Was the Moon Landing faked? | Neil deGrasse Tyson | Big Questions
Neil deGrasse Tyson joined us to answer our biggest questions on climate change, God, AI and more. Order your copy of Letters from an Astrophysicist now:
Neil deGrasse Tyson is arguably the most influential, acclaimed scientist on the planet. As director of the Hayden Planetarium, and host of Cosmos and StarTalk, he has dedicated his life to exploring and explaining the mysteries of the universe.
Every year, he receives thousands of letters – from students to prisoners, scientists to priests. Some seek advice, others yearn for inspiration; some are full of despair, others burst with wonder. But they are all searching for understanding, meaning and truth.
His replies are by turns wise, funny, and mind-blowing. In this, his most personal book by far, he covers everything from God to the history of science, from aliens to death. He bares his soul – his passions, his doubts, his hopes. The big theme is everywhere in these pages: what is our place in the universe?
The result is an awe-inspiring read and an intimate portal into an incredible mind, which reveals the power of the universe to start conversations and inspire curiosity in all of us.

Space experts react to the Apollo 11 Moon landings
Half a century ago, a human set foot on the moon for the first time. Nature invited three experts to rewatch the highlights of the landing, reflecting on the Apollo missions' huge significance to humanity and to science. Sara Russell and Marissa Lo are researchers who study the moon, and Wally Funk was the youngest of the 'Mercury 13' women who underwent - and passed - many of the same tests as the Apollo 11 astronauts.

Hear Buzz Aldrin tell the story of the first Moon landing
Buzz Aldrin was the second man to set foot on the Moon. In February 2016 Aldrin came to the Science Museum in London to tell the story of the historic mission in his own words.
On 16 July 1969, Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on its way to becoming the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon. Aboard were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin - the three brave men who made the historic journey. On 20 July, Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon and Aldrin joined him on the lunar surface soon after. The Moon walk lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours while the pair collected lunar samples and conducted experiments.

True Stories about the Apollo 11 Moon Landing
Fifty years ago, Apollo 11 began its voyage into American history. And if you've ever had questions about it - we have 5 answers for you! (and they're really weird).
The Saturn V rocket carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:32 a.m. on July 16, 1969 — and just four days later, man first set foot on the moon. The moon mission was a milestone in human history. But it was also a groundbreaking moment in broadcast television, as CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite brought the frontier of space to living rooms across America.

Mr. Beat's band:
Mr. Beat on Twitter:
Yes, we landed on the moon, but it’s been almost 45 years since we’ve been back there. Heck, it’s been almost 45 years since we went beyond low Earth orbit.
And when I say “we,” I mean the United States. Only 12 humans have ever walked on the surface of the moon, all of them men, and all of them American. The last two to be there were Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt. That was in December of 1972, of the Apollo 17 mission.
It’s easy to understand why people would be skeptical. Skeptics often point to the motive for wanting to fake the whole thing. The race to the moon was part of the Space Race, during a particularly tense time during the Cold War. The United States and Soviet Union were battling it out to get there first. Skeptics say the United States would have wanted to fake it to show they won the Space Race even if they knew it actually wasn’t possible to go. The Soviet Union had epically failed to ever get even near the moon, so they argue it seems suspicious that the United States able to land men safely on the moon six times in 3 and a half years, yet never do so since. Was this just a publicity stunt, faked in order to strongly discourage the Soviet Union and give the United States a huge advantage in the Cold War while saving its lots of money?
But how could this hoax be pulled off? Skeptics argue the technology did exist to recreate a fake mooning landing in a film studio. Sure, they argue the astronauts really did take off into space, but they likely just orbited the earth for several days before landing back on Earth, while faked footage was distributed to the masses.
But what evidence do that have of the moon landings being faked? For the rest of this video, I will first give you evidence that creates doubt, then give you NASA’s response, and then give you my conclusion.
The first thing that causes doubt is the footage showing the American flag on the moon waving. Skeptics say the flag waving shows the presence of wind, which should be impossible on the moon because it doesn’t have much of an atmosphere and is surrounded by a vacuum. NASA insists that the flag moved due to astronaut Buzz Aldrin twisting the flagpole, causing it to move like that. Apparently the astronauts also accidentally bent the horizontal rods that were supposed to hold the flag outward.
The next evidence that causes doubt is the fact that there were no stars in any of the footage or photographs taken by NASA on the moon. Skeptics say stars were left out because astronomers would have been able to use them to determine whether the photos were taken from the Earth or Moon. NASA, as well as many many others, argue that of course you wouldn’t be able to see the stars because the moon’s surface is so bright. It’s the same reason why you can’t see the stars standing on a bright football field at night. Some astronauts were able to take long exposure UV photographs of bright stars and Venus from the moon, though. But skeptics would probably argue these photos were taken from earth.
What about the fact that there was no blast crater from the lunar module on the moon, especially when scientists before predicted one would be created? Well NASA says those scientists predicted wrong. The fact is, the pressure on the moon was simply too low for the lunar module to create a crater.
Quite a bit of discussion by skeptics revolve around the discussion of lighting and shadows in photographs taken on the moon. Shadows are inconsistent and often intersect in photographs. Skeptics argue that the shadows should be completely black and run parallel to each other. NASA and others argue that shadows are weird on the Moon due to many light sources and lunar dust. Also, the unique terrain of the moon alters how the shadows are seen.
Skeptics also say the photographs on the Moon show the same exact background, despite astronauts saying the photos were taken far away from each other. They argue that the backdrop was basically kept the same, even for different Apollo missions. Take this photograph, for example. Skeptics have combined the two pictures and claim the backgrounds match. Pretty crazy, eh? Well, NASA says that because the Moon is much smaller than Earth, horizons appear closer to the naked eye than they really are, and thus may look identical from different viewpoints.

