the closest star system and closest planetary system to Earth's Solar System at 4.37 light-years from the Sun. The name is Latinized from α Centauri, and abbreviated Alpha Cen or α Cen.

    Milky Way
    The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our Solar System, with the name describing the galaxy's appearance from Earth: a hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars that cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye.

    Laniakea Supercluster
    The Local Supercluster, Local SCl, or Laniakea Supercluster, is the galaxy supercluster that is home to the Milky Way and approximately 100,000 other nearby galaxies.

  • Stephen Hawking’s 7 Predictions of Earth’s Demise in the Next 200 Years

    What will happen to our planet in the next 200 years? The most famous scientist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, who has made profound and inspiring discoveries, predicted an extremely dark and pessimistic future to the Earth and its inhabitants. Here are some of Hawking’s most terrifying predictions on how and when our world will meet its demise.
    Since scientists started toying with genetically engineered viruses to treat human illnesses, they’ve also discovered other possible uses for them. Nowadays, pharmacists are even combining several deadly viruses into a single shot and doing some weird stuff with DNA mixing.
    Hawking was a firm believer in extraterrestrial life, and he was convinced that they will eventually invade our planet. And no, unfortunately, they probably won’t come in peace. In his final work, A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation, completed just two weeks before he died, Hawking predicted that our universe will eventually fade into darkness as all the stars run out of energy.
    Although Hawking's life basically depended on artificial intelligence, he didn't trust it at all. He once said that it might just be “the worst invention in the history of our civilization” because it’ll probably replace humans altogether.
    Hawking added that global warming will make the conditions on Earth similar to those on Venus. To save ourselves from problems like overpopulation (and the scarcity of resources that comes with it), pandemics, and pollution, we have to discover new worlds and become a multi-planetary species.

    - Earth will be struck by a gigantic asteroid 3,280 feet in diameter about 500,000 years from now. The crater from this asteroid will be no smaller than 250 miles across.
    - If anybody’s still living on Earth in 1,000,000 years, they’ll have to face a huge threat around this time. A supervolcano will go off, covering an area of 720 cubic miles with expelled magma.
    - As 2 million years pass, the Grand Canyon has slowly been deteriorating, turning into a valley rather than a huge canyon. Actually, the planet looks completely different on the whole.
    - Mars will collide with Phobos, its own moon, 50 million years from today, and this will cause some pretty serious damage to the red planet.
    - Another million years later, our planet will be hit with a lethal burst of radiation. This will be the result of a distant star about 6,500 light years away from Earth dying and exploding into a supernova.
    - Another problem will be the ever-increasing luminosity and power of the Sun. It’ll cause the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere to drop down to such levels that photosynthesis won't be possible anymore.
    - 1 billion years from now, the force of the Sun will increase by 10%. The temperature on the surface of the planet will rise to an average of 117°F.

    December 19, 1972... the splashdown of the Apollo 17 crew capsule marked the end of the golden age of manned spaceflight. The Mercury.... Gemini... and Apollo programs had proven that we could send people into space... To orbit the Earth.... Fly out beyond our planet... Then land on the moon and walk among its ancient crater.

    The collective will to send people beyond our planet faded in times of economic uncertainty, war, and shifting priorities. And yet, just five years after Apollo ended, scientists launched a new vision that was just as profound and even more far-reaching.

    It didn't all go smoothly. Early computer problems threatened to doom Voyager 2. Then its radio receiver failed, forcing engineers to use a back up. Now, after more than three and a half decades of successful operations, the twin spacecraft are sending back information on their flight into interstellar space. Along the way, they have revealed a solar system rich beyond our imagining.

    The journey was made possible by a rare alignment of the planets, a configuration that occurs only once every 176 years. That enabled the craft to go from planet to planet, accelerating as they entered the gravitational field of one, then flying out to the next. The Voyagers carried a battery of scientific equipment to collect data on the unknown worlds in their path. That included a pair of vidicom cameras, and a data transfer rate slower than a dialup modem.

