  • Why Microsoft Keeps Beating Apple And Google With Windows

    17:44

Microsoft Windows debuted in 1985 and for the past two decades it has been the dominant PC operating system worldwide. In 2020, Windows had almost 83% market share by unit shipments, while Google Chrome OS had 10% and Apple’s Mac OS had 7%, according to Gartner.

From solitaire to its iconic start button and start up sounds, productivity apps, gaming and corporate computing, Windows changed the way we use computers. The legendary Windows 95 helped propel the company to dominate the market in personal computing. Microsoft has introduced many versions of Windows since its inception with some more memorable than others.

It’s competed with IBM, Apple, and Google for market space. According to Microsoft, there are more than 1.3 billion devices running Windows 10 worldwide on a monthly basis.

Today, Windows only makes up 14% of Microsoft’s business but remains a critical part of it. The company just announced the latest version Windows 11.

CNBC spoke with former Microsoft employees including Terry Myerson, Michael Cherry, Brad Silverberg and Tandy Trower to get a look back at over three decades of Windows.

  • How Microsoft and Apple Became Rivals

    12:23

In order to understand how the relationship between Apple and Microsoft developed, we have to travel back to 1976, the year Apple was founded. The Apple I was released in early April of that year and Steve Wozniak built it around the idea that it would run a custom version of Microsoft’s BASIC operating system. When the Apple I system was phased out in September of that year and development on the Apple II began, Microsoft caught wind of it and asked Apple if they wanted to license a more full featured version of BASIC. Steve Jobs declined, as they were happy with their version of the operating system Wozniak wrote. But when they showed off the Apple II at the West Coast Computer Faire in April 1977, they were overwhelmed with complaints since their operating system didn’t have floating-point, which basically means the machine didn’t understand numbers below −32,768 or any numbers above 32,767. As trivial as this might sound for consumer-level apps, it became a big problem as businesses began using computers for accounting and couldn’t use the machines to process any sizable numbers. After Apple heard all these complaints, they ultimately licensed Microsoft’s BASIC software for a flat rate of $31,000, or around $130,000 in today’s money. This license, which ultimately created an operating system called AppleSoft BASIC, actually saved Microsoft from near bankruptcy. Microsoft had previously licensed BASIC to Commodore for their PET system and ended up loosing a ton of money on the agreement. But the Apple II was a run away hit, with over six million units sold over its 16 year run on the market.

  • Why Google, Microsoft, and Apple Are Fighting For Classrooms

    7:42

Google, Microsoft and Apple are battling for dominance in classrooms. They all want their devices in the hands of the next generation of consumers.

The U.S. education-tech market is expected to hit $43 billion this year, with much of the growth coming in K-12 education, according to a study by Technavio.

Apple used to have the most devices in U.S. schools, but Google soared to the top after the release of the Chromebook in 2011. In 2018, Chromebooks made up 60 percent of all laptops and tablets purchased for U.S. K-12 classrooms, up from just 5 percent in 2012. Microsoft is second at 22 percent, followed by Apple, with 18 percent of shipments to U.S. schools in 2018, according to data from Futuresource Consulting.

Google has a majority of the U.S. education tech market largely because Chromebooks are so affordable. But Apple and Microsoft are making moves to try to change that.

Watch the video to learn how Apple and Microsoft are making moves to change that.

  • How Microsoft Stole Halo From Steve Jobs

    18:25

Go to or text “Nationsquid” to 500-500 for 60% off your first 3 months!
If you have been gaming for at least 10 years, there is no doubt that there is one game that comes to mind that is either one of your all-time favorites or one you’ve played at least once: Halo. It all started in 2001 with Halo: Combat Evolved, which was released as the launch title for the brand-new first-generation Xbox. It was one of the Xbox’s most iconic video games, and the Halo series has since become a symbol for early-2000s nostalgia and one of the highest-grossing media franchises in history. Really quite an impressive feat, but what if I told you that this almost never happened, and that Halo, initially, almost became a game for the Mac? Today we are going to be talking about easily one of the greatest plot twists of Silicon Valley: This is How Microsoft stole Halo from Apple.

