    1:30:28

With more board configurations than there are atoms in the universe, the ancient Chinese game of Go has long been considered a grand challenge for artificial intelligence.

On March 9, 2016, the worlds of Go and artificial intelligence collided in South Korea for an extraordinary best-of-five-game competition, coined The DeepMind Challenge Match. Hundreds of millions of people around the world watched as a legendary Go master took on an unproven AI challenger for the first time in history.

Directed by Greg Kohs and with an original score by Academy Award nominee Hauschka, AlphaGo had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. It has since gone on to win countless awards and near universal praise for a story that chronicles a journey from the halls of Oxford, through the backstreets of Bordeaux, past the coding terminals of DeepMind in London, and ultimately, to the seven-day tournament in Seoul. As the drama unfolds, more questions emerge: What can artificial intelligence reveal about a 3000-year-old game? What can it teach us about humanity?

    Find out more:

I want my style of Go to be something different, something new, my own thing, something that no one has thought of before. Lee Sedol, Go Champion (18 World Titles).

We think of DeepMind as kind of an Apollo program effort for AI. Our mission is to fundamentally understand intelligence and recreate it artificially. Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder & CEO, DeepMind.

The Game of Go is the holy grail of artificial intelligence. Everything we've ever tried in AI, it just falls over when you try the game of Go. Dave Silver, Lead Researcher for AlphaGo.

  • Why did Lee Sedol, one of the world’s best ‘Go’ players, retire from the game?

    4:43

One of the greatest ‘Go’ players of all time just retired from the game, saying that artificial intelligence programmes can play at a level humans aren’t able to. His decision has reignited discussions about AI and how we define human achievement. #AI #Go #LeeSedol #SouthKorea

  • The Undeparted an award winning documentary film about spirits, attachments, and people!

    36:45

Things that happened while making this film really happened. Our journey begins at a small unassuming Antique Shop in Marriottsville, MD, when a filmmaker purchases an antique item, and finds himself confronted by the idea of spirit attachments. Curiosity gets the better of him and he embarks on a journey to find out more about this shop and the people that surround it! This is a true and honest documentary, and what happens during the course of this film, really happened!

Find and follow The Undeparted on Facebook here:

My personal life drew me into this shop, and my curiosity with interesting people and stories led to this film.

Producing this documentary has opened my mind to the possibilities of energy lingering and slowly dissipating with time, like a footprint in concrete.

There are things I wish we had had the budget to do, that I feel would have increased the emotional honesty of some of the things that happened during the process of filming, but I am really proud of the work our team did on this documentary film and I sincerely hope you will open your mind to the honesty and thoughtfulness of this film, on this subject.

    Thank you.

  • Artificial intelligence and algorithms: pros and cons | DW Documentary

    42:32

Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) are leading to fundamental changes in the way we live. Algorithms can already detect Parkinson's disease and cancer, and control both cars and aircraft. How will AI change our society in the future?

This documentary journeys to the hot spots of AI research in Europe, the USA and China, and looks at the revolutionary developments which are currently taking place. The rapid growth of AI offers many opportunities, but also many dangers. AI can be used to create sound and video recordings which will make it more and more difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction. It will make the world of work more efficient and many professions superfluous. Algorithms can decide whether to grant loans, who is an insurance risk, and how good employees are. But there is a huge problem: humans can no longer comprehend how algorithms arrive at their decisions. And another big problem is AI’s capacity for widespread surveillance. The Chinese city of Rongcheng is already using an AI-supported 'social credit system' to monitor and assess its citizens. Does AI pose a danger to our personal freedoms or democracy? Which decisions can we leave to the algorithms - and which do we want to? And what are AI’s social implications?

Some believe the earliest documentation of alien visitation to Earth exists in prehistoric cave paintings and petroglyphs, where drawings of strange humanoid figures feature distinctively non-human attributes and anatomy, including helmets and other accoutrements too advanced to be from the ancient world. Arguably, this is the first evidence in what would become a centuries-long worldwide enigma that has exploded into popular culture, but has yielded little tangible proof. From the prehistoric drawings through the Roswell incident, reports of strange and unexplainable sightings in the skies have become part of an unofficial historic record. With the proliferation of video and photo technology in the modern era, reports of these events along with visual evidence have only increased. 95% of UFO sightings are false, resulting either from misidentification or deliberate hoaxes. But the other 5% cannot be dismissed; SECRET ACCESS: UFOS ON THE RECORD focuses on those 5%.

Based on the newly published book UFO's: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record, this two-hour special explores sightings that are supported by numerous creditable sources, from Air Force and commercial pilots, FAA officials, investigators, military Generals and NASA officials as well as hard data: photos, film, radar and audio recordings. This evidence presents a startling look at the very real possibility of alien visitation.

