This short video is dedicated to the Kalbelya Gypsies from Rajasthan who respond to poverty with dance, music, wit, courage, and dignity. Welcome to leave your comments.
The Kalbeliyas are a nomadic cast from the desert in Rajasthan, INDIA. They are known for their Music, Dance and Snake Charmer's talents. The traditional occupation of the KALBELIAS was to catch snakes and train them to dance to the sound of the PUNGI (a wind instrument) for which they are also called SAPERA. Today with the prohibition of hunting for snakes in India, this charismatic caste survive mostly as dancers, musicians, and singers. The dancers dressed in traditional black swirling skirts, and dance to the accompaniment of pungi, - the wooden instrument of the Snake Charmers. Some Kalbelyas still trade the medicinal snake's venom for income. Kalbelia women compose songs, they are known as the best dancers of the Thar desert.
There is a startling resemblance between the dance and music of Spain and those of the Kalbeliyas.

We traveled to Rajasthan specially to meet the Cobra Gypsies, also called the Kalbaliyas or Kalbaliya Gypsies. We found them in Pushkar, and they invited us to their village in the desert just outside the town. A wonderful musical interchange followed, which is documented in this video.

Southeast Asia at its best. 85% of the country is untouched nature, widespread forests, steep mountains and wide river valleys, but also cool high plateaus and savannahs. The primeval forests support a fauna like something out of a fairy tale, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and some of the rarest animal species on the planet. Species never seen by humans are discovered at regular intervals. In recent decades, the few large mammals to be described for the first time were all found in Indochina and experts assume that most of them are at home in Laos: wild oxen such as the saola and kuprey or the truong son munjak. No outsider has ever seen a living specimen of the latter; its existence is only known indirectly, through skeletons, horns and bag that are occasionally found in remote villages. And there is the Mekong, one of the last untamed rivers on Earth. Fed by hundreds of tributaries, it is one of the richest freshwater systems on the planet, comparable only with the Congo or Amazon. This is where the Mekong catfish lives. At 3 meters long and weighing in at 300 kilograms, this monster must be the largest freshwater fish on earth.

  • Welcome Nowhere

    1:20:06

Narrated by multi-Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke, “Welcome Nowhere” tells the true story of one community of Roma people (commonly known as Gypsies) living in Bulgaria. After being evicted from their homes, over 200 of them are forced to live in shantytowns without proper sanitation. Despite years of promises from the government for housing, their living conditions only get worse while members of the community struggle to survive with what little they have. Documenting their fight for new homes and featuring interviews with leading Roma Rights experts, “Welcome Nowhere” paints a detailed picture of one of Europe’s most controversial issues.

    1:20:33

At an altitude of 4500 meters, on the highest plateaus of Karnak in the Himalayan région of Ladakh, in a lunar setting where the sky blends with the mineral immensity, director Marianne Chaud filmed the movements of these last nomads. Immersed for months in their community, speaking their language, she placed her camera as close as possible to their voices and gestures, offering viewers encounters of a rare intimacy. As much as the splendor of the landscapes, the extreme harshness of the living conditions or the emotion shared with these nomads, it is this closeness that creates the magic of the film.

    Direction: Marianne Chaud
Production: ZED (Manuel Catteau) for ARTE France

With thanks to Ladakh, to all the nomadic people of Karnak,

  • A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BANJARA - LAMBANI GYPSY : CELEBRATING HOLI

    23:34

The camera follows one day in the life of a Banjara/Lambani tribal woman family. A group of her friends comes together to celebrate the Indian Festival of Holi. Every year during Holy, they go out in the countryside visiting family, friends, and meeting strangers to throw colors on each other, and share food and drinks. The camera registers how the Banjara women, are holding steadfast to their ancient culture, their way of dressing which is perhaps the most colorful and elaborated of any tribal group in India. Undoubtedly, their dress and jewelry set them apart from all other groups. Their full-length skirt, with borders embroidered in colorful threads. The mantle which covers the head is long enough to drape down their backs almost touching the feet. Their embroidered clothes are studded with little mirrors and coins which embellish their cholis (blouses). A variety of materials in silver, brass, ivory, animal bones, and even plastic are used in the making of a Banjara (Lamani) wardrobe. The women also wear pretty silver anklets which clink as they walk barefoot. Heavy jewelry and long silver earrings patterned cowries decorate their faces.

