1.5 million New Yorkers lack access to high-speed internet.

According to New York City’s research, 40% of households lack either home or mobile broadband connection. And over 1.5 million New Yorkers lack both. This digital divide throws up massive barriers to education, employment, health, banking, social networking, and government service options.

One non-profit is looking to challenge the top dogs by providing people with another option of where they get their internet. And they’re doing so by building an internet infrastructure that is cheaper and potentially more reliable.

According to NYC Mesh, their mesh internet approach provides numerous advantages. First and foremost: it’s low cost, a key concern for closing the digital divide. NYC Mesh’s service fees are donation based, with the organization suggesting $20-60 depending on what a member can afford. It’s free for those who cannot afford to donate.

  • Alone, Together: How Technology Separates Us | Henry Williams | TEDxTheMastersSchool

Henry Williams notes that we live in a world that is saturated with a web of connected devices. Although the internet purports to keep us in closer contact, he adds, technology is actually pulling us apart, putting up barriers in social circles that keep us in our own separate digital worlds. Henry’s talk will argue that fundamentally, our technology status quo is manipulating our psychology, fracturing our culture, and making us—young people especially—profoundly unhappy. Despite this crisis, he says, there are reasons for optimism: that technology is becoming more human, that the world of internet subcultures can nurture the lonely, and that we will someday be able to define healthy digital identities. If we are wise in our journey to the future, we can craft a world where we are brought together by our black mirrors more than we are torn apart. A 17-year-old senior from New York, Henry Williams is one of the editors-in-chief of Tower, the School newspaper; a co-president of the Model United Nations club, and is currently working on a senior thesis to analyze social patterns through machine learning. Henry will be attending Columbia University in the fall to study computer science, math and physics, and he hopes to help contribute to the field of artificial intelligence and social transformation through technology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

  • Why The Internet Needs The Navajo | Still Connecting

It's not just that the Navajo need the internet – the internet needs the Navajo.

  • MAN IS LIVING IN 2027 & HUMAN RACE IS GONE! Unicosobreviviente

(REAL UNEXPLAINABLE FOOTAGE) Man from Valencia Spain travels to the future and is trapped in 2027 with no signs of life. Is this the end of the world? Could this be an alternate world or dimension? Javier aka Unicosobrevivienta uploaded a video to TikTok claiming that he woke up in 2027 in a hospital and when he went outside everyone was gone. The entire human race disappeared and even every animal in the world is GONE. I know this sounds crazy but he has numerous videos showing him alone in a city with 2.5 million people. Where did all those people go? Supposedly there is a connection between 2027 and 2021 making it seem as he is trapped in a future or parallel alternate reality but still able to communicate back to 2021.

    More info that was promised-
What is likely happening is that the sharks can smell the blood but it's just not in a quantity that is interesting to them especially since they don't love human blood that much (btw, I spoke with a marine biologist and mammal blood is all the same from a chemical marker stand point so cow blood is a suitable substitute for human blood). If I did the experiment again, I would want to test human blood vs. fish blood.

Meet Peppa Pig and her family:
Peppa Pig is a lovable but slightly bossy little pig. She is four years old and lives with Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig and her little brother George. Peppa likes playing with her best friend Suzy Sheep, visiting Granny and Grandpa Pig and looking after George. Most of all, Peppa loves jumping up and down in muddy puddles, laughing and making loud snorting noises.
George Pig is Peppa’s little brother. He is 18 months old and loves to play with his big sister, Peppa – even when she’s being bossy. George’s favourite thing is his toy dinosaur. He carries it everywhere with him. George can’t speak yet but can say one word very well: ‘Dine-saw!’
Mummy Pig likes jumping up and down in muddy puddles almost as much as Peppa. She works from home on her computer and sometimes lets Peppa and George help, as long as they don’t bash the keyboard. She is better at map reading than Daddy Pig and is very wise about most things.
Daddy Pig is very jolly and laughs all the time, especially when he plays with Peppa and George. Daddy Pig reads the paper and gets excited about trips in the car. He loves cookies and pumpkin pie and Peppa teases him about his big round tummy. Daddy Pig can be a tiny bit grumpy sometimes when he can’t remember where he put his glasses.

Have fun with Peppa Pig and her friends: Suzy Sheep, Rebecca Rabbit, Danny Dog, Candy Cat, Pedro Pony, Zoe Zebra, Emily Elephant, Freddy Fox, Kylie Kangaroo, Wendy Wolf, Gabriella Goat, Gerald Giraffe, Molly Mole, Belinda Bear, Delphine Donkey, Peggi and Pandora Panda, Mandy Mouse, Simon Squirrel!

