  • Beirut explosion: Drone footage shows devastating impact of explosion that killed 100 in Lebanon

    47

Subscribe to the Evening Standard on YouTube:

Aerial video filmed Wednesday showed the full scale of the destruction caused by a massive explosion in Beirut.

Rescue operations continued as dawn broke in Lebanon's capital on Wednesday morning, hours after the blast which flattened much of the city's port.

More than 100 people were killed and 4,000 injured, with bodies buried in the rubble, officials said.

It was not clear what caused the blast, which struck with the force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake and was felt as far away as Cyprus more than 200 kilometers (180 miles) across the Mediterranean.

Lebanon's interior minister said it appeared that a large cache of ammonium nitrate in the port had detonated.

  • Trump says Beirut explosion ‘was a bomb, his generals ‘don’t think it was an accident’

    1:06

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the deadly Beirut explosion that killed dozens and flattened a vast area of the Lebanese city was caused by a bomb.

The president offered US help and said the country is ready to assist following the devastating aftermath of what he described as a terrible attack.

The United States stands ready to assist Lebanon, Trump said at a Tuesday evening White House briefing.

We will be there to help. It looks like a terrible attack.

When asked if he was confident the deadly blast was an attack and not an accident, Trump responded: It seemed like it, based on the explosion.

I've met with some of our great generals and they just seem to feel it was, he said.

This was not some kind of a manufacturing explosion type of event. This was a - seems to be according to them - they would know better than I would.

But they seem to think it was an attack, a bomb of some kind, Trump added.

  • Lebanon: Video Shows Home, Restaurant Damaged in Beirut Blast

    29

At least 70 people are dead and more than 3,500 injured following a massive explosion that rocked Beirut, Tuesday, August 4, flattening much of the port, and damaging buildings across the capital.
    –––––––––
READ MORE: At least 70 are dead and 3,500 injured after a massive explosion Tuesday rocked the port area of Beirut in what a Red Cross official called a “huge catastrophe.”

Much of the port was destroyed, and buildings and parked cars across the Lebanese capital were heavily damaged.

Ambulances carried the wounded away from the area hours after the blast. As night fell, the exact cause of the explosion was unknown.

A Lebanese television station said officials suspect highly explosive sodium nitrate stored at the port may have been involved. People reported seeing an orange-colored cloud hovering over the blast site. Experts say such clouds usually accompany explosions involving nitrates.

  • Beirut Explosion: Aerial Video Reveals Full Extent of Damage

    1:14

A massive explosion at Lebanon’s main port rocked Beirut, overwhelming hospitals dealing with the injured and dying. The blast was so large it blew out windows across the capital and was even heard from Cyprus.

Authorities say it was caused by highly explosive materials at the port, but didn’t say whether it was an accident or an attack. The casualty toll continued to climb through the night, with Sky News Arabia putting the number of dead at 78 in the early morning hours of Wednesday. The health minister had said around 11 p.m. that 67 people were killed and some 3,600 injured.

Video footage showed what appeared to be a fire, followed by crackling lights and then a much larger explosion as an enormous cloud of smoke rapidly engulfed the area around the Port of Beirut. Buildings in the area and miles away were severely damaged, including the electricity company and other government entities.

The price of oil climbed to the highest level in almost two weeks as the blast stoked fears over instability in the region. U.S. benchmark crude futures climbed 1.7%.

The aftermath of the explosion left people rushing for help on foot and motorbikes, some with blood streaming over their faces, outside a Beirut hospital. One hospital said it had taken in 400 people and others appealed for blood donations, saying they’d reached their capacity.

President Donald Trump said in Washington that U.S. military officials “seem to think it was an attack. It was a bomb of some kind.” He said he “met with some of our great generals and they just seem to feel that it was. This was not some kind of a manufacturing explosion type of event.”

U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo expressed his condolences and said in a statement, “We are closely monitoring and stand ready to assist the people of Lebanon as they recover from this tragedy.”

