In “Balan the Blowpipe Maker,” filmmaker Ross Harrison introduces viewers to an indigenous Malaysian elder and craftsman. Only a few elders of Borneo’s Penan tribe still know how to make their unique hunting tool, the blowpipe. Balan is the last person in his village who practices the craft, says Harrison.
This short video incorporates footage from Harrison’s 30-minute documentary Sunset Over Selungo, which focuses on rain forest protection and land rights in Malaysian Borneo.

  • Pigeon Blood Rubies from Burma documentary of Patrick Voillot

    Italian :
    Spanish :
    Chinese :
    Russian :
    Japanese :
Pigeon Blood Red Rubies from Burma are the rarest, most expensive rubies in the world. The best come from Mogok, a town in the Mandalay Division of Myanmar, near the Chinese border, and closed to all foreigners.

This film takes you into the heart of the region described in Joseph Kessel’s famous mid-twentieth century novel, The Valley of Rubies.

The adventure begins in Rangoon, visiting one of the greatest of Buddhist Temples, the Shwedagon Pagoda, where by reaching the summit; you will have the privilege of contemplating the priceless diamonds and precious jewels adorning the top.

The next part will take you to Mandalay, which has long been host to the Kings of Burma. This is the city where the white marble sculptors work to create the Buddhist monuments.
Then further north, you will enter into the sanctuary of jewels: Mogok, Burma. Many have desired entry, few have had the opportunity.

In this movie, you will discover the traditions and ancestral myths of the inhabitants in this country. As close to mining as you've ever been; you will enter into the galleries leading to the dark bowels of the earth where miners dig the walls with dynamite. You will also be among those who ‘sort’ at the end of each day in the alluvium screen giants. Before your very eyes, miners will extract stones of the most beautiful of red colored stones, called pigeon blood rubies. These gemstones are of exceptional rarity. The Burmese say that seeing one is like seeing the face of God.

You will enter into a world of secrets: mines operated by the military, wealthy merchants who have gems of inestimable value, and finally, markets where the only food for sale are gemstones.

Then you will be invited into the most prohibited of annual auctions in the world, the Emporium in Yangon. Official sales of rubies, jade, pearls and other precious stones from Burma were made in this incredible building.

Finally, you can muse over the creations of jeweler Fred Place Vendôme in Paris.

    12:32

For its opera season premiere, the Staatstheater Cottbus is staging Carmen”, the tale of passion, jealousy and tragedy set to music by Georges Bizet. Rehearsals were held through November under strict precautions. But will it ever premiere?

Conductor Mario Venzago and director Stephan Märki have never rehearsed like this before. How can they keep an ensemble's morale up if they don't even know when or if the production they're working so hard on will go on stage? And that's not their only problem. Their singers have to stay shut away behind Plexiglas walls and compete with air purifiers. The climactic stage kiss is blocked by masks. And how can the choir singers maintain the required distance from one another? One thought keeps them going strong through it all: there's no quitting - culture must go on, even - and especially - in the time of corona. A report by Axel Rowohlt.

    1:26:17

    Sheldon Solomon, PhD
Professor of psychology at Skidmore College and co-author of
The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life

Cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker won a Pulitzer Prize in 1974 for The Denial of Death, arguing that fear of death is “the mainspring of human activity,” but his ideas were generally dismissed as philosophical speculation. Sheldon Solomon and his colleagues Jeff Greenberg and Tom Pyszczynski developed Terror Management Theory (TMT) to substantiate Becker’s claim that
death awareness has a profound and pervasive effect on our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in almost every domain of life. Find out how intimations of mortality influence everything from the
mundane to the momentous—what you ate for lunch, whom you voted for in the last election, how judges make legal decisions, your attitudes about shopping, your mental health and physical well being, whom you love, and whom you hate.

  • Sandakan Memorial Park Borneo - World War 2 History

    18:22

Today we will be visiting sandakan memorial park in borneo and learning the history of what happend here during world war 2.

This memorial park is built on a prisoner of war camp that the japanese created to hold allied soldiers. These allied soldiers were from countries like australia britain malaysian and many more countries.

