  • Aliens Are Real, Says Harvard Astronomer

    13:37

When an object called ʻOumuamua' was detected flying through our solar system in 2017, scientists were baffled by its strange behavior. Many said it was just a bizarre space rock, but Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb believes it was most likely a relic of an alien civilization. And he thinks you should believe that too.

In this episode of The Space Show, Motherboard reporter Becky Ferreira speaks with Professor Avi Loeb, chair of Harvard's astronomy department and author of the new book Extraterrestrial.

  • Avi Loeb: The First Interstellar Visitor to Earth

    59:19

In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. That begs the question: what exactly was that object?

Harvard’s top astronomer Avi Loeb joins us via livestream to share his theory: that the object was the first confirmed interstellar visitor to be spotted in our solar system. With insight from his book Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth, he explains all of the reasons the object couldn’t have been an asteroid, and why he believes it was a piece of advance technology created by a distant alien civilization. He further outlines his controversial theory, and explores the implications: for science, for religion, and for the future of our species and our planet. Join us as we aim for the stars with this thrilling discussion, where Loeb asks us to think big and to expect the unexpected.

Abraham (Avi) Loeb is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University, chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy, founding director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative, and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (ITC) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. He also chairs the Advisory Committee for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative, serves as the science theory director for all Initiatives of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, as well as chair of the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies. Author of four books and over 700 scientific papers, Loeb is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Astronautics.

  • The story of Oumuamua, the first visitor from another star system | Karen J. Meech

    13:25

In October 2017, astrobiologist Karen J. Meech got the call every astronomer waits for: NASA had spotted the very first visitor from another star system. The interstellar comet -- a half-mile-long object eventually named `Oumuamua, from the Hawaiian for scout or messenger -- raised intriguing questions: Was it a chunk of rocky debris from a new star system, shredded material from a supernova explosion, evidence of alien technology or something else altogether? In this riveting talk, Meech tells the story of how her team raced against the clock to find answers about this unexpected gift from afar.

  • Do aliens exist? If they did, would we know? | NASA astronomer Michelle Thaller | Big Think

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the biggest questions is whether we are alone in the universe — could there be other intelligent life, besides us, out there? Currently, we don't have any evidence aliens exist.

There may have been a chance for a civilization to start billions of years before life began on Earth — one that is far more advanced, technologically speaking, than us. However, they're not making it very obvious. We have no proof of this.

If such an advanced civilization exists, though, it probably relies on solar energy to fuels its everyday activities.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    MICHELLE THALLER :

Dr. Michelle Thaller is an astronomer who studies binary stars and the life cycles of stars. She is Assistant Director of Science Communication at NASA. She went to college at Harvard University, completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, Calif. then started working for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) Spitzer Space Telescope. After a hugely successful mission, she moved on to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), in the Washington D.C. area. In her off-hours often puts on about 30lbs of Elizabethan garb and performs intricate Renaissance dances. For more information, visit
    NASA.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:

Michelle Thaller: One of the biggest questions is, could there be other life besides us out there in the universe? And I think pretty much every scientist I know feels that there must be. I mean, just simply the numbers-- in our galaxy alone, there are half a trillion stars. And we're now beginning to realize that nearly every star has its own solar system. So at the very least, our single galaxy has hundreds of billions of planets. And some of the stars out there are even older than our sun.

There may have been a chance for a civilization to start billions of years before life began on earth. And if that's true, could there be alien civilizations out there that are far more advanced, technologically, than we are? The unfortunate thing, of course, is we have no evidence of this. They're not making it very obvious. So is there a way that we might be able to see some of, at least, the artifacts of one of these super-civilizations around a distant star? And one of the people who thought about this in a really wonderfully scientific way was a man named Freeman Dyson.

And his name got lent to something called a Dyson sphere. And what a Dyson sphere is-- the idea is that a very advanced civilization would probably need a lot of energy. And one of the best sources of energy is solar energy, the energy of their star that they orbit around. But instead of waiting for that starlight to come all the way to a planet, and to get put into little detectors and solar cells, what if civilization was a little bit more assertive about that, and actually went to the star and built giant collectors around that star? The idea of a Dyson sphere is probably a bit extreme, because some people wondered if a civilization could build an entire shell around a star.

And that shell would collect all of the radiation available from that star that they could use for whatever alien purposes in their super-advanced civilization. A lot of people have suggested that maybe a shell wouldn't be stable. It would be very hard to keep that actually working and orbiting around a star. So maybe you could make a giant grid of huge collectors that would orbit around the star and pick up as much radiation as possible. So a Dyson sphere, or sort of the equivalent of that, there being many, many orbiting detectors around a star, is a wonderful idea in science fiction.

The question is, is there a way you could detect one of these? And for some time, actually, people have wondered, what if you saw a lot of infrared radiation, heat radiation, coming from a star-like object, but you didn't see any visible light? Is it possible that there was a shell of material around that star used to collect all of its energy, and that shell was getting warm because it's around the star, but it wasn't letting any light through? There are very serious scientists who proposed looking for star-like objects that just have heat, but no light associated with them. Unfortunately, we never found any of those either. A couple years ago, however, something very dramatic happened. And it happened as part of the Kepler mission.

