    Dr. Miguel Alcubierre was inspired by Star Trek the Next Generation's example of warp drive faster than light technology on the starship Enterprise. In 1994 he wrote a paper on how we could bend and warp space and time to travel faster than light within the rules of Einstein's general relativity. NASA has and is currently exploring if it is possible to bend the fabric of space and achieve hyper fast space travel with the Eagle Works lab. John Michael Godier spoke with Dr. Miguel Alcubierre on the feasibility of the Alcubierre warp drive and if there has been any developments within physics, including the use of dark matter or dark energy, and anti-gravity, to be able to make this possible.

    Faster than the Speed of Light

    ABSTRACT: In this talk I will give a short introduction to some of the basic concepts of Einstein’s special theory of relativity, which is at the basis of all of modern physics. In particular, I will concentrate on the concept of causality, and why causality implies that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light in vacuum. I will later discuss some of the basic ideas behind Einstein’s other great theory, General Relativity, which is the modern theory of gravity and postulates that the geometry space-time is dynamic and the presence of large concentrations of mass and energy produce a “curvature” in space-time. I will then talk about how the curvature of space-time can be used in several ways to travel “faster than the speed of light” by distorting the geometry away from that of flat space. In particular, I will discuss the ideas behind the geometric model for a “warp drive”.

    BIOGRAPHY: Prof. Miguel Alcubierre was born in Mexico City in 1964. He obtained his Physicist degree from the National University in Mexico (UNAM) in 1988, and a PhD in Physics from the University of Wales in 1994. He later worked for several years as an Adjunct Professor at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam, Germany. Since 2002 he joined the Nuclear Sciences Institute at UNAM where he is now a Full Professor, and since June 2012 the Director. His research is in the area of numerical relativity, which is concerned with the computational simulation of astrophysical systems using Einstein’s theory of general relativity. In this area he has concentrated on the study of sources of gravitational waves, and particularly black hole collisions. He is author of more than 50 publications, as well as a textbook published by Oxford University Press.

    HISTORY OF THE HERZBERG MEMORIAL PUBLIC LECTURE: In 2000, the CAP Council made a decision in to change the Sunday lecture given at its Annual Congress from a keynote lecture to a public lecture. The lecture would be named the “Herzberg Memorial Public Lecture” in honour of Nobel Laureate Dr. Gerhard Herzberg, longstanding member of the CAP, in recognition of Dr. Herzberg’s known desire to increase the awareness and appreciation of science amongst the public, particularly youth.     The Alcubierre warp field as described by Miguel Alcubierre would help us surpass the speed of light many times which means that if we had a ship that could go 10 times the speed of light, it would take only 153 days to reach Proxima Centauri.
    Much more reasonable I would say. But building a warp drive is not an easy task.


    Miguel Alcubierre is a theoretical physicist famous for the Warp Field theory.
    In May 1994 he published a paper titled “The Warp Drive: Hyper-fast travel within general relativity” however, his goal with this paper, contrary to popular belief had little to do with warp drives, it was to show that a distortion of space and time is indeed possible within the realms of general relativity, and therefore we could travel faster than the speed of light.

    Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explains the possibility of going faster than the speed of light. If we look at the Einstein's special relativity theory, the speed of light in vacuum has constant velocity of 186,282 miles per second. If you could travel at this speed, you could go around the Earth 7.5 times in one second.



    In 1994, Miguel Alcubierre proposed a method that would take us beyond the speed of light limit. In his mathematical theory, he used two points in space-time to demonstrate the expansion and contraction of space fabric. The idea of Alcubierre's theory was that we could use this space-time warp to make an object travel faster than light.


    Neil deGrasse Tyson takes examples from science fiction works like Star Trek to demonstrate and explain how an advanced civilization could be capable of manipulating the fabric of space-time itself in order to travel faster than the speed of light.


