With the six powerful engines, loads of up to 250 tons are no problem for the Antonov An-225. The plane was originally intended to take the Soviet Buran space shuttle back from its landing site to the Baikonur spaceport in Kazakhstan. After the end of the space program, Antonov Airlines converted the An-225 into a cargo plane. The next order: the transport of twelve electrical transformers from Chile across the Andes to Bolivia with twelve flights in just four weeks.

  • EXTREME DOCUMENTARY !!! Worlds Largest Aircraft Antonov 225 Full Documentary

    46:27

A documentary about the worlds largest and extreme aircraft the Antonov 225. The Antonov An-225 Mriya (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-225 Мрія (dream or inspiration), NATO reporting name: Cossack) is a strategic airlift cargo aircraft that was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union during the 1980s. It is powered by six turbofan engines and is the longest and heaviest aircraft ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes (710 short tons). It also has the largest wingspan of any aircraft in operational service. The single example built has the Ukrainian civil registration UR-82060. A second airframe with a slightly different configuration[1] was partially built. Its construction was halted in 1994[1] because of lack of funding and interest, but revived briefly in 2009, bringing it to 60%-70% completion.[2] On 30 August 2016, Antonov agreed to complete the second airframe for Aerospace Industry Corporation of China (not to be confused with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China) as a prelude to AICC commencing series production.[3]

The Antonov An-225, initially developed for the task of transporting the Buran spaceplane, was an enlargement of the successful Antonov An-124. The first and only An-225 was completed in 1988. After successfully fulfilling its Soviet military missions, it was mothballed for eight years. It was then refurbished and re-introduced, and is in commercial operation with Antonov Airlines carrying oversized payloads.[4] The airlifter holds the absolute world records for an airlifted single-item payload of 189,980 kilograms (418,830 pounds),[5][6] and an airlifted total payload of 253,820 kg (559,580 lb).[7][8] It has also transported a payload of 247,000 kg (545,000 lb) on a commercial flight.[9]

Based on Antonov's earlier An-124, the An-225 has fuselage barrel extensions added fore and aft of the wings. The wings also received root extensions to increase span. Two more Progress D-18T turbofan engines were added to the new wing roots, bringing the total to six. An increased-capacity landing gear system with 32 wheels was designed, some of which are steerable, enabling the aircraft to turn within a 60 m-wide (200 ft) runway. Like its An-124 predecessor, the An-225 has nose gear designed to kneel so cargo can be more easily loaded and unloaded.[8] Unlike the An-124, which has a rear cargo door and ramp, the An-225 design left these off to save weight, and the empennage design was changed from a single vertical stabilizer to a twin tail with an oversized, swept-back horizontal stabilizer. The twin tail was essential to enable the plane to carry large, heavy external loads that would disturb the airflow around a conventional tail. Unlike the An-124, the An-225 was not intended for tactical airlifting and is not designed for short-field operation.[10]

An-225 Ivchenko Progress D-18T turbofan engines
Initially the An-225 had a maximum gross weight of 600 t (660 short tons), but from 2000 to 2001 the aircraft underwent modifications at a cost of US$20M such as the addition of a reinforced floor, which increased the maximum gross weight to 640 t (710 short tons).[26][27][28]

Both the earlier and later takeoff weights establish the An-225 as the world's heaviest aircraft, being heavier than the double-deck Airbus A380. It is surpassed in other size-related categories, however: Airbus claims to have improved upon the An-225's maximum landing weight by landing an A380 at 591.7 tonnes (1,304,000 lb) during tests,[29] and the Hughes H-4 Hercules, known as the Spruce Goose, has a greater wingspan and a greater overall height. But the Spruce Goose is 20% shorter and overall lighter, due to the materials used in its construction. In addition, the H-4 only flew once, making the An-225 the largest aircraft in the world to fly multiple times.[8][30]

    The An-225's pressurized cargo hold is 1,300 m3 (46,000 cu ft) in volume; 6.4 m (21 ft 0 in) wide, 4.4 m (14 ft) high, and 43.35 m (142 ft 3 in) long[8][31][32] — longer than the first flight of the Wright Flyer.[33][34][35]

Starting in the late 1970’s, engineers began studying options to develop a much more capable strategic heavy lift transport. The aircraft’s primary mission would be to carry Energia-Buran components, but engineers also planned on using the new airplane to serve as a launch platform for a small air-launched reusable spacecraft called the MAKS (Multipurpose aerospace system). The Antonov An-124 Ruslan Cargo Transport, under development in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, was a logical starting point. The strategic lift cargo plane was already set to be the largest and most capable transport to ever enter service, and it was expected to be ready in time for Energia-Buran. But even the An-124 wasn't quite large or powerful enough.

