     The nuclear power plant accident triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake has drawn new attention to renewable energy. According to a study by the Ministry of the Environment, among the various types of renewable energy, wind power has the highest introduction potential by far with an installed capacity of 1.9 billion kW. However, introduction would require legal acts, supporting projects, and technological innovation. At Kyushu University, a large-scale demonstration facility for a wind power system called the wind-lens turbine was completed at the Ito Campus. While providing power to the campus, tests to increase the scale of the system will be conducted. For the next stage, Professor Yuji Ohya, one of the developers of this system, plans to build an offshore wind farm in Hakata Bay to conduct field tests, and also has a concept to establish a Multi-source offshore energy farm on the Genkai Sea in the future.

Why did such a significant depletion of the ozone layer occur where it was previously deemed unlikely? What kind of impact did this have on Japan? What is going to happen with the Arctic ozone hole? Dr. Hideaki Nakajima of the National Institute for Environmental Studies has been monitoring ozone over the North and South poles in collaboration with environmental scientists from around the world, answers these questions.

    Transcription: We developed this small wind power generator in collaboration with the Meiji university. This generator is a clean energy source which has no CO2 emissions, and is very quiet. It produces less noise than the propeller type. This generator is surrounded by the tube, so it is safer. Our design is also good form. This has been set up during Yokohama Expo. It is used for generating electricity for LED light. As this type is 80cm diameter, we are also currently developing 2m diameter type.

    The first phase is complete of a plan to build the world's largest offshore wind farm near the Fukushima nuclear plant that was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

    The first turbine has been delivered to the area and the facility is due to become operational in October.

    It is part of plans by Fukushima Prefecture to ditch nuclear energy and move towards total reliance on renewable sources over the next 25 years.

    By 2020 scores of giant turbines 200 metres high should produce twice as much power as the world's current biggest offshore windfarm at Greater Gabbard off the UK's Suffolk coast.

    First and foremost, we want to make this a symbol of Fukushima's recovery. Secondly, this floating wind farm concept is the ace up our sleeves for the next stage of renewable energy development, said Keisuke Murakami, Head of New and Renewable Energy at the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry.

    There have been concerns about radioactive water leaking into the sea from Fukushima, and official accounts have given conflicting evidence over whether fish are safe to eat.

    The disaster all but shut down Japan's nuclear industry, forcing the country to rely heavily on imported gas.

    Made some replacement wings for my vertical axis wind turbine with some left over flashing. The wing is a little too wide which means it'll turn somewhat slower than it should. This design with the rotor on top keeps the rain and snow off the stator and the magnet rotors. Even with the polyurethane, the wood has aged considerably. The upside is every part of the wind turbine is easy to replaced. It outputs a few watts only and can charge a small 12 volt battery.