It's probably hard to imagine that a game like Halo almost came into existence under the same umbrella as products like iMovie or iTunes. It almost seems like Apple would be the last company to put forward a whole new video game, especially one like this. But not only that, Apple is arguably responsible for making Halo even exist in the first place. This might seem like a lot of information to unpack, but when taking a critical look at the historical context of the era that Halo was developed in, this actually doesn’t seem all that far-fetched. By the time the late 1990s came along, video games were at the peak of their popularity thanks to gaming consoles. Around 38% of U.S. households owned one. It was very clear that this wasn’t a fad or something that was going away anytime soon, but something did feel missing. Seemingly hiding in plain sight: where’s all the western developers? I mean, you have, Sony’s PlayStation, the SNES, Nintendo 64, the SEGA Dreamcast, just to name a few. But what is the common denominator here? All of these consoles are Japanese, and most of their games were also Japanese. At this time, all of the western developed games were seen in the PC community, where you have Doom, Quake, SimCity 2000, the Elder Scrolls, Diablo, and of course, who could forget Pajama Sam and Putt-Putt. Western console video games were a dying art, and they needed to be resurrected if they wanted to continue working with the competition. Seeing all the tremendous success these Japanese consoles had, the Western World saw an opportunity to make a comeback; not all hope was lost, and that’s when Microsoft comes in.

Luckily, Microsoft wasn’t totally behind on all of this. The fact that Windows supported so many games is practically what made PC gaming a viable option, and this gave them a pretty good head start. You definitely couldn’t say the same about their direct competitor, Apple, as the Mac at this time ran virtually no games, at least not very popular ones. They did have games like Myth and Marathon that were successful, but that wasn’t enough, and Apple was aware of this. Apple even tried creating their own gaming console in 1996, which would be a disaster, but that’s a topic for another video. But Apple wasn’t ready to give up so easy. The iMac’s debut in 1998 saw incredible sales, bringing Apple back from the verge of bankruptcy and making it possible for them to be a competitor again. Steve Jobs thought that getting the new iMac more involved with gaming would make sales even better, and that’s what he sought out to do.

Okay, but what does this have anything to do with Halo? The reason you’re watching this. Well, the thing is, if Apple was going to compete with its rival gaming PCs, they couldn’t just make another game. They needed something good. Really good. A game that would have to be about just as innovative and original as the iMac itself. So, Apple got in touch with the company that had been making all of the games that were successful on the Macintosh: Bungie. The executive vice president of Bungie, Peter Tamte, had a former position at Apple and used that as leverage to get the attention of Steve Jobs to show that they were working on *the* ambitious game that the mac was looking for. And thus, Halo was born!

  • What Google, Facebook And Apple Can Learn From Microsoft’s 1998 Antitrust Fight

    7:58

In 1995, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates published a memo entitled The Internet Tidal Wave. Gates outlined seven areas where Microsoft could increase its focus on internet features, including a web browser. The next year Microsoft launched its Internet Explorer web browser. Microsoft faced an antitrust lawsuit by the Department of Justice in 1998 during the height of the Browser Wars. Its Internet Explorer was quickly becoming the go-to web browser for the masses, but the U.S. government argued it stifled competition.

  • Jim Cramer reacts to Alphabet, Starbucks, Microsoft and Apple earnings

    3:21

Mad Money host Jim Cramer recapped earnings reports coming from the Big Tech companies and coffee chain after the bell. Subscribe to CNBC Pro to access the full episode of Mad Money:

CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Tuesday advised investors to stick to their trading strategies and ignore the often-changing prism of the market after stocks snapped a five-day winning streak.

“Please, don’t take your cue from the day-to-day action because that just tells you you’re using the filter that we’re all using, instead of doing your own homework and making your own judgments,” the “Mad Money” host said.

“A lot of the trash that was thrown away today and tonight might just turn out to be the market’s treasure once we meet herd immunity,” he said, adding “we will reach herd immunity sooner than Wall Street expects. We just might not like how we get there.”

The comments come after the major averages all pulled back from their highs on Monday amid a busy week for earnings reports. The S&P 500 dropped almost 0.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite pulled back more than 1% as concerns continued to mount about the spread of Covid-19 variants and the potential impact on the economic recovery.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised Tuesday that the public, whether vaccinated or not, should wear face masks indoors in areas with high transmission rates.