  • Black & Whyte - A Norseman Story

Winner of Best Documentary Feature in the Oniros Film Awards- New York
Official Selection - London Lift Off Film Festival
Official Selection - Rome Independent Prisma Awards
Finalist - Best Soundtrack - Oniros Film Awards - New York

The Norseman has been dubbed 'The Toughest Triathlon on the Planet'.
In Norway each year, some of the best triathletes in the world compete to try and win the coveted,
    'Norseman Black' shirt.
In 2019, Olympian, endurance expert and five times Iron Man, Professor Greg Whyte decided that he would attempt to add this hard won prize to his already incredible list of achievements.
At 52 years of age though, he would be one of the most senior competitors ever to enter this most punishing of of races.
The film follows Greg over an 8 month period, as he prepares for the race, conditioning both body and mind but also dealing with the types of injuries that a lifetime in sport, and age, inevitably presents.
'Black & Whyte' provides a unique training blueprint for any athlete looking to push themselves further and harder.
Perhaps most importantly though, this is a film that shows that with the right preparation and mental resilience, age is nothing more than a number.

In the first days of 2017, rumors started to ricochet around the online go community. A mysterious online player had been making huge waves by defeating dozens of top professionals on go sites in Asia in recent days. “Master” first appeared on December 30, 2016 (Beijing time), registering from Korea. Achieving 30 consecutive wins against many former and current world go champions, Master defeated Park Junghwan four times and Ke Jie twice. After that, Master appeared on a different go site and logged another 30 consecutive wins. That made it 60 games in a row with no losses. Was AlphaGo the Master?

Michael Redmond had been on holiday when the games were being played but word had of course spread swiftly through the professional community about the mysterious online player racking up win after win. “That kind of record was simply mindblowing,” he says, “and even before I got the game files off the internet it was clear that something new was happening. Anyone – or anything – that could win 60 straight games could probably give a 2-stone handicap, and these were top professionals who were losing to a player no-one had ever heard of.” The 60 Master games were not only evidence that AlphaGo had attained a whole new level of play, but an incredibly rich “treasure trove for professionals,” says Michael.

We’ll explore all 60 games in Volume 2 of AlphaGo to Zero: The Complete Games, and as part of our work on that book – and to whet your appetite – we’re producing a new series of commentaries in which Redmond focuses on the key points of each game in brief videos, most of which will be 15 minutes or less. Special thanks to series director and producer Stephen Hu, whose good humor and technical skills are matched only by his boundless enthusiasm. We hope you enjoy watching these commentaries as much as we had fun making them!

The human player in this first game is 15-year-old Pan Tingyu 1P (潘 亭宇), who finished #1 in the Chinese professional qualification tournament in 2015. Pan has Black and plays a modern version of the mini-Chinese, and AlphaGo shows a new move in the upper left corner, which has since become the standard move for White in the Chinese opening pattern.

Lee Sedol vs AlphaGo Move 37 reactions and analysis .
Reactions from Lee Sedol, reactions from AlphaGo team, reactions from commentators, analysis on move 37 . Google DeepMind Challenge.

With more board configurations than there are atoms in the universe, the ancient Chinese game of 'Go' has long been considered a grand challenge for artificial intelligence. On March 9, 2016, the worlds of Go and artificial intelligence collided in South Korea for an extraordinary best-of-five-game competition, coined The Google DeepMind Challenge Match. Hundreds of millions of people around the world watched as a legendary Go master took on an unproven AI challenger for the first time in history. Directed by Greg Kohs with an original score by Academy Award nominee, Hauschka, AlphaGo chronicles a journey from the halls of Cambridge, through the backstreets of Bordeaux, past the coding terminals of DeepMind in London, and, ultimately, to the seven-day tournament in Seoul. As the drama unfolds, more questions emerge: What can artificial intelligence reveal about a 3000-year-old game? What can it teach us about humanity?

Our StarCraft II program AlphaStar is the first Artificial Intelligence to defeat a top professional player. In a series of test matches held on 19 December 2018, AlphaStar decisively beat Team Liquid’s Grzegorz MaNa Komincz, one of the world’s strongest professional StarCraft players, 5-0, following a successful benchmark match against his team-mate Dario “TLO” Wünsch. The matches took place under professional match conditions on a competitive ladder map and without any game restrictions.

  • Googles AI AlphaGo Is Beating Humanity At Its Own Games

    2:05

Go is an ancient, aristocratic Chinese board game that’s reputed to have as many possible moves as there are atoms in the universe. And Google recently trained an artificial intelligence computer to play against one of the best human players in the world. The computer won.