    Einstein's theory of special relativity states that energy and mass are interchangeable, and speed of light travel is impossible for material objects that, unlike photons, have a non-zero rest mass.

    Einstein's theory of general relativity mathematically predicts the existence of wormholes, but none have been discovered to date. Even if a wormhole could form, it would most likely be very unstable. Wormholes are still speculative because nobody really knows if you could pass through it. The math suggests that you need some sort of exotic material to pry the throat of the wormhole opening so that it wont collapse in on it self. Even then it is possibly unstable.

    Alcubierre warp drive - faster than light travel? Is Warp speed possible? Enterprise from Star Trek can go 9000 times the speed of light. By comparison, the fastest manmade object, the Juno probe goes 0.0002 times the speed of light. At this rate, it would take 20,000 years to reach the nearest alien planet, which with the Enterprise, would take only 4.5 hours.

    But isn’t faster than light travel forbidden by Einstein’s special theory of relativity? There is a loophole. Mexican physicist, and Star Trek fan, Miguel Alcubierre published a paper on “The warp drive”. He manipulated Einstein’s equations of general relativity to make a warp field emerge - regardless of whether other laws of physics would allow it. But his equations are mathematically consistent solutions to Einstein’s equations.

    And this is how Alcubierre’s warp drive would work: Take a space ship and put a bubble of space around it. If you can compress space in front of the bubble, and expand space behind the bubble, then you can make the bubble of space along with the space ship, move. This would be like riding a wave on a surfboard. This is where the loophole is in Einstein’s speed limit, that nothing can move faster than the speed of light. This speed limit only applies to objects traveling within space, not the movement of space itself. Space can move at any speed.

    So that bubble of space in Alcubierre’s geometric solution can move at any arbitrary speed, theoretically, even 9000 times the speed of light. But Can space really move at faster than light speed? Yes.

    Space is being expanded in the back of our spaceship, and being contracted in front of it. Can space expand and contract like this? Yes, Space is allowed to do both. Space is contracting around you and earth right now. That’s what gravity is. Similarly, Space can expand too. It is expanding right now on a cosmological scale.

    Alcubeirre’s warp drive, creates a bubble around the ship, which is like the surfboard. The ship sits within this bubble. Your ship does not move within the bubble itself, so Einstein’s laws are not violated. To make space warp locally around a spaceship like this requires a lot of mass or it’s Energy equivalent via E=MC^2. And this is not just regular mass or regular energy. This is negative mass and negative energy.

    How do you get anti-gravity? You need negative matter – or exotic matter. This is something that would have negative gravity. The problem is Negative matter is not known to exist. Note that negative matter is not anti-matter. Antimatter does not have negative gravity. It has positive gravity. You could substitute the energy equivalent of negative matter, and that is negative Energy. But again, what the heck is negative energy? This is not the same as an absence of energy. It is energy with a value less than 0 that would allow you to expand space-time. But Antigravity has never been seen in a lab.

    However, anti gravity, negative mass, and negative energy are not forbidden in Einstein’s equations. Could this mean that if we are clever enough, could we create it? Let’s presume that we could. There is group at NASA called the Advanced Propulsion Team, also known as Eagleworks, who is working with this assumption. Harold White’s calculations show that a 10 meter diameter ship could go at 10 times the speed of light.

    White’s team has even tested the feasibility of warping space by doing a very small scale table top test. They have attempted to slightly warp the trajectory of a photon, changing the distance it travels over a fixed length. The first test was done in 2013 and was inconclusive.

    Is negative energy even realistic? What about the Casimir effect displaying negative energy? This is a quantum mechanical phenomenon that occurs when two conducting plates are brought very close together. When this is done, a certain proportion of the virtual particle frequencies between the plates are excluded, because not all frequencies will fit between the 10 nm space.

    Frequencies with wavelengths higher than 10 nanometers will be excluded, whereas, all frequencies will fit outside the plates. The pressure outside the plates is greater than the pressure inside the plates. This creates is a real mechanical energy that can be measured.

