Automakers, dealers see low inventory after another huge month of sales

  • Why Coronavirus Has Left Automakers Desperate For Buyers

    12:46

Coronavirus has tanked auto sales in the United States. The virus struck the automotive industry after several years of record sales. It came just a decade after the industry essentially collapsed in the financial crisis. Now it is once again facing a potentially catastrophic threat, and this time it happens to be something the industry has never grappled with before.

Why Coronavirus Has Left Automakers Desperate For Buyers

  • Global chip shortage slows auto production, thins inventory

    2:10

The auto industry is among the hardest hit by the global chip shortage. Production has slowed and sales could be impacted through the end of the year. CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

General Motors is cutting overtime production this weekend at two U.S. assembly plants that make its highly profitable full-size pickups due to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage impacting the global automotive industry.

The plants in Flint, Michigan, and Fort Wayne, Indiana, produce a mix of the company’s full-size pickups, including the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 models as well as their larger siblings.

This is the first time the Detroit automaker has cut production shifts for its full-size pickups due to the monthslong chip shortage. GM has significantly reduced production at its car and crossover plants in North America to prioritize chips for the pickups as well as the company’s full-size SUVs.

In total, GM is eliminating three overtime shifts between the two plants on Saturday and Sunday.

“As we continue to manage the semiconductor impact on our plants, we are balancing parts availability with our ability to run efficiently for the entire week,” GM said in an emailed statement.

GM also produces the 1500 versions of the Silverado and Sierra pickup at a plant in Mexico.

In addition to the shift cuts, GM said Friday it is canceling scheduled downtime the weeks of June 28 and July 5 at all U.S. plants except a midsize truck plant in Missouri. GM hopes production during those weeks, which is traditionally known as a summer shutdown period, will assist in making up lost production from the first half of the year.

The changes come a day after GM and Ford Motor announced plans to temporarily idle or extend shutdowns at several plants in North America.

GM CEO Mary Barra and Ford CEO Jim Farley are expected to take part Monday in a virtual CEO summit with the Biden administration to discuss the global semiconductor shortage.

Semiconductors are key components in automotive manufacturing and are used in infotainment, power steering and braking systems, among other things. As multiple plants shuttered last year due to Covid, suppliers directed semiconductors away from automakers to other industries, creating a shortage after consumer demand snapped back stronger than expected. The automobile parts can contain several sizes and different types of chips.

For months, GM and Ford have been prioritizing assembly of high-margin vehicles such as full-size pickups by cutting production of cars and crossovers. The companies are even partially building pickups to complete and ship at a later date.

GM expects the chip shortage will reduce its operating profit by $1.5 billion to $2 billion this year, while Ford said the situation could lower its earnings by $1 billion to $2.5 billion in 2021.

Consulting firm AlixPartners estimates the chip shortage will cut $60.6 billion in revenue from the global automotive industry this year.

  • Why Americans Buy Cars From Dealerships

    14:56

Buying cars often feels like an anxiety-inducing ordeal that can last hours. Car dealers now face their challenges, including a consolidating dealership landscape, tight competition, and threats from new business models promoting contactless virtual transactions during the COVID-19 outbreaks. To survive, it looks like dealers will have to keep up and find ways to accommodate buyers with significant overhauls to the car dealership experience; some experts say the way we buy cars is changing forever.

  • Why Tiny Microchips Are Crippling The Global Auto Industry And Driving Up Prices

    10:11

While the automotive industry was ravaged early on in the pandemic thanks to lockdown measures and a dramatic decrease in travel, it more recently has begun facing a new problem: a shortage of microchips. Microchips are vital to much of a vehicle’s key functions, such as engine control, transmission, infotainment systems, and more.

In the last half of 2020 and now in 2021, vehicle sales recovered fairly quickly, faster than automakers anticipated. Suddenly, they were struggling to meet demand. At the same time, chipmakers were experiencing supply shortages and increased demand from other sectors, such as personal electronics.

With the resulting lack of microchip supply, automakers have been forced to slow production, even on their most popular models. For several automakers, the shortage is expected to cost them $1 billion or more — and even still, the alternatives are worryingly few.

  • Why Ford And Other American Cars Don’t Sell In Japan

    7:13

Some of the top-selling car brands in the United States are Japanese — Toyota, Honda, and Nissan especially. But the reverse isn't true – General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler combined make up only .3% of the Japanese auto market. With strict regulations, strong local manufacturing, and a particularly Japanese way of retailing cars, the country will likely continue to be a difficult place for American automakers.

