World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys Tajikistan (2012)

Deadliest Roads - Siberia's Lake Baika:

The land locked nation of Tajikistan is the poorest country in central Asia. The mountainous landscape is unforgiving and temperatures extreme. Here desperate truck drivers can wait for days to get assigned a load to transport across the treacherous terrain. Working in old and battered trucks on bone-shaking routes, dodging falling rocks and landslides, and being forced to wake up every two hours during the night to start their engines so they don’t freeze up and leave them stranded; these men are severely tested. They do it all for the love of their families who wait for weeks at a time, hoping that their husbands and fathers will return safe. A look at both sides of the lives of Tajik long distance drivers.

From lorry drivers in high altitude, approaching summits and braving precipices, to countryside doctors forced to walk for hours, covering more than 5000 metres, to visit patients, to death-deceiving Gauchos competing in corral arena rodeos, they all show a quiet courage and an impenetrable resourcefulness. We will never forget Pablo the farmer, who crosses the rainy-season lagoons on his Mad Max lorry, half bus half tractor, just to deliver milk to his farm.

  • Deadliest Roads | The Himalayas | Documentary

    44:54

The Leh–Manali Highway is a 429 km (267 mi) long highway in northernmost India connecting Leh, the capital of the union territory of Ladakh, to Manali in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It connects the Manali Solang valley to the Lahaul and Spiti valleys in Himachal Pradesh and the Zanskar valley in Ladakh. It is open for only about five months in a year, from mid-May or June (when the snow is cleared from the highway) to October, when snowfall again blocks the high passes on the highway. However, the Lahaul valley will now remain connected to Manali for most part of the year through Atal tunnel.

The Leh–Manali Highway has been designed, built and being maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) of the Indian army. It supports the heaviest army vehicles.
The average elevation of Leh-Manali highway is more than 4,000 m (13,000 feet)[1] and its highest elevation is 5,328 m (17,480 ft) at the Taglang La mountain pass. It is flanked by mountain ranges on both sides, featuring stunning sand and rock natural formations.

The road between Leh-Manali in Ladakh.
The highway crosses many small streams of ice-cold water from snow-capped mountains and glacial melts without a bridge and it requires driving skill to negotiate fast-flowing streams. The landscape changes immediately after getting past the Atal tunnel and the greenery starts receding upon entering the Chandra river valley in the Lahaul region that lies in the rain-shadow. After crossing Darcha, the greenery completely disappears and the mountain slopes on the leeward side become brown and arid. However, the mountain peaks are covered in snow and shine brightly in the sun.
The Leh-Manali highway is generally two lanes wide (one lane in each direction) without a road divider, but has only one or one and a half lanes at some stretches. It has over a dozen Bailey bridges and many of them are now being upgraded to two-lane steel bridges.. The highway has many damaged stretches and under-maintained portions, where even a little rainfall can trigger dangerous landslides. The road quality is poor from Zingzingbar to Pang and high speed can cause discomfort.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Afghanistan in 2016

    Deadliest Roads - Myanmar:

Situated in the extreme north-west of Afghanistan, the Wakhan corridor is bordered by the Hindou Kouch mountains and peaks at almost 5000 metres high.

This forgotten region of Afghanistan is the only one to have been spared by the war that has raged through the country for years. No soldier, neither American nor from the Taliban, has ever entered it. Its inhabitants live as if in the middle ages, without water or electricity, and make a living by bartering. The only road that cuts through the corridor is almost inaccessible, crossing the mountainside, often buried by metres of snow. A handful of adventurers, travelling in rickety lorries, have dared to brave the isolated corridor, battling against the extreme elements. And, of course, the odd sheep and yak…

    Deadliest Roads - Suriname:

The bravest drivers in Cameroon are named the “Clandos”; the name comes from the word clandestine or illegal. They drive illegal taxis and are the only ones who are brave enough to navigate the country’s dangerous road networks, some of the worst on the African continent. Only 2% of the roads have been asphalted. All of the country’s inhabitants rely on the Clandos’ taxi services, they have no other choice. The country has no railway and taking airplanes is both too expensive and too dangerous.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Liberia in 2012