    Some scientists have proposed harnessing this negative energy of the vacuum on a large scale. But this is flawed, because the energy between the plates is not negative. No energy be harnessed to make a warp drive using the Casimir effect?

    There is one observational phenomenon that should give us hope that negative energy or anti gravity may exist. 70% of our universe is made of this. It is expanding space. It is possible that sometime in the future, if we can develop a better understanding of dark energy, we can learn to harness it, and use it to power the warp engine.

    When I talk about energy conservation around 7 mins, I am NOT referring to the conservation of the stress-energy-tensor. This is conservation is always fulfilled if Einstein's field equations are fulfilled by way of the (contracted) Bianchi identities. I am talking about the conservation of the four-momentum (the integrated quantity) that is associated with the warp-drive bubble. In an asymptotically flat space-time, it should be conserved. If the bubble accelerates, it isn't. (As you'd expect.)

    Alcubierre Warp Drive also known as Alcubierre Drive or Warp Drive has been discussed here. There are various ways like teleportation, wormholes and warp drive, that can be used to travel at very high speed, even faster than the speed of light. Here in this video I will discuss the concept of warp drive. The idea of warp drive is highly fascinating which is based on distorting the fabric of space and time to achieve a speed many times more than that of the light.
    According to scientists, it is possible to travel faster than light
    with the help of Alcubierre warp drive. The Alcubierre warp drive was proposed by Mexican theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre and is based on a solution of Einstein's field equations in general relativity.
    But how is it possible and what are the requirements for warp drive? Since we know any object having mass, cannot travel faster than light as it will go against the laws of Physics. Since to achieve this speed infinite energy is required, which is practically not possible. Then how it is possible with warp drive to travel faster than the speed of light?
    Actually in warp drive a spacecraft does not have to travel faster than light within a local reference frame. The spacecraft would traverse distances by contracting space in front of it and expanding the space behind it. This mechanism results in effective faster-than-light travel. In this way The Alcubierre warp drive shifts the space around an object.
    So it's more like pulling the destination towards it while pushing its starting point back, instead of actually traveling faster than light.
    This makes it possible for the object to reach to its destination faster than light would in normal space. Therefore no laws of Physics are broken.
    But now the basic problem is, how to contract and expand the space time fabric that is required for the warp drive.
    So let's discuss how this can be done.
    According to great physicist Albert Einstein, any object having mass can create curvature in space time fabric. In other words, it can contract the space. Larger the mass, more it can contract the space. But we need extremely large amount of mass, equivalent to the mass of a black hole to contract the space so that it can be used in warp drive practically.
    So we need to construct an engine, powerful enough to control a small black hole. This engine can be placed in the front part of the spacecraft so that the Space in front of the spacecraft can be contracted.
    As I have discussed earlier that for warp drive we need to contract the space in front of the spacecraft and expand the space behind the spacecraft. Now we know that we can use very large mass to contract the space. But we do not know how to expand the space.
    But it is not impossible. As We know, our universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. According to scientists, dark energy and dark matter are considered responsible for this expansion. So one possible method to expand the space is using dark energy or dark matter for warp drive.
    There is one more technique that we can use for the expansion of space. As I just told you that a normal mass i.e. positive mass can be used to contract the space. It Means, if we could find a negative mass, then it will do just opposite to it. So a negative mass would cause expansion of the space. We can use this system in the back side of the spacecraft, that will help in expanding the space that is present behind the spacecraft and hence warp drive will become possible.
    There is one interesting theory, known as dark fluid theory. The dark fluid theory combines the concept of dark matter, dark energy and negative mass. If we could find the dark fluid somehow, the warp drive would become a reality and traveling faster than light would not be impossible.

    The general concept of the warp drive was first introduced by John W. Campbell in his 1931 novel Islands of Space. Since then it has captured the attention of many science-fiction writers.