  • Microchip shortage causing issues for car dealerships

    2:01

Perhaps you've heard about the global microchip shortage. It's affecting a lot of products, including cars, and local dealers are feeling it.

[It's] hampered our getting vehicles from the manufacturer, Greg Bumbu, executive vice president at Nick Mayer Auto Group, told 3News. We still have vehicles on the lot for sale, it's just our normal flow of vehicles is a lot less.

The Nick Mayer lot in Mayfield is typically full, but now? Not even close.

We're abut 80% down in inventory, Bumbu said. Normally, when we would have about 100 trucks, we now have about 20 in stock.

Auto dealers around the country are in the same boat as computer chips that serve as the brains of the vehicles aren't available. Ford, in particular, is stockpiling brand new pickup trucks at Kentucky Motor Speedway and other locations until the software once again becomes available.

Brandon Simmons has more on the shortage:

The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. We don’t hate Car Dealerships. Instead, we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
    A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
    1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
    2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
    3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
    4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.

THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
    1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
    2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
    3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
    4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.

THG didn’t give Car Dealers their Bad Reputation. For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED it by being the masters of predatory selling. They stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and often do. While the business has had record setting profits, Dealers never stop telling Car Buyers “We’re losing money!” That’s the bed Car Dealers custom built for themselves. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!

  • How Subaru Plans To Maintain Its Unlikely Success

    15:41

Subaru started as a small scrappy Japanese brand, brought to the states by a couple of American businessmen in the 1960s, and was quickly met with ridicule. But it persisted, and over the decades has gone from being a small niche player to one of the most successful brands in America.

Subaru has weathered economic recessions far better than much larger competitors, and it is positioned near the top of consumer satisfaction surveys. But the ever-changing auto market presents some challenges for them, and they need to adapt to keep up.

When Subaru entered the United States in the 1960s it was panned by critics, and actually advertised its own cheap ugliness.

Over the next several decades it would become a highly successful brand through a combination of offbeat but practical cars and a relentless focus on understanding its own customers.

The scrappy brand enjoyed a 93-month sales increase streak that ended in 2019, and it has found ways to survive during the coronavirus pandemic.

But it is not without challenges. The intense demand for its vehicles has at times brought growing pains -- quality issues and recalls gave led to an unusual quarterly loss in 2018.

There is also pressure on the company, like all automakers, to develop some kind of electrification strategy. Subaru does have a partnership with the much larger Japanese automaker Toyota, which is expected to soon produce an electric vehicle jointly made by the two companies.

• Former Ford CEO: Chip shortage could hit auto sector as badly as Covid

    2:35

Mark Fields, former president and CEO of Ford, joined Squawk Box on Monday to explain why he thinks the auto industry is approaching production loss levels equal to what the companies dealt with during the pandemic shutdown from last year as a result of the semiconductor shortage. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

General Motors will suspend production of its midsize pickup trucks due to a global semiconductor chip shortage. It’s the latest shutdown as the automaker prioritizes production of its larger, more profitable full-size pickups and SUVs.

Downtime at the Missouri plant will start Monday and run through April 12, according to a message sent to employees on Wednesday by the United Auto Workers union local. The plant produces GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado pickups. Van production at the facility will not be impacted, GM said.

GM will also pull ahead scheduled downtime for the plant by two weeks to May 24 through July 19 to “allow for more time to build product” during the second half of 2021, the union said. GM spokesman David Barnas confirmed the plans.

In addition to the pickups, Barnas said GM will extend downtime at a car plant in Michigan by two weeks to mid-April. GM has temporarily shuttered or cut production at several plants that produce cars or crossovers to prioritize production of its full-size pickups and SUVs.

“GM continues to leverage every available semiconductor to build and ship our most popular and in-demand products, including full-size trucks and SUVs for our customers,” Barnas said in an emailed statement. “We have not taken downtime or reduced shifts at any of our full-size truck plants due to the shortage.”

GM plants in Kansas and Ingersoll, Ontario, that shuttered in early February over the chip shortage are expected to remain closed until at least mid-April. Plants in Brazil and South Korea have also been affected. A plant in Mexico is expected to reopen April 5 after being shut down since Feb. 8.

GM’s actions come as the auto industry attempts to deal with the global chip shortage. Suppliers directed semiconductors away from the automotive industry as multiple plants shut down last year due to Covid. Consulting firm AlixPartners estimates the chip shortage will cut $60.6 billion in revenue from the global automotive industry this year.

