  • Croatias Secret Animal Paradise | Free Documentary

    50:49

Every year in the middle of Croatia, like clockwork, nature repeats itself: after the annual snowmelt, a huge flood wave spills out of the Alps toward Zagreb and Belgrade. This leads to an increase in the River Sava's water levels of some ten meters. The contents of more than ten billion bathtubs floods an area the size of Lake Constance, often for months on end, yet the Croatian and Serbian capitals are spared a flood disaster. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the Sava is able to flow unhindered. The annual floods create a natural retention reservoir for flood control: bordering the Sava is a natural paradise, exceptional in Central Europe. In the species-rich, alluvial flood plains of the last major meadow landscape of the continent, enormous predatory fish like the catfish lie in wait for prey. Fish catch birds. Birds catch fish. Horses bath in the waters. A riotous paradise with an abundant and diverse animal life. A rare view that shows what natural floodplains mean, when nature takes precedence over profit.

Watch The Baltics: Untouched Animal Paradise:

This documentary presents the natural beauty of the shifting sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, the romantic beaches of the Latvian Baltic Sea and the island worlds of Estonia. Time and again, this deserted and almost untouched nature fascinates. In the winter, ringed seals give birth to their young on the pack ice. In the spring, Konik wild horse stallions fight fierce battles amongst themselves, while colourful European rollers fly through the dune forests. Lynxes wander through the coastal forests and in the orchid meadows turncoats and hoopoes find more than enough food. On the islands around Saaremaa in Estonia, grey seals hunt for fish. They share the archipelago with Europe’s largest tern, the Caspian tern.

  • The Swiss Alps: Wild Animal Paradise | Free Documentary Nature

    51:25

Gentle, green meadows, rugged rock faces, mysterious lakes, dense forests, tall mountains, low-lying river deltas, quietly meandering mountain streams and smack dab in the middle, a unique fauna - THIS is Switzerland! We trace the elementary power of nature and present animals and plants in landscapes that have hardly ever been touched by mankind. Switzerland is an alpine country, but it is also Europe's surge tank. Rivers such as the Rhine and the Rhone have their sources here. Glaciers, crevasses, icy cold caves and the underwater dome of the Verzasca are the unusual settings we chose for this film. We meet with rare, selected animal species and present their behavioural patterns, such as the Swiss or Arven jay, the lynx and albino catfish. Cold, wind, snow and extreme locations demand adaptation that make us marvel.

  • Croatias beautiful landscapes - The Sava floodplains

    52:01

Natural river landscapes have almost completely disappeared in Europe: The major rivers have almost all been transformed into channelled waterways. It is extremely rare to find a union comprising of a river, flooding area and cultivated land, as is the case with the huge Save floodplains of Croatia, where meadows and pastures of around 100.000 hectares have survived the destruction other European river valleys have faced. Here there is a landscape, in which mankind has always lived and secured a living, side by side with water. Flooding is a natural phenomenon in Lonjsko Polie, which determines life and provides a unique diversity of species.

Costa Rica is home to a vibrant, extremely rich animal and plant life. While the country has only about 0.03% of the world's landmass, it contains 5% of the world's biodiversity. 25% of Costa Rica is protected - in national parks and wildlife reserves, which amounts to the largest percentage of protected land in the world. Over the relatively short period of 32 years, Costa Rica has successfully managed to reduce deforestation from some of the world’s highest rates in the world to almost zero by 2005

Wild Germany: The Mecklenburg Lake Plateau | Free Nature Documentary

At 117 square kilometres(45 sq mi), the Müritz is the second largest lake in Germany (after Lake Constance) and the largest lake located entirely within German territory. But it is far from being the only one in the north east of the country.

The Mecklenburg Lake District, between Waren and Feldberg, contains around 2000 lakes alone. Thanks to the Müritz National Park the species diversity is particularly high in the region: half of the German crane population breeds in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; the osprey is typical of the Müritz area, the lively Eurasian otter hunts here and the endangered red milan circles the skies above.

Fred Bollmann, the former ranger and voluntary nature conservationist is actively involved in the preservation of ‘his’ wildlife world. Filming for this production took two years. The outcome is a unique portrait of this stunning region.

