  • Animated Maps: Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 from January 22 to July 27

    1:19

The COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder of the porousness of political boundaries in our interconnected world. On January 21, 2020, less than a month after the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, the United States recorded its first positive case of the novel coronavirus. The number of confirmed global cases was still below 600. The virus was confined to seven countries.

In the intervening weeks, the virus has spread to every corner of the world. The global case count has climbed past 16.4 million, with over 25 percent located in the U.S.

Coronavirus Live Map and realtime counter - Latest worldwide COVID-19 stats and figures.

This is an effort to provide live coronavirus related information regarding the Coronavirus pandemic and growing numbers worldwide.
Join us in discussing the Coronavirus pandemic live realtime and how the worldwide figures compare and what can we do together to see through this.

    1. Overview: -
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

    2. Coronavirus symptoms and signs:-
Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

    3. Coronavirus prevention and treatment: -
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your face.

    4. Coronavirus - How does coronavirus spread?
The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).

    5. Coronavirus - Treatment, and Prevention
At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments. WHO will continue to provide updated information as soon as clinical findings become available

  • New time-lapse video shows spread of coronavirus across Melbourne

    35

This time-lapse video shows daily active cases by LGA in Greater Melbourne – and reveals fascinating new insight into the spread of coronavirus in the region from June – August 2020. It was generated using Esri technology – the same mapping and data analysis software that is being used in the Johns Hopkins University and World Health Organisation COVID-19 dashboards.

During May 2020, cases were concentrated in the Melbourne City centre, around Melbourne, Hume and Brimbank LGAs, with the number of daily active cases remaining below 20 in all LGAs.

During June 2020 cases began spreading north and west, with increasing numbers in LGAs such as Wyndham. Active daily cases remained below 20 in each LGA until around 20 June 2020.

From 20 June 2020, active daily cases increased, firstly in Melbourne, then in surrounding LGAs of Mooney Valley, Brimbank, Melton and Hume.
In early July 2020, Hume had 82 active daily cases, while Brimbank, Mooney Valley and Moreland had around 40 active cases.

The virus then spread further north and west, with a sharp increase in active cases recorded in Whittlesea, and a growing number of cases in Mitchell, Greater Geelong and Colac Otway.

Throughout July the active daily cases significantly increased across Hume, Wyndham, Mooney Valley, Melbourne and Brimbank.
By late July 2020, the virus spread further east, with sharp increases in cases in Yarra Ranges (108 cases), Greater Dandenong (156 cases) and Casey (243 cases).

On 31 July 2020, there were 6 LGA's with more than 300 active daily cases, including Wyndham (671 active cases), Brimbank, Hume, Whittlesea, Melton and Moreland. Cases also continued to increase in the west in Colac Otway (78 cases) and new cases were identified in the western parts of Victoria.

  • Mapping the Coronavirus Outbreak Across the World

    1:10

An outbreak of a pneumonia-like illness that started in the Chinese city of Wuhan has put health authorities on high alert around the world. It’s led cities to be cordoned off, caused airlines to cancel flights to and from China and has disrupted global supply chains.

The new coronavirus—named 2019-nCoV—is thought to have originated in the food market of the central China metropolis and has since infected more than 8,000 people. Deaths and cases are likely to rise until the outbreak is contained.

China first reported the outbreak on Dec. 30. Most of the deaths have been in Hubei province, where Wuhan is the capital. Chinese authorities have restricted some travel to try and stop the illness since Jan. 23 and China’s financial markets will remain closed until Monday, Feb. 3 after authorities extended the Lunar New Year holiday break by three days.

While Ebola kills half the people who get it and SARS killed 10%, the new coronavirus’ fatality rate appears to only be about 2%. Experts are worried that the virus’s mild symptoms will cause those who carry it to unsuspectingly transmit it too far and fast. A 10-year old boy was diagnosed with the coronavirus despite showing no symptoms.

In Wuhan, public transportation and ride-hailing services have been suspended, trains and flights from the city have been stopped and people have been told to leave only for essential reasons. Similar travel restrictions were announced in at least 16 other Chinese cities, impacting more than 48 million people.

  • The International Team Mapping the Real-Time Spread of Coronavirus

    3:16

Think of it like Wikipedia, but an open database — curated by volunteers — that instead tracks and maps the real-time spread of COVID-19 around the world.

Since the onset of what has become the COVID-19 pandemic, an international team of over 20 researchers has been aggregating information and developing publicly available datasets to help people study the outbreak as it evolves.

Many of the researchers part of the Open COVID-19 Data Curation Group first connected in 2015 while working on a similar project during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. But the scale of COVID-19 has already made this latest effort a much larger task.

“We didn’t necessarily anticipate in early January that this was going to become a pandemic,” says Samuel Scarpino, an assistant professor at Northeastern University’s Network Science Institute, who is a member of the collaboration. “It really is being operated now like the large scale project it has become”

The goals of the project are to make this raw data open to the public to inform how this outbreak began, give a real-time look at how the situation is changing, how it is unfolding both locally and globally and what is working to stem the spread.

The information is being widely used by an array of individuals and organizations including the CDC, European CDC, and WHO.

The project is collaboratively led by Moritz Kramer of the University of Oxford, and David Pigott of the University of Washington in Seattle.
