  • How to choose a motherboard: Your 2020 buying guide

    8:07

This video will walk you through the basic factors you’ll need to consider when choosing a motherboard, including what processor family you want to go with and whether you plan on overclocking. If you’re looking to build your own PC, the motherboard you choose will serve as the foundation. Your motherboard determines many of the other components that you’ll be able to use in your system, while other components, like your processor, determine which motherboards you’ll have to choose from.

How to look good on zoom with glasses. If you have glasses you know that a lot of times you can see the computer screen reflected and whatever light you have lighting you. Whether you call them reflections or glare, the truth is they suck because it's distracting and hides your eyes.

  • Mark Blyth - A Brief History of How We Got Here and Why

    1:27:14

This lecture is part of the McMaster Department of Philosophy's Summer School in Capitalism, democratic solidarity, and Institutional design

This lecture sets out a brief history of two versions of capitalist software. The first drove the capitalist hardware during the period known as the Great Compression—1945 to 1980. The second did the same for the period many refer to as the era of neoliberalism—1980 to 2008. This lecture describes the bug in the system that crashed the first version of the capitalist software and the subsequent design of the neoliberal software. It also describes the bug that led to the 2008 Great Recession, landing us in the current transitional period that we might describe as the era of neonationalism or Global Trumpism. A key idea is that the emergence of contemporary populist politics, both left-wing and right-wing Trumpist variants, are attempts to rewrite the software of capitalism once again.

  • What Staring At A Screen All Day Is Doing To Your Brain And Body | The Human Body

    3:38

Americans spend more than seven hours a day starting at digital screens. This screen time often leads to blurred vision, eyestrain, and long-term vision problems like nearsightedness. What’s more, screens emit blue light, which disrupts our circadian rhythms at night when we’re trying to fall asleep. And all of this screen time might even change our brains. A new and ongoing study supported by the NIH found that some pre-teens who clocked over seven hours a day on screens had differences in parts of their brains compared to kids who spent less time on screens.

Following is a transcript of the video:

It’s 11:00 pm. You should be asleep. But you’re watching a video on your phone. Tomorrow, you’ll wake up and go to work, where you’ll stare at your computer for 8 hours. When you get home, you’ll watch a movie on TV. And if you’re anything like the average American adult, you spend more than 7 hours a day staring at digital screens.

So, what’s all this screen time actually doing to your body and brain? Humans didn’t evolve to stare at bright screens all day. And our eyes are suffering the consequences. An estimated 58% of people who work on computers experience what’s called Computer Vision Syndrome. It’s a series of symptoms that include:

    - eyestrain
    - blurred vision
    - headaches
    - and neck and back pain

And long-term, this amount of screen time could be damaging our vision permanently. Since 1971, cases of nearsightedness in the US have nearly doubled, which some scientists partly link to increased screen time. And in Asia today, nearly 90 percent of teens and adults are nearsighted. But it’s not just the brightness of our screens that affects us. It’s also the color. Screens emit a mix of red, green, and blue light — similar colors in sunlight. And over millennia, it was blue wavelengths in sunlight that helped us keep our circadian rhythms in sync with our environment. But since our circadian rhythms are more sensitive to blue light than any others,

A problem occurs when we use our screens at night. Typically, when the sun sets, we produce the hormone melatonin. This hormone regulates our circadian rhythms, helping us feel tired and fall asleep. But many studies have found that blue light from screens can disrupt this process.

For example, in one small study, participants who spent 4 hours reading e-books before bed for 5 nights produced 55% less melatonin than participants who read print books. What’s more, the e-book readers reported that they:

    - Were more alert before bed
    - Took longer to fall asleep and reach a restorative REM state
    - And were more tired the next morning

But perhaps the most concerning changes we’re starting to see from all this screen time is in kids’ brains. An ongoing study supported by the NIH has found that some pre-teens who clocked over 7 hours a day on screens had differences in a part of their brains called the cortex.  That’s the region responsible for processing information from our five senses.

Usually, our cortex gets thinner as we mature. But these kids had thinner cortices earlier than other kids who spent less time on screens. Scientists aren’t sure what this could mean for how the kids learn and behave later in life. But the same data also showed that kids who spent more than 2 hours a day on screens scored lower on thinking and language skill tests.

To be clear, the NIH data can’t confirm if more time spent staring at screens causes these effects. But they’ll have a better idea of any links as they continue to follow and study these kids over the next decade. It’s no doubt that screens have changed the way we communicate. But only time will tell what other changes are on the horizon for humankind.

  • Does Staring At Screens Ruin Your Eyes?