The Baltics: Untouched Animal Paradise | Free Wildlife Documentary

Watch The Baltic Coast: Wild Animal Paradise:

The wide, often untouched wilderness of the Baltic hinterland is home to many animals. More than 350 brown bears live in the primeval forests of Alutaguse. In the spring, the Soomaa National Park transforms into a huge lake. Europe's widest waterfall is located in Latvia. In the beginning of May, vimba bream follow the course of the River Venta. The hardly 50-centimetre-long fish have to overcome a 400-metre-long rock barrier in order to reach their spawning grounds.
The Baltics are rich in superlatives: a fifth of the world's spotted eagle stocks breed here. One of the largest courtship arenas for snipes is located here in the floodplains of Latvia. More than 1000 wolves go on the hunt in Latvia's forests. Lithuania is the land of storks - with over 13.000 pairs, no other region in the Baltic States has more white storks.

  • The Lüneburg Heath: Germanys Manmade Animal Paradise | Free Documentary Nature

    44:28

Forests and fields, moors and heathland, shepherds and sheep - these are the symbols of an ostensibly unspoilt landscape that has inspired poets and painters alike for centuries.
The secret of the almost 500 km² nature reserve Naturpark Südheide lies in its diversity: the origins of its soil, geology and topography can be traced back to the ice age. But the region between Hamburg and Hannover is anything but unspoilt.
For centuries, it was synonymous with heathland farmers and formed as a North German cultivated landscape. This documentary tells of an almost unknown region, which has been strongly influenced by mankind for centuries, yet still remains diverse in its nature.

Nature filmmaker Günter Goldmann presents the Lüneburg Heath to us with impressive behavioural observations of quarrelling black grouse, badgers in their subterranean burrows, the clashing of young wild boar and crane fledglings, who seek protection in the warm plumage of their parents. Aerial views present the region from a lofty perspective, while extreme HD slow motion images of black grouse, wild boar and roe deer provide insights into the world of the animal inhabitants in the heart of Lower Saxony.

Japan's Secret Water garden - David Attenborough [National Geographic Documentary 2020 HD]
Imagine a realm where the seasons' rhythms rule - where centuries of agriculture and fishing have re-shaped the land, yet where people and nature remain in harmony. Sangoro Tanaka lives in just such a paradise. At 83, he's a guardian of one of Japan's secret water gardens. Here - over a thousand years - towns and villages have developed a unique system to make springs and water part of their homes. From inside these homes, the streams pour into Japan's largest freshwater lake, Lake Biwa - an area 5 times the size of Paris - near the ancient capital of Kyoto. This is a habitat so precious the Japanese have a special word for it: Satoyama - villages where mountains give way to plains. They are exceptional environments essential to both the people who maintain them and to the wildlife that now share them.

  • Norway - The land of fjords

    50:51

This film shows Norway at its best. Only if the weather was fine, we switched the record button of our camera. The result is a touching documentary about this breathtaking country.

The film shows primeval landscapes, fjords, glaciers, culture and animals in the typical clear, dust free lights of the northern hemisphere. The warm Gulf Stream creates a mild climate also above the arctic circle. So agriculture and live-stock breeding is possible where one expects strong winters and cold summers.

At some of the slopes of the fjords even strawberries, cherries and apples grow. Only the hinterland in the far north is covered in deep snow during the winter until Easter. But the Sami and the reindeers are pretty well adapted to these conditions.

  • Majestic Bears of Alaska & British Columbia | Free Documentary Nature

    51:39

Our film journey begins in Alaska's west. We are hoping to find glacier bears in the glacial regions of the Katmai National Park on the Douglas River. At the end of July, brown bears have now arrived to fish for salmon. In the surrounding forests, grizzlies look for berries and fresh, green twigs. The Katmai is Alaska's most volcanic area, and with 15 active volcanoes it is a veritable powder keg, surrounded by glaciers. In the Hook glacier region moose and lynx accompany us. Bald eagles have arrived at the glacial boundary and begin to tear apart their freshly caught prey. At last, we catch sight of a glacier bear. Hungry, he has left the ice region and has been forced down here in search of food, which he satisfies extensively with fresh shoots and berries.
Continuing our film trip, we head for Prince Royal Island in British Columbia. En route, we meet with black bears on their way with their young to fish for salmon. The mother bears have to remain alert to protect their young, as we have spotted some New World porcupines too.
Then, out of the blue, directly in front of us: the Kermode, or spirit bear. He shows no signs of timidity and is only interested in one thing: salmon. Then, a further Kermode appears, enjoying his cranberry dessert, allowing us to approach him, almost too close for comfort. But a black bear arrives on the scene and claims the cranberry bush for itself. After a brief confrontation, the Kermode opts to leave, preferring to focus on salmon fishing. Fascinating footage of this rare species of animal.

