  • Still Face Experiment: Dr. Edward Tronick

    2:49

Check out Ed’s new book, coauthored with Dr. Claudia M. Gold:

Copyright © 2007 ZERO TO THREE
Ed Tronick ( director of UMass Boston's Infant-Parent Mental Health Program ( and Distinguished Professor of Psychology, discusses the cognitive abilities of infants to read and react to their social surroundings. The video is an excerpt from Lovett Productions' HELPING BABIES FROM THE BENCH: USING THE SCIENCE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD IN COURT.

Using the Still Face Experiment, in which a mother denies her baby attention for a short period of time, Tronick describes how prolonged lack of attention can move an infant from good socialization, to periods of bad but repairable socialization. In ugly situations the child does not receive any chance to return to the good, and may become stuck.

And he has a challenge for men: See if you can use the same qualities that you feel make you a man to go deeper, he says. Your strength, your bravery, your toughness: Are you brave enough to be vulnerable? Are you strong enough to be sensitive? Are you confident enough to listen to the women in your life?

  • HOW TO MIRROR GAZE: What Will Happen If You Stare At Yourself In The Mirror ????

    7:26

This is how to mirror gaze. If you stare at yourself in the mirror for more than 10 minutes then your mirror gazing experience will start to become more of a soul staring experience where self love and spirituality become a part of what you are doing. Mirror staring is hard to begin with because when you are mirror gazing you have to overcome that inner narrative that is talking to you and taking away your attention. People have different mirror gazing experiences depending on whether you make it your own personal open minded meditation experience or whether you decide to mirror gaze very close minded. After 10 minutes people wonder what will happen if you stare at yourself in the mirror directly gazing into your eyes.

Mirror meditation can have many benefits and there are different techniques for doing it. personally, I try to make my mirror gazing experience similar to a mantra meditation where I stare deeply into the glimmer of light within my eyes. This often takes me on a journey through space and time and delivers me to my soul where I often find tranquility and inner peace

People often ask if mirror gazing dangerous? I would like to reiterate that you come from the experience very positive but obviously it depends on whether you are open minded or close minded to your mirror gazing/soul staring experience.

The power of mirror gazing is within you. This is how to mirro gaze and the benefits of mirror gazing. Mirror gazing benefits are described during the video and this is what will happen if you stare at yourself in the mirror! ????

  • What Happens When You Stare At The Sun For Too Long

    3:24

We all know the harmful effects of the sun touching our skin, so we ready ourselves with sunscreen to block the rays. But what about our eyes? What would happen if we happened to stare directly at the sun?

Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more.

    --------------------------------------------------

Following is the transcript of the video:

Whether it’s to map the stars, spy on other planets, or study the sun, humans have been looking to the skies for millennia. But some objects are safer to observe than others.

For example, astronomer Mark Thompson put a pig’s eye behind a regular telescope aimed at the sun and it burned a hole straight through the lens in about 20 seconds.

Now, looking at the sun through a telescope is an especially terrible idea but just how bad is it to glance up with the naked eye?

On a clear day, the sun shines up to 5,000 times brighter than an average light bulb. When something that bright strikes your eye, a few things can happen.

If it’s only for a moment, the worst you’ll experience is a blurry splotch on your vision called an after image.

Normally, light reaches the retina at the back of your eye, where it triggers photoreceptors that relay the information to your brain. This is how you are able to see anything.

But bombard them with too much light at once, and you can actually damage the cells and proteins that help them process light. Since your retina has no pain receptors, the damage won’t hurt, but it will leave that blurry splotch on your vision.

Usually, it clears up in a few minutes that is, unless you keep staring.

Now, you’re doing more than just overloading your retina. For starters, you’re giving your eyes an abnormally high dose of UV radiation the same stuff that causes sunburns. Like your skin, the cornea at the front of your eye can also burn. And that will hurt.

The cornea protects the rest of your eye and is therefore covered in pain receptors that alert you whenever a pesky eyelash is on the loose.

But UV radiation isn’t the only issue. Too much visible light can penetrate your eye and damage the retinal tissue, which causes a condition called solar retinitis. This means parts of your retina can no longer process light normally, so you can end up with entire chunks of your vision blurred out.

Depending on the extent of the damage, recovery can take weeks, months, and in severe cases over a year. But in rare cases, the damage is so extreme it never heals, leading to a rare condition called solar retinopathy. This usually only shows up in reckless eclipse gazers.

Turns out, during a solar eclipse, most of the sun’s light is blocked, which actually can trick your brain into thinking it’s safe to stare.

Normally, our bodies have a built-in defense mechanism against staring at the sun. Specifically, when we squint we look up, which minimizes the amount of light coming in and protects our cornea and retina.

But during a solar eclipse, the sun doesn’t appear bright enough to trigger our defense mechanisms so we can end up staring for longer than is safe.

Suffice it to say, there’s nothing good about staring at the sun. So do your eyes a favor and avoid looking at it.

After all, there are around 6,000 stars in the night sky you can safely observe for as long as you wish.

  • Episode 2 of A Deadly Stare

    35

Once again, ignore the ***. Youtube won't let me paragraph this chapter either. Oh well xD

***As I descended the steps, I knew my mom would try and stop be. I didn't want her to, though. I knew if she did, I would turn on her. As I got closer to her, I could sense her anxiety. My mom just stared as I walked out the door. I didn't want to do this, but tell me how I could stop it. Oh thats right, I CAN'T!!!
***I continued my walk to Lindsay's house. I ran into about 6 people and of coarse, me having that gift, they screamed and ran. As I was walking, I was trying to snap out of it, but I couldn't. I knew this would be the end of my best friend. Even worse she would die at my hand.
***When I reacher her house, I slammed on the door and it opened. I didn't want it to. I walked up the steps to her room. I banged on the door until it opened. I saw the fear in her eyes as I entered the room. This was it. It was her last day on this earth and I caused her death.
***I couldn't describe what I had done. I just couldn't. I sat there, now out of my violent mode, crying, feeling so awful. This was the first time I'd actually killed someone with my gift. I feared the next time I got a craving I would kill yet again.
I finally got my energy back, and I got up. Still wobbly on my feet, I managed to get down the stairs without falling. I couldn't stop crying. My best friend was gone. Forever. It was my fault. That is what destroyed me.
***As I walked back home I got another text from Lynn. Nice job killing your best friend. You next. I had gotten death threats before, but this one was....I don't know, different. I could sense her anger. Her hatred. I felt so helpless against whatever she had planned for me. Who knew what could happen.
***I ran the rest of the way home. When I went into the house, I could tell my mom knew what happened. I sat on her lap and cried. I remember saying Why can't I be normal?! multiple times. It wasn't fair. Why did I have to be cursed with this. ***This is a question I'll NEVER get the answer, too.
***I cried for what seemed like days. I finally managed to stop. I showed my mom the other text I got from Lynn.
*** Lenay, Im not trying to scare you, but I think she has a gift just like yours.
*** NO! You know what happens when 2 gifted people that don't like each other get together! One of them is definite to to wind up dead! I screamed.
*** Stay away from her as much as you can. We can tell she is stronger than you. Keep your disteance. Mom said in a very worried tone.
***I'm going to bed. Night. I said in a terrified voice. with that I went upstairs. I laid my head on my pillow and shut my eyes. Within 5 minutes I was asleep. Whenever you are gifted like me when you have a nightmare, it means your craving. How big your craving is depends on the nightmare you are having. If the nightmare was about getting stalked you had a mild craving. If it was about a murder you had a mid-level craving. If it was about gifted people, getting together, forming a powerful clan, you could use your gift in your sleep. The last one happens to me too much.