Torrential rain, flooded villages, crossings turned into rivers, overflowing sewage systems, people drowning in their own homes; the rainy season in Liberia is one of the most destructive in the world. For pennies, Fofana battles the conditions to take passengers through the jungles that occupy much of the country. His brave but hellish exploits reveal the country’s plights and desperation. Priests in a baptist church turn Mass into a lucrative tombola, exposing the church to corruption. Children as young as five are breaking stones to sell as gravel for next to nothing, instead of being at school. Workers of a multinational palm oil manufacturer are transported to the work sites in overcrowded animal containers to slave away under the sun. The difficulties of a country ravaged by civil war are exacerbated as transport routes are destroyed by avalanches of water and villages are cut off.

  • Deadliest Journeys - Nepal, precipice of the damned

    53:42

“I’ve never had a worse journey in my life,” says the old man sitting in the rear of the jeep, clinging tightly onto the fittings of the SUV. “What with rock falls, landslides, crashed trucks, snowfall on the high ground… that road is a real nightmare!” The Karnali Highway, in the North West of Nepal is the most dangerous road in the country. It’s 250 kilometres long and links the town of Surkhet, in the valley, to Jumla, altitude 3,000 metres. It sometimes takes five days to make the trip. Hewn out of the rock on the flank of the mountain set in an outstanding natural background, this road, opened barely two years ago, is finally allowing the population of this, the poorest region of Nepal to open up to the rest of the country, to move about and, above all, to bring in supplies of every type. Drivers of trucks, jeeps and even tractors, travellers, shopkeepers who go down to the valley for supplies, public transport, columns of people on foot walking for several days to get to their village… for them the road, despite everything, is the safest and fastest way of getting around this mountainous region. For several weeks, we accompanied all those who, willingly or otherwise, take this “impossible highway”. -

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Bolivia in 2007 (The very first episode of the series)
Criss-crossing the valleys of Bolivia, hundreds of metres above the ground, is a network of makeshift cables. Clinging onto these cables, coca growers whizz across the mountains, transporting their harvest. Should they slip or the aged cables snap, they face certain death. Once they’ve reached the other side of the mountain, the danger doesn’t end. The coca then has to be transported along the ’Camino de la Muerte’, or Highway of Death’. It’s the only route connecting La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital, with the Amazon Basin. And it’s officially the most dangerous road in the world.

  • Deadliest Journeys - Myanmar: No Fear

    51:23

For more than half a century, the country has lived in isolation, cut off from the outside world by a succession of some of the toughest dictatorships on the planet. The Burmese regard their country as a beautiful sleeping girl. Today she opens her eyes a little but wakes him up hard. The country lacks everything, the infrastructure has been neglected for many years. But the Burmese keep smiling. In the North West, in the most mountainous region of the country, getting around is an adventure. The mountains reach 3000 meters in altitude and some roads climb to more than 2000 meters. With his truck, twice his age, Khampi struggles. Despite everything, man faces the roads or rather the tracks, with courage and coolness. Khampi never gets angry, he keeps a smile at all times even when he misses to tip over. The word “fear” seems to have disappeared from his vocabulary. The state of the roads is a serious handicap for the populations, but it has enabled the country to retain its beauty, its authenticity and its traditions. Young Sokna carries on an ancient ritual, the Kiss of Death. Legend has it that by kissing the head of a king cobra three times, the women of the village will quickly become pregnant. In Naypeedaw, the megalomaniacal capital erected by the military junta, highways hold a sad record. One of the least frequented on the planet. The country also holds another record, with the most terrifying train in Asia. It crosses a viaduct more than 100 meters high. Without any security. Barely a few centimeters separate the travelers from the void. Travel to the heart of Burma far from the tourist trails. Réalisateur 1

