  • CalyxOS Review: The Private & Secure Android ROM For Everyone!

    9:46

CalyxOS aims to bring privacy and security by default to everybody. This review will evaluate CalyxOS, a custom Android ROM, from the Calyx Institute to break down what it means for you. CalyxOS features FOSS, privacy-by-default, with MicroG for better Android App compatibility without Google Play Services.

    A) Performance differences between GrapheneOS & CalyxOS are likely exacerbated by lower-end hardware.
    B) CalyxOS got an installation tool:
    C) We’ll be doing a very thorough test between Graphene, CalyxOS, iPhone SE, and Stock android very shortly.
    D) To clarify, GrapheneOS serves a demographic, but it’s one and sole purpose is security. There are many compromises you may have to make on Graphene, an issue greatly improved by CalyxOS.

  • Calyx OS - Next Android Competitor?

    6:19

    CalyxOS
CalyxOS minimizes the tracking, surveillance, and spying done by phone manufacturers, mobile phone service providers, internet service providers, advertising companies, data miners, and malicious hackers. The operating system is designed to ensure maximum usability and flexibility, so that you have an array of choices available to ensure your security and privacy.

CalyxOS is designed with the needs of human rights frontline defenders, journalists, lawyers, and political and social activist groups in mind.

    Features include:

Verified Boot to prevent tampering with the phone's operating system, using cryptographic signatures
Security and privacy by default: Instead of the bloatware, spyware, and backdoors installed by default in many versions of Android, CalyxOS includes a suite of privacy, security, and censorship circumvention apps available out of the box, including encrypted phone calls and texts with Signal, anonymous web browsing with Tor, advertising, tracker blocking and private search using DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser, encrypted email on your phone using K-9 Email client with OpenKeyChain and Yubikey support, free VPN service from Calyx and from Riseup.net and Universal Two Factor authentication using Yubikey hardware tokens.
Android without spyware: CalyxOS has reconfigured Android to avoid Google's spyware and tracking. It uses the F-droid app store for installing and updating free software applications, and strips out Google's privacy invasive business model, replacing it with microG, a free software re-implementation of Google’s proprietary services which allows you to run nearly every app from Google's Play Store without giving Google access to your phone.
Regular security updates and patches: CalyxOS receives the latest security updates for Android, fixing software vulnerabilities and security flaws that can put your phone at risk.

  • Android without Google: the /e/ Project blew me away!

    15:23

I've been trying to degoogle my life as much as possible lately, but there are 2 main holdouts: youtube, and Android. While I still haven't found a competent enough youtube alternative, apart maybe from LBRY, I might just have found the Android replacement I was looking for! Let's take a look at the /e/ operating system !

The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there!

    What is /e/

e is a nonprofit project, backed by the /e/ foundation. Its goal is to provide a compeltely de-googled version of Android. This is in the strictest sense, as anything that might call to Google has been plucked out of the operating system: the google services, app store, default applications, even the time server and DNS have been changed.

The /e/ operating system is the result: it can be installed on a lot of Android smartphones, from a fairly wide selection of manufacturers, or you can order a refurbished smartphone from the /e/ website More recently, /e/ has become available on the Fairphone 3 as well, which you can buy preinstalled with /e/ from their online store.

Gael also told me that the PinePhone might be a target at some point, and they already had a port for the PineBook.

    /e/ account

As you won't be using any Google services, the /e/ project feels that you also need a few services for day to day use, that's why they provide you with a free /e/ account. This is basically your own user account on the /e/ project's Nextcloud, with an email address that ends in e.email, as well as contacts, a calendar, some file storage, photos, and tasks.

In term of features, the /e/ team is also working on End to End encryption, which is proving tricky to implement, as well as the ability to self host the /e/ online services if you want to have as much storage space as you'd like and control your data 100%.

They also have an SMS to cloud feature that allows you to keep your messages when you change phones, and are working on the ability to let users log their geolocation in the cloud if they want to, to be able to find their device if it gets lost or stolen.

    The /e/ OS experience

The /e/ OS is very inspired by iOS in terms of look and feel, out of the box. You get a default grid of icons, some widgets when you swipe left, no standard Android app drawer, and a global search if you swipe from the top.

The OS ships with default apps for everything you might need out of the box, and all of these apps are open source, just like the OS itself.

Most of these are forks of other open source applications, for example, the web browser is a de-googled fork of Chromium, the mail client is a fork of K-9, the camera is a fork of OpenCamera...

