  • Building A Medieval Castle Using Authentic Tools | Secrets Of The Castle | Timeline

    58:51

Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Peter Ginn and Tom Pinfold turn the clock back as they learn how to build a medieval castle using the tools, techniques and materials available in the 13th century.

Although Britain has some of the finest remaining castles of the medieval period, many of their secrets have been lost to time.

Peter and Tom set to work straight away, learning the skills of the medieval stonemasons to construct a beautiful spiral staircase. After digging stone out of the quarry, they take it to the tracing floor, where every stone is marked out using the most closely guarded knowledge of the medieval castle builders: geometry. Then each step is hand-carved, a three-day task, before being winched into place using the treadmill-powered crane.

  • The Castle Builders: Masters & Masons - How Medieval Castles Were Built | Free Documentary History

    48:28

The Castle Builders - Episode 1: Masters & Masons - How Medieval Castles Were Built | History Documentary

Watch 'Castle Builders - Episode 2' here:

Castles – citadels of world heritage. All over Europe, millions flock to see these masterpieces in stone.
They are drawn by the astonishing scale of construction – and by a sense of a lost world of heroism and chivalry. But castles are more than magnificent monuments to a past that’s dead and gone. They hold the key to understanding a crucial period in the growth of our civilisation.

In this first episode, we’ll see how some of the great castles of Europe were built, and how the ideas and techniques behind their construction changed and developed in a few short centuries. Kings and barons found the resources and manpower to start building castles, and spent fortunes on finishing them – and all of this happened at on a huge scale, at a frenetic pace, and often in the heart of hostile territory.

We’ll meet the Castle Builders – the labourers and masons who did the hard work; the geniuses of design who imagined them, the structural engineers who turned them into reality; and the kings and barons who commissioned them and lived in them.

We’ll travel from Richard the Lionheart’s astonishing Chateau Gauillard in Normandy to the ‘layered’ defences of Caerphilly – the first castle in Britain built to be defended by walls within walls – and around Edward I’s massive ‘ring of iron’ that gripped North Wales.

Large-scale dramatic reconstructions and state-of-the-art computer graphics will give us a thrilling sense of how all of these mediaeval mega-structures were designed and built.

  • How to Build the Perfect Castle

    17:32

This is Epic History TV's guide to building the perfect castle, based on the development of European medieval castles over 400 years of history. We trace the origins of the castle in the feudal system that emerged in France c.900 CE, and look at the early motte-and-bailey castle, used by the Normans to subjugate England and Wales in the 11th century. We then look at how castle's became stronger and more sophisticated, with the addition of stone curtain walls, massive keeps, towers (square, round and D-shaped), as well as powerful gatehouses, barbicans, machicolations and moats.

    48:14

The Castle Builders - Episode 3: Dreams & Decorations - The Great Medieval Castles of Europe as Homes and Palaces | History Documentary

Watch 'Castle Builders - Episode 1' here:

In this series, we’ve seen the castle develop across the centuries. In this final episode, we trace a major change in the primary purpose of a castle – from fort to palace. Castle builders become decorators and dreamers, cementing the place of their creations in the imaginations of everyone. The castle becomes a place of luxury, fantasy and ceremonial.

It’s a tale that will to take us to the astonishing châteaux of the Loire and to a castle in Germany which has been in the hands of the same family for thirty-three generations. It will also lead us into an industrial age where the castle surprisingly gets a new lease of life. We’ll see why the castle’s appeal has always rested on its dual purpose – as a fortress and a residence.

We’ll visit Windsor on the outskirts of London which features two contrasting faces of the castle in our modern world. Windsor Castle is a tourist destination of global significance, one of the principal homes of British royalty. Its status as a symbol glorifying the English monarchy dates back hundreds of years – to the reign of Edward III in the fourteenth-century. Within sight of the real Windsor Castle, the Legoland resort trades on the excitement that the castle represents for the modern family. It has a castle-themed roller-coaster and its medieval citadel built in plastic bricks takes pride of place as a global icon alongside world cities like London, Amsterdam and Paris.

More than any other historical structure, the castle retains a grip on our imaginations – as a reminder of the brutality of medieval times and as a symbol of a Golden Age. For children of all ages, the work of the Castle Builders still fascinates.

  • Castles for Kids: What is a Castle? Medieval History for Children - FreeSchool

    7:25

For hundreds of years, if you wanted to control territory in Europe, a castle was your best friend. A combination of a military fortification and the home of an important person like a king, castles served many different purposes. The earliest castles began appearing in the 9th or 10th century, but by the late 1500s they fell out of use.

  • The Hidden Secrets Built Into Medieval Castles That Most People Never Knew Existed

    5:27

When you look at a medieval castle, several different images probably pop into your head. It could be of a princess longingly gazing out of a window or perhaps a knight jousting atop his noble white steed.

We all hold different associations with castles, that’s certainly true. But how much do we really know about their design and the purpose they served for those living behind their walls?

While medieval castles might seem arcane, they did serve a very specific function when they were built. They also hold dark secrets…

The first time you probably heard of a castle was when someone was reading fairy tales before bed. Perhaps you pictured them as the sparkling mansions where Cinderella and the other princesses found their happily ever-afters.

  • Building a Medieval House | 10 Day Bushcraft Shelter Build

    29:24

Building a medieval house in the woods, a 10 day bushcraft shelter. This is a full build video of the anglo saxon house with thatch roof that we built using simple hand tools. This medieval-era bushcraft camp was inspired by the anglo saxon pit house. The saxons occupied Britain from the 5th to the 11th century. Many of their houses were built by digging a pit in the ground which would not only help to keep a consistent temperature in their homes throughout the year, but it would also mean that they needed less building materials to build the house upwards. We used simple hand tools: axe, saw, knife, pick axe, hand auger and drawknife to build this tiny house in the forest. I built this with my Dad in 10 days. See below for individual episodes of the Saxon House series where we talk about what we are doing and why.

  • Reconstruction of a Medieval Castle at Guedelon

    4:46

Guédelon Castle is a medieval construction project located in Treigny, France. The object of the project is to build a castle using only the techniques and materials used in the Middle Ages. When completed in the 2020s, it should be an authentic recreation of a 13th-century medieval castle.

In order to fully investigate the technology required in the past, the project is using only period construction techniques, tools, and costumes. Materials, including wood and stone, are all obtained locally. Jacques Moulin is the chief architect for the project. He designed the castle according to the architectural model developed during the 12th and 13th centuries by Philip II of France.

Construction started in 1997 under Michel Guyot, owner of Saint-Fargeau castle 13km away. The site was chosen according to the availability of construction materials: an abandoned stone quarry, in a large forest, with a pond close by.

The project has created 55 jobs and is now a tourist destination, with more than 300 000 visits each year.