    - At 10 and 7 micrometers, you’ll find white and red blood cells, respectively.
    - Two things that are similar in size and you won’t believe it: a clay particle and an E. coli microbe, and they’re both 2 micrometers in diameter.
    - Now, a little further we meet the largest virus. It’s called Megavirus, and it’s just 440 nanometers in size.
    - 200 nanometers is the size of another virus called bacteriophage. If you translate its name from Greek, you’ll find out that it feeds on bacteria.
    - Pushing harder, we go down to 3 nanometers, which is the width of a DNA strand. Don’t let its width fool you, though: the length of its strands is simply enormous.
    - Electrons haven’t been properly measured because they’re just too small for that. Anyway, though, the classical model of measurement says an electron is about 5 femtometers in size.
    - Protons and neutrons, the other two main parts of an atom, are 5 times smaller than electrons!
    - A quark is a particle that makes up protons and neutrons in an atom’s core. There are six types of them, and they all have different properties.
    - A strange quark is about half as small as the up and down quarks, yet it’s 50 times as heavy!
    - At 100 zeptometers, we see charm quarks. They’re even more massive than strange ones, but at least their existence is not questioned.
    - Next up are bottom quarks with the size of just 30 zeptometers. Not a lot can be said about these tiny guys: they have a negative charge and they quickly transform into other, bigger types of quarks.
    - And finally, the sixth type is top quarks. Their size is 100 yoctometers (yet another part per thousand added), and, against all logic, they’re the most massive of all quarks.
    - But even that’s not the end of it, and there are particles even smaller than top quarks. One of them is a neutrino, measuring about 1 yoctometer.
    - The string theory suggests lots of possibilities, and one of those is that a string is one-dimensional itself, but its vibrations take it to all the other dimensions.
    - And the second thing on this level is believed to be quantum foam. It exists according to another theory, and it makes up the whole space-time.

  • When Will Time End?

    The answer to this question may depend on whether Stephen Hawking was right in his theory that describes how black holes shed mass and eventually decay. Time is flying by on this busy, crowded planet as life changes and evolves from second to second. At the same time, the arc of the human lifespan is getting longer: 67 years is the global average, up from just 20 years in the Stone Age.

    Modern science provides a humbling perspective. Our lives, indeed even that of the human species, are just a blip compared to the Earth, at 4.5 billion years and counting, and the universe, at 13.7 billion years.

    It now appears the entire cosmos is living on borrowed time. It may be a blip within a much grander sweep of time. When, we now ask, will time end?

    Our lives are governed by cycles of waking and sleeping, the seasons, birth and death. Understanding time in cyclical terms connects us to the natural world, but it does not answer the questions of science.

    What explains Earth's past, its geological eras and its ancient creatures? And where did our world come from? How and when will it end? In the revolutions spawned by Copernicus and Darwin, we began to see time as an arrow, in a universe that's always changing.

    The 19th century physicist, Ludwig Boltzmann, found a law he believed governed the flight of Time's arrow. Entropy, based on the 2nd law of thermodynamics, holds that states of disorder tend to increase.

    From neat, orderly starting points, the elements, living things, the earth, the sun, the galaxy. are all headed eventually to states of high entropy or disorder. Nature fights this inevitable disintegration by constantly reassembling matter and energy into lower states of entropy in cycles of death and rebirth.

    Will entropy someday win the battle and put the breaks on time's arrow? Or will time, stubbornly, keep moving forward?

    We are observers, and pawns, in this cosmic conflict. We seek mastery of time's workings, even as the clock ticks down to our own certain end. Our windows into the nature of time are the mechanisms we use to chart and measure a changing universe, from the mechanical clocks of old, to the decay of radioactive elements, or telescopes that measure the speed of distant objects.

    Our lives move in sync with the 24-hour day, the time it takes the Earth to rotate once. Well, it's actually 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds if you're judging by the stars, not the sun. Earth got its spin at the time of its birth, from the bombardment of rocks and dust that formed it. But it's gradually losing it to drag from the moon's gravity.
