    Space Race to the Moon:

    00:00 Mars
Early in the life of the solar system Mars appears to have had Earth-like conditions. Planetary researchers have been targeting Mars to gain insight into how our own planet developed.
This episode looks at the work of the probes orbiting Mars and the rovers exploring its surface.

    25:56 Saturn
The ringed planet is of immense interest to researchers who believe that Saturn’s ring system will share similarities with the proto-planetary disc from which the solar system evolved.

    Lyrics:
We all come from a place
    The entire human race
    Depends upon our planet
    Racing through outer space
    And there are eight planets
    That orbit around the sun
    Come on, we’ll introduce you
And name them one by one:

    Chorus
    Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
    Jupiter, Saturn
    Uranus, Neptune

    Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
    Jupiter, Saturn
    Uranus, Neptune

    Mercury:
I’m Mercury, the smallest planet, you see
You humans could never live on me
My atmosphere’s too thin, and I orbit too fast
    My days are long

    Star:
About 60 earth days as a matter of fact

    Venus:
I am Venus, my atmosphere’s super hot
I spin backwards in a way the earth does not
I’m closest to the earth in distance and size
I have no moons, I hope you can sympathize

    Earth:
I’m earth, the planet that you’re on, ya know
I’m terrestrial, but covered in H20
I collide with things that I can’t avoid
But my atmosphere protects me from meteoroids

    Mars:
I’m Mars and you can jump higher on me,
Because I have a third of earth’s gravity
I hear you plan to visit soon
I’ll be your first destination since the moon

    Jupiter:
I’m Jupiter, with my 79 moon crew
    Like Io and S/2003…

    Moons:
    J 2!

    Jupiter:
Yea, you could say I have a pretty large girth
Here’s a storm twice the size of yo momma,
    Earth

    Moons:
    Ohhh!

    Saturn:
My name’s Saturn, check out my pretty rings
These rings are a few of my favorite things
I’m a giant made of hydrogen and helium
And please, stop hitting me with things

    Uranus:
My name’s Uranus, and I’m an ice giant

    Neptune:
    That’s dope!

    Uranus:
I was the first planet found with a telescope
I rotate backwards, and on my side
    I smell like rotten eggs,
But that’s just the hydrogen sulfide

    Neptune:
I’m Neptune, I’m the windiest planet around
    I’ve got supersonic winds
    That’s faster than sound
An ice giant with 14* moons
And a dark vortex that may go away soon

    Pluto:
I’m Pluto, and I will not be forgotten!

    Stage Manager:
Pluto, Pluto, Pluto, Pluto… beautiful, but, um… yea, we’ve been over this, and… you’re considered a dwarf planet these days, sooo…

    Pluto:
Gurl, I’m the biggest object in the Kuiper Belt.

    Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
    Jupiter, Saturn
    Uranus, Neptune

    Jupiter:
Sing along, real strong, for the next tune

    Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
    Jupiter, Saturn
    Uranus, Neptune

    Pluto:
    And, I guess, not Pluto

  • Saturn - One Trillion Rings - Oddest Mysteries of the Ringed Planet | boxset 100 Mins Runtime

    1:41:18

Like Jupiter, Saturn is made mostly of hydrogen and helium. Its volume is 755 times greater than that of Earth. Winds in the upper atmosphere reach 1,600 feet (500 meters) per second in the equatorial region. (In contrast, the strongest hurricane-force winds on Earth top out at about 360 feet, or 110 meters, per second.) These superfast winds, combined with heat rising from within the planet's interior, cause the yellow and gold bands visible in the atmosphere.

Saturn's ring system is the most extensive and complex in the solar system, extending hundreds of thousands of kilometers from the planet. In the early 1980s, NASA's two Voyager spacecraft revealed that Saturn's rings are made mostly of water ice. They also found braided rings, ringlets, and spokes, dark features in the rings that circle the planet at different rates from that of the surrounding ring material. Material in the rings ranges in size from a few micrometers to several tens of meters, and the size and structure of the rings are partly a product of the gravitational influence of several of Saturn's moons, known as shepherd moons. Two of Saturn's small moons orbit within gaps in the main rings, and the rings are divided into seven sections.