The Golden Eagle - Master of the Sky | Wildlife Documentary

    Watch 'Germany's Wild Birds' here:

When the golden eagle watches for prey while gliding over its hunting ground, hardly flapping its wings, snow and black grouse, groundhogs, hares and other animals had better watch out. Even the quick kestrel can't escape when the golden eagle has it in its sights. The fox and the common raven may be more intelligent than the golden eagle, but if they aren't careful they might also end up as a meal for the young eagles in the eyrie. The golden eagle is an extremely crafty hunter: optimally exploiting all cover, it glides close to the ground over knolls and low hills along hillsides and attempts to surprise its prey from a short distance. When it spies prey, it swoops down onto it in a nosedive. The eagle has already killed the surprised prey before it even realises what is happening to it.

This documentary gives an intimate portrait of this large bird of prey and tracks the birth and coming of age of two Golden Eagle chicks in the High Tatra Mountains, from the hatching of the eggs, until the moment when the young birds leave the nest. Tragic and funny moments make this movie an entertaining trip into the treetops of the European forests.

  • Wildlife Laws: Only the Fastest Will Survive | Free Documentary Nature

    50:01

In a land of dangers, plant-eating animals are always at risk, and never more so than at the time of their birth; out on the open they are vulnerable and there are few places to hide. But luckily some are born to run…
Out on the African plains life can get off to a shaky start. Millions of baby wildebeests, zebras and antelopes are born at the same time. All of them must struggle to their feet in minutes. They must master their legs and be ready to run with the herd. If they don't they will be picked off by predators like lions, cheetahs, or crocodiles.
Whatever their role in life, little ones will face one challenge after another, whether it's trying to keep up with the herd during migration, getting stuck in the mud during a drought, being separated from its mother, panicking in bad weather, or even coming face to face with a predator.
The point will come in every young animal's life when the skills it learned will be put to good use. One of the most powerful wake-up calls to the harsh reality of nature comes to a young wildebeest during its migration. A dramatic river crossing, where there are more than just fast currents and steep banks to deal with - a river teaming with crocodiles. One by one his herd mates are picked off by the great reptiles, but when his time comes he proves he was born to run!

  • Amazing nature: Run to survive

Iceland - Home of Europe's Strongest Horses | Animal Documentary

Watch 'A Trip from Canada to Norway: The wild North' here:

Iceland, the island of longing in the North. The biggest volcanic island in the world is known for its grandiose landscape, for its geysers and glaciers. But it is even more famous for its horses. Icelandic horses are considered the liveliest horses in the whole of Europe with the greatest stamina. They tölt over mossy banks and lava rock unfazed by rivers, glaciers and scree slopes.
In Nordic mythology the steed are never far behind the warriors. Where would Siefgried be without his horse Grani, or Odin without Sleipnir. Even the sun wouldn’t rise or set if “awake early” and “very quick” weren’t pulling their chariot. From the beginning of colonisation, the Icelanders had the kind of close relationship with their horses usually only seen among the horse-riding peoples of Central Asia. And something of this love for horses still exists today.

Gourmets all over the world are in love with these famous crustaceans: lobsters! For marine biologists lobsters are similarly fascinating: as research objects. We are on their trail in Cape Breton, an island in the northern Atlantic and part of the Canadian province Nova Scotia, where one of the largest populations of lobsters has its home.

Wildlife Takeover: How Animals Reclaimed Chernobyl | Wildlife Documentary

Where humans move out, wildlife moves in…
What would happen if the world were suddenly without people – if humans vanished off the face of the earth? How would nature react - and how swiftly?