Cramer said the new guidance helped drive selling in many stocks. Shares of United Parcel Service slid almost 7% and Tesla stock lost 1.9%, despite both companies reporting better-than-expected numbers in the second quarter.

“After two relentlessly positive weeks of earnings, we’ve adjusted. Great becomes merely good; not-so-bad becomes just bad … let’s just say things are being viewed as terrible,” Cramer said.

“You have to remember that this prism could be temporary ... but I suspect the market is in fault-finding mode,” he added.

Meanwhile, recession stocks like the utilities, drug and food plays began to rally, Cramer noted.

“The CDC, the NIH and the FDA have all created many moments of pain and hysteria that the market’s usually been able to shrug off,” Cramer said. “This time, though, the prism says we won’t be able to do that so quickly, so you should buy the recession-proof stocks that don’t need to worry about the economy, like the drugs or the utilities.”

Your tech will die — and right now, there’s not a whole lot you can do about it.

Imprisoned inside slick designs and end user license agreements, you don’t quite own your device. And that manufacturer doesn’t always allow you — or anyone not authorized by the manufacturer — to fix it if it breaks. This ensures that all repairs generate revenue for the parent company. And, if the device can’t easily be fixed, many consumers may choose to dispose of the device and buy a new, updated version.

Framework wanted to build a laptop with the right to repair at its heart, but one still the roughly the same size and weight as other laptops on the market. The DIY laptop option allows consumers to build their own laptop from a kit of modules, creating a customized product right off the bat. You can bring your own choice of operating system, memory, storage, and WiFi capabilities, or buy them from Framework.

Framework currently offers two different laptop models. The Framework laptop arrives put together, but is still customizable, upgradeable, and repairable.

  • Jim Cramer: How inflation affects stocks of Alphabet, Microsoft and Apple

    3:29

CNBC's Jim Cramer explained why money managers move into Big Tech stocks when the market grows concerned about rising inflation and a potential interest rate hike. Subscribe to CNBC Pro to access the full episode of Mad Money:

Money managers began moving into tech stocks as a hedge against inflation and Fed rate hikes, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Tuesday.

Rising raw costs led to a 5.4% increase in inflation last month, the biggest jump in consumer prices in more than a decade.

That triggered concern among some investors that the Federal Reserve could move to raise interest rates sooner than planned to address inflation, Cramer said.

“If you want one industry that’s immune to both inflation and a Fed-induced slowdown, well it’s big-cap tech,” the “Mad Money” host said after the market closed.

“Hyper-growth tech stocks are actually what works best during a slowdown.”

Despite the inflation number, the market barely reacted because Wall Street expected to see a jump in the consumer price index, Cramer said. The major U.S. averages all pulled back from record closes the day prior, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling more than 100 points.

Investors are also keeping an eye on the start of earnings season.

Many companies can’t afford to pass their higher costs onto the consumer because people will rebel. By the same token, not everyone can handle a sudden rise in interest rates, which is what many money managers are betting on. Cramer argued that’s unlikely.

“I don’t think [Fed Chair Jerome] Powell’s going to change his stance, but there are a lot of money managers who disagree,” he said. “When we see an [inflation] number like this, they sell a lot of other things and they buy tech.”

It explains a breakout in trading in big tech names like Google-parent Alphabet and Microsoft, the software giant. Their businesses aren’t tailored to changes in inflation, including the rise in gas, plastics, packaging and other prices, Cramer said.

Alphabet shares advanced 0.29% to close at $2,546.83, while Microsoft settled at $280.98, up 1.3% in the session.

Apple, which makes a range of devices, can be negatively affected by higher material costs. But the brand sells and those costs can be assumed by its customers, Cramer said. Apple stock moved 0.8% to $145.64 Tuesday.

Cramer said a stock like PepsiCo is an exception to the rule in the consumer packaged goods space. While the company will be saddled with higher input costs, including packaging and shipping, it can pass it on to consumers in the form of higher prices for drinks, chips and other products, he said.

Pepsi shares rallied 2.3% to close at $152.96 after the company posted a strong earnings report and raised its outlook.