This was a mission that was looking for planets aro...

    VOICEOVER (in English):
Oumuamua is the first interstellar object ever observed by humans. It was discovered on 19 October 2017, when it was about 33 million kilometers from Earth, and already heading away from Earth.

Scientists were unable to get a clear picture of how the object looked, but estimate it is roughly a cigar-shaped object that entered the solar system at an unusual orbit and unusually high speed.

Researchers found it hard to determine some of the phenomena displayed by the object.

One scientist, Avi Loeb, published an article in 2018 stating that the object could be a light sail or probe sent intentionally to Earth's vicinity by an alien civilization.

Other astro-physicists were not impressed. In 2019, an international team of researchers published a study and said they found that Oumuamua's properties are consistent with a natural origin.

But Loeb replied in 2020 that the data we gathered on Oumuamua is incomplete. He added that to learn more, we must continue to monitor the sky for similar objects.

According to Forbes magazine, Loeb's new book doubles down on his claim that the object could have been an alien craft.

Top intelligence and government officials in the US have apparently circled a date in their diaries by which time they must submit an unclassified report to Congress about unidentified aerial phenomena, according to the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. The Act requires the UAP Task Force to publicly share a report and security strategies of their findings within 180 days of the 2021 act, Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, this report is expected to present the most substantive US government account and detailed analyses of UAP/UFO data and intelligence to date. What does this all mean? What can we expect from these reports? We’ll walk you through it on today’s IGN Now!

From J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot comes a four-part docuseries uncovering the (in)credible evidence and events that claim the existence of UFOs and other life forms on – or hovering above – Earth. The series will unravel America’s historic obsession with the extraterrestrial. From “Top Gun” pilots being taunted by tic-tac looking flying saucers in the sky, to Gen Z’s rave in the notorious Area 51, to government conspiracy theories, set ups and cover ups, our UFO Project will take us to the ends of the earth – and even a bit farther than that – and back as we tell the twisted tales of sightings, and deception and what this intense and haunting speculation has done to the psyche of the American public and national trust in the government.

    5:29

Harvard scientists think that the first interstellar object detected in our solar system, called “Oumuamua,” could be an alien spacecraft. The scientists sought to explain a quirk in Oumuamua's behavior, which led them to an unusual conclusion. No one knows what Oumuamua is or where it came from, and it's too late to find out for sure.

Why Harvard Scientists Think This Object Is An Alien Spacecraft

  • Where are all the aliens? | Stephen Webb

    13:19

The universe is incredibly old, astoundingly vast and populated by trillions of planets -- so where are all the aliens? Astronomer Stephen Webb has an explanation: we're alone in the universe. In a mind-expanding talk, he spells out the remarkable barriers a planet would need to clear in order to host an extraterrestrial civilization -- and makes a case for the beauty of our potential cosmic loneliness. The silence of the universe is shouting, 'We're the creatures who got lucky,' Webb says.

  • The Search for Primitive and Intelligent Life on Other Planets

    1:22:58

Professor Abraham (Avi) Loeb, chair of the Astronomy department, Harvard University.
Are we alone? Probably not, out of modesty - keeping in mind that about a quarter of all stars host a habitable Earth-size planet. Upcoming searches for primitive life will aim to detect oxygen or methane in the atmospheres of transiting planets. Searches for intelligent life will aim to detect artificial signals in the radio or optical bands, as well as artifacts such as megastructures, solar cells that are used to re-distribute light and heat on tidally-locked planets, industrial pollution or artificial light beams. Our own civilization is starting to study the feasibility of interstellar travel using a powerful laser beam pushing on a lightweight sail, the so-called Starshot Initiative. If successful, we might receive a signal from outer space stating: welcome to the interstellar club!.

  • Alien Contact: What Happens Next?

    1:11

Are we alone in this vast universe? Some think that’s highly unlikely. With new technologies joining the search, NASA estimates we’ll find definitive evidence of aliens within 20 to 30 years. Which raises the vital question: And then what? Will the news inspire jubilation, despair, or fear? Will aliens be seen as gods or interlopers? Evidence of alien life will provoke fundamental questions about our place in the universe–not just about who they are, but also who we are. Join astronomers, astrobiologists, anthropologists, philosophers, and linguists as we ponder these issues.

  • Are aliens coming? Harvard astronomers suggest cigar-shaped space object is alien probe

    1:02

A mysterious cigar-shaped object spotted tumbling through our solar system last year may have been an alien spacecraft sent to investigate Earth, astronomers from Harvard University have suggested. The object, nicknamed 'Oumuamua,' meaning a messenger that reaches out from the distant past in Hawaiian, was first discovered in October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii. Since its discovery, scientists have been at odds to explain its unusual features and precise origins, with researchers first calling it a comet and then an asteroid, before finally deeming it the first of its kind: a new class of interstellar objects. • Have astronomers discovered an alien megastructure?

    4:15

Astronomers have spotted an object in space that blocks a surprising amount of sunlight, leading to speculation it could be a massive structure built by aliens. CBS News science contributor Michio Kaku spoke to CBSN about the enormous discovery.