On the edge of Europe, a deserted location reveals the surprising answer. An abandoned village can change in a very short time into a sanctuary for plants, birds and animals. Shy and rare species, some thought to be on the brink of extinction are found in robust good health.

This is Chernobyl, deserted by people after the worst nuclear disaster in history and now reclaimed by a remarkable collection of wildlife and the descendents of pets that were left in the city when the people went away.
This film unmasks the surprising faces of the new inhabitants. In houses where people once lived and laughed, unexpected wildlife is making itself at home. The adventures of a likeable cast of non-human characters give viewers a rare glimpse into an alternative world. Here wild animals face challenges in an environment totally outside their experience, while once-domestic species must rediscover their wild natures within.

Where is this place of abandonment and sanctuary? The location is well known and draws a cloud of uncertainty over the future for these animal characters.

  • Bizarre animal appearances

    50:01

Animals shock us with the most bizarre appearances - some even look like they've been dressing up. But the weird and wonderful shapes and colours of nature are vital to the animals' lives. Sometimes they're disguised to help blend in, other times they are designed to stand out and show off. But whether it's a monkey in make-up or a salamander's toxic stripes, the weird and wonderful outfits enable the creature to thrive.
The obvious place to start exploring animal outfits is the colourful parrots. The birds dazzling hues are not all caused by pigment, but more a clever reflection of the light. Bright, vibrant plumage is very attractive to a bird of the opposite sex - it demonstrates that the wearer is in good health, but surprisingly the main function of their bold markings is camouflage.
There is an alternative to blending in. Some animals use colourful costumes to make themselves stand out. In the case of bold and bright tree frogs and salamanders, it's to warn would be attackers of toxins in their skins.
Intimidation can also be used in the mating game, when a male wants to make himself bigger and more intimidating to his competitors. Many birds flaunt elaborate plumage to make themselves look more dramatic. The king of courting costume though is the peacock. With a two metre tail span, covered in colourful, eyelike markings, he's hard to ignore. But while some creature costumes are easy to explain, others remain a mystery.
Animals dressing up might seem colourful to us, but perhaps it's not so strange - there is no species that enjoys putting on a costume as much as we do!

EUROPE's Wild Islands - National Geographic Documentary

Deep in the Atlantic new islands are forming, very slowly, alongside the ancient peaks of the Azores. Some of these emerging islands now reach to just below the surface. But how did the jungle find its way on to the inhospitable rocks, long before the arrival of humans? The answer is birds. Species from Europe and America arrived here carrying seeds. They are in some ways the founders of the islands. And the most common creatures on the Azores are spiders! Around them, following the currents, the giants of the sea congregate to enjoy the feast of microscopic plankton these islands serve them.

  • Eagles: The Kings of the Sky | Free Documentary Nature

Eagles: The Kings of the Sky | Free Wildlife Documentary

Watch: The Golden Eagle: King of the Mountains here:

Whether in Alaska or in the Dolomites, eagles are generally seen as Kings of the skies. This film devotes itself on the one hand to the bald eagle, the heraldic bird of the United States, and on the other, the Golden Eagle, Europe's largest predatory bird. Many bald eagles live in the Chilkoot State Park in Alaska's south. In fact, more than 400 pairs reside there for the entire year. With a wingspan of some 2.5 metres, they are amongst the largest of their species. The offspring have to leave the eyrie by September at the latest, as then, winter sets in.

On clear, starry nights, one can experience the Northern Lights. There are certain places where especially many eagles group. 3000 to 4500 of them. Because, beneath the Chilkat ice blanket, chum salmon feel at home. The reason for this is the volcanic activity of the surrounding areas. Hot sources feed the different tributaries of the Chilkat. It is the fourth and final salmon migration of the year - nowhere else does this take place so late in the year.

This combination of ice-free water and spawning fish facilitates the survival of many young eagles through their first winter. In the Dolomites, we observe a Golden Eagle couple and their offspring. The strategy of hunter and hunted is impressively documented. For the very first time we experience a groundhog's fight for survival, attempting to flee the eagles' eyrie at a height of 2000 meters, despite the fact this means confrontation with the eagle's offspring. Golden Eagles have virtually conquered the entire northern hemisphere. But the future hunting grounds of the young eagles belongs to the most beautiful: the Dolomites - as majestic as the Kings of the skies.

