This short video is dedicated to the Kalbelya Gypsies from Rajasthan who respond to poverty with dance, music, wit, courage, and dignity. Welcome to leave your comments.
The Kalbeliyas are a nomadic cast from the desert in Rajasthan, INDIA. They are known for their Music, Dance and Snake Charmer's talents. The traditional occupation of the KALBELIAS was to catch snakes and train them to dance to the sound of the PUNGI (a wind instrument) for which they are also called SAPERA. Today with the prohibition of hunting for snakes in India, this charismatic caste survive mostly as dancers, musicians, and singers. The dancers dressed in traditional black swirling skirts, and dance to the accompaniment of pungi, - the wooden instrument of the Snake Charmers. Some Kalbelyas still trade the medicinal snake's venom for income. Kalbelia women compose songs, they are known as the best dancers of the Thar desert.
There is a startling resemblance between the dance and music of Spain and those of the Kalbeliyas.

Video footage by Erika Hoprich, edited by Markus Koehorst (Markus K)
We traveled to Rajasthan specially to meet the Cobra Gypsies, also called the Kalbaliyas or Kalbaliya Gypsies. We found them in Pushkar, and they invited us to their village in the desert just outside the town. A wonderful musical interchange followed, which is documented in this video.
The songs you can hear are:
    - Fallen Angel, from my album 'The Patreon Files':
    - Hipshake, also from the same album

Southeast Asia at its best. 85% of the country is untouched nature, widespread forests, steep mountains and wide river valleys, but also cool high plateaus and savannahs. The primeval forests support a fauna like something out of a fairy tale, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and some of the rarest animal species on the planet. Species never seen by humans are discovered at regular intervals. In recent decades, the few large mammals to be described for the first time were all found in Indochina and experts assume that most of them are at home in Laos: wild oxen such as the saola and kuprey or the truong son munjak. No outsider has ever seen a living specimen of the latter; its existence is only known indirectly, through skeletons, horns and bag that are occasionally found in remote villages. And there is the Mekong, one of the last untamed rivers on Earth. Fed by hundreds of tributaries, it is one of the richest freshwater systems on the planet, comparable only with the Congo or Amazon. This is where the Mekong catfish lives. At 3 meters long and weighing in at 300 kilograms, this monster must be the largest freshwater fish on earth.

  • Transylvanias Gábor – between tradition and modernity | DW Documentary

    42:27

For 500 years, Transylvania’s Gábor people have held onto their values and rituals. This film explores the insular world of the Gábor Roma, and asks whether they can maintain their traditional lives in a globalized world.

The Romanian village of Karácsonyfalva is the center of the Gábor Roma community. More than 1,000 Gábor live there. The men wear large black hats, the women long skirts. The men travel all over Europe as traders, while the women raise the children. Most Gábor belong to the Adventist denomination. Many only learned to read in order to study the Bible. Abstaining from pork and above all from alcohol and tobacco makes them targets of curiosity. Considered aristocratic among the Roma people, the Gábor have their own laws in all areas of life. Problems are solved within the community; in cases of conflict, even the police turn to the community leaders. Their biggest and most important celebration is the wedding, the foundation of their society. Gábor marry exclusively among themselves. For this reason, girls are removed from school at age 11 and married at 14. Boys move from organized education to the school of life at 14. This documentary follows the marriage of 14-year-old Mundra to 16-year-old Bobbi, while giving a portrait of their families and the wider community. For the first time, they share an insight into their exciting, colorful, contradictory and insular world, in which wealth and poverty collide. This is a tight-knit community, one caught between tradition and the pressures of modernity.

JAISALMER AYO:GATEWAY OF THE GYPSIES full documentary is available NOW ON DEMAND|

A dramatic and musical look at the impact of globalization on several nomadic castes of Gypsies in Rajasthan, India. DVD available on Amazon.
Synopsis: Shot in remote areas of Rajasthan's Thar desert, in Northwest India, Jaisalmer Ayo! Gateway of the Gypsies captures the lives and journeys of nomadic communities who are believed to share common lineage with the Gypsies, also known as the Roma people.