Rather than design an entirely new aircraft from scratch, engineers lengthened the An-124’s fuselage and added a new center section to increase the aircraft’s overall wing span. To give the plane more power, they added two additional engines, giving the plane a total of 309,600 pounds of thrust. Engineers also redesigned the vertical stabilizer to accommodate larger components, and designed a new landing gear to distribute the plane’s immense weight across 32 wheels. The new supersized jet would be designated as the AN-225 Mriya.

The enormous plane made its first flight on December 21, 1998, one month after the first launch of an unmanned Buran spacecraft. But the successes of the Energia-Buran and the An-225 were soon overshadowed by the fact that the Soviet Union was going bankrupt. It meant the Buran would never launch again, and the An-225 no longer had a mission.

Today the An-225 is used to transport cargo that would otherwise be impossible to fly. But the plane’s outsized cargo lifting capabilities also come with an outsized cost. At upwards of $30,000 an hour to operate, the An-225 only flies when no other aircraft can do the job. But as a one of a kind aircraft in a class of its own, the An-225 still draws crowds wherever it lands.

  • Which is Bigger ? Antonov AN225 vs Airbus A380

    5:06

    Antonov An-225

The Antonov An-225 was designed to airlift the Energia rocket's boosters and the Buran orbiter for the Soviet space program. It was developed as a replacement for the Myasishchev VM-T. The An-225's original mission and objectives are almost identical to that of the United States' Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

    Airbus A380

The Airbus A380 is the world's largest passenger airliner, a wide-body aircraft manufactured by Airbus. Airbus studies started in 1988 and the project was announced in 1990 to challenge the dominance of the Boeing 747 in the long haul market. The A3XX project was presented in 1994; Airbus launched the €9.5 billion ($10.7 billion) A380 program on 19 December 2000. The first prototype was unveiled in Toulouse on 18 January 2005, with its first flight on 27 April 2005. It obtained its EASA and FAA type certificates on 12 December 2006

  • Incredible Flight on Antonov AN-124 Cargo Transporter

    21:26

I went on an INCREDIBLE ride inside the Volga Dnepr An-124 Ruslan Cargo Transporter from the East Midlands, UK to Toulouse, France.

There is nothing quite like the An-124! Designed in the late 1970s and capable of carrying 120 tons of oversized cargo. The An-124 is one of the biggest cargo aircraft in the world. It was an important means of national transport and a prestige object for the Soviet Union. Forty years later, it is still highly sought after in the transport sector.

6 cockpit crew and 7 cargo loadmasters accompanied me on my AN-124 flight. There are built in cranes and equipment inside the aircraft for the An-124 to operate in any remote airfield, without ground support. Watch the complex loading exercise before a flight inside the “hidden” passenger compartment of the An-124. I mounted a GoPro camera to capture the 6 men cockpit action during the flight. Loadmaster Vladimir explains all the characteristics and operations of the An-124.

Flying on the Antonov 124 is unlike any other flight experience I have had in the past. It is RAW Aviation and really brings the “AvGeekness” out in me.

  • An-225 As A Passenger Plane - Does It Work?

    10:26

What would the Antonov AN-225 be like if it was a passenger plane? As in, we take the existing aircraft, slap in some seats, and start flying revenue flights? How many passengers could it fly and would it be a good experience? Let us get our hands dirty and get to work!

The Antonov AN-225 Myria is the world's most powerful cargo plane (well, one that can carry cargo inside the aircraft), and a feat of pure incredible, engineering. It was originally designed to carry the Soviet equivalent of the space shuttle, however, when that space plane program was shut down, all that remained was the plane.

Its features include an incredible carrying capacity of around 200 tonnes, more than any other aircraft, powered by six engines that make the Boeing 747 look like a small regional jet. The other aircraft lies incomplete and there is little justification to get it back to operational condition.

