  • Enigmas of the Solar System | Documentary Boxset | Knowing the Planets

    1:35:39

The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the objects that orbit it, either directly or indirectly. Of the objects that orbit the Sun directly, the largest are the eight planets, with the remainder being smaller objects, the dwarf planets and small Solar System bodies. Of the objects that orbit the Sun indirectly—the moons—two are larger than the smallest planet, Mercury.

  • The Biggest Mystery in the Universe - Exploring and Understanding our Universe Documentary

    46:49

How will the universe end? Humanity has pondered this question for thousands of years. And now science actually has the knowledge and tools to attempt an answer.

Until rather recently, astronomers thought the cosmos would repeatedly expand and collapse in an infinite cycle of cosmic death and rebirth. But the best evidence points to a distant Armageddon filled with more existential dread than the Book of Revelation. Trillions of years in the future, long after Earth is destroyed, the universe will drift apart until galaxy and star formation ceases. Slowly, stars will fizzle out, turning night skies black. All lingering matter will be gobbled up by black holes until there’s nothing left. Finally, the last traces of heat will disappear.

  • The Discovery of the Universe Documentary - Unraveling the secrets of the Universe

    48:36

The chemical composition of the Universe and the physical nature of its constituent matter are topics that have occupied scientists for centuries. From its privileged position above the Earth’s atmosphere Hubble has been able to contribute significantly to this area of research.

All over the Universe stars work as giant reprocessing plants taking light chemical elements and transforming them into heavier ones. The original, so-called primordial, composition of the Universe is studied in such fine detail because it is one of the keys to our understanding of processes in the very early Universe.

  • NASA takes a Image of Mysterious Object that arrived from another Solar System!

    11:21

When we think of the sheer infinite vastness of the universe, we often ask ourselves what mysterious objects may be found in other solar systems. Indeed, space exploration is still in its infancy. While international scientists are currently working feverishly to study in detail the celestial bodies in our own planetary system, we can only speculate about those planets and galactic entities that lie outside the visible universe. Finally, should the rare case occur that an object from a distant galaxy roams through our solar system, this circumstance is tantamount to a galactic sensation. In the course of our following video, we would like to take a closer look at one of these mysterious objects together with you. Not long ago, NASA succeeded in discovering a fascinating object whose origin lies in an unknown distance. We wish you much pleasure with this exciting topic!

  • The greatest unsolved mysteries of the universe: Dr Paul Francis

    1:5:56

Which way do comets tails face? Does dark matter exist? Where did the universe come from and what is it made of? What's at the end of the universe? Dr Paul Francis discusses some of the 'greatest unsolved mysteries of the universe' at The Australian National University on 31 March 2010.

This talk will explore the greatest unsolved problems of modern astrophysics, describe why they are hard, and discuss the efforts being made to solve them.

Paul Francis is an astronomer at The Australian National University. He conducts research on comets, quasars, high redshift galaxies, and novel interactive teaching techniques. • Do We Live In An Infinite Universe? Weird Alien Worlds Beyond Our Solar System

    1:35:19

Though Earth was neatly orbiting the Sun as a rocky mass four and a half billion years ago, no organism could survive there. Radiation from the recent supernova kept the planet extremely hot, its surface molten, and oxygen was non-existent. Plus, incredibly massive meteorites and asteroids frequently slammed onto the surface — creating even more heat.
The Earth got so hot, it began melting. Heavier material sank to the bottom, lighter stuff rose to the top. Some elements evaporated. This transformation created the Earth's layered core and mantle, crust, and atmosphere.
Even today the Earth undergoes constant change. Shifting, sliding, and colliding tectonic plates surf atop its semi-molten mantle. This relentless drifting speeds along at the rate of fingernail growth, yet causes mountains to rise, volcanoes to erupt, and earthquakes to strike.