    3:11

We've all grown up thinking that sitting too close to the television, or watching tv for too long is damaging to our eyes. But... that might not be the case! Trace is here to debunk some common vision myths that we've grown up believing.

    Five Vision Myths

Just because something is a common belief doesn't make it true. A lot of things you have probably heard about your vision turn out to be false. Here are five common myths that have no basis in science.

    Eye Health Myths and Facts

Many parents grew up with medical adages or advice that have since been proven by scientists to be incorrect or outdated. Here is a review of five common myths about children's eye health and the medical reality behind them, prepared by the physicians at The Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Does Sitting Too Close To The TV Really Hurt My Eyes?

Sitting too close to the television (or computer, for that matter) may not cause permanent eye damage, but it definitely can cause eyestrain (as many office workers can tell you after a long day staring at their computer screens).

    Vision Facts and Myths

Old wives' tales abound about the eyes. From watching TV to eating carrots, here's the lowdown on some vision facts and fiction.

FYI: Could I Have Prevented My Nearsightedness If I'd Just Spent More Time Outside As A Kid?

My parents were right!! A spate of studies over the past decade has found that kids who spend more time outdoors are less likely to develop near-sightedness.
    Computer Use and Eyestrain

Staring at your computer screen, smartphone, video game or other digital devices for long periods won't cause permanent eye damage, but your eyes may feel dry and tired.

Time Outdoors And The Prevention Of Myopia

Recent epidemiological evidence suggests that children who spend more time outdoors are less likely to be, or to become myopic, irrespective of how much near work they do, or whether their parents are myopic.

How to keep reality TV from ruining your life, or, 9 tips to make TV-watching a source of happiness.

At lunch today, I was part of a spirited conversation on the pros and cons of reality TV. That's a broad category, of course, covering a wide range of shows from The Real Housewives to American Idol to Jersey Shore to Project Runway. My older daughter loves that show where they do fancy cake decorations — what's it called?

TV is significant for happiness — if for no other reason, because of the time involved. In terms of hours, watching TV is probably the world's most popular pastime. Among Americans, it's the most common free-time activity -- for an average of about five hours a day. It's a source of relaxing fun.

But while television is a good servant, it's a bad master. It can swallow up huge quantities of our lives, without much happiness bang for the buck.

Here are nine tips for keeping TV-watching a source of happiness:

    1. Watch TV with someone else. We enjoy all activities more when we're with other people, and we tend to find things funnier when we're with other people. Use TV as an excuse to get together. Sports TV, awards TV, and competition TV, in particular, are a lot more fun to watch with other people. In fact, you can even...

    2. Use TV as a bridge. If you're having trouble connecting with someone -- your sweetheart or your teenager, say — try joining that person when he or she is watching TV (even if football or Top Chef isn't necessarily your favorite). Watching TV is companionable, you share an experience, you can comment on the action here and there for a bit of conversation...it's a way of showing someone that you want his or her company and engaging in a low-key, pleasant, undemanding way. One of my resolutions is to Enter into the interests of other people, and lately I've been trying to show a greater interest in SpongeBob.

    3. Record shows. Recording shows allows you to use your time more efficiently. You can skip the commercials and watch a particular show according to your own schedule and mood. Also, interaction with actual real live people is the most important element to happiness, so you don't want to leave your friend's house early because you need to get home to catch a show.

    4. Don't record shows. Anticipation is an important aspect of happiness. Looking forward to a certain day and time so will heighten the pleasure you'll take in your favorite show. And it's fun to think that you're sitting down at the same time with people across the country to see what's next for those crazy kids on Vampire Diaries. Also, you'll be able to enjoy reading about it right away (see #5), without worrying about spoilers.

    5. Enjoy the commercials. This is particularly easy if you rarely watch TV. An enormous amount of ingenuity and creativity goes into commercials, and they can be fascinating if you pay attention.

    6. Learn about TV. The more you know about anything, the more interesting it becomes. Read some TV criticism, read some interviews with the creative people involved in the show, become more knowledgeable.

    7. Don't surf. Especially if you're feeling frazzled and overwhelmed with multi-tasking, sit down, start watching, sink into the experience, and stay on one channel. Let the show unfold in its time slot, don't keep switching around to catch bits and pieces of other shows. Be a satisficer, not a maximizer.

    8. Do surf. One of the joys of watching cable TV is the cornucopia of shows on display. As is oft remarked, So many channels, yet so little to watch — but nevertheless I love seeing the variety of sports, music, pop culture, dance, movies of all sorts, old TV shows, religious programs, history...it's fascinating. (Btw, surfing is so addictive because of the phenomenon of intermittent reinforcement: activities that sometimes, unpredictably, do yield a big, juicy reward -- Look, Tootsie is on! — and sometimes don't -- Is this infomercial really the best thing on TV right now? — tend to have an addictive quality.)