The AN-225 has a length of 84m or 275 feet. However, the cabin doesn't go the length of the plane, with instead the cabin only reaching 43.35 meters, or 142 feet.

Starting with an economy cabin, we know that the average economy seat is 18 inches wide, and 31 inches deep in pitch. If the cabin is 21 feet wide, or 252 inches, then we can fit in 14 seats across. But we know that the A380, with the same cabin, can only fit maximum 11 seats across due to the asiles and other features. As its the same width, we will assume the same restrictions with a configuration of 3-5-3.

So how many can we fit in the cabin? At 31 inches of seat pitch, and the cabin itself measuring 1704 inches long, thats 55 rows. But of course, we need doors, stairs, bathrooms, and more. pushing it down to around an abartariy 45 rows. That gives us a total economy capacity on the An-225 lower deck of around 495 passengers. Cosy.

Now lets have a look at the upper deck. As the plane actually curves inwards, there is not enough room for the same width of seats, reducing our cabin to around 9 seats across in a 3-3-3 configuration. Assuming the same length and rows, that would be an additional 405 passengers. For a total of 900 passengers onboard in all economy.

But lets add in some buisness class passengers so we can actually have some higher paying customers. An impressive business class seat of 80 inches deep, and 20 inches wide, would set us back to a row configuration of 2-2-2. At 80 inches deep, and the same length of the cabin, thats 21 seats. For a total of 84 passengers.

Combine that together and we have around 490 passengers, just under 500.

In an eariler exercise, I went as far as to use the ratio of passenger per cubic meter as with the A380, and had a lower answer of 255 people on the lower deck, and a further 189 on the upper deck. This gives a total of 444 total passengers across a three-class configuration.

The An-225 has an empty range of 15,400 km (9,600 mi, 8,300 nmi) with maximum fuel; or a range with 200 tonnes payload of 4,000 km (2,154 nautical miles).

As we know that the distance between two popular destinations, such as London to New York is 5571.55 km / 3008.39 nautical miles, and the distance between London and Dubai is 5471.77 km / 2954.52 nautical miles. So this plane will need to have a range of at least 3-4,000 nautical miles to be practical or a carrying capacity of 100 tonnes.

If the average passenger weighs 75kg, or 85kg if they are American, then we will have a total weight of 41,000 kg for 490 passengers. Plus luggage, which would be 20kg at least per passenger, so another 9,000 tonnes. that gets us up to 50 tonnes. We still have another 50 tonnes leftover, which would go to the seats, interior, deck, entertainment system, food, and more. We might be able to get even more out of the plane if we replaced its six engines with the latest GE9X engines from the 777X.

You might notice something else missing from our earlier cross-section... where does the baggage go? These designs don't accommodate any luggage at all, there is no cargo deck and no room to place any items outside of the cabin at all.

Also, we have to mention that the cargo cabin of the plane is utterly decompressed during flight so not only will the passengers be freezing cold, but they will also struggle to breathe. There also are no windows.

Lastly, this plane as a commercial carrier is essentially a total overdesign. The An-225 has a stronger structure to carry heavy items like a tank or a space shuttle. Passengers are far lighter and spread over a bigger area and thus its a different weight layout entirely. There is an arguement that the lower deck of our design could be cargo, and the upper deck passengers, but likely we would have seen an A380 converted before we do this to the AN-225.

But this plane would be a heck of a ride, and I think if you had the only commercial carrier in the world you might sell out every flight simply because of all the plane geeks willing to pay to flying on an ex-soviet space shutter carrier!

  • 2021- |Facts about the worlds biggest plane, Antonov An 225| - antonov 225 takeoff and landing

    4:03

World’s Biggest Plane Antonov An-225 Mriya Landing
The wide body Antonov An-225 is powered by six turbofan engines and is the longest and heaviest airplane ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes. It was built to carry Soviet space shuttles and, 27 years after it entered service, it's still the world's biggest plane. The An-225, better known as the Mriya (Ukrainian for dream) creates a fuss wherever it goes. Measuring 84 m long with an 88 m wingspan, it weighs 175 tonnes without cargo or fuel. It's the longest-bodied, longest-winged and heaviest operational plane in the world. Its cargo compartment is 43 m by 6.4 m by 4.4 m - big enough to hold 50 cars. And there is only one operational Antonov An-225 in the world!