The explosion took place during the first of a two-day grace period that the government had given citizens before it reinforces a full lockdown with a curfew to contain the coronavirus epidemic after the country saw a major spike in cases in recent weeks.

Beirut and its suburbs are home to many embassies, nongovernmental organizations and most government entities and agencies as well as ministries and headquarters of political parties. The general secretary of the Kataeb Party, Nizar Najarian, was killed in the explosion. He was chairing a meeting for the party at its headquarters, near the site of the blast.

Debris has covered the entire port, damaging trucks and other shipping containers. Black smoke could still be seen billowing into the sky hours after the blast. The port receives handles 6 million tons of shipments a year and is the country’s main port.

Lebanon is reeling under its worst financial and economic crisis, with a sharp plunge in its local currency eroding purchasing power and throwing many into poverty and unemployment. The government is in talks with the International Monetary Fund for a $10 billion bailout and has tried to collect aid from Gulf countries, but to no avail.

Gulf countries are wary that any funds would be channeled to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group that’s listed by those countries and the U.S. as a terrorist group. The foreign minister resigned earlier this week, saying Lebanon could become a failed state.

A shortage of U.S. dollars has wreaked havoc on an economy almost completely reliant on imported goods. The central bank is using whatever is left of its reserves to subsidize the import of wheat, fuel and medicine and has recently said it would help import essential food items, albeit at a weaker exchange rate.

President Donald Trump: Generals Think Beirut Explosion 'Was A Bomb Of Some Kind' | NBC News NOW

  • Donald Trump claims Lebanon explosion looks like a terrible attack

    1:09

Donald Trump made an unsubstantiated claim that the massive explosion in Beirut was a bomb attack during a press briefing at the White House.

When asked why he called the blast an attack, not an accident, the president said that he had met with generals who felt it was 'a bomb of some kind'. Soon after, CNN quoted Pentagon officials as saying there was no evidence of any attack, raising the question of where Trump got his information.

The Beirut government says the explosion was caused by a warehouse full of ammonium nitrate igniting, though the initial cause of the fire is still unclear

Beirut's port was strewn with smouldering wreckage on Wednesday, one day after deadly explosions rocked the area.

Tuesday afternoon's explosions left at least 100 dead, with roughly 4,000 wounded according to the latest figures from the Lebanese Red Cross, with the numbers of dead and wounded expected to rise further.

The blasts are thought to have been caused by the still unexplained ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

Results of an investigation into the causes of the explosions are expected to be released in the next five days.

  • Explosión Beirut Líbano SACERDOTE DEBE HUIR en media misa

    22

Rescue workers in Lebanon are searching for more than a hundred people who are missing after a huge explosion devastated the port area of the capital Beirut on Tuesday.

The blast killed at least 100 people and injured more than 4,000 others.

The whole city was shaken by the explosion and a mushroom cloud could be seen spreading over the port area.

President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse.

Ammonium nitrate is used as a fertiliser in agriculture and as an explosive.
He scheduled an urgent cabinet meeting for Wednesday, and said a two-week state of emergency should be declared.

The country will observe an official period of mourning for three days from Wednesday.

    What happened?

The explosion occurred just after 18:00 (15:00 GMT) on Tuesday after a fire at the port.

Lebanon: Why the country is in crisis

Eyewitness Hadi Nasrallah says that he saw the fire but did not expect the blast. I lost my hearing for a few seconds, I knew something was wrong, and then suddenly the glass just shattered all over the car, the cars around us, the shops, the stores, the buildings. Just glass going down from all over the building.

It’s a question I get asked a lot lately, most recently during a radio interview I did this morning. With so much that’s happened this year in Lebanon–and the world–it’s easy to forget how massive the crowds once were, as seen in these protest tours we did in downtown Beirut late last year.