Some apps are the default Android applications, like the contact, clock, calculator, keyboard, or gallery, and some are just preinstalled apps available anywhere alse, like MagicEarth for maps, PDFViewer Plus for PDFs, or OpenTasks for the todo list.

Using these applications, you also won't help but notice the Android roots behind them: older tab bars, three dot menus and pop-ups abound, and look like the stuff you'd have been using on an Android Kit Kat smartphone. This doesn't mean they're bad, but it does look a bit dated compared to the smooth interfaces of today. Some might prefer this older style, but I know I don't.

But why would you prefer /e/ over another Android custom ROM ? Well, as Gael Duval puts it, they are not targeting tech savvy users, or geeks. They want to offer a simple option that even beginners can get to grips with, without jumping through too many hoops and sacrificing convenience.

/e/ offers integrated services out of the box so you don't have to look for them intially, they put a lot of effort in the launcher user experience, and they are 100% Google Free. They are probably the only one to address the low level stuff as well, like the connectivity checks, or the NTP server, while most other custom ROMs still send information to Google.

    Installing apps

/e/ doesn't try to reinvent the wheel here: they provide their own app store, that is basically a mirror of the applications available on the play store. Not all of them will be as up to date as the ones available on Googl's markeplace, and some of them won't be available, but the selection is pretty large here.

You also get some nice touches that you won't find on competing stores, like a privacy score. This is determined by scanning the apks and identifying the permissions they require, as well as the trackers they include, so you know, when you install an app on the /e/ store, what it will collect, and if you can reliably use it or not.

  • The Ultimate DEGOOGLED ANDROID ROM, now even BETTER!

    14:57

Download Safing's Portmaster for FREE and take control of your network traffic:

I already talked about the /e/ Android ROM, a while ago, and while I really love this ultimate de-googled version of Android, there were also a few concerns about security, look and feel, how degoogled it all really is, and where the data is going. The /e/ project has also been updated quite a lot since my last video, so I think it's time to take another look at /e/.

List of stuff /e/ removes from AOSP:

    ## Older Android version, looks and feels like older Android

Ok, so one of the main comments I got on the video is that /e/ is based on an old version of Android. It was Android 8 in my previous video. Of course, /e/ also has releases based on newer Android versions.
On my Galaxy S9+, it goes up to Android Q (Android 10), which is also the case for a lot of phones out there.

    ## Looks dated

One of my main problems with /e/ was that all the apps looked disjointed, using different accent colors, and sharing a kit-kat era look and feel.

I can happily report that with versions 0.15 and 0.16, this is no longer the case. The default apps, which are forks of open source android apps, now sport a nice white and blue color scheme, except for the email client and the maps app, which haven't been updated yet.

    ## You're just giving your data to someone else

Another common comment I got on the previous video was that you were just giving your data to the /e/ project instead of giving it to Google.

While that, in itself, is a weird argument, as /e/ is a small nonprofit, and would really struggle to do anything with that data, it also doesn't apply here at all.

First, the account isn't mandatory: you can skip if if you'd prefer to use what you already have.

Second, the data you send to your /e/ account is encrypted, the /e/ project can't access it.

And third, /e/ doesn't sell ads, so they wouldn't even have any use for your data in the first place.

Now, speaking of the /e/ account, they only offered 1Gb of free storage, which was a meager amount, and you couldn't really upgrade that.

They now announced that, while the free tier is still only 1Gb, you can up that to 20Gb for 2 euros per month, all the way up to 1Tb for 13 euros per month. It's pricier than what the big tech companies offer, but it's still not a terrible deal, especially as this data isn't shared or accessed. If I didn't already have my own Nextcloud server, that's definitely something I'd be interested in, even if I didn't use /e/ on my phone.

The only issue is that this ecloud is basically access to a Nextcloud account, but you don't get to install your own apps on it

    ## Not completely degoogled, or as de-googled as Lineage OS

Now another common comment I got was just use Lineage OS instead. While /e/ is a fork of Lineage, it's also going a lot further to remove Google stuff from AOSP.

Lineage still uses the Google DNS servers, so they know what your device is trying to access, and they also use Google to connect to captive portals, like airport wifi.
It also uses Google services to aid GPS positioning, and as the Android Open Source Project webview, which calls to Google as well.

/e/ removes the connectivity check to Google, replacing it with their own servers, they removed calls to the Google time servers and replaced them with the standard provider for internet time, and while the DNS servers aren't changed automatically, you can change them in the settings as well.

