Nasa successfully launched the James Webb Space Telescope, which the US space agency hopes will unlock the secrets of the early universe.

Nasa administrator Bill Nelson warned ahead of the launch that “over 300 things” could go wrong and scupper the launch of the $10 billion observatory, which was previously pushed back from 24 December due to poor weather conditions at the launch site in French Guinea.

Once in space, the James Webb telescope will attempt to look back in time 13.7 billion years towards stars and galaxies formed during the early stages of the universe’s creation.

  • James Webb Space Telescope launches into space on Christmas Day

    43:48

The biggest and most powerful space telescope ever built is ready to be among the stars.

NASA is getting ready for a Christmas Day launch of its James Webb Space Telescope that plans to rewrite what we know about the universe.

The giant sun shield, the size of a tennis court, will travel one million miles away from Earth to peer back in time to the early days of the universe we call home.

Equipped with the most state-of-the-art technology ever launched into space, Webb will dazzle us with the most detailed images of the cosmos ever captured, according to NASA.

Webb's job is to act as a window into the past to help reveal the first stars and galaxies that formed after the Big Bang. According to the nation's top space agency, the period of time from approximately 13.5 billion years ago is something we know little about.

Imagery from Webb will allow scientists to uncover the mysteries of how galaxies evolve over time and how the first stars assembled into galaxies.

To do this, Webb will use an infrared telescope to study and explore every phase of our cosmic history.

When Webb isn’t unlocking the secrets of our early universe, it will search for potential signs of habitability that may be present on worlds beyond our own, NASA wrote.

At the launch site on Friday night, teams successfully completed encapsulation of the observatory inside the Ariane 5 rocket that will launch it to space.

The most complex telescope ever made has finally launched into space after almost 30 years of planning.

At 12:20pm on Christmas Day, the $10billion spacecraft took off from French Guiana.

Twenty-seven minutes after take-off the top part of the Ariana 5 rocket containing the six-tonne spacecraft separated from the main body of the rocket and a video feed from the now redundant rocket captured the moment the telescope's solar panel array unfurled and began operating.

These solar panels will power the telescope for the duration of its ten year lifespan and the engineers at the mission control centre erupted into applause and cheers.

Commentators on the Nasa live stream said: It was a perfect ride to orbit and all of the separation sequence events are running in good fashion.

It will take a month before it reaches its final destination one million miles away from Earth.

The world's largest and most powerful telescope built to date was designed to help us study the earliest days of the universe and unlock some of its greatest mysteries.
The agency’s James Webb Space Telescope, the world’s largest and most powerful telescope built to date, successfully blasted into orbit Saturday. The launch marked the long-awaited start of the Webb telescope’s mission, after more than 30 years of development and countless delays.

The $10-billion observatory billed as the successor to the iconic Hubble Space Telescope, is designed to study the early days of the universe, roughly 100 million years after the Big Bang, when the first stars flickered on in the cosmos.

The tennis court-sized observatory launched atop an Ariane 5 rocket at 7:20 a.m. ET from a European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The observatory’s liftoff had been postponed several times, including earlier this month to investigate a faulty data cable and more recently because of bad weather at the South American launch site.

    2:14:26

  • NASA to launch James Webb Space Telescope on Christmas Day

    2:25

가시밭길 뚫은 ‘제임스 웹 우주망원경’ 25일 발사···크리스마스 선물 될까?

The most powerful space telescope in human history, will be blasting off into space on Christmas Day.
Initially the launch was planned for December 24th, but poor weather conditions led to a postponement.
Kim Cheong-ah gets us better acquainted with the James Webb.
It has taken 15 years but finally NASA's James Webb Space Telescope is set to be launched into space on Christmas Day.
It's the biggest and most powerful telescope ever made and at 10 billion U.S. dollars, it is also the most expensive.

Named after James Webb, the man who led NASA during the 1960s, the 7-ton space telescope is 100-times more powerful than the Hubble.
It's been designed to look deeper into the Universe and detect events as far back as 13-point-5 billion years ago, near the time of the Big Bang.

What Webb is going to do, it's going to push beyond that, and it's going to be sensitive to galaxies that are more distant and younger that really formed closer to the start of the universe. So in that way, we're going to see towards the beginning of the universe closer than ever before with Webb.

It's infrared vision is so powerful it can detect the heat of a bumblebee on the moon.
It is equipped with mirrors the size of several car parking spots and its sunshade is the size of a tennis court.
But, while being dubbed the heir to the Hubble telescope, experts say the two shouldn't be compared.