Despite years of promises from the government for housing, their living conditions only get worse while members of the community struggle to survive with what little they have. Cobra Gypsies offers a contemporary and colorful window to the amazing ancient culture of the nomadic Kalbeliya tribes, living in rural Rajasthan, Northern India

  • A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BANJARA - LAMBANI GYPSY : CELEBRATING HOLI

    23:34

The camera follows one day in the life of a Banjara/Lambani tribal woman family. A group of her friends comes together to celebrate the Indian Festival of Holi. Every year during Holy, they go out in the countryside visiting family, friends, and meeting strangers to throw colors on each other, and share food and drinks. The camera registers how the Banjara women, are holding steadfast to their ancient culture, their way of dressing which is perhaps the most colorful and elaborated of any tribal group in India. Undoubtedly, their dress and jewelry set them apart from all other groups. Their full-length skirt, with borders embroidered in colorful threads. The mantle which covers the head is long enough to drape down their backs almost touching the feet. Their embroidered clothes are studded with little mirrors and coins which embellish their cholis (blouses). A variety of materials in silver, brass, ivory, animal bones, and even plastic are used in the making of a Banjara (Lamani) wardrobe. The women also wear pretty silver anklets which clink as they walk barefoot. Heavy jewelry and long silver earrings patterned cowries decorate their faces.

This portrait of a day in the life of a Lamani village in Hampi in the state of Karnataka, India is a reflection on the experience of life among a tribal community that continues to resist acculturation. The Banjaras also are known as Lamani people in central/South India, originally from Rajasthan and Gujarat, in ancient times they were nomads. Centuries ago they worked for the Moghuls invaders as the carriers transporting goods like salt, grains and arms, setting up their camps on the outskirts of army encampments all over India. When the campaigns ended, many Banjaras/ Lamani moved from their desert home-based in Rajasthan and settled down in the Deccan.

Geographically the Deccan extends over eight Indian states, covering most of central and southern India. Well built and strong the Banjaras/ Lamani found service in places like the state of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Today due to the spread of communications and means of transportation, the Banjara/Lamani lifestyle has naturally altered and the tribals have had to abandon their packs of animals and take to working as laborers in rural areas, working on building and construction projects, and settling in rural villages of their own called Tandra.

Despite all this, their traditional customs, manners, and ceremonies have undergone little change. They move wherever work is available, set up their temporary hamlets, and build simple homes of mud and bamboo plants. They keep very few domestic possessions and make do with earthen vessels, small quilts, bamboo and date mats, and some rickety wooden articles. Brass and copper vessels are only recent additions and even these are very few in each family because their resources are limited.

Fond of festivals and domestic celebrations, the Banjaras/ Lamani revel on occasions, especially during the festival of Holi and Dassara when the event is a community affair. Very independent, the women get together and go from house to house in other villages collecting donations singing, and dancing all the way. Family deities are worshipped on such occasions. Banjaras share some of the religious beliefs of the Hindus. Song and dance come naturally to these tribal women. Dances and songs also form an integral part of the Banjara/ Lamani celebration during the festival of Holi. As a tradition liquor is distributed freely to the women when they visit the houses of the Indians on Holi.
The welcome is accompanied by offering paan-supari (betel leaves and nut) according to the custom in Hampi, Karnataka.

Documentary cinema is a mind-broadening medium that is at the forefront of the process of helping the evolution of humanity's consciousness. It does it by its intention to examine and to pay close attention to the minute details of the human condition in documentaries like this one. This work in progress shows a deep involvement in exploring how individual people and isolated communities cope with their circumstances in today's world.

The Romani, also known as Roma, are an Indo-Aryan people, traditionally nomadic itinerants living mostly in Europe, as well as diaspora populations in the Americas. The Romani are widely known in English by the exonym Gypsies (or Gipsies), which is considered by some Roma people to be pejorative due to its connotations of illegality and irregularity.

Linguistic and genetic evidence suggests that the Romani as a people originated from the northern Indian subcontinent. They are dispersed, but their most concentrated populations are located in Europe, especially Central, Eastern and Southern Europe (including Turkey, Spain and Southern France). The Romani arrived in Mid-West Asia and Europe around 1007.

Since the 19th century, some Romani have also migrated to the Americas. There are an estimated one million Roma in the United States; and 800,000 in Brazil, most of whose ancestors emigrated in the 19th century from Eastern Europe. Brazil also includes a notable Romani community descended from people deported by the Portuguese Empire during the Portuguese Inquisition. In migrations since the late 19th century, Romani have also moved to other countries in South America and to Canada.

