    Expedition Antarctica | Science Documentary

Antarctica: Ready for Winter: Antarctica: Ready for Winter:

In February 2008, a team of the world’s leading marine scientists set out onboard the RV Tangaroa on a voyage like no other across the Great Southern Ocean to Antarctica. In the footsteps of Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition, their mission is to discover more about marine life in Antarctic waters. This is unchartered territory – as many scientists say… ‘less is known about the Antarctic seabed than the surface of Mars!’ Cooped up on a research vessel for 50 days they battle ferocious storms, some of the worst ice conditions ever encountered and personal tragedy. The stakes are high but this is science at the edge. If successful their findings could profoundly affect all our lives as the intrepid crew seek out clues about the future fate of our planet beneath the icy waters of one of the world’s most perilous yet most important oceans.

  • Antarctica- A Surreal Polar Voyage in Ultra - Luxury

    20:20

As the zodiac pulled up on the ethereal wilderness of whites in the seventh continent at the end of the world, a group of penguins and seals met us. Flapping their wings, twitching their tails and diving in the cold polar waters at the end of the world, they breathed life in Antarctica, they breathed life in No Man's Land.

Crossing the temperemental Drake Passage which was a smooth sailing this time, we travelled to Antarctica in a luxury cruise. Not only that, we made zodiac landings ashore ice while the first Michelin star Indian Chef Atul Kochhar took care of our culinary comforts on board.

We, at The Q, have captured the South time and again. Come, join us this December again, to beckon in the New Year, one that will surely become a magnum opus in your travelogue.

The Antarctic ice sheet is one of the two polar ice caps of the Earth. [nature documentary]

It covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent and is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It covers an area of almost 14 million square km (5.4 million sq. miles) and contains 26.5 million cubic km of ice (6.36 million cubic miles). That is, approximately 61 percent of all fresh water on the Earth is held in the Antarctic ice sheet, an amount equivalent to about 70 m of water in the world's oceans. In East Antarctica, the ice sheet rests on a major land mass, but in West Antarctica the bed can extend to more than 2,500 m below sea level. Much of the land in this area would be seabed if the ice sheet were not there. [nature documentary]

In contrast to the melting of the Arctic sea ice, sea ice around Antarctica has expanded in recent years. The reasons for this are not fully understood, but suggestions include the climatic effects on ocean and atmospheric circulation of the ozone hole, and/or cooler ocean surface temperatures as the warming deep waters melt the ice shelves. The Universe (Wikipedia)

The Universe is all of time and space and its contents. The Universe includes planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic space, the smallest subatomic particles, and all matter and energy. The observable universe is about 28 billion parsecs (91 billion light-years) in diameter at the present time. The size of the whole Universe is not known and may be infinite. Observations and the development of physical theories have led to inferences about the composition and evolution of the Universe.

Throughout recorded history, cosmologies and cosmogonies, including scientific models, have been proposed to explain observations of the Universe. The earliest quantitative geocentric models were developed by ancient Greek philosophers and Indian philosophers. Over the centuries, more precise astronomical observations led to Nicolaus Copernicus's heliocentric model of the Solar System and Johannes Kepler's improvement on that model with elliptical orbits, which was eventually explained by Isaac Newton's theory of gravity. Further observational improvements led to the realization that the Solar System is located in a galaxy composed of billions of stars, the Milky Way. It was subsequently discovered that our galaxy is just one of many. On the largest scales, it is assumed that the distribution of galaxies is uniform and the same in all directions, meaning that the Universe has neither an edge nor a center. Observations of the distribution of these galaxies and their spectral lines have led to many of the theories of modern physical cosmology. The discovery in the early 20th century that galaxies are systematically redshifted suggested that the Universe is expanding, and the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation suggested that the Universe had a beginning. Finally, observations in the late 1990s indicated the rate of the expansion of the Universe is increasing indicating that the majority of energy is most likely in an unknown form called dark energy. The majority of mass in the universe also appears to exist in an unknown form, called dark matter. [nature documentary]

Galapagos Islands National Geographic Expeditions | (Ecuador) Our Awesome Planet Vlog (Part I)
In Part 1, Todd and Tuliyani head out to the Galapagos with National Geographic on one of their ships, the Endeavor II. The first few days are filled with activities and getting to know what the Galapagos can offer. They visit the islands of San Cristobal, Española, Floreana, and Santa Cruz.

Welcome to the Galapagos, an archipelago full of unique biota and rare animals. These islands are a part of Ecuador and located about 1000 km outside of South America. Darwin made the Galapagos famous when he stepped foot onto its shores and developed his theory of natural selection, changing the way we understand evolution.

On the Islands of the Galapagos live several fearless animals who have never known any predators. To preserve their innocence, it is important to save the environment that the animals live in and the best way to do so is to educate the world about such a rare location.

Watch as Todd and Tuliyani experience the Galapagos aboard the National Geographic Endeavor II and witness animals behave like they’ve never seen before.

It’s an eventful first few days that leaves them at awe that such a place exists: marine iguanas that blend in with the rocks, sea lion pups that are just as playful as dogs and mockingbirds that steal whatever they can get.

Mysterious Things Found Frozen In Ice Antarctica is the best National Geographic Documentary
From the time that explorers first glimpsed Antarctica in the early 1800s, people have wanted to know more about the mysterious frozen continent at the bottom of the world. What was underneath the ice? How could living things even exist in a place with such an extreme climate? Starting in the late 1950s, scientists began to probe Antarctica’s mysteries in earnest, with efforts such as the U.S. Antarctic Program and Antarctica New Zealand, which operates Scott Base. Over the three decades in particular, researchers have made scores of important discoveries. Here are 11 that are particularly insightful.