  • What If You Jumped Into Saturns Rings?

    6:37

Since its discovery in 1610 by Galileo, the rings of Saturn have enchanted us for centuries. Remarkably, we've visited Saturn before. Stunning photographs taken from the Cassini space probe have revealed that Saturn's rings are much more complex than you might think. So what would it be like to actually go in person? How long would it take you to travel to Saturn? What would you see along the way? Could you survive in Saturn's rings?

  • Apollo 11’s ‘third astronaut’ reveals secrets from dark side of the moon | 60 Minutes Australia

    13:11

This year marks the 50th anniversary of that remarkable feat of technology and daring. And while the moonwalkers, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, dominate our memories of the moon landing, there’s a third astronaut who deserves his place in history. Michael Collins piloted the Apollo 11 command module spacecraft in lunar orbit while his two colleagues collected moon rocks. In a rare interview he tells Sarah Abo if it wasn’t for him, one of our greatest successes would have been a monumental failure.

Firstly, Black hole's gravity will cause complete chaos in our Solar System. Orbits of Planets as well as Comets will be significantly altered. Initially comets and meteorites might start hurtling towards us. Later even the planets might start colliding with each other.
Secondly, even if a gigantic planet like Jupiter comes in the path of the Black hole it will be devoured.
Thirdly, if the Black hole comes near Earth, initially its intense gravitational pull will cause devastating earthquakes and volcanoes. When the Black hole reaches our orbit there will be nothing left but an uninhabitable magma-laden rock.
Lastly, our Sun might offer some resistance to start with. A gravitational tug of war might ensue. But eventually even our beloved Sun will be ripped apart to pieces.

As per Roman Mythology, jupiter is the god of thunder, lightning and storms. It is the largest planet in our solar system and its mass is about 2.5 times the total combined weight of all the other planets in our solar system.

Now, if jupiter would have never existed, it is safe to say that even we would not have existed. This is because some scientists believe that during the initial stages of the formation of our solar system, jupiter's inward migration towards the sun and then subsequent outward migration away from the sun and towards saturn played a vital role in the formation of mercury, venus and earth. Also, since ages jupiter has been protecting earth from collisions with large asteroids and comets. Lastly, more than 70 moons of jupiter would have wandered along the solar system as orphans.

  • Why an ancient Mesopotamian tablet is key to our future learning | Tiffany Jenkins | TEDxSquareMile

    12:52

In our ephemeral, digital world where everything is mediated through a computer screen and summoned by the click of a mouse, ancient objects in dusty old museums are essential to future of learning. In the late eighteenth century, a clay fragment from a piece of the world’s oldest literature overturned orthodoxies and advanced knowledge of the past. It’s an important lesson: evidence from the past will help us to rethink what we know which is never complete. Ancient history and the tangible artifact - something real, not virtual - will take us out of the cloud and bring us back down to earth.

Tiffany Jenkins is an author, academic, and ex-columnist for the Scotsman. She wrote the critically acclaimed Keeping Their Marbles: How The Treasures Of The Past Ended Up In Museums And Why They Should Stay There, published in 2016. She is the writer and presenter of the 2016 BBC Radio 4 series, A Narrative History Of Secrecy. She has been a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, and was previously the director of the Arts and Society Programme at the Institute of Ideas. Her first degree is in art history, her PhD in sociology.

