Welcome to 2018 ! The CSL Assiniboine is the 1st ship for me to catch this year. The Monson was the 1st arrival, I decided to sleep a little longer. The Canal has a thin veneer of ice, which the Assiniboine cuts right through, also a great salute for the fans on the piers from the ship !

  • CSL Assiniboine - Arrives in Two Harbors For Iron Ore

    11:13

Following the departure of the Lee A. Tregurtha, the CSL Assiniboine arrived in Two Harbors, Minnesota on the morning of May 31, 2019 for a load of iron ore. (A few other Canadian friends also entered the harbor that morning.)

This is my first time seeing the CSL Assiniboine. She is 739 feet long and was launched in 1977. She is operated by the Canada Steamship Lines... though CSL technically doesn't operate any steamships any longer.

A ship entry into Two Harbors doesn't happen very quickly. I edited down the process somewhat, but wanted to let the footage run at real speed (instead of fast-forwarding).

    2:13

This is a Lakes Pilot hopping off the Huron Belle Pilot boat after we've pulled alongside the CSL Assiniboine on the Detroit River just above the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit, MI

He walks along the side of the Pilot boat, holding onto the railing and then after the gangway from the ship is lowered into position, he steps up and pulls himself up to then begin walking up the gangway to the deck where he is greeted by the crew.

We then see one of the crew from the Pilot boat tieing up the Pilot's bag to send it aboard and I pan around to show you the area and how close we are to the ship before ending the video

  • A Duluth sunrise arrival for the CSL Assiniboine 083119

    3:36

Duluth does usually have nice sunrises, sunsets not so much...The Pilot boat went out to greet the Assiniboine on its arrival. Not sure what the reason was. The pilot boat gives a little salute, along with the Assiniboine. They came to town to load ore at the CN dock.

  • CSL Tadoussac - Canadian Laker Takes On Gitche Gumee

    6:55

Here is the CSL Tadoussac departing Superior, Wisconsin on April 21, 2021 with a load of iron ore she picked up from the Burlington Northern #5 dock. After backing away from the dock, she makes a pivot until her bow is pointed towards the Superior entry, before kicking in the throttle and making her exit. On her way out, she passed by workers who were dismantling sections of the north pier. This work is a continuation of the work that started in 2020. So if you're hearing jackhammers during this video, that's where it's coming from! Unfortunately, we didn't get a salute from the Tadoussac, but that's the norm for most Canadian ships visiting Superior. (sigh)

The 730-foot CSL Tadoussac was launched in 1969 and is powered by a single 6-cylinder 9,600 b.h.p. Sulzer model 6RND76 diesel engine. She was the last laker built for Canada Steamship Lines with the classic forward-mounted pilot house and is one of only two classic-style lakers still sailing for CSL today (with the other being the Frontenac). In the year 2000, the Tadoussac's center section was rebuilt and widened, along with a rebuild of her self-unloading system. This rebuild gave her a bulge in the hull close to the waterline. The rebuilt unloading system featured a covered single tunnel belt, remotely operated gates, and a comprehensive dust suppression system. She currently has a the capacity to haul 30,051 tons of ore at a mid-summer draft of 28 feet 3 inches.

In the background of the video (around 1:10) you can see the old gravity-fed Burlington Northern docks for loading iron ore. Docks 1 and 2 have two sets of lighting towers than allowed ships to be loaded 24 hours a day when Superior was a much busier place for ore boats. Dock 1 is also the place where the Edmund Fitzgerald picked up her final load of iron ore on November 9, 1975... the day before she sank in a storm on Gitche Gumee (the Ojibwe name for Lake Superior). These docks are now abandoned, but they stand as monuments to a time that has since passed.