  • Deadliest Journeys - Bolivia: The Road Of Death

    52:21

There are two worlds in Bolivia. That of the Altiplano, the highlands, perched at an altitude of more than 4000 meters. And that of the Amazon basin, which tops out at a few hundred meters above sea level. Between the two, there is a transition region, made of vertiginous precipices and trails that descend the Andean Cordillera in a few tens of kilometers. . It is the region of the Yungas, a country where the horizontal does not exist. In these valleys winds a road, the only means of communication between La Paz, the administrative capital of the country, perched on the Altiplano, and the riches of the Amazon basin. The Bolivians nicknamed it el camino de la muerte, the road to death. Highest point: the La Cumbre pass, 4700 meters, at the exit of La Paz. 78 kilometers further, we are barely 900 meters. Along this road of the impossible, we follow the story of a community of cocaleros, coca growers clinging to the slopes of the mountain. To carry their loads to the road, they stretched makeshift cables made of simple iron wires across the valley. An infernal zip line, nearly 400 meters long, 200 meters above the ground. We also share the daily life of a vachero, a truck driver who transports cows from the Amazon basin to La Paz, the highest metropolis in the world. 25 hours of journey on the road to death, done without stopping. Because you have to go very quickly: if a cow dies, the driver pays.

  • Deadliest Journeys - China : The dizzy valley of the forgotten

    1:4:19

The Duong valley road is the only means of access between China, Burma and Tibet. A road that is paved over the first thirty kilometres, but which quickly turns into an extremely perilous track. It’s considered the most dangerous road in China. Landslides, difficult passages where it’s impossible for vehicles to pass, mud, tunnels that are too narrow, there’s no respite for drivers. The road demands the highest concentration. The cliffs are vertiginous. The least turn of the wheel can be fatal. And when the threat isn’t coming from below, it may come from the rock walls. On this track, you cannot commit any errors. We take the road aboard an overloaded collective taxi. At the wheel is Tcheng. He’s been driving this road once a week for six years. In the taxi, we find Fong who has to get back to his remote village in the mountains. Together, they will take more than seven hours to cover less than a hundred kilometres. Troubles begin right from the start of the journey. The tunnel is too narrow. The passengers have to get out of the vehicle to widen the walls at the risk of bringing it all down. During this adventure we meet woodcutters, children who sell coal, Tibetan monks and Chinese adventurers seeking their fortunes… This road may be the one that leads to El Dorado, the El Dorado of the lead and tin mines. -

In the country there are more than 40 million motorcycles.

  • Deadliest Journeys - Peru: Vertigo In The Andes

    51:10

From the south to the north of Peru, deep canyons cut through the Andes mountain range. To supply gold mines, cultivate their vines or quite simply return to their villages, men have no other choice but to embark on improbable tracks, cut in the rock. At the end of the road, the big companies always find their place there, baited by the fabulous natural resources of the country, whether it is its basements filled with precious metals or its waters full of fish. But it is rare that all this wealth benefits small hands, those who have to bend in half at the end of the galleries, scrape the earth in the ammonia vapors or risk their lives at the end of a 60 rope. meters high, for a handful of euros ... From the valley of the Marañon river to the Cotahuasi canyon through the Paracas desert, this Route of the Impossible takes the crossroads of a Peru with grandiose landscapes, but where life comes at a high price ...

Since its foundation in 2015, Spanish NGO Open Arms has rescued over 60,000 refugees. But nothing prepared it for the events that unfolded on November 11, 2020.

  • Deadliest Journeys - Congo’s trucks

    48:21

Five times bigger than France, third largest country in Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is, foremost, one of the world’s richest countries in raw materials. There’s cobalt, mainly used in mobile phones and the aeronautics industry, copper, zinc, gold and diamonds in astounding quantities. Our cameras focused on Katanga, a province in the south of the DRC, which has three quarters of the country’s wealth. We accompany Eugene, owner of a truck, laden to the top with goods, that must travel from Lubumbashi, the country’s economic capital, to his native city of Bukama, 400 miles to the north. The journey from Lubumbashi to Bukama takes four days. At the wheel is « the prince of the highway », answering to the name of Domingo, aided by three escorts: Elephant, Bijou and Maroquin. They cling onto the outside of the truck and are the driver’s eyes and ears throughout the journey. We accompanied them for the whole of the trip, a nightmare along almost totally unusable roads, an African remake of the « Wages of Fear » set against a background of organized looting of the country’s wealth by three principal countries: China, India and the USA. -