    Learn about the different planets
Now sing along and have some fun

    My name is Mercury
    I’m the second hottest planet
The closest one to the sun
A year on my surface is 88 days
I’m the smallest but I’m lots of fun

    My name is Venus
    I’m the hottest planet
But the second planet from the sun
I’m the brightest planet in our solar system
And I’m too hot for anyone

    My name is Earth
I’m the planet you live on
The Third Planet from the sun
I’m the only planet with organic life
So take care of me because we’re all one

    My name is mars
    I am red in color
The fourth planet from the sun
I have the highest mountain in our solar system
    A volcano named Olympus Mons

There are eight planets in our solar system
We all revolve around the sun
    Learn about the different planets
Now sing along and have some fun

My name is Jupiter I am covered in clouds
I’m the fifth planet from the sun
My giant red spot is a raging storm
As for size, I’m the biggest one

My name is Saturn I am brown in color
I’m the sixth planet from the sun
My outer rings are extremely thin
They’re made of dust and icy chunks

My names Uranus I am blue in color
I’m the seventh planet from the sun
Humans have named me the icy planet
Because I am the coldest one

My name is Neptune I am blue in color
I’m the eighth planet from the sun
I have too many storms in my atmosphere
And I’m the furthest planet from the sun

There are eight planets in our solar system

Unfortunately, they don’t have to hit anything to make us have a really bad time on earth. And there are already stars starting to get very close.

  • National Geographic Journey To The Planets 3 Of 6 Saturn

    45:01

Journey to the Planets aka Voyage To The Planets Have you ever wondered what it would be like to leave Earth? To lose sight of our home planet and go where no human has gone before? Blast-off with Voyage to the Planets: a 6 x 50 minute documentary series exploring the pleasures and pitfalls of travel to the very alien planets of our own Solar System. What strange sights await you? What dangers must you avoid? Voyage to the Planets visits the planets from two very personal perspectives: the direct experience of the people who have sent probes hurtling to all our cosmic neighbours, and the viewpoint of any one of us who might dream of making a trip ourselves. Take a ringside seat to the splendours of the Solar System with Voyage to the Planets: an astronaut's guide to whole new worlds of possibility. A traveller's guide to leaving earth, narrated by Dominic Frisby.

    SATURN
    --------------

Take a trip to Saturn, the planetary pin-up boy, and not only do you get a ringside seat to the greatest spectacle in the solar system, but a close encounter with two extraordinary moons. Tiny Enceladus is making all the headlines as the must-see moon these days. It's the little moon that has it all: enormous geysers of water and ice shooting into space from the south pole point to a warm salty ocean beneath the surface and, perhaps, a real possibility of life. Even more earth-like and yet far more alien is Titan, with a thick atmosphere and weather. Potentially an easier surface to explore even than Mars, this is the only other world we know that you could visit without a spacesuit. Rug up for the cold and fly a hot air balloon in Titanian skies, trek across vast dune fields, or row across a Titanian lake. Just don't fall in or get caught in the rain: it's liquid natural gas out here, not water, and it'll freeze you as hard as rock.

  • Saturns Moon Titan: Another Earth? - Documentary HD

    54:23

Alien life, Saturn's Moon Titan: Another Earth?
Saturn’s largest moon Titan is an extraordinary and exceptional world. Among our solar system’s more than 150 known moons, Titan is the only one with a substantial atmosphere. And of all the places in the solar system, Titan is the only place besides Earth known to have liquids in the form of rivers, lakes, and seas on its surface.
Titan is larger than the planet Mercury and is the second-largest moon in our solar system. Jupiter's moon Ganymede is just a little bit larger (by about 2 percent). Titan’s atmosphere is made mostly of nitrogen, like Earth’s, but with a surface pressure 50 percent higher than Earth’s. Titan has clouds, rain, rivers, lakes and seas of liquid hydrocarbons like methane and ethane. The largest seas are hundreds of feet deep and hundreds of miles wide. Beneath Titan’s thick crust of water, ice is more liquid—an ocean primarily of water rather than methane. Titan’s subsurface water could be a place to harbor life as we know it, while it's surface lakes and seas of liquid hydrocarbons could conceivably harbor life that uses different chemistry than we’re used to—that is, life as we don’t yet know it. Titan could also be a lifeless world.
    Did You Know?
As exotic as Titan might sound, in some ways it’s one of the most hospitable worlds in the solar system. Titan’s nitrogen atmosphere is so dense that a human wouldn’t need a pressure suit to walk around on the surface. He or she would, however, need an oxygen mask and protection against the cold—temperatures at Titan’s surface are around minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 179 Celsius).