So, in short, Lienage OS is great, but if you want to remove every bit of Google from your phone, /e/ is a better option.

Now some people were also saying that /e/ has stolen code from Lineage OS and other apps, without giving credit. This has been proven to be completely false, as they are clearly stating what they based their stuff on in their FAQ:

    ## Other concerns

Smartphones preinstalled with /e/ weren't available in the US or Canada when I made my previous video, now they are.

Some concerns were raised about security, especially since /e/ doesn't use the Play store, so how could we be sure that apps were unaltered binaries? the /e/ store uses the CleanAPK repositories.

  • Secure mobile engineering - the case study of CalyxOS

    39:00

CalyxOS is an open source Android-based Operating System, sponsored by the Calyx Institute, a 501(c) non-profit dedicated to making privacy and security available for all.

The team takes the code Google releases as open source to the Android Open Source Project, and tries to make it usable for everyone while preserving their privacy, and also keeping the security model Google intended intact. This creates some interesting scenarios, where being in the control of the Operating System lets you make pretty much any modification you’d like, but lots of implications have to be considered.

  • Ubuntu Touch on the Pinephone - is this the best Linux mobile interface?

    15:51

I already covered Phosh, the mobile port of GNOME, and Plasma Mobile, both running on the pinephone. Now it's time to take a look at the other main alternative for mobile Linux interfaces, the one that has been around for a while now: Ubuntu Touch, or Lomiri. Let's take a look at how well it runs

This shell is based on gestures starting from the screen edges. A short swipe from left to right will bring a launcher with the default applications pinned to it, and your current open applications as well, appearing on top of the pinned shortcuts.
A longer swipe from the left edge will bring the whole list of applications.

If you swipe from the right towards the left in a short motion, you'll switch to the next open app. If you make a long swipe from the right edge, then you'll get to a multitasking view, with apps displayed in a 3D layout.

You can swipe an app's card up to close it, or tap an app to resume it.

Finally, a swipe from the top edge of the screen will bring the notifications, and the quick settings, which don't display as on most other operating systems: they're in a straight line, that you can scroll from left to right, and tap each icon to get to a quick few shortcuts, like enabling or disabling a specific feature, or dive deeper into the settings.

    ## The Applications
Out of the box, you get a nice calculator that handles rotation beautifully to display more options, and lets you swipe from the bottom in portrait to still get access to these options. The default calendar app looks good, with an Agenda view that shows your various events in order, a day, week, month, and year view.

I won't dwell on the camera app, as support for the pinephone camera is still in its infancy, it's rare that it even displays an image.

The Clock application lets you add various clocks from all around the world, start a timer, or use a stopwatch. Swiping from the bottom in the clock tab lets you create alarms, although I would have preferred alarms to be a full tab in the app instead of hiding that behind a swipe.

The contacts app does what you'd expect, list your contacts and allow to set some as favorites and you can swipe from the bottom to create a new one. The file manager looks good, although it's a bit slow to start, and lets you create files, and change how the directories look.

The messaging app works as you'd expect, letting you type messages and send them to your contacts. You can also swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to start a new message.

The web browser is alright, if a bit slow to start. It lets you pick your search engine and homepage, and display web pages in desktop mode, but there are no sync capabilities for history, bookmarks, or passwords, so it's not going to be fantastic to use.

There is also a terminal app that looks really good and has quick aliases in the bottom left corner. The Notes app is also pretty competent, letting you swipe up from the bottom to create a new note, and syncs with evernote.

This leaves us with the phone dialer, letting you pick a contact, or just type the number you want to call, and the weather app, which is really black and white and pretty spartan, and it reminds me of a windows phone app.

    ## The Settings
The settings page uses a sensible icon grid.

Ubuntu Touch is pretty barebones in that regard: in terms of customization, you can change the wallpaper, the ringtone for calls and messages, and that's about it. A few apps let you switch to a dark mode in the settings, and some offer to respect a system preference, but that's not something I could find in the settings.

    ## The AppStore
The OpenStore serves as the App Store for Ubuntu Touch. It's not a package manager like you could find on other Mobile Linux alternatives: no way to download a desktop program here, at least not graphically.

You'll get apps that were made specifically for ubuntu touch, and there are around 400 of these in total.
You can also get a few Matrix clients, and a nice email client called Dekko 2, among other applications.

Updates are handled in the system settings, with over the air updates for the system itself, and for the apps, grouped at the same place.