At Google’s Future of Go Summit, 19-year-old Chinese Go prodigy Ke Jie was defeated by the AI AlphaGo in a three-match series.

AI evangelists are happy with the win, but AI doomsayers are worried it’s coming for our jobs next. And China is just mad that an American company beat the world at a Chinese game.

VICE News reports on what the competition really means for AI development.

DeepMind's Professor David Silver describes AlphaGo Zero, the latest evolution of AlphaGo, the first computer program to defeat a world champion at the ancient Chinese game of Go. Zero is even more powerful and is arguably the strongest Go player in history.

Previous versions of AlphaGo initially trained on thousands of human amateur and professional games to learn how to play Go. AlphaGo Zero skips this step and learns to play simply by playing games against itself, starting from completely random play. In doing so, it quickly surpassed human level of play and defeated the previously published champion-defeating version of AlphaGo by 100 games to 0.

  • The Internet of Everything - True Story Documentary Channel

    52:04

The Internet is invading all aspects of your life. No longer confined to your computer or your phone, the Internet is now in garbage cans, refrigerators, and the infrastructure of our cities. The future will either be a surveillance nightmare or an eco-utopia, the outcome determined by startups in Silicon Valley and Shenzhen.

The Internet of Everything captures our present moment, when both futures still seem possible.

Brett Gaylor – a reformed techno-utopian who works in the tech industry – will be your guide.

His award winning documentaries Rip! A Remix Manifesto and Do Not Track have mapped the public’s relationship with the Internet; first fascination and obsession, then growing discomfort around the abuse of our private information, and now a sense of confusion and dread. If the pace of change and lack of agency is confusing for a techie like Brett, everyone else is probably feeling bewildered, too.

But now, with the connecting of the physical world into the “Internet of Things”, the stakes have been raised – it’s no longer just the abstractions of cyberspace that are spinning out of control, but instead our homes, our bodies and our cities that are being transformed.

It’s a fast, funny and enlightening take on the bewildering change the Internet has wrought. The Internet of Everything embraces the “tech-lash” while reflecting on the big picture of a world where we are all connected.

    ABSTRACT
Google DeepMind's AlphaGo was an extraordinary breakthrough for Artificial Intelligence. The game of Go has 1.74×10^172 unique positions and is about a 'googol' times harder to calculate than chess. Experts thought it would take at least another decade before A.I. would be able to beat the best human players. So how did DeepMind tackle this problem? What algorithms did they [...]

    6. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Lee Sedol, Professional Go Player:
I feel sad that the challenge match is over, and also I wanted to make a successful end, but I feel sorry for not being able to make it. In fact, at the beginning of this match, I thought I had a bit more of an advantageous position, but the fact that I have lost despite (such an advantageous start) shows that I lack in (playing abilities), I think.
    7. Wide of Lee and Hassabis
    8. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Lee Sedol, Professional Go Player:
I am not quite sure whether I would be able to win this game even if I get another opportunity to compete with AlphaGo again, because it has such a high level of concentration. Certainly, humans cannot catch up in terms of concentrating ability, rather than playing capability. I cannot admit that (AlphaGo) has a better playing capability, though.
    9. Wide of news conference
    10. SOUNDBITE (English) Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind:
As we said before, we've learnt many things I think about AlphaGo and things we can improve. We won't know for sure until we go back home to the U.K. and analyse everything over the next few weeks, and then we will think about what we do next. If we will play more matches or maybe we will make some kind of release at some point to the general public. We have to decide all these things. We haven't decided yet.

Google's Go-playing computer program AlphaGo has again defeated its human opponent in a final match on Tuesday (15 MARCH 2016) that sealed its 4:1 victory.
In a news conference following the match, player Lee Sedol said he was disappointed to lose.
I feel sad that the challenge match is over, and also I wanted to make a successful end, but I feel sorry for not being able to make it. In fact, at the beginning of this match, I thought I had a bit more of an advantageous position, but the fact that I have lost despite (such an advantageous start) shows that I lack in (playing abilities), I think, he said.
However, Lee stressed that his loss does not necessarily mean that AlphaGo surpasses humans in terms of playing capability.
Lee will receive 170 thousand U.S. dollars as a cash prize for playing the match and winning a game.
The week-long showdown between the South Korean Go grandmaster and AlphaGo, Google DeepMind's artificial intelligence program, further confirmed the computer software has mastered a major challenge for artificial intelligence.
The series was one of the most intensely watched events in the past week across Asia.
The human-versus-machine battle hogged headlines, eclipsing reports of North Korean threats of a pre-emptive strike on the South.
