    About:
Neil deGrasse Tyson born on October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, and science communicator. Since 1996, he has been the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York City. The center is part of the American Museum of Natural History, where Tyson founded the Department of Astrophysics in 1997 and has been a research associate in the department since 2003.

Born and raised in New York City, Tyson became interested in astronomy at the age of nine after a visit to the Hayden Planetarium. After graduating from the Bronx High School of Science, where he was editor-in-chief of the Physical Science Journal, he completed a bachelor's degree in physics at Harvard University in 1980. After receiving a master's degree in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin in 1983, he earned his master's (1989) and doctorate (1991) in astrophysics at Columbia University. For the next three years, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University. In 1994 he joined the Hayden Planetarium as a staff scientist and the Princeton faculty as a visiting research scientist and lecturer. In 1996, he became director of the planetarium and oversaw its $210-million reconstruction project, which was completed in 2000.

From 1995 to 2005, Tyson wrote monthly essays in the Universe column for Natural History magazine, some of which were published in his book Death by Black Hole (2007). During the same period, he wrote a monthly column in Star Date magazine, answering questions about the universe under the pen name Merlin. Material from the column appeared in his books Merlin's Tour of the Universe (1998) and Just Visiting This Planet (1998). Tyson served on a 2001 government commission on the future of the U.S. aerospace industry, and on the 2004 Moon, Mars and Beyond commission. He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal in the same year. From 2006 to 2011, he hosted the television show NOVA ScienceNow on PBS. Since 2009, Tyson hosted the weekly podcast StarTalk. A spin-off, also called StarTalk, began airing on National Geographic in 2015. In 2014, he hosted the television series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, a successor to Carl Sagan's 1980 series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.[1] The U.S. National Academy of Sciences awarded Tyson the Public Welfare Medal in 2015 for his extraordinary role in exciting the public about the wonders of science

  • The Multiverse Hypothesis Explained by Neil deGrasse Tyson

    10:03

The multiverse hypothesis or theory holds that a group of multiple universes (possibly infinite universes) comprise everything that exists: The entirety of space, time, matter, energy, information, and the physical laws and constants that describe them. The renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explains in detail the multiverse hypothesis.

However, prominent physicists are divided about whether any other universes exist outside of our own. Some even go as far as to say that the multiverse is not a legitimate topic of scientific inquiry. Because it can not be empirically falsified. But Neil deGrasse Tyson among other prominent cosmologists, thinks that given our understanding of quantum mechanics and the theory of General relativity, the possibility of the existence of the multiverse is a legitimate scientific hypothesis.

Steven Weinberg said that if the multiverse existed, the hope of finding a rational explanation for the precise values of quark masses and other constants of the standard model that we observe in our Big Bang is doomed, for their values would be an accident of the particular part of the multiverse in which we live.

Some scientists analyzed the data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, an uncrewed spacecraft operating from 2001 to 2010 that measured temperature differences across the sky in the cosmic microwave background, the radiant heat remaining from the Big Bang, and claimed they found evidence suggesting that our universe collided with other parallel universes in the distant past.

However, a more thorough data analysis from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe and from the Planck Satellite, a space observatory operated by the European Space Agency from 2009 to 2013, which mapped the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background, did not find any statistically significant evidence of universe collisions. there was no evidence of any gravitational pull of other universes on ours either. And to add insult to injury to the proponents that the multiverse hypothesis has been backed up by statistical evidence, the Planck satellite, has a resolution three times higher than the WMA Probe.

Our brains are not evolutionarily equipped to intuitively understand quantum mechanics and large scale cosmic phenomena. But Neil deGrasse Tyson with his usual wits explains the multiverse hypothesis in layman's terms.

  • The Future of Colonizing Space- Neil deGrasse Tyson- WGS 2018

    1:19:52

Space missions need to have a defensive component or economic benefit. With economic returns often uncertain, space programmes have tended to be led by governments, because only they can invest in programmes that have a long-term pay-off, whether economic or geopolitical. When it comes to saving humanity from an asteroid impact, Tyson stressed that rather than establishing colonies in space, we would be better to try to deflect the asteroid.

  • Things You Thought You Knew - Metric system, acceleration, and heat shields with Neil deGrasse Tyson

    41:25

Metric system, acceleration, and heat shields, Oh my! On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice run us through some things you thought you knew: the metric system in the U.S., speed versus acceleration, and heat shields.

Why isn’t the U.S. on the metric system? Are there any problems that arise, since we’re not? What even is a meter? Discover the history behind the meter. Are we already inching toward the metric system? We break down why we may be using the metric system more in our daily lives than we originally thought.

Do you feel the need… the need for speed?! We break down why this might actually be a need for acceleration. Find out about vectors, velocity, and the motion of the earth. Have you ever timed how long it takes for a car to go from zero to 60? You’ll learn about “jerk” as a change of acceleration and what it does to the human body. What does it mean to “feel” speed and the road? We talk cars, planes, and why you can drink a glass of water in a turning airplane without spilling.

Do heat shields actually shield you from heat? What are heat shields really for? We explore objects entering Earth’s orbit. Do these objects always heat up when they enter our atmosphere? We talk about retrorockets versus aerobraking and how they are both used to land spacecraft in different places. How does landing on Mars differ from landing on Earth or the Moon? Discover our world in another episode of Things You Thought You Knew!

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Lecture @ UW 5/12/2011 FULL

    2:23:07

{Edit 8/27/2019} Due to the number of ignorant people constantly whining about the camera work (which I didn't do), or the introduction (which I was not involved in), or the blatant racism (which is not tolerated) - I have decided to close the comment section. I feel that after 7+ years of constant, ignorant comments, that it is better to simply shut it off. I apologize to those who actually had thoughtful, intelligent exchanges in the comments. But enough is enough.

Neil deGrasse Tyson gives a wonderful lecture at the University of Washington; covering Astronomy, Sociology, and Scientific development in an entertaining lecture.

    NDT Shows up around 7:49

Please note that this video is for Educational purposes, and as such is posted under terms of Fair Use. It is important that education passes through on all mediums to those who wish to learn - and thank you, the viewer, for seeking to expand your knowledge.

Another Note: I was not physically present at this lecture. I am not the camera man. The Camera man did what he could to keep NDT on the camera while also paying attention to the slides. Sometimes he didn't catch the slides. If he focused on the slides only, there would be a crop of complainers that they never showed NDT. So before you add to the complaint list about the Camera Man's work, then either stop watching this video, or upload your own - Complaints do nothing but try to show how smart you were that you have something negative to say.