    Transcript:

The Antonov AN-225 Mriya has returned to the skies. This time, the world’s largest aircraft has joined the fight against COVID-19.

After 18 months for modernization, Antonov returned the AN-225 with a test flight on March 25, 2020. Today, the AN-225 arrived in Warsaw, Poland, with supplies to battle COVID-19.

KGHM, a Polish mining company, along with the Polish government, chartered the Antonov AN-225 for this special mission.

On April 11, 2020, the Ukrainian jet took off from Kyiv (Kiev) bound for Almaty. The next day, the aircraft took off from Almaty and arrived in Tianjin, China, to pick up medical supplies.

On April 13, the aircraft departed Tianjin and had another stopover in Almaty before leaving the next day and arriving in Warsaw Chopin Airport on the morning of April 14.

The Antonov AN-225 is expected to transport 400 tons of medical cargo from China to Poland including 7 million face masks and several hundred thousand face screens and protective suits.

As the AN-225 has a capacity of 250 tons of cargo, the aircraft will likely make another trip to carry the rest of the supplies.

The Antonov AN-225’s cargo capacity is equivalent to two and half Boeing 777Fs, or 10 times a Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s.

This Antonov AN-225 Mriya, registered as UR-82060, was the only AN-225 ever completely built. The aircraft was produced in the 1980s and had its first flight in 1988.

In addition to the AN-225, the Antonov Company has been using its five AN-124s to carry medical supplies for areas in need.

The An-22 Antei is a Soviet heavy turboprop military transport aircraft created in the Antonov Design Bureau in the 1960s.

Created to provide transportation of heavy and oversized cargo, as well as airborne operations, the An-22 became an outstanding machine for its time. To this day, it is considered the largest turboprop aircraft in the world.

A total of 69 aircraft of this model were manufactured, which were actively used in the USSR Air Force. By 2021, most of the fleet has been decommissioned, however, several units are still in service in the Russian Aerospace Forces and Antonov Airlines.

  • Antonov An-225 Mriya landing at Montreal Mirabel Airport!

    16:48

The absolute highlight of my life, here's my first sighting of the Antonov An-225 Mriya, the world's largest aircraft. This 6-engine airlifter is transporting medical equipment from Tianjin to Montreal as part of efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic. The aircraft made stops in Nagoya and Anchorage before its red-eye flight here.

This is its second mission to Montreal this month, after a visit early in May which was its first visit to Mirabel since 2012. The Antonov An-225 was based on the An-124, the second-largest aircraft, and was originally conceived to transport the Buran space shuttle on its back. Development lagged, and the Mriya made its first flight in December 1988, a month after Buran's sole spaceflight mission. After the Buran program and the Soviet Union ended in 1991, the aircraft was placed into storage and refurbished in 2001 for commercial service, carrying outsize cargo. Changes from the An-124 included two extra engines, longer fuselage and wingspan, dual vertical stabilisers, four extra pairs of landing gears, and the rear cargo door/ramp was eliminated to save weight.

This is the one and only An-225. There is a second incomplete An-225, and while there are benefits to complete it, no plan to do so came into fruition due to lack of funding.

This is the highlight of my life, as I previously missed its visit to Toronto in 2014 as mental health issues back then prevented me from leaving home. Since then, I have tried to seek opportunities to see this aircraft. During its unloading on this mission, one of the engine fuel pumps developed a problem and needed a replacement, thus requiring the aircraft to stay here overnight. I will not be able to film its departure.

Later on in the day I continued my task as part of the team for the Count Me In Leadership Summit, originally to take place in Camp Trillium, however we moved the summit online due to the pandemic. Absolutely amazing to hear world-famous keynote speakers like Jessie Funk, David Flood, and A'ric Jackson.

  • Massive Airplanes - Airbus A380 vs Antonov 225

    4:39

Hey guys welcome to a brand new video. Today we will be taking a look at the worlds largest passenger jet and the worlds largest cargo jet.

First lets introduce the European built Airbus A380 - The Airbus A380 is a wide-body aircraft manufactured by Airbus. It is the world's largest passenger airliner. Airbus studies started in 1988 and the project was announced in 1990 to challenge the dominance of the Boeing 747 in the long haul market.