  • THE KALBELIA - Gypsies of Rajasthan, India

    1:21

The KALBELIA are Gypsies from Rajasthan, India.
    #gypsy #india #rajasthan
    Dear Friends,
Last November, I went to Rajasthan to document the Pushkar Camel Fair and to cover a travel Story of Rajasthan for a travel magazine.
One other goal during this trip was to establish contacts with a particular group of Gypsies “ The Kalbelia “ – since I was planning to do a documentary about them.

Two months ago, I was supposed to travel there again for my documentary about The Kalbelia Gypsy and join two other major Gypsy events but due to the delivery process has caused a delay that I was not able to do so. Hopefully, in the future next time.

I met some families, particularly Veeram and Santosh with their 6 kids. She was the first member of the family that I’ve met. She approached me to have a chat and we spend some time together. She applied henna on both my hands and brought me to her camp that she and her husband were living and introduced me to her family members. It was then I met her husband Veeram.

Veeram is an interesting individual. He speaks basic English but is very resourceful. My wish to document the Kalbelia Gypsy came from various short videos I saw – In one of the videos, he was one of the main characters like the intermediary.

During the current lockdown, these families are struggling to buy food and are going through a difficult period. They have very limited income to support their families. Most of them are doing small jobs, playing music, and dancing for people.

Before the lockdown, I was planning to request people around me to kindly donate if they have any old or unused clothing, bedsheet covers, make-up, shoes, etc so that I can arrange to pass to them in my next travel. Looking at the current situation, it would not be possible for me to do so.

Here are some images I have taken while I was there – these are random shots:

  • Gypsies of Bangladesh

    31:49

A documentary on the challenges of living a life as Gypsies in Bangladesh by SEHD

  • The Nomadic Night | SLICE | Full documentary

    1:20:33

At an altitude of 4500 meters, on the highest plateaus of Karnak in the Himalayan région of Ladakh, in a lunar setting where the sky blends with the mineral immensity, director Marianne Chaud filmed the movements of these last nomads. Immersed for months in their community, speaking their language, she placed her camera as close as possible to their voices and gestures, offering viewers encounters of a rare intimacy. As much as the splendor of the landscapes, the extreme harshness of the living conditions or the emotion shared with these nomads, it is this closeness that creates the magic of the film.

    Documentary The Nomadic Night
    Direction: Marianne Chaud
Production: ZED (Manuel Catteau) for ARTE France

With thanks to Ladakh, to all the nomadic people of Karnak,
To Dechen and his family, Phuntsog Tashi and Padma Dorje.

  • World’s Most Dangerous Roads | Bangladesh - The Nawabpur Road in Dhaka | Free Documentary

    43:18

World’s Most Dangerous Roads | Bangladesh - The Nawabpur Road in Dhaka (2010)

    World’s Most Dangerous Roads | India - Leh-Manali Highway:

In Bangladesh, the land with the highest density of population in the world (and the highest amount of corruption), the daily struggle to survive is fought everywhere, including the streets. Nowhere do people drive as brutally and recklessly as here. In Bangladesh you drive on the road like others drive with a bumper car: if you need space, you simply ram the car driving next to you. The police only came if there are fatalities. The biggest bottleneck in the transport system is the historical old town of Dhaka. Old Dhaka is a universe of its own, a world of bazaars in which every trade has its own quarter: there are streets of jewelers, sweets makers and fashionable tailors, and the vegetable wholesalers have their warehouses down at the port. The deliveries take place mostly on the river, the Buriganga River, a stinking cesspool. But the sold goods usually leave by land, and the customers also come by the land route – the Nawabpur Road. They generally come in buses or by rickshaw, where too many people are crammed into too little space. The traffic in Dhaka is everyday, normal madness. The film accompanies a rickshaw, a bus and a truck on their dangerous way through the streets of Dhaka and shows how it is possible to survive in what seems to be an incontrollable chaos.

  • The Heirs of Genghis Khan - Now in High Quality!

    52:52

The fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent dismantling of the Soviet block in 1989, made that the already battered economy of Mongolia suffered a collapse from which it still has not recovered. But within this country still live the nomads, retaining a lifestyle that keeps them on the sidelines of the political situation, with traditions that recall a past linked with the largest empire on earth: the empire that Genghis Khan forged. In the vast steppes of Siberia, where winter lasts ten months, we meet three unique races that will show us their wandering life and their survival techniques in this inhospitable environment.