Apollo 11: Landing on the Moon
On July 20, 1969, humans walked on another world for the first time in history, achieving the goal that President John F. Kennedy had set in 1961, before Americans had even orbited the Earth. After a landing that included dodging a lunar crater and boulder field just before touchdown, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the area around their lunar landing site for more than two hours.
When the lunar module landed at 4:17 p.m EDT, only 30 seconds of fuel remained. Armstrong radioed Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed. Mission control erupted in celebration as the tension breaks, and a controller tells the crew You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again.

In addition to their sample collection activities, the Apollo 11 crew performed several experiments on the lunar surface. The results of some of these experiments were either radioed to Earth by the crew or returned to Earth for laboratory analysis.

(19 Jul 2009) HEADLINE: Apollo 11: 40 years later some refuse to believe
CAPTION: Forty years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon some still insist the entire mission was a hoax put on by the federal government. (July 19)
[Notes:apollo launch (courtesy NASA)]
It's quite possibly the greatest achievement of mankind.
The Eagle has landed

40 years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, took the first steps on the Moon.
That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
It was a crowning moment for the U-S in particular and the scientific world in general.
[Notes:go to Sibrel and then the set up of the moon lander at Air and space]
But, believe it or not, a small number of people still insist these steps took place in a sound stage and that the Apollo Eleven mission was one of the greatest government cover-ups in history.
(SOT Bart Sibrel)
This is not a theory that they didn't go. It's an absolute fact that they didn't go.
Bart Sibrel (sih- brel - like in umbrella) is one of these people.
In fact he's made a number of movies on this documenting what he says are inconsistencies that he argues shows the whole thing was a hoax.
The footage that we have shows them faking being half way to the moon. That proves they couldn't go half way because they are faking being halfway. They all had identical equipment so if my volkswagen can't go 500 mph none of them can so that means none of them were able to leave earth orbit.
[Notes:footage from his movie, courtesy moonmovie.com]
That footage is this.
It's material he says shows the astronauts used cardboard to make the Earth appear farther away than it really was, thus hiding the fact they never left Earth's orbit never mind went to the moon.
[Notes:dissolve to mall scene]
Don't see it? Well, neither do a lot of people and most Americans aren't buying his argument.
I definitely think we went to the moon.
How could you not believe?
It was there, it was real, what can I say?
[Notes:people looking at Apollo 11 craft]
But these folks are no experts so we turned to a few including one man who got to circle the moon.
(SOT William Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut)
They were fake. We did them at Roswell, smoke mirrors you know dry ice.
No they were pretty real as far as I know. But I only know Apollo 8 so I don't know if Neil and Buzz actually pulled it off, it looked to me like they actually did.
This is no laughing matter though to historians.
[Notes:Launius walk up]
Roger Launius is a senior curator at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and says he's dealt with this for awhile.
SOT Roger Launius
look here's the bottom line we did indeed go to the moon
[Notes:chaikin lead in --no broll of him]
Author Andrew Chaikin also has some pretty strong words on the non-believers, too.
(SOT Andrew Chaikin)
They are sadly misinformed. They are indulging themselves in willful ignorance they are an embarrassment to the great efforts of the countless men and women who made Apollo a reality.
[Notes:moon rocks, close up of landing modular]
But they say that perhaps the best evidence that we went there is what didn't happen.
Of course, don't expect Sibrel to buy that.
