  • BLANTON CURATED CONVERSATIONS - One Nation: Unraveling the Symbolism of Flags

    49:54

If you've enjoyed digital experiences like this and the Blanton's other #museumfromhome offerings, please consider a gift of any size to the Blanton Together Fund:

Flags are potent symbols designed to represent a nation’s identity. So what does it mean when a symbol of unity is not the same as a symbol of equality and justice for all? By incorporating flags into their work, artists raise urgent questions about national identity, and sometimes nationhood itself. Join Blanton curators Carter Foster, Vanessa Davidson, and Genevra Higginson as well as UT Austin doctoral candidate Phillip Townsend for a discussion of artworks that reinterpret, interrogate, and expand the narrative of national flags.

Correction: In her response to a participant question, Genevra Higginson omitted some of Barbara Jones-Hogu's exhibition history. She would like to acknowledge that, in 1967, Jones-Hogu had shows at 353 East Gallery and Lakeside Gallery, both in Chicago. Her works were first exhibited at the South Side Community Arts Center in Chicago two years later, in their group show Black Expressions '69. Further, AFRICOBRA's first exhibition, AFRICOBRA 1: Ten in Search of a Nation, opened in 1970 at the Studio Museum in Harlem, and then toured to the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (Roxbury, MA), Black Expo (Chicago), and Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL). Higginson encourages anyone interested in Jones-Hogu's work to refer to DePaul Art Museum's excellent catalogue Barbara Jones-Hogu: Resist Relate Unite (2018).

  • Reining in Online Abuses — Hany Farid

    1:3:58

Online platforms today are being used in deplorably diverse ways: recruiting and radicalizing terrorists, buying and selling illegal weapons and underage prostitutes, cyberbullying and cyberstalking, revenge porn, theft of personal and financial data, propagating fake and hateful news, and much more. Technology companies have been and continue to be frustratingly slow in responding to these real threats with real consequences. I advocate for the development and deployment of new technologies that allow for the free flow of ideas while reining in abuses. As a case study, I will describe one such technology — photoDNA — that is currently being used in the global fight against child exploitation. I will also describe the technological, legal, and policy obstacles that we faced prior to deployment and how lessons from this work can inform future efforts. I will also describe ongoing efforts in countering extremism online.

Hany Farid is the Albert Bradley 1915 Third Century Professor and Chair of Computer Science at Dartmouth. His research focuses on digital forensics, image analysis, and human perception. He received his undergraduate degree in computer science and applied mathematics from the University of Rochester in 1989 and his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. Following a two year post-doctoral fellowship in brain and cognitive sciences at MIT, he joined the faculty at Dartmouth in 1999. He is the recipient of a Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and is a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He is also the chief technology officer and co-founder of Fourandsix Technologies and a senior advisor to the Counter Extremism Project.

  • What you need to know about submitting a claim for the day school settlement | APTN InFocus

    47:25

After more than a decade of waiting after the residential school survivors were compensated for being forced into compensation, many Indian day school survivors can now apply for compensation.
But Ottawa has deemed only half – about 700 schools – are eligible.

The other half – some 680 schools, sanatoriums and other facilities – they said, weren’t entirely run or funded by the Government of Canada and are excluded from the settlement.

APTN InFocus sorted through what this all means.

The University of the Philippines in partnership with Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and the UP Manila NIH National Telehealth Center would like to invite you to join the Fight Against COVID-19!

The UP Webinar Series STOP COVID DEATHS: Clinical Management Updates is scheduled EVERY FRIDAY from 12nn to 2pm.

    Webinar #10:
    “COVID-19 and Children:
The Experience of Southern Philippines Medical Center, Davao”
    Ma. Delta S. Aguilar
    SPMC Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist
    June 26, 2020 (Friday) 12nn

How has the pandemic impacted on children? Children may be hidden victims of COVID-19 as lockdowns have made it difficult for mothers to bring their children for regular check-ups or vaccination. Food may be scarce leading to malnutrition. Globally, child abuse has been reported as an effect of being kept at home under stressful conditions. Children may develop anxiety and not know how to express their fears and concerns. Children may be afraid for the people who care for them, especially if their parents are health workers.

Children can also get COVID-19. How do we care for children who get the infection? What should doctors watch out for in children who are exposed to adults with COVID-19?
The literature states that most children who get COVID-19 have a mild or even asymptomatic illness, there are new reports that some children may have a multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) can lead to life-threatening problems with the heart and other organs in the body. Early reports compared it to Kawasaki disease, an inflammatory illness that can lead to heart problems and cause severe illness

On the other hand, the symptoms of COVID-19 can mimic other types of infections. How can we differentiate COVID-19 in children from other infectious diseases?
How about children with other types of diseases like cancer or rheumatoid arthritis who may be at risk for getting COVID-19? How can we protect them?

COVID-19 and children will focus on how to protect and care for children during the pandemic.