Semiconductors are key components used in the infotainment, power steering and braking of new vehicles, among other systems. GM expects the chip shortage to cut $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion from its free cash flow in 2021.

GET AWESOME (THG) HOMEWORKGUY MERCHANDISE. SHOW DEALERS YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR NEXT CAR DEAL!

  • Why one of the nations largest car dealers says sales have been improving in recent weeks

    5:30

Bryan DeBoer, CEO of car dealer Lithia Motors, discusses how auto sales have trended during the COVID-10 pandemic, and how the company has adapted to accommodate potential car buyers, including home delivery and pickup.

Big discounts, low financing rates and states loosening restrictions on auto dealerships are assisting in a sales rebound heading into the end of April, according to J.D. Power.

Sales this month are still expected to be down about 50% compared with April 2019. However, the decline is far less than previously expected with the coronavirus pandemic wiping out the majority of sales for the month, the firm said Wednesday.

“We are now firmly in a period where we see sales of new vehicles start to recover,” Thomas King, president of the data and analytics division and chief product officer at J.D. Power, told CNBC. “We’re still severely depressed in terms of vehicle demand, but the good news is we have turned the corner in terms of the declines.”

King said 0% financing offers, big incentives from automakers and all states now allowing at least online vehicle sales all contributed to the rebounding sales, which are up 11 percentage points from the end of March.

J.D. Power reports 24 states, which represent 44% of 2019 retail sales, allow dealership sales operations to remain open. The other 26 states, which represent 56% of retail sales, are allowing only online or remote sales.

  • Cars & COVID-19 | The Future of Automotive After the Pandemic

    8:17

How will car dealerships & enthusiast groups/events change because of the COVID-19 Pandemic? We discuss our thoughts on the future of automotive.

PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here:

This episode of TestDrive Garage is a little different, as we enter the 7th full week of near-complete shutdown here in Québec, we want to talk about how the COVID-19 pandemic could affect the automotive world moving forward. We've already seen some pretty serious changes for journalists, the first couple weeks into this situation some manufacturers were still giving out vehicles in Québec, but that has all stopped, so our access to new vehicles to film is at a standstill.

Government shutdown orders are also affecting dealerships, while everything was to be closed after the first week, slowly the Gouvernement de Québec decided to allow automotive repair facilities to re-open for essential service vehicles. This has gradually increased to all types of vehicles, as Québecers look to get back to a normal life by using their cars, changing oil, and swapping out winter tires. It expected the sales side of dealerships will open around the 4th of May with other limited businesses.

But the way cars are being bought is changing because of this pandemic. Just because dealers aren't allowed to physically open their storefronts to customers, Québecers have been allowed to buy new cars online for the first time, giving dealerships a new avenue to drive business. Customers can configure a car online, and have a salesperson show up to their house with the car for a personalized test drive, and even sign the papers remotely if they want.

Manufacturers like Genesis have been working towards this already, with a nearly online-exclusive buying process. We expect to see other manufacturers look at Genesis for the sales and service experience in order to re-invent their own offerings to customers, as the in-person buying process will change at least for the foreseeable future. Businesses here in Canada are installing large plexiglass barriers between customers and staff, adding floor decals to ensure social distancing is adhered to, and limiting the number of customers allowed in a dealership at a given time. These measures will likely remain in place for some time, and may even become the new normal for life here in Canada.

We also go over some questions we hoped to ask the manufacturers specifically about the trends they're seeing from their dealership network across the country, however we reached out to 7 of the manufacturer groups that represent 20 vehicle brands sold in Canada and all 7 either declined or ignored our request for an interview.

We wrap up with our final thoughts on how the automotive landscape will change here in Canada and abroad because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how we can try to use this opportunity to reinvent ourselves and look for new approaches to doing business, as well as being social in club.

  • General Motors fourth quarter sales better than expected

    1:36

CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports on General Motors auto sales for its fourth quarter. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

U.S. auto sales for General Motors declined 11.8% in 2020 but showed strong signs of a recovery in the fourth quarter, the company said Tuesday.

GM’s domestic sales rose 4.8% during the last three months of last year compared with the same period in 2019. Retail sales for the entire auto industry returned to pre-pandemic levels in the fourth quarter, the company said. Commercial fleet customers also started to return toward the end of the year, it said.