The occupation of public spaces (and privately owned parking lots) was unprecedented, not just in Beirut but across the country. Although there have been many protests here before, what was different this time is that they were not organized by political parties, but largely by civil society groups and activist organizations that set up their own tents to discuss the country’s future.

It felt like a true agora of democracy, people finally taking power into their own hands after so many years of oppression and dysfunction. I was so excited, I could barely contain myself.

  • Trumps car crash interview claiming US coronavirus deaths ‘lower than the world’

    1:10

Donald Trump has claimed the United States is ‘lower than the world’ for coronavirus in an HBO Axios interview hailed a 'car crash'.

The president was grilled on his handling of the pandemic by Axios reporter Jonathan Swan.

When the exchange turned to the spiralling number of coronavirus deaths across the US, Trump furiously shuffled some pieces of A4 paper showing some colourful bar charts.

He then claimed the US is ‘lowest in numerous categories’, by which point, the very confused interviewer tells the President that he was asking about death as a proportion of population, not death as a proportion of cases.

  • Before and after: Photos of #Beirut port show extensive #explosion #damage | NEWZEE

    19

Beirut's port district was left a tangled wreck following a massive warehouse explosion on Tuesday (August 4), killing at least 100 people and injuring nearly 4,000.
The port area was left in ruin, disabling the nation's main route for imports needed to feed a nation of more than 6 million people. Lebanon has already been struggling to house and feed hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria.
Lebanese rescue workers dug through rubble on Wednesday (August 5) looking for survivors after the blast, which was the most powerful ever to rip through Beirut, a city still scarred by civil war three decades ago and reeling from an economic meltdown and a surge in coronavirus infections.
An official source familiar with preliminary investigations blamed the incident on negligence. Ordinary Lebanese directed anger at politicians who have overseen decades of state corruption and bad governance that plunged the nation into financial crisis.
The intensity of the blast threw victims into the sea and rescue teams were still trying to recover bodies. Many of those killed were port and custom employees and people working in the area or driving through during rush hour.
Facades of central Beirut buildings were ripped off, furniture was sucked into streets and roads were strewn with glass and debris. Cars near the port were flipped over.

What’s the worst that could happen to us? We could fall into a tar pit, lose limbs in a car crash, burn in a forest fire.

What’s the worst that could happen to us? Take a bullet in the stomach then drown in the bloodbath. Or we could just break up.

What’s the worst that could happen to us? We could lose all our money, surrender to an illness, finally give up hope.

What’s the worst that could happen to us? Disagree on the meaning of life and such things. Then we could just break up.

  • Suffering remains one month on from Beirut blast

    3:30

(4 Sep 2020) One month after the catastrophic explosion of 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate in Beirut's port, the Lebanese capital is still suffering.
The massive blast killed 191 people, injured more than 6,000 and is considered one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions ever recorded.
Thousands of homes were damaged and large areas of Beirut destroyed.
The World Bank last week estimated that Lebanon incurred 3.8-4.6 billion US dollars worth of damage.
In the the street parallel to the port of Beirut in the Mar Mikhael neighbourhood, residents are suffering from a lack of government aid.
Joseph Mitri, a 45 year old resident said that in 15 seconds his house lost its ceiling.
He complained of the failure of the Lebanese state to provide logistical assistance, funds for reconstruction and the lack of interest of the non-governmental organisations.
An unprecedented economic crisis had already cost the Lebanese currency more than 80% of its value, driving unemployment, poverty and inflation through the roof.
With the financial crisis draining the country and poverty affecting nearly half of the population, the future of companies impacted by the explosion remains uncertain.
In his scooter centre, Robert Hajj called on the banks to release his money in order to fix his destroyed building and replace his stock.
Since a nationwide protest that erupted in October 2019, the Lebanese have lost faith in their political ruling system.
People are now calling for early parliamentary elections and a new government that excludes figures from the current political parties.
Jad Nasr, whose house above his pub was destroyed, called for financial help that goes nowhere near his country's politicians.
In another chilling reminder of the horrific explosion a month ago, the Lebanese military said it discovered a large deposit of ammonium nitrate near Beirut's port on Thursday.
The military statement said that customs officials had called in the army to inspect containers at a facility near the port, where they found 4.35 tons of ammonium nitrate.
It said army experts were dealing with the material, apparently destroying it.
There were no details on the origin of the chemicals or their owner.