Titan’s dense atmosphere, as well as gravity roughly equivalent to Earth’s Moon, mean that a raindrop falling through Titan’s sky would fall more slowly than on Earth. While Earth rain falls at about 20 miles per hour (9.2 meters per second), scientists have calculated that rain on Titan falls at about 3.5 miles per hour (1.6 meters per second), or about six times more slowly than Earth’s rain. Titan’s raindrops can also be pretty large. The maximum diameter of Earth raindrops is about 0.25 inches (6.5 millimeters) while raindrops on Titan can reach diameters of 0.37 inches (9.5 millimeters), or about 50 percent larger than an Earth raindrop.
    Pop Culture
Titan was famously featured in the 2009 film “Star Trek”—the U.S.S. Enterprise comes out of warp in Titan’s atmosphere in order to sneak up on the Romulan ship attacking Earth. Titan also appeared in the film “Star Trek Nemesis,” as well as an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Several other television shows and films feature Titan, such as the film “Gattaca,” and the shows “Futurama” and “Eureka,” as well as the iconic anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” Dozens of video games also feature Titan, as do several comics from Marvel and DC, among others.

Titan has been a setting or subject in dozens of short stories and novels by giants of science fiction including Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, and Isaac Asimov, as well as legendary “Star Trek” actress Nichelle Nichols. Even literary greats such as Kurt Vonnegut have included Titan in their fiction.

    Lyrics:
    My name is Jupiter
    The biggest planet you see
No planet in our solar system
    is bigger than me
    My name is Jupiter
    A windy planet I am
    And I have 62 moons
That rotates around me so free

The Romans gave me my name
after their king of the gods.
Because my size is so massive
In the sea of the star's

    Callisto, Europa, Ganymede, and Io
    Are my four biggest moons
    Found by Galileo

    I’m the fastest spinning planet
    in our solar system
    10 hours equals one day
My days as short as they come

    It takes 12 earth years
for me to orbit the sun
That makes one year on my surface
    that’s a really long run

    My name is Jupiter
    The biggest planet you see
No planet in our solar system
    is bigger than me
    My name is Jupiter
A windy planet I will be
    And I have 62 moons
That rotates around me so free

    89,000 feet
is the amount that I'm wide
I’m so big you could fit
    1,000 Earth's inside

I’ve got a giant red spot
    it is a raging storm
    Scientists think 400 years ago
is when it took its form

    Hydrogen and Helium
make up most of my atmosphere
    I am a gas giant
    And an impressive sphere

    3.13
is the amount of my degree's
That I tilt on my axis
    Let's sing the chorus, please

    My name is Jupiter
    The biggest planet you see
No planet in our solar system
    is bigger than me
    My name is Jupiter
A windy planet I will be
    And I have 62 moons

  • Uranus & Neptune: Crash Course Astronomy #19

    12:19

Today we’re rounding out our planetary tour with ice giants Uranus and Neptune. Both have small rocky cores, thick mantles of ammonia, water, and methane, and atmospheres that make them look greenish and blue. Uranus has a truly weird rotation and relatively dull weather, while Neptune has clouds and storms whipped by tremendous winds. Both have rings and moons, with Neptune’s Triton probably being a captured iceball that has active geology.

  • our solar system ~ jupiter & saturn getting closer | science news feature

    3:08

our solar system: Planets, asteroids, and comets orbit our Sun. They travel around it in a flattened circle called an ellipse. Moons orbit planets. The Sun, of course, is the brightest object that lights up the moon, planets, comets, and asteroids. (NASA)

jupiter & saturn getting closer: Jupiter and Saturn will come closer than they have since the Middle Ages, and it's happening just in time for Christmas. So, there are some things to look forward to in the final month of 2020.
On the night of December 21, the winter solstice, Jupiter and Saturn will appear so closely aligned in our sky that they will look like a double planet. This close approach is called a conjunction. (CNN)