  • Ep. 9: Galen Wolfe-Pauly wants to build a more human-centric internet.

Many of us (including your hosts) spend huge amounts of time on the internet. It is responsible for launching whole new industries, new ways of connecting, and a steady progression of digital-first empires.

It may surprise you to learn that there are people who nevertheless think the internet is fundamentally broken and needs to be replaced altogether. One of these people is Galen Wolfe-Pauly, CEO of Tlon, a company working on Urbit. He grew up in the woods near Santa Cruz, drawing, painting, building software and digital tools. He eventually left the cypherpunks and hippies of California to study architecture at the Cooper Union in New York, which informs the design sensibilities he brings to code.

  • “I built a world that everybody could feel connected to.” | Artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen

Subscribe to our channel for more videos on art and culture:

“I built a world that everybody could feel connected to.”

Welcome to one of the most interesting artworks of 2021 – Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s Berl-Berl at the iconic Halle am Berghain in Berlin. “Every loop will always be different. Repetition and change. Like hypnosis. I want to get into people’s minds.”

For many years Jacob Kudsk Steensen has built virtual environments. This time he has re-created the wetlands around the city of Berlin. “I grew up in the digital age that felt very fractured. You have the internet; you have video games; you can connect with everybody everywhere. But during covid and the lockdown, I was retained to one location. So I rediscovered a kind of emotional reconnection to what is hyper-local. For the past two years, I have been exploring formations of nature that were right in front of me but that you rarely think about. I have chosen to look at the overlooked landscape. Suddenly you can show a tiny mushroom on a screen that is 14 m large. You create new perspectives on nature.”

“All my work is connected by an interest in landscapes and how we can use technology to experience them in new ways,” Steensen says, adding that he is particularly interested in the smaller ecosystems “in different parts of the world that are changing because of a general climate change.” In these places, specialized biologists research one specific thing, and Kudsk Steensen spends 3-6 months in a given landscape, talking to them, taking photographs, collecting soil, leaves etc. He then returns to his studio, where he creates digital creatures and locations based on his expedition: “I transform it a bit, and enable new ways of sensing and perceiving, for example, the leaf of a tree. So a leaf would be on a gigantic scale, and the veins are like two meters wide, and you can see everything pulsating, you can touch it and move around it.”

“There are a lot of natural histories that we have forgotten”, Jakob Kudsk Steensen goes on telling. “All of the different cultures in Europe are founded on wetlands and swamps. Berlin actually means swamp. But we have forgotten this history. We have ruined the thing we are originated from.”

Though the landscape lives digitally, Kudsk Steensen continuously adapts the piece to the architecture of the exhibition because it creates a new world: “It’s like a friction space between this cultivated museum space and the remote ecosystem that I had to go to… and then the exhibition itself is this fractured space or this middle existence that I think we all live in right now.” It is precisely this meeting point, this “middle existence”, which makes up our perception of reality, that Kudsk Steensen seeks to play with.

Thus, Berl-Berl is not only a virtual environment and a digital swamp. At the same time, it is an instrument and a song. “A living digital environment that is evolving all the time and is changing the building resulting in the building becoming one big instrument. A bit like a cathedral that tells a story about the heavens, about nature and the world where human voice can occupy the whole space.”

Jakob Kudsk Steensen (b. 1987) is a Danish artist and art director based in Berlin. He is working with environmental storytelling through 3d animation, sound and immersive installations.

Key collaborators include Musician ARCA, Composer and Musical Director for the Philip Glass Ensemble Michael Riesman, Ornithologist and author Dr Douglas H. Pratt, Architect Sir David Adjaye OBE RA, BTS, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Natural History Museum Berlin, among others.
Jakob has recently exhibited with his major solo exhibition “Berl-Berl” in Berlin at Halle am Berghain, commissioned by LAS, and at Luma Arles with “Liminal Lands” for the “Prelude” exhibition. He was a finalist for the Future Generation Art Prize at the 2019 Venice Biennale. He is the recipient of the best VR graphics for RE-ANIMATED (2019) at the Cinequest Festival for Technology and Cinema, among others. For more see:

  • Leap Into Live: Using Live Video to Connect with Students

During this crazy time, many teachers miss their students. They want to connect, but may not know how. In this session, Mike Yates will show educators how to use YouTube Live to connect with students. He'll also give you a rundown of how to do this WITHOUT filming boring classroom lectures!