Next the Ukrainian built Antonov AN-225 - The Antonov An-225 Mriya is a strategic airlift cargo aircraft that was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union during the 1980s. It was designed to airlift the Energia rocket's boosters and the Buran orbiter for the Soviet space program. The An-225's original mission and objectives are almost identical to that of the United States' Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.
So in two very different ways they were built to rival variants of the famous Queen of the Skies the Boeing 747.

  • What If The Antonov AN-225 Was A Passenger Plane?

    6:41

In a previous article, we asked the question of which was better: an Airbus A380 or an Antonov AN-225? But we focused on the cargo aspect and didn’t consider if the Antonov was converted into a passenger aircraft. What would a passenger version of an AN-225 look like? Where would it fly? And would it make sense for airlines?

Here’s a little aviation experiment you can try at home: go ahead and ask a friend or family member what they think the world’s biggest plane is. Unless they’re an aircraft aficionado, I’d bet that most of them will come up with the same answer: the Airbus a380. And you couldn’t really blame them for reaching that conclusion - the a380 is an absolute beast. Not only does it have the largest capacity of any commercial airliner - carrying over 500 passengers with ease - but it’s also the only commercial jet that’s a true double decker.

But the a380 isn’t the world’s biggest plane, and it’s not even all that close. Compared to the plane that does hold the title, the a380 actually looks downright puny. So what exactly is this behemoth of a plane, and why haven’t more people heard of it? Let me explain…

Largest Aircraft In The World - Antonov An-225 Mriya

    #Aircraft
    #Antonov
    #Mriya

Antonov AN-225 is the largest cargo plane ever built and has remained in service since its launch. The original Antonov AN-225 first took to the skies in 1988. The manufacturer named the plane “Mriya”, which translates to “Dream” in Ukrainian.

Anyone who’s seen an Airbus A380 knows how ridiculously large it is. But, did you know that there’s an even larger aircraft flying through the skies? Yes, it is Antonov AN-225. The aircraft stretches 88.4 meters (290 feet) from wingtip to wingtip and 84 meters (276 feet) from nose to tail. That’s 8.4 meters (22.5 feet) wider than Airbus’ A380. Compared to Airbus A380, Mriya is 11-meter longer, and its wingspan exceeds by 9 meters.

Powered by six turbo [Progress D-18T turbofan engines] engines three on each side. The plane is capable of traveling 9569 miles with a full fuel tank. Considering its huge size, it’s surprisingly fast too. It benefits from a maximum speed of 850 KM/Hr, and a cruising speed of 800 KM/Hr. One of its most impressive specifications is the fact it can carry a massive 640 tonnes of weight.

Transport aircraft chartered under NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS) programme are ferrying nearly 25 million protective masks from China to Germany to help medical professionals fight the spread of COVID-19. The first of three airlifts landed in Leipzig on 27 April 2020. The Antonov AN-225 carried 10 million masks and the remaining two flights will bring an additional 14,900,000 masks. The AN-225 is the largest plane in the world, and is made available to the nine NATO Allies participating in the SALIS programme, which is managed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency.

  • Antonov An-225 Mriya - The Worlds Largest Aircraft

    4:29

Military Media - Antonov An 225, The World's Largest Aircraft..

Talking about aircraft in the world, the Antonov An-225 Mriya certainly cannot be ignored.

Antonov An-225 Mriya is the largest aircraft in the world.
This cargo plane was made in Ukraine during the Cold War by the Antonov company.

At the beginning of its appearance, the Antonov An-225 was used to transport the shuttle to the Soviet Union.

    In Ukrainian, 'Mriya' means 'dream'.

The wingspan of the largest aircraft in the world reaches 88 meters with a length of 84 meters, according to the Daily Mail.

Of course the size is bigger than five container trucks or 10 British battle tanks.

Another interesting thing, the width of the Antonov An-225 Mriya is able to beat the wingspan of the largest passenger aircraft in the world today, the Airbus A380.

The Antonov An-225 Mriya is equipped with six engines and is capable of carrying a maximum load of up to 250 tons.

With all the specifications it has, Antonov An-225 Mriya successfully won 240 records at once.