Northern Woods - A Tribute to the Ancient Forests of the North | Nature Documentary

Watch 'Alpine Rivers: The Cradle of Life' here:

Northern Woods is a homage and a cultural-historical consideration at the same time. The film portrays the German/Northern European forest and shows its development from primeval to intensively managed forest. It was once inhabited by wild animals such as wolves, bears, eagles, deer and musk ox. Its cultivation was carried out by Celts and Teutons. Today the forest is often a victim of environmental degradation and overexploitation.

  • The Underwater Wonderland of Australia | Free Documentary Nature

The Underwater Wonderland of Australia | Ocean Documentary

Australia stands for tourism icons like the Ayers Rock, the Pinnacles and the Kakadu National Park. Crocodiles, Koalas and Kangaroos are possibly the most popular animals of the world. Venomous snakes, and spiders are in focus of the media as well as the famous great Barrier Reef and the Ningaloo Reef - the reef of the whale sharks. This under-water documentary concentrates on the two big coral reefs. The Australian Paul Waghorn is one of the underwater specialists of the Mountain Pictures team. He possibly spends more hours underwater than on land. He describes the biodiversity off the two reefs at the east and west coast of Australia as a symphony of the ocean. It teaches us to understand not only the animals but also our own humans variety of species as a miracle. Nature does not know man made rules and religions and it is anything but a happy wonderland. The species have developed her own methods of surviving. Pauls cinematic concert is asking the spectator to think about wrong or right, good and bad, stupidity and cleverness in the world of plants and creatures of the ocean.

  • From Ecuador to Galápagos

    44:46

Ecuador is worth a journey for just more than one reason. For example there would be the history of the Inca wall Ingapirca or the shamanism which is still prevalent. But Hans and his team have also been anxious of course to see and to feel the traces of the former colonialists from Spain everywhere in the country.

Ecuador lies on the middle of the earth, the equator. This fact is high-lighted with a huge globe, which is a main target for tourists. However, Ecuador is particularly interesting for nature-lovers. Large parts of the west of the country is covered with Amazon rainforest. For humans the jungle is inhospitable but for the animals it is an ideal place to live. The camera crew has taken some hardships to be able to observe some animals at close range.

From the alligator to the boa and from the butterfly to the squirrel monkey, such cute animals as well as dangerous predators are represented in this documentary. Everything is to discover on narrow space in Ecuador, from a magic coastal landscape up to dangerous time bombs of mother nature, the volcanoes. Highlight of the film is the visit of the Galapagos islands far off shore the pacific coast. Charles Darwin observed the turtles and the Galápagos marine iguana here. But primarily he concentrated on the finches, however. They were of greatest importance for the proof of his theory of evolution.

  • Croatia - The pearl at the Mediterranean

    45:08

The second part of the journey from Croatia goes from the island of Vis to Dubrovnik. At the time of communist Yugoslavia, but also long before, Vis was restricted due to its excellent strategic position. Also Tito's partisan army had its headquarters in a cave in Mount Hum. The waters around Vis count to the most fishy of the Adriatic. Far above its regional boundaries, however, Vis is neither known for its wine nor for the rich fish rich in the sea.

The Blue Grotto of Bisevo is the main reason for many tourists coming from Split or from the surrounding islands. Makarska is the most famous tourist resort on the Croatian Riviera. After the war in Croatia in the 1990s, the city was modernized with great effort. The historic old town experienced an addition to new hotels, restaurants and shops. With an area of 396 square kilometers, Brac is the third largest island of the Adriatic and the largest of Croatia.

The goldene Horn, a sandhorn about 300 m long, is the tourist landmark. However, Brac is known worldwide, especially among the handworkers. The white house in Washington / USA was built from the snow-white Bracer limestone. Another important place is the island of Korcula. The parents of Marco Polo, the most important seafarer of European history, lived here. Whether her famous son was born here, is not handed down. Highlight of this part of the trip to Croatia is the visit of the city of Dubrovnik, the city of churches and monasteries.