    As with many technologies found within the pages of a good novel, a great number of them eventually find their way into reality. And that’s because of this little something we call—inspiration.

    Alcubierre was no exception—having been inspired to mathematically work out a model for a potential real-life warp drive enduring an episode of Star Trek.

    Though he never intended to develop it further, he did, however, inspire others including NASA and us.

    From day one the drive has been primarily associated with FTL travel. But most of you are probably not aware that the warp drive has multiple functions.

    In about 50 years we will be able to travel FTL, but until then we can still benefit from the warp drive tech today, and in a moment I’ll tell you how we can do just that.

    But first, let’s provide you with a detailed explanation of the warp drive and how it actually distorts or curves spacetime.

The Andromeda galaxy will hit us at great speed. As a result of the collision, some stars will be thrown into distant space, while others will form new solar systems. But most likely, all life in the new Milkomeda or Milkdromeda galaxy will cease to exist. But let's look to the future and find out what will happen to us people.

    Well, humanity decided it was time to leave the Earth, and now we live very far away in another galaxy. There can be an infinite number of planets in the Universe on which humans can theoretically live. One of the main requirements — the planet must orbit the star in its habitable zone. We find similar star systems almost every year, and have recently found the nearest one. It’s Proxima Centauri. There are at least two planets around this red dwarf on which we can build our new home. But the problem is that this system is as far as 4.2 light-years away...

    Building a warp drive… It’s an exciting topic if for no other reason than the fact that we are close.

    How are we close?

    Our understanding has crossed the threshold of limitation.

    Pretty all that remains is the physical development—assembly—and testing of such.

    That may sound easy—and to a limited degree it is relatively easy—but that’s only one third the equation.

    Much supportive infrastructure is required first.

    That’s means in order to build a warp drive starship, we must first also develop and build the necessary infrastructure—or at least lead, and/or pave the way for others to do so instead.

    In our very first video, the Alcubierre-White Warp Drive—we explained how a warp drive works—at least in theory—but how about in practice?

    The Alcubierre drive, Alcubierre warp drive, or Alcubierre metric (referring to metric tensor) is a speculative idea based on a solution of Einstein's field equations in general relativity as proposed by Mexican theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre, by which a spacecraft could achieve apparent faster-than-light travel if a configurable energy-density field lower than that of vacuum (that is, negative mass) could be created.

    Rather than exceeding the speed of light within a local reference frame, a spacecraft would traverse distances by contracting space in front of it and expanding space behind it, resulting in effective faster-than-light travel. Objects cannot accelerate to the speed of light within normal spacetime; instead, the Alcubierre drive shifts space around an object so that the object would arrive at its destination faster than light would in normal space without breaking any physical laws.

  • Travel Faster Than Light

    Is it possible to travel faster than the speed of light?
    That's what we'll explore in this video.