This portrait of a day in the life of a Lamani village in Hampi in the state of Karnataka, India is a reflection on the experience of life among a tribal community that continues to resist acculturation. The Banjaras also are known as Lamani people in central/South India, originally from Rajasthan and Gujarat, in ancient times they were nomads. Centuries ago they worked for the Moghuls invaders as the carriers transporting goods like salt, grains and arms, setting up their camps on the outskirts of army encampments all over India. When the campaigns ended, many Banjaras/ Lamani moved from their desert home-based in Rajasthan and settled down in the Deccan.

Geographically the Deccan extends over eight Indian states, covering most of central and southern India. Well built and strong the Banjaras/ Lamani found service in places like the state of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Today due to the spread of communications and means of transportation, the Banjara/Lamani lifestyle has naturally altered and the tribals have had to abandon their packs of animals and take to working as laborers in rural areas, working on building and construction projects, and settling in rural villages of their own called Tandra.

Despite all this, their traditional customs, manners, and ceremonies have undergone little change. They move wherever work is available, set up their temporary hamlets, and build simple homes of mud and bamboo plants. They keep very few domestic possessions and make do with earthen vessels, small quilts, bamboo and date mats, and some rickety wooden articles. Brass and copper vessels are only recent additions and even these are very few in each family because their resources are limited.

Fond of festivals and domestic celebrations, the Banjaras/ Lamani revel on occasions, especially during the festival of Holi and Dassara when the event is a community affair. Very independent, the women get together and go from house to house in other villages collecting donations singing, and dancing all the way. Family deities are worshipped on such occasions. Banjaras share some of the religious beliefs of the Hindus. Song and dance come naturally to these tribal women. Dances and songs also form an integral part of the Banjara/ Lamani celebration during the festival of Holi. As a tradition liquor is distributed freely to the women when they visit the houses of the Indians on Holi.
The welcome is accompanied by offering paan-supari (betel leaves and nut) according to the custom in Hampi, Karnataka.

Documentary cinema is a mind-broadening medium that is at the forefront of the process of helping the evolution of humanity's consciousness. It does it by its intention to examine and to pay close attention to the minute details of the human condition in documentaries like this one. This work in progress shows a deep involvement in exploring how individual people and isolated communities cope with their circumstances in today's world.

Every day you live, eat, breathe, procreate, defecate and socialize entirely in a small boat or small ocean stilted hut – 24/7, 365 days a year. This is the life of the famous ‘Sea Gypsies’ (Sea Bajau). They belong to no country; their allegiance to the sea. It is said they originate from the Philippians but have calling the waters of Borneo home for over 200 years. Beautiful yet dangerous, the ocean waters surrounding this area are highly contentious, a haven for pirates and pillagers. In April 2000, pirates kidnapped 21 persons, dive instructors and guests, from Sipadan Island itself. Today military bases dot every coastline, patrolling the waters to secure a fragile peace.

Poverty-stricken, the Bajau have large families. The more workers the better when the game is daily survival. 12+ people share one room stick huts that poke from the ocean floor like spindly legs on rickety tip-toe. Les will learn how to make shelter of braided palm leaves and machete shorn wood, find fresh water, catch sea cucumber learning the dangerous art of compression diving, and examine life in an area of the world where starfish aren’t your friends, sea urchins rule the ocean floor, and jelly fish leave more than a sting.

With award winning, never before seen ceremonial and survival footage, Les Stroud crafted this stunningly beautiful and compelling series about connecting to the earth through survival and ancient ceremonies with indigenous cultures around the planet.

Raw footage of Kalbelia dance performed by the women of a Kalbelia community in Rajasthan, India. Kalbelia women compose songs and are known as the best dancers of the That desert. The traditional occupation of this nomadic caste was catching snakes, trading snake venom for healing and to train the snakes to dance to the sound of the pungi for which they are called sapera (snake sharmer). Today with the proihibition of hunting for snakes in India (Wildlife Protections Laws), this charismatic caste is mainly comprised by dancers, musicians and singers. Dancers are attired in traditional black swirling skirts and dance to the accompaniment of pungi - the wooden instrument of the snake charmers.