Mike Yates is on a mission to transform the K-12 education experience. He has taught in public, private, and charter schools. Mike has also won teaching and coaching awards, but he still found himself unable to help kids the way they should be helped. He knew there had to be another way.

Today, Mike works tirelessly to disrupt and innovate school as a team leader at Alpha, an innovative, independent school that uses adaptive learning software in place of direct instruction. Every student at Alpha performs in the top 10% of students their age on the MAP assessment. 99% of our students report that they love coming to school. Every student learns life skills, technical skills and transferable skills. Alpha is changing the way kids do school. Mike co-founded Guide, a social e-learning app that teaches students life skills through micro-video content to provide access to innovative education options. Guide makes learning blended, on demand and relevant. It is changing the way students use education.

The Internet’s defining characteristics—its distributed architecture and its decentralized governance—offered the promise of improved access and greater freedom for everyone, but the Internet has not exactly delivered on it. Instead, the very structures and practices established to maintain the Internet widened the gap between the promise of a public good and the more complicated present-day reality.

The Ford Foundation’s Technology and Society program supported a new, field-setting research report by Niels ten Oever, a postdoctoral researcher, examining the background and impacts of the Internet’s multistakeholder governance. • Episode 8 w/ Ghada Zoubiane, PhD - AMR Fireside Chat

So it's my real privilege today to get to chat with Ghada Zoubiane who is someone I met five or six years ago when she was at Wellcome Trust and Ghada will tell you more about herself but the thing that I, has always inspired me about what she's done is her story over time how she took her PhD and basically fundamental cellular molecular biology and has turned it into an opportunity to influence AMR work around the world. Primarily based in Europe, but a strong international theme here so, Ghada, welcome and thank you for making time to visit with us today.

Thank you very much, John, thank you.

So just give me a quick recap about you once upon a time you got into this area by what, once upon a time you were born in Lebanon, I know that part, so go from there.

Yes I’m born and bred in Lebanon, spent over 25 years in Lebanon as an agriculture engineering in the first instance, Masters in animal science and really a passion in science which is very interesting when you are in Lebanon in the middle of a war, you have a lot of challenges, you have your the normal life as you conducted and really working in science and doing a Masters in science in Lebanon in the war was not really a walk in the park because we're talking about challenges in funding, what we could afford, what we couldn't, restriction on imports due to war. Regional, national level, and different players, (including your own country, John) and power cuts!
Concern about safety and explosion going here and there, so in a way conducting science becomes an existential problem. You know, you build your own infrastructure in a lab, you plug pipette at night, you autoclave when electricity is there,
but science and politics becomes really close.

Because anything in Lebanon is influenced by politics and I guess I was a bit privileged that my household was very much active politically so that was sort of like the norm, bread and butter for us. But nevertheless I think it was a very interesting start that tested how much I am passionate about wanting to do science and how, the length to which I’m gonna go to finish my Masters and work a little bit in Lebanon and then land on the shores of Manchester in the UK for my PhD.

  • Why Do Arteries Get Clogged? It’s Not What You Think

Heart disease is the number one killer in the world. To understand why this disease is so deadly, Patrick has some answers for you.

    » Visit our shop at

To start, the term cardiovascular disease actually includes a bunch of different diseases, and there are many factors that go into what causes each kind. And the structure we need to learn to understand these diseases isn’t necessarily the heart, but rather the arteries.

Arteries are complex, ever changing organs that deliver blood throughout the body and play a role not just in disease, but in experiencing different climates, exercising, and maintaining homeostasis.

When you take a big picture look at the entire cardiovascular system, you will see two distinct loops of blood vessel networks, shaped like a figure eight. One of the loops carries deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs, picks up some oxygen, and circles back to the heart.

This pulmonary circulation is where important gas exchange happens, allowing us to utilize all the carbon dioxide waste we’ve built up in our blood and capture that oxygen we breathe in.

Once our blood is nice and oxygenated it comes back to the left side of the heart to be pumped into systemic circulation, the second loop that hits everything that isn’t the lungs.

Right after getting ejected from the left side of the heart, blood then passes through the aorta, which is the biggest artery the human body has.

The aorta branches off into smaller arteries up into the neck and brain and down the body into the limbs and abdomen. As the arteries get closer to individual tissues and organs, they’ll branch off into tiny arterioles, and then into microscopic blood vessels called capillaries.

Some of those capillaries are so tiny that red blood cells have to line up cell by cell to get through.

But, no surprise, not all of our arteries are built the same.

Find out more about your different arteries, the purposes they serve, and how they all come up again and again when it comes to understanding cardiovascular disease in this episode of Human.