    Travel faster than light and reach planets at the ends of the universe seems trivial in science fiction, but can it really happen?
    Thinking about it, a Mexican theoretical physicist named Miguel Alcubierre published in 1994 the following paper: “The warp drive: hyper-fast travel within general relativity”, where he explored the deformation effect that gravity generates in space-time according to Einstein's theory of General Relativity.
    Einstein's theory says that objects contract space-time according to their mass, but is it possible to expand space-time? This is what Dr. Alcubierre conjectured in his publication.
    In it, a ship would be contained in a local space-time bubble that would contract the space-time fabric in front of the ship and expand it behind.
    This way the ship would be carried forward as a surfer is carried by the wave.
    For that, the ship would use a cylindrical ring with negative mass around the manned area.
    This could make a ship travel at speeds without limit, because, we know from the expansion of the universe that galaxies very distant from us are moving away at a speed greater than that of light, but don’t violate the theory of Relativity because it is the space-time continuum that deforms faster than light, and there is nothing forbidding that.
    The problem with Alcubierre's warp engine is that the equations require negative mass to deform the space-time, and nobody knows what this is to this day.
    In addition, the necessary mass would be greater than the mass of the entire universe, which is obviously not feasible.
    But others read this paper and decided to explore the concept further, reaching a mass equivalent to Jupiter’s, which was still too much mass.
    Years later, NASA physicist Harold G. White reduced the mass to about 1,500 pounds modifying the spacecraft to use two toroids instead of just a cylindrical ring. But 1,500 pounds is still a lot when it comes to something we don't know if exists.
    Following his research, Dr. White saw that by oscillating the fields of both toroids the mass could be reduced to mere micro-grams.
    A spacecraft using toroids oscillating the field of negative matter could, in theory, travel ten times faster than light, if the toroids were 30 feet in diameter.
    But even if negative matter is discovered or manufactured, most scientists say that such a ship would reach 10% of the speed of light, which is already incredible, because it would open the Solar System for immediate exploration.
    To give you an idea, instead of 7 or 8 months to reach Mars, as we do today, we would get there in less than an hour, when Earth and Mars are closer together.
    But this technology has a very dangerous Achilles' heel.
    When traveling at superluminal speeds, the front of the space-time bubble generated by the spacecraft would trap debris, atoms and photons in the spacecraft's trajectory.
    This is a direct consequence of the oscillating field model used to decrease the negative matter mass.
    Upon reaching its destination, the spacecraft would turn off the oscillating fields and return to the local space-time releasing all atoms, photons and debris in front of it.
    Since the ship would have traveled light years, the amount of matter and energy released would be so great that it would destroy the destination planet if it gets to it.
    In conclusion, the Alcubierre engine, if ever created, has the potential to open the Cosmos for colonization and exploration, but provided it is used with great care!

    Faster-than-light Space Travel is Now One Step Closer to Engineering Using Warp drives.
    It's hard living in a relativistic Universe, where even the nearest stars are so far away and the speed of light is absolute. It is little wonder then why science fiction franchises routinely employ FTL (faster-than-light) as a plot device.

    Push a button, press a petal, and that fancy drive system – whose workings no one can explain – will send us to another location in space-time.

    However, in recent years, the scientific community has become understandably excited and skeptical about claims that a particular concept – the Alcubierre Warp Drive – might actually be feasible.

    The Alcubierre drive or Alcubierre warp drive (or Alcubierre metric, referring to metric tensor) is a speculative idea based on a solution of Einstein's field equations in general relativity as proposed by Mexican theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre, by which a spacecraft could achieve apparent faster-than-light travel if a configurable energy-density field lower than that of vacuum (that is, negative mass) could be created.

    Rather than exceeding the speed of light within a local reference frame, a spacecraft would traverse distances by contracting space in front of it and expanding space behind it, resulting in effective faster-than-light travel. Objects cannot accelerate to the speed of light within normal spacetime; instead, the Alcubierre drive shifts space around an object so that the object would arrive at its destination faster than light would in normal space without breaking any physical laws.[1]

    Although the metric proposed by Alcubierre is consistent with the Einstein field equations, it may not be physically meaningful, in which case a drive will not be possible. Even if it is physically meaningful, its possibility would not necessarily mean that a drive can be constructed. The proposed mechanism of the Alcubierre drive implies a negative energy density and therefore requires exotic matter. So if exotic matter with the correct properties does not exist, then the drive could not be constructed. However, at the close of his original article[2] Alcubierre argued (following an argument developed by physicists analyzing traversable wormholes[3][4]) that the Casimir vacuum between parallel plates could fulfill the negative-energy requirement for the Alcubierre drive.

    Another possible issue is that, although the Alcubierre metric is consistent with Einstein's equations, general relativity does not incorporate quantum mechanics. Some physicists have presented arguments to suggest that a theory of quantum gravity (which would incorporate both theories) would eliminate those solutions in general relativity that allow for backwards time travel (see the chronology protection conjecture) and thus make the Alcubierre drive invalid.
