  • Frontiers 194: Dick Proenneke - At Home in the Wilderness

    48:32

    By Rhonda McBride, KTVA.

I remember the first time I heard Dick Proenneke’s name, I said, “Dick, what?”
The name Proenneke, pronounced “preh’-neck-key,” sounded so odd.
My colleague Will Mader, our main Frontiers photojournalist, brought it up. He’s a big fan of Proenneke’s.
Will had devoured Proenneke’s journals and watched all his films. He had even made the pilgrimage to Dick’s cabin at Lake Clark National Park and Wilderness Preserve and talked with me about doing a show on efforts to preserve his log house.
Why? Alaska has lots of log cabins. Why this one?
Will convinced me this was an important story to tell.
Since Proenneke’s death in 2003, his fame has continued to grow. But curiously, he’s better known outside of our state than he is here, because his film, Alone is the Wilderness, is often featured in public broadcasting fundraisers across the country.
The more I learned, the more intrigued I became.
Proenneke, at the age of 52, went to Twin Lakes to reinvent himself, after a welding accident almost blinded him.
His mission: to find out if he had what it took to survive in the wilderness. He started by cutting down logs and used them to build a cabin, fashioned completely with hand tools – some that he made himself. Proenneke went on to live in his homemade house for more than 30 years -- and through his journals and films became a famous wilderness advocate.
Will and I began our journey towards this week’s show more than two years ago, with a trip to Twin Lakes, where we had a chance to meet people who knew Dick Proenneke. It turned out to be what I call a Chinese box story, when you open one box, only to find another and another. There were plenty of surprises in those boxes – and we were left with an interesting collection.
Who was the real Dick Proenneke?
First and foremost, he aimed to leave his mark by treading lightly on the land, to have as little impact as possible on the wilderness he called home.
Although the country was remote, he discovered how fragile it was. He often spent his days picking up trash that hunters and pilots left behind.
Another facet of Dick Proenneke: he was a recycler extraordinaire, before the term was even widely used.
He would take discarded gas cans and turn them into cookware. He would salvage parts from airplane wrecks and fashion tools. He also made very user-friendly furniture, shaped to the curves of the body.
Dick Proenneke, we discovered, was many things to many people. That’s why we decided to create a special one-hour version of the show.
Here are some of the highlights:
    • Dick Proenneke's personal frontier: The story of how Dick Proenneke became a wilderness icon.
    • Handmade home: Efforts to restore Dick Proenneke’s cabin at Twin Lakes.
    • Keepers of the legacy, the journals: John Branson, a National Park Service historian based at Lake Clark talks about editing more than 90 pounds of Proenneke notebooks.
    • Keepers of the legacy, the archive: Katie Myers, a curator for the National Park Service shows us the Dick Proenneke collection at the NPS archives in downtown Anchorage.
    • Friends and neighbors: With help from the NPS and the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association, a look at friendships Dick had with his nearest neighbors -- Jay and Bella Hammond and the Alsworth Family.
    • Wilderness princess: Former NPS ranger Patty Brown talks about her friendship with Dick Proenneke, who made her feel like royalty. How she came to hop off a float plane at Twin Lakes, wearing a black evening gown.
    • Friends of Dick Proenneke and Lake Clark National Park: Fred Hirschmann shares his memories of Dick and talks about the need to protect and preserve the Proenneke homestead.

We have many, many people to thank for their help: John Branson and Katie Myers at the National Park Service, the Alsworth's Lake Clark Air, the Hammond family, the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association, Fred Hirschmann and the Friends of Dick Proenneke and Lake Clark National Park, and Bob Swerer Productions.

Perhaps the biggest joy of a project like this is all the friends you meet. We hope this show raises awareness about a great Alaskan, who is not well known in his own state. So here’s our attempt to change that.

    #logcabin #cabin #Alaska
Shawn James visits Dick Proenneke's off grid log cabin at Twin Lakes in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska and spends two nights alone camping on the gravel beach of upper Twin Lake. Bears, moose and Dall sheep abound and he catches and cooks fish on an open fire, including arctic grayling and arctic char, catching and releasing sockeye salmon as well.
Hiking in the mountains of the Alaskan range, he views incredible vistas from the mountain tops and watches as clouds race through the valley, with ever changing weather - rain, sun, wind...
See the inside of Proenneke's log cabin as well as three others, which will be showcased in more detail in the follow up video.

  • DICK PROENNEKE TWIN LAKES

    14:51

    or

Richard Louis Proenneke (1916-2003), known as Dick, has become an icon of wilderness living in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Born in Iowa, he worked as a farmhand and rancher before joining the Navy the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After receiving a medical discharge in 1945 (following a bout of rheumatic fever), he again took up ranching. In 1949, he made his first visit to Alaska at the invitation of a friend. He lived and worked in Alaska off and on for years, making his first visit to Twin Lakes in 1962. By 1967, he had begun work on a cabin there. It was completed in 1968.