The japanese forced all prisoners of war to build them a airfield aswell as railways to be able to get a foothold in the war. The prisoners were treated very badly and many of them starved or died of disease or tiredness. After suffering so much the troops still tried there best to halt the japanese even in these bad conditions by sabataging machinery and other things to slow them down.

The japanese also took the rest of the prisoners of war on death marches which started from sandakan and ended in ranau which was around 260km. Most of the pow's died during these marches.

We did not no about anything that happend in malaysia during world war 2 so this was a massive learning experience for us on our history.

These types of days are quite sad when you read what happend here but its very important to learn about it and to pay your respects to the sacrifices made for us by many people

The Dayak ancestors who live amid lush forests with towering tree trees and inhabited by a variety of wild animals and wild animals, inspire for the Dayak's ancestors to make weapons that not only protect themselves from the ferocity of forest life but also have been able to sustain the existence of their survival. Such living conditions have motivated the Dayak ancestors to make weapons called blowgun Blowgun as weapons equipped with blowgun called damak. Damak made of bamboo, stick and the like are tapered and given sharp-sharp so that after the target is left in the victim's body. In its use damak smeared with poison. Poison blowgun smeared on the damak where the ingredients used are very dangerous, a little scratched it can cause death. Poison blowgun can be made from a combination of various sap of a particular tree and can also be made from animals. Along with the development of blowgun, era began to be abandoned by Dayak young people. To avoid the typical weapons of this high-end Dayak blowgun from extinction, need to be socialized especially to the young generation and to Dayak young generation especially in order, not to extinction.

  • A Growing Concern: The Borneo Project

    58:00

This episode features an interview with two members of the Borneo Project, an organization dedicated to protecting the people, culture and ecosystems of Borneo, the third largest island in the world.

Program also includes an excellent 10 video and numerous photographs of the people and their culture.

John Paisley and Joe Lamb both work intimately with the people of Borneo, who have seen their ancestral lands and waterways decimated by logging.
In just a few decades the majority of the southern part of the island has been denuded, and the northern half is disappearing rapidly.
Also, In addition to the 3 existing dams, 12 more dams are being planned which would further impoverish the people.

There is an insidious movement to move all indigenous people from their lands, worldwide. They are our last collective connection to the earth, to nature, and really, ultimately, to ourselves.

We can no more lose our indigenous people the we can surrender all of our wild spaces, which is happening rapidly on a planetary scale.
Our natural resources, actually the SOURCE of our existence on this planet, are being commodified and, for the most part, trashed.

Since we are all complicit, to some degree……..we are all capable, to some degree, of reshaping the current paradigm.

Ask anyone to name a magician and they will inevitably come up with Houdini. Indeed, Harry Houdini is one of the most famous entertainers of all time, but his contributions were not limited to the stage.

He was a staunch supporter of critical thinking and a fierce opponent of charlatans. One of his most famous talks to students about differentiating fact from fancy was delivered at McGill University in 1926 – and, in a curious way, this led to his demise.

To find out more about Houdini’s surprising McGill connection, tune into this webinar with Dr. Joe Schwarcz on the life of this performer extraordinaire and his lesser known career as a nonsense debunker.