  • Croatia - Our beautiful homeland

    45:21

A rich culture and the breathtaking landscapes of the Croatian Mediterranean. This has made Croatia one of the most popular holiday regions of Europe, already at times of the United Yugoslavia. In two episodes Hans Jöchler and his team travel the land of the countless islands and historically meaningful places on the mainland. The film shows impressive landscapes on the mainland and the islands. However it delivers an informative insight into the busy history of a multiethnic nation, which became a full member of the European Union in 2014.

This first of two episodes presents well known destinations like Rovinji. Here many traces of the Venetians are to be found which once were rulers of the country. Furthermore the city of Pula and some of the 1242 islands of Croatia stand on the itinerary, such as Cres or Pag. One of the highlights is the visit of the oldest national park of Europe, Paklenica with its impressive gorges and black pine wood. A visit of the former capitol city of Dalmatia, Zadar stands before the boat trip to the Kornati.

On Dugi Otok the team puts the heads and the camera under water briefly, to be astonished about the variety of ocean coral species and molluscs at the up to 90 meters deep steep slopes. Finally the team heads on for Riva, one of the most popular tourist destinations of Croatia. This film gives the audience an impression of a country which suffers often from just being seen as a destination for mass tourism. But hardly many people know about its high cultural status proved for example by old sacred buildings or the Artworks and crafts.

  • Rivers of Croatia, documentary film

    49:17

Maybe no other European country has such diverse, yet so preserved rivers as Croatia. Adriatic coast is world-known, with crystal clear sea, rocky coastline with ancient stone towns like Dubrovnik…The sea is however not the only richness of Croatia. Its rivers are surely one of the most important values. From murky and slow lowland rivers that flood huge floodplains; through short and fast mountainous rivers that flush on rapids; then rivers in Karlovac region with travertine (tufa) waterfalls and slow, almost marshy parts with lush vegetation; quiet rivers in karst polje that are lost in the dark underground only to spring at other place; until big Adriatic rivers in deep barren canyons with waterfalls, that meet the sea in narrow estuaries like Zrmanja or wide delta-like Neretva. Since they are diverse and untouched they are oases of life containing preserved biotopes with rare and endangered species on the European level. Because of their particularity, many endemic species live in them; among fish species in karst rivers around 15 are endemic.

  • The Greatest Animal Migration | Free Documentary Nature

    43:11

Millions of these gnus join forces annually to participate in one huge migration - always with luscious grass in their sights. Roaring, snorting, bucking, continuously reproductive en route, they head west - across the Serengeti from Tanzania to Kenya and back. With a large variety of animals in their wake - friend and foe: zebra families that resemble pale flotsam in a dark ocean amidst the gnu herds; or lions, and hyaenas in hope of their next victims. Along their way, they encounter hippopotami and crocodiles - and all of them embroiled in the cycle of devour and be devoured. The filmmakers follow the artiodactyls, armed with their cameras and lay in wait on the so-called birthing meadow. There, in the world's largest maternity room, 250.000 calves will be born within the next three weeks. The journey from there to the pasture regions of Kenya is especially dangerous for young animals - and here the film also illustrates nature's harshness. And then there is the revenge of the gnus, something that Vita and Rolf Köster have become acquainted with. The two filmmakers gained unusual access to the world's most famous game reserve whilst shooting their film in search of the even-toed animals.

In Bohemia, at the very heart of Europe, south of the Golden City of Prague and guarded by medieval castles, lies a hidden mosaic of lakes and gently flowing rivers, of misty forests and mysterious peat bogs. This important wetland, shaped both by nature and centuries of influence by man, is a magnet for huge flocks of birds and home to an amazing diversity of plant and animal life. In spring there is an explosion of life as the trees are weighed down with nests of cormorants, egrets, herons and storks. With the arrival of winter the landscape becomes silent and desolate. Otters are hunting fish under the ice of frozen lakes while White-tailed Eagles soar over gaps in the ice, targeting fish and birds. Since his early childhood wildlife cinematographer Jiri Petr has spent much of his time in this wildlife paradise. Together with him, we will explore this remarkable habitat and observe the changing faces of nature during the course of one year that inspired many artists and writers alike.