    WORLD CURIOSITIES |

In Indonesia is located the sulawesi island were live the Bajau, also known as sulawesi ghosts
They live in small boats called leppas. They're born on them, they grow up on them, they marry and have children on them, and they die on them. Their relationship to the sea is so close that they're unhappy to step on land, where they really do feel like fish out of water. If they leave the leppa, it's only to visit the underwater depths. They can dive to a depth of up to 50 feet and stay under water for a full five minutes.

We still don't know how the Bajau came to live here or how they came to this way of life. Some anthropologists say that they fled from inter-tribal violence in Malaysia, but they believe otherwise.

They rarely venture far from shore, though. They stay close by, fishing in the coral reefs.
In the evening the Bajau bring their boats close to the mangrove swamp for protection.
They meet all their needs on these houseboats made of api wood, but there is so little room to move that older people's legs actually atrophy.
Even so, up to five people can live on the boats, which have bedrooms, pantries, kitchens and living rooms.

  • Bitter chocolate | DW Documentary

    42:26

Chocolate may be a sweet treat, but its production leaves a bitter taste. Rainforests are cleared so slaves and children laborers can harvest cocoa beans on illegal plantations. Cocoa is produced under the most dubious conditions.

In Ivory Coast, the dark side of cocoa and chocolate production is hard to miss. Many people – including children – are driven here from neighboring Burkina Faso by drought and famine to find work. They often come alone, without their families, to find jobs on one of the many cocoa plantations. The conditions are spartan. They work with sharp machetes, carry heavy loads, are exposed to toxic herbicides, and lack protective clothing.

Major international cocoa companies and giants of the chocolate industry such as Nestlé, Cargill and Ferrero looked on as 90 percent of the Ivory Coast's primeval forests were destroyed. In 2001, the companies agreed to stop child labor, wage dumping and the further clearance of rainforests for five years. But 20 years later, the commitment has yet to be implemented. This moving documentary shows the dark side of the chocolate industry and its sweet, luxury product.

    The Inner Tracker
    Directed by Adjul Gardner

In 2002, a group of trackers was called together by three of the top animal tracking instructors in the United States.

Many of these trackers are familiar with interacting out in the field. Going out to look, and look, and look – dropping assumptions as quickly as possible – until they can discern a track without bias.

They strive to flourish this curiosity in all of their interactions with the natural world.

It’s one thing for trackers to trade thoughts on animal track and sign out in the woods. It’s another matter when those tracks are within themselves and their relationships with one another — that’s the story told in The Inner Tracker.

  • Gypsies: Wanderers No More - ROBERT SEPEHR

    31:10

If Romania got its name from Rome, then where did Rome get its name from? Where did it get its deities from.. for example: Mithras? Transylvania is a region in central Romania known for mysterious castles, like the Gothic fortress associated with the legend of Dracula, that translates to dragon, and in modern times has become interpreted to mean devil. The Romani, or Roma, are a traditionally nomadic ethnic group, living mostly in Europe and the Americas and originating from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. Gypsies speak a language (Romany) that is related to Hindi and are believed to have originated in South Asia.

Robert Sepehr is an author, producer and anthropologist specializing in linguistics, archeology, and paleobiology (archeogenetics).

  • Kraken Project, The first finding | Nature - Planet Doc Full Documentaries

    11:35

The first images showed a black, empty world as the camera descended. But, after long minutes, the lights began to be reflected. The descent was coming to an end. It was an emotional moment. We were discovering a new world and these were the first images.
That same night, we would receive surprising confirmation that our camera was indeed in the right place. A trawler brought on board a giant squid caught at barely 300 metres from the outer limit of our first buoy. This squid, 6 m in length, would represent quite a find, as it turned out to be a male, much less frequent and smaller than the females.

The Kraken Project. In search of the Giant Squid documentary narrates the campaign launched by a group of Spanish in search of the legendary Kraken, in northern Spain, in the depths of the Carrandi pit.