    STORYLINE:
A truck carrying 25 tons of an ammonium nitrate-based explosive collided with another vehicle in northern Mexico and later exploded, killing at least 28 people and injuring 154 others, state and federal officials said on Monday.
Of the injured, 52 remained in hospital on Monday night, five with serious head injuries and several suffered an amputation or mutilation of a limb from the explosion.
An eyewitness said he saw parts from the truck flying through the air.
The incident occurred in Coahuila about 200 kilometres (125 miles) southwest of the US border on Sunday evening.
The accident was apparently made more deadly due to a delay of at least a half hour between the crash and the explosion, and the fact that many of those who responded to the scene may not have known that the truck was carrying explosive materials used in mining.
The wreckage then caught fire and the truck's cargo, an ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture blew up, sending a ball of fire into the sky that damaged nearby cars and left a 3-by-15-meter (10-by-40 foot) crater in the ground.
There was a transit accident caused by a truck loaded with explosives. It crashed and then the explosion came after that, said Federal Police commander, Oscar Garcia.
Investigators from the Attorney General's Office were at the scene of the explosion collecting evidence on Monday.
Federal officials said they did not know what caused the initial crash.
Authorities had earlier placed the death toll at 34, but the governor of Coahuila state, Humberto Moreira, said only 28 bodies had been officially recovered.
Authorities earlier acknowledged that some bodies, were so difficult to identify, that they had been counted twice accidentally.
Moreira said 67 homes and about 50 vehicles were damaged by the blast.

Such a committee should have the widest possible judicial mandate to investigate the assassination of (former) Prime Minister Rafik Hariri with a view to establishing the entire truth and bringing to justice all instigators, perpetrators, connivers, and anyone who had any part in this crime, and imposing the harshest punishment on them.
    11. Jalloul looks down

    STORYLINE:

Lebanon's top opposition politician on Saturday renewed call for the country's Syrian-backed security chiefs to resign following a UN report
blaming Damascus for stoking tensions that may have led to the assassination of former premier Rafik Hariri.

The report does not directly assign blame in the killing but says Syria is primarily responsible for the tensions that may have led up to it.

The report said Syria's president personally threatened Hariri with harm for his opposition to Damascus' domination. The UN also criticised Lebanon for a half-hearted investigation into who killed Hariri in a Feb. 14 bomb blast.

In an interview with APTN, Opposition leader and MP Walid Jumblatt also accused Syrian security forces of the car bombings that have wracked Beirut in the past week, and he urged security forces to leave Lebanon.

We know that they are the ones who are planting the car bombs and we know that maybe we will be having more terror scenes but their game is up now. Let them leave us. The sword of international justice will remain above their heads, said Jumblatt, speaking in his home town of Mokhtara in Mount Lebanon.

Hariri's bloc in parliament held a meeting overnight.

Afterward, MP Ghenwa Jalloul delivered a statement urging the UN Security Council to send an investigation team to Lebanon.

The UN fact-finding team reported, in a document released on Thursday, that Lebanon's own inquiry into Hariri's killing was seriously flawed.

They called for an international investigation, but said investigators were unlikely to carry out their task satisfactorily if the Lebanese security chiefs stayed, bolstering a top demand of Lebanon's anti-Syrian opposition.

Hariri is a volatile issue for both Syria and Lebanon.

His death sparked massive demonstrations in Lebanon that shook Syria's domination of its politics, disrupting the government and helping force Damascus to pull back its 14,000 troops in Lebanon. Many Lebanese accuse the governments in Beirut and Damascus of being behind the slaying, a claim both vehemently deny.