    SUMMARY
    =======
The Sultanate of Sulu (Tausūg: Kasultanan sin Sūg, Jawi: کسلطانن سولو دار الإسلام, Malay: Kesultanan Sulu, Arabic: سلطنة سولك‎) was a Muslim state that ruled the islands in the Sulu Archipelago, parts of Mindanao, certain portions of Palawan and north-eastern Borneo (present-day the certain parts of Sabah and North Kalimantan).
The sultanate was founded on 17 November 1405. by a Johore-born explorer and religious scholar Sharif ul-Hashim. Paduka Mahasari Maulana al Sultan Sharif ul-Hashim became his full regnal name, Sharif-ul Hashim is his abbreviated name. He settled in Buansa, Sulu. After the marriage of Abu Bakr and a local dayang-dayang (princess) Paramisuli, he founded the sultanate. The Sultanate gained its independence from the Bruneian Empire in 1578.At its peak, it stretched over the islands that bordered the western peninsula of Mindanao in the east to Palawan in the north. It also covers the area in northeastern side of Borneo, stretching from Marudu Bay, to Tepian Durian (in present-day Kalimantan). While another source stated the area stretching from Kimanis Bay which also overlaps with the boundaries of the Bruneian Sultanate. Due to the arrival of western powers such as the Spanish, British, Dutch, French, German and American, the Sultan thalassocracy and sovereign political powers were relinquished by 1915 through an agreement that was signed with the last colonialist, the United States. In 1962, Philippine Government under the leadership of President Diosdado Macapagal officially recognised the continued existence of the Sultanate of Sulu. On 24 May 1974, Sultan Mohammed Mahakuttah Kiram (reigned 1974–1986), was the last officially recognized Sulu Sultan in the Philippines, having been recognized by President Ferdinand Marcos. On 15 August 1974 Sultan Moh. Mahakuttah A. Kiram submitted the organisational structure of the Sultanate of Sulu to the President of Philippines. The above named structure confirmed that Muedzul Lail Tan Kiram was the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Sulu. Under Rodrigo Duterte's administration, calls to finally settle the dispute of who is the officially recognized Sultan of Sulu via government recognition through an Executive Order was voiced out by various parties involved with the issue. The calls have yet to be dealt with by the government since 2017, along with a 2016 electoral promise to retake Eastern Sabah. In 2016, for the first time in history, the five contesting sultans of Sulu, Sultan Ibrahim Bahjin, Sultan Muizuddin Jainal Bahjin, Sultan Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram, Sultan Mohammad Venizar Julkarnain Jainal Abirin, and Sultan Phugdalun Kiram signed a covenant in an unprecedented move aimed at consolidating and strengthening the sultanate's unity. The ceremony was held in Zamboanga City and was attended by hundreds of supporters and members of the different Royal Houses of the Sultanate of Sulu, and religious leaders and representatives of various sectors, including those from mainland Mindanao. In May 9, 2018, all five sultans of the sultanate and their supporters converged again in Zamboanga City in support of the establishment of the Zambasulta Federal State through a federal form of Philippine government. The event was officially declared as the Bangsa Sug Consensus.

The Last Male Sumatran Rhino Extinct in Malaysia | WGWCT

Malaysia's last male sumatran rhino dies...

Malaysia's last male Sumatran rhino has died, leaving behind just one female of the same rare species in captivity in the country.

The Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA) confirmed the animal's death in a statement on Facebook on Monday, saying: It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news that Tam, Malaysia's last male Sumatran rhino, has passed away.

Tam had been suffering from organ failure before his death, BORA said.

Sumatran rhinos are the world's smallest rhinoceros species, standing at around 4 feet 3 inches high, when fully grown. They are the only Asian rhinos with two horns, and are covered in hair.

The animals are found in Indonesia, Malaysia's Sabah state (part of the island of Borneo) and peninsular Malaysia; some are also thought to live in southern Thailand, according to the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF).

It is unclear precisely how many Sumatran rhinos remain, but experts at the International Rhino Foundation believe there are fewer than 80 still in the wild.

BORA describes the rhinos as functionally extinct, meaning that the few animals remaining are insufficient to save the species from dying out.
Tam's death means there is only one Sumatran rhino, a female called Iman, left in Malaysia.

The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) considers the creatures to be critically endangered as a result of poaching and habitat fragmentation.

Tam was captured and brought to live in Sabah's Tabin Wildlife Reserve. It was hoped he would breed with captive female rhinos, but these hopes were dashed when it was discovered that the two female rhinos at the reserve were infertile.

I remember so well when Tam was captured and the high hopes everyone had that he could be the founding member of a successful captive breeding program in Sabah, and join the then-international efforts involving the US and Indonesia, Susie Ellis, executive director of the International Rhino Foundation, said in a statement. Sadly, those hopes were repeatedly dashed over the next decade by a series of incidents, some sociopolitical, some biological, and some simply bad luck.

Efforts to save the species in Malaysia have since focused on reproductive technology, including in vitro fertilization, but have so far proved unsuccessful.

Rhinos are under threat across the globe. The western black rhino, native to western Africa, was declared extinct in 2013. The last male northern white rhino died last year, bringing the species to the brink of extinction.
