Christopher Plummer Close Friend Pays Tribute
Christopher Plummer, Oscar Winner and ‘Sound of Music’ Star, Dies at 91Christopher Plummer, the Canadian-born Shakespearean actor who starred in films including “The Sound of Music” and “Beginners,” died on Friday morning at his home in Connecticut. He was 91.

“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words,” said Lou Pitt, his longtime friend and manager of 46 years. “He was a national treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”

An imposing theatrical presence with a well-cultivated, resonant voice, that critic John Simon once observed, “in its chamois mode, can polish mirrors,” Plummer was best known for playing Captain von Trapp in the Oscar-winning musical “The Sound of Music.” He also won an Oscar in 2012 for his supporting turn in the film “Beginners,” becoming the oldest actor ever to win the Academy Award for supporting actor.

Plummer had a long and acclaimed career on stage, with two Tony Awards. In films, he was also known for “The Insider,” “12 Monkeys,” “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country” and “A Beautiful Mind,” and he contributed voices for “Up,” “An American Tale” and the “Madeline” TV series.

  • Holiday Tribute to 55th Anniversary - The Sound of Music

    2:40

    February 5, 2021 update-
Christopher Plummer, one of screen and theater's very best performers, passed away earlier today at his home in Connecticut at the age of 91. Mr. Plummer is best known for his co-starring lead role in the Hollywood classic 1965 film, 'The Sound of Music', but he worked in over a hundred films and television roles over the course of a remarkable seventy year career. His career on stage was second to none, and he received countless awards and great recognition for his work including Tony nominations and wins, Emmy nominations and wins, and an Academy Awardr for his role in Beginners in 2012, becoming the oldest actor to win an Oscar.

Born in Toronto, Canada, on December 13, 1929, Mr. Plummer grew up in Montreal, and made an incredible impact in theater on both side of the Atlantic. He was able to gracefully move from theater and stage work to films to television with ease, and was a true legendary performer. He will long be remembered for his work on The Sound of Music, our favorite of his film roles, but his work on the television will long be remembered as well.... the miniseries The Thorn Birds is our personal favorite of his many outstanding roles on television.

Rest in peace Christopher Plummer, and thank you.

We love this clip of Mr. Plummer... our favorite of his inteviews....

    - Television Vanguard staff

We continue with our December Holiday Season tribute to the remarkable and wonderful movie The Sound of Music. It's longevity, and 'end-of-an-era' nostalgic factor in Hollywood (and beyond) has made it a very special movie indeed. And over the years, it has become a holiday season classic on television.

With our Covid-2020 challenges this year, both in real life for all of us, and for the entertainment industry in Hollywood, New York, and beyond, this has been a rough and challenging time indeed for the television industry as well.

Over the years, there have been The Sound of Music tributes and cast reunions every five or so years, but this year, it was near impossible. So, here at Television Vanguard, we wanted to try our best to create a 55th anniversary tribute of The Sound of Music to remind all of us this holiday season of the magic of that movie and it's longevity as a broadcast television staple.

We're paying tribute to the cast and crew of The Sound of Music all this month, and have a nice series of special and interviews with the cast that took place the past decade as they celebrated their 45th and 50th anniversaries of the release of this movie classic back in 1965.

Today, a charming Christopher Plummer interview on the Dick Cavett Show from back in May 1971. We love that haircut !! Mr. Plummer's interview regarding The Sound of Music and acting is very charming and fun to watch... he was clearly at the top of his game during this stage in his career, but has continued to wow audiences over these many decades with wide range of acting roles and choices. Bravo Mr. Plummer !!

    Enjoy !

This video clip is presented here on YouTube for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.