GM’s strong fourth quarter is likely a good sign for the auto industry overall. The majority of automakers are scheduled to report their U.S. sales on Tuesday. Domestic vehicle sales in 2020 were expected to be off by at least 15% compared with 2019.

Toyota reported its U.S. sales declined 11.2% last year compared with 2019, while Hyundai said its sales were off about 10%.

GM said it gained market share among retail and fleet customers in the fourth quarter and for the full year.

“GM outperformed the industry in the quarter and the full year by a significant margin because our manufacturing and supply chain teams and dealers helped keep people safe at work and our launches on track,” Steve Carlisle, GM executive vice president and president, GM North America, said in a release.

The automaker’s sales during the year, including the fourth quarter, were largely led by sales of its pickup truck and SUVs. Other notable increases included the Chevrolet Corvette, up 20.2%; all-electric Chevrolet Bolt EV, up 26.4%, and Encore GX, a small crossover, topping the sales charts for Buick in its first year.

U.S. vehicle sales for GM were about 2.55 million vehicles in 2020 — the company’s lowest performance since 2.5 million in 2011. The company said fleet sales declined about 33%, while retail sales were off only 6%.

GM’s vehicle inventory levels remained significantly lower to end 2020 than the year earlier, off 33% to 410,875 units. The company’s inventory levels, especially of pickup trucks, have been a concern following a two-month shutdown of its North American plants last spring due to the coronavirus pandemic.

GM said it expects the broader U.S. economic recovery to continue in 2021, but the company declined to release a sales forecast for the year at this time.

“We look forward to an inflection point for the U.S. economy in spring,” GM chief economist Elaine Buckberg said in a statement. “Widening vaccination rates and warmer weather should enable consumers and businesses to return to a more normal range of activities, lifting the job market, consumer sentiment and auto demand.”

GET AWESOME (THG) HOMEWORKGUY MERCHANDISE. SHOW DEALERS YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR NEXT CAR DEAL!

The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. • What Happens to New Cars that Never Get Sold ?

    11:06

What Happens To New Cars That Don't Sell? If you’ve ever driven by a car dealership and seen the rows and rows of brand new cars, you’ve probably wondered what happens to the ones that never get sold.

Millions of cars are produced every year, not every car is sold. What happens to them? They don’t give them away. If the price is reduced too much it reduces the sales volume of the newer more expensive models.

With each vehicle representing $30,000 or more in retail pricing, the typical dealer doesn’t want to keep these vehicles in stock. Brand-new cars, trucks, and SUVs that aren’t sold can’t just sit on the dealer lot forever; their investment in them is too high. It is natural for a consumer to ask the question, so what do they do with all those cars that sit and don’t sell?

  • 2020 auto sales numbers, with Ford on tap

    4:43

CNBC's Phil LeBeau with a look at 2020 auto sales numbers so far. Ford reports tomorrow. With CNBC's Melissa Lee and the Fast Money traders, Guy Adami, Tim Seymour, Karen Finerman and Dan Nathan. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

U.S. auto sales for Ford Motor fell 15.6% last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, a decline in commercial fleet sales and tight inventories of its F-150 pickup trucks.

Sales of the popular full-size pickup tumbled by about 33% in the fourth quarter from the same time last year, the automaker reported Wednesday. The lower sales were attributed to lingering effects from factory shutdowns last spring due to Covid-19 as well as a changeover in production of the facilities to produce the redesigned F-150.

“We’re optimizing the production at both plants right now and it’s a matter of getting more F-150s out to our dealer lots,” Erich Merkle, Ford’s head of U.S. sales analysis, told CNBC. He said inventories of the F-150 were 141,000 units to end last year, down from 267,000 a year earlier.

Ford’s 2020 sales decline is expected to be in line with the overall U.S. automotive industry, which is projected to be off by about 15% to 14.5 million vehicles. That would be the lowest domestic sales since 2012. It also ends an unprecedented five-year streak of sales topping 17 million units.

Ford’s truck sales slid 11.3% in 2020, while SUVs were off by 9.7% year over year. Sales of passenger cars, which Ford is discontinuing, aside from key models such as the Mustang, plummeted 44.7% compared with 2019.

Andrew Frick, Ford vice president of U.S. and Canada sales, believes the company is well positioned this year from a product standpoint as it transitions away from passenger cars.

“Fourth quarter represented an inflection point at Ford in our transition from cars to a much greater focus on iconic trucks and SUVs to better serve our customers,” he said in a release. “We are well positioned to see the benefits of our focused efforts throughout 2021.”