James Webb Space Telescope is often called the successor to the Hubble telescope, but that's really slightly a misnomer because, first of all, the Hubble telescope still operating, and may operate for another five or 10 years, if we're lucky. And secondly, it's a very different kind of telescope. The Hubble telescope is optimized to see the part of the universe that our eyes can see, whereas the James Webb telescope is optimized to see in the infrared part of the spectrum, which gives us a whole different set of information about the universe.

Currently, the blast off is scheduled for the 25th at around 9:20 PM Korea Time.
But even if the lift off is successful, the most daunting part of the mission will be unfolding the gigantic mirror and sunshield and locking them into position.
NASA has never attempted such a complicated series of steps remotely and many of the mechanisms don't have backups.
NASA, then, will be hoping for something of a Christmas miracle.
    Kim Cheong-ah, Arirang News.

What is the James Webb Space Telescope? On this explainer, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice explain the JWST and all the science behind it with the help of Chief NASA scientist Jim Green.

What is JWST looking for? Will it be a replacement for Hubble? We explore the different wavelengths of light and how JWST will let us peer into the past. Is JWST essentially a time machine? What sort of objects will it help us see? Can it track objects within our solar system? We break down where the telescope will be pointed first and where it will be launched to. How far away will the JWST be from Earth? What is L2 and where is it? Finally, we attempt (and fail) at getting over the excitement of launching something that has never existed before!

  • An astrophysicist’s live reaction to the James Webb Space Telescope Launch

    11:38

Live from a kitchen cooking a Christmas turkey in Lancashire, England, I very nervously watched the (successful!) launch of JWST. The telescope has since successfully separated from the main stage of the rocket. Now it’s just another nervous wait over the next few weeks as it travels to L2 and unfolds.

????????‍???? I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford. I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

  • James Webb Space Telescope: How will it work? - BBC News

    4:39

The BBC’s science editor Rebecca Morelle on how the observatory hopes to capture the history of our Universe.

The $10bn James Webb telescope has left Earth on its mission to show the first stars to light up the Universe.

The observatory was lifted skyward by an Ariane rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana.

Its flight to orbit lasted just under half an hour, with a signal confirming a successful outcome picked up by a ground antenna at Malindi in Kenya.

Webb, named after one of the architects of the Apollo Moon landings, is the successor to the Hubble telescope.

Engineers working with the US, European and Canadian space agencies have built the new observatory to be 100 times more powerful, however.

    1:21:03

    #BrianGreene #NASA #JWST #UnfoldTheUniverse
The powerful James Webb Space Telescope--the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope--promises insight into profound questions that have dogged philosophers and astronomers for millennia. What is the origin of the universe? How are stars and planets created? Is there life elsewhere in the universe? Brian Greene brings together four scientists who will use the Webb to investigate these very questions: John C. Mather, NASA’s lead scientist on the project and a Nobel Laureate; Natalie Batalha, NASA’s lead scientist on the Kepler Mission, which discovered the first rocky planets outside our solar system; Adam Riess, who earned a Nobel Prize for his revelations about the expansion rate of the universe; and Ewine van Dishoeck, a Kavli Laureate for her pioneering work in the field of astrochemistry.

This program is part of the Big Ideas series, supported by the John Templeton Foundation.

  • Christmas Day launch confirmed for James Webb Space Telescope

    2:13

After a one-day delay to assess threatening weather, mission managers decided to press ahead with plans to launch the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope on Christmas Day, NASA announced Wednesday.
Arianespace, the European consortium that markets and launches Ariane 5 rockets, now plans to haul the space telescope and its booster to the launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana, on Thursday. That will clear the way for a launch attempt at 7:20 a.m. EST Saturday, the opening of a 32-minute window.
Engineers originally planned to launch Webb, the largest and most expensive science probe ever built, on December 18. But the flight was delayed four days because of problems with a rocket attachment fitting and then another two days due to trouble with data drop outs in a telemetry cable.

NASA and ESA then reset launch for Christmas Eve, only to order another delay to at least Saturday because of stormy weather. After reviewing the weather outlook again on Wednesday, mission managers confirmed the December 25 target date.
The James Webb Space Telescope is designed to capture infrared light from the first stars and galaxies to form in the aftermath of the Big Bang some 13.8 billion years ago.
If all goes well, the Ariane 5 will put the observatory on a trajectory toward a parking spot a million miles from Earth on the far side of the moon where it can operate in a sort of gravitational eddy, cooled to within a few degrees of absolute zero using a sunshade the size of a tennis court.
Folded up to fit inside the Ariane 5's nose cone, Webb's five-layer sunshade, its segmented primary mirror and a secondary mirror mounted on a folding tripod, are scheduled to unfold and lock into place during the first two-and-a-half weeks after launch.
Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, which could be serviced by spacewalking shuttle astronauts, Webb will be beyond the reach of any foreseeable service calls.