His was not the first cabin on Twin Lakes, nor was it the biggest. Proenneke's cabin, though, stands out for its remarkable craftsmanship, which reflects his unshakeable wilderness ethic. The cabin was built using only hand tools, many of which Proenneke himself had fashioned. Throughout the thirty years he lived at the cabin, Proenneke created homemade furniture and implements that reflect his woodworking genius.

I also tell my story of what brought me to the building my cabin and why nature is so special to me. Growing up I was lucking being around outdoors men. Being out in the wild became part of me. About a year ago I would sit around day dreaming about living off grid and building my own log cabin in the woods. watching people like Shawn James My Self Reliance and of course the man Dick Proenneke. seeing others do it gave me hope. So off in the woods I went to build a cabin and live off grid in the wilderness.

    1:31:34

    #logcabin #bushcraft #offgrid #survival
One man leaves the city life behind to build a cheap off grid log cabin and homestead in the Canadian wilderness, including a log home, an outdoor kitchen, an outhouse, a woodshed and a sauna bathhouse. Building mostly with hand tools, Shawn James harvests building materials from the forests north of Toronto, Canada and crafts them into functional tools and shelters using traditional woodworking tools and methods. He practices bushcraft and survival skills every day, including fire starting, tree identification and harvesting, wild edible foraging, fishing, hunting, camping in the summer and winter, travelling by canoe and snowshoe, navigation and water collection and purification.
Continue watching in 2019 as Shawn finishes the sauna, plants a forest garden for fruit and vegetables, builds an underground root cellar, ice house and cheese cave, a timber frame workshop and a remote hunt camp closer to fish and game.

    11:41

This video was filmed on May 04, 2019. Unfortunately i could not upload it until several days later.
Richard Luis Proenneke, born May 04, 1916 and passing April 20, 2003, has been an inspiration to me and countless others. His hard work ethic, focus, skill, and lifestyle has influenced me in much of my daily life. Dick reminds me much of my older relatives, from his skills, actions and approach to life, to his unwaivering dedication to a clean, modest living.
Every year on his birthday I embark on a wilderness journey in remembrance of him and his unique way of life.
There is so much to learn from this man and his accomplishments. A true American woodsman from The Greatest Generation. Happy Birthday Dick.

  • The Man Living in Complete Isolation for 40 Years | Far Out

    10:29

Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores of lake O'Higgins in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He's a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O'Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.

Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.

  • Pioneer Living Alone In The Wilderness | Solar Power Issues, Chores

    14:01

Pioneer living in the heart of Woodland Caribou Provincial Park! 3 days into my stay at the cabin, I'm settling in nicely. Although the temperatures have been chilling to say the least (-38 last night), they've warmed just enough to take care of some of my chores. There is never enough wood to split or water to haul up to the cabin!

In the deep freeze we've encountered, I'm burning through roughly 1.5 mature Jack Pine trees daily and my wood supply is dwindling. So today I've served the chainsaw and selected some trees to be cut over the next few days. I've also ensured 15 gallons of cold, clear drinking and cooking water has been hauled up to the cabin and stored properly.

Most important on the agenda though, is troubleshooting some of the issues I've been having with my solar system. It was designed and installed 3 years ago to provide enough power for winter use and although the batteries are in good shape and the panels are doing their job, the inverter does not seem to be doing it's job. With the generator tuned on and the system plugged in, the system should charge without issue, however I am getting error messages from my read out and the batteries are not taking a charge from the generator. This could be a MASSIVE problem if I let the batteries drain down during the day as they could run the risk of freezing....and that would be a major problem out here not too mention an expensive one! For the last few nights, I've been running a cord inside the cabin to plug in a few lights, not running the cabin electricity at all. With this warming trend though, it'll be much easier to troubleshoot the problem and I'm confident it'll get sorted out!

Never a dull moment up here and there's simply not enough hours in the day!

My husky pup is also doing much better in the warmer conditions. She had some IV's put into her just before we arrived an the vet shaved her in multiples places trying to find a vein. Poor girl, -30 weather does not do well on bare skin. She's loving the warmer temps though!

Thanks again for watching and please let me know thoughts in the comments section! I'm going to do my best to power through editing several videos over the next week.....loads of good content from this trip! Cheers and enjoy everyone!

  • The Wooden Spoon

    2:37

Hand carved wooden spoons have always made me thing of the old time mountain men..... like Dick Proenneke. Building his log cabin on Twin Lakes, in a remote part of Alaska... literally building everything from the ground up.

A little bit of inspiration while I was chopping up logs for the winter. One chunk of red Oak looked like it would be perfect for a spoon.... So I carved it up, and it didn't turn out to bad. Beginners luck I guess.

Finished it with some butchers block oil, and now its ready to take out into the wilderness.

    Have a great weekend everybody!