    9. Choose to watch TV. This sounds obvious, but often, we don't really choose TV, it's just the easy default activity. Make the effort to ask yourself, What would I like to do for the next hour? before you plop down with the remote control.

Bottom line: if you watch TV mindfully and purposefully, it can be a source of happiness, especially if you use it to connect with other people. If you watch it passively, automatically, and for want of anything better to do, it can be a drain on happiness.

** What do we mean by the term screen time, exactly?
Screen time as a term isn't that useful, because it doesn't really tell you what you're doing on screen. It's kind of like if someone asks you what you had for lunch, and you say food -- that doesn't provide any real info. And not all screen time is created equal. Context matters. Spending 4 hours creating a video for YouTube is WAY different than spending 4 hours watching cat videos. How you feel about and how you process each of those situations won't be the same, so lumping them all under screen time doesn't make much sense.

** So is screen time good or bad for us?
Our digital lives can take a physical toll on us -- multiple studies have shown that excess screen time can lead to bad sleep. And some researchers even use the term addiction when talking about how we interact with our devices, although there's a lot of debate on whether or not screen time can be a bona fide addiction like gambling. And there is some research that found that the more time people spent in front of screens, the more it affected their well-being -- their chances of developing depression and suicidal thoughts went up.

On the flip side, screens allow us to stay connected with people. Sure, some people have to deal with feeling overwhelmed because of drama or feeling pressure to only post a highlight reel of themselves to make them look good to others. But, in many studies, a majority of teens say that social media mainly helps the relationships they already have with their friends. And when you look at stuff like multiplayer video games, Twitch streams, or Reddit, wandering around online allows you to find your tribe. If you don't quite fit in where you live, or you live in a small or isolated community, QUALITY screen time might be essential to keeping you sane.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing though. He obviously is very observant and he picks things up very easily. Because of that, I am going to have be very careful of what I say and do around him. 5 months old and he is already tech savvy. He's growing up so fast!

    Spending and credit cards

There is also a lot of evidence that consumers spend more money when paying with credit cards than when they are spending cash. For example, Drazen Prelec and Duncan Simester reported studies on this topic in a 2001 issue of Marketing Letters.

  • How Much Screen Time Is Too Much for Children?

    3:58

This is the VOA Special English Technology Report from |

Children can spend hours a day looking at computer screens and other digital devices. Some eye care professionals say all that screen time has led to an increase in what they call computer vision syndrome.Nathan Bonilla-Warford is an optometrist in Tampa, Florida, with VSP, Vision Service Plan, a big insurance provider. He says, I see a lot more children who are coming into the office either because their parents have noticed that they have headaches or red or watery eyes or discomfort, or because their prescription, their near-sightedness, appears to be increasing at a fast rate and they're worried. Dr. Bonilla-Warford says part of the problem is that children may be more likely than adults to ignore early warning signs. Even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, they're less likely to tell their parents, because they don't want to have the game or the computer or whatever taken away. He says another part of the problem is that people blink less often when they use digital devices. The average person who uses a computer or an electronic device blinks about a third as much as we normally do in everyday life. So the front part of the eye gets dry. Eye doctors offer suggestions like following what is known as the 20/20/20 rule. Every twenty minutes, look away twenty feet or more for at least twenty seconds from whatever device you're using. Twenty feet -- that's six meters. Other suggestions include putting more distance between you and the device and using good lighting. Of course, you could also spend less time looking at screens. Many experts say children should spend no more than two hours a day using digital devices -- with no screen time for children under two. But not all eye doctors have noticed an increase in problems in children. Dr. David Hunter says he has not seen an increase in his practice as a pediatric ophthalmologist at Children's Hospital Boston. He also serves as a spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.Dr. Hunter thinks calling it a syndrome, as in computer vision syndrome, is a little much. He says the real problem is simple. Spending too much time in one place, focusing on one thing. And while this might be tiring to the eyes, he says, there's certainly no evidence that it actually causes any damage to the eyes. • Should I Get a College Minor ?

Getting a college minor or double major is rarely required, however having one can only help your resume. Many students have interests in multiple subjects and want to know if it's worth it to do a double major or even just go for a minor to increase their knowledge. Although it can only help, by adding on that extra workload, you will sacrifice time and probably money. These are the two most important factors to consider. If you are taking out student loans you may not want to pursue a double major that will keep you in school longer than you had planned. Although these do look great on a resume, for many majors it doesn't drastically improve your career. If you do pursue one of these, try to make it very related to your primary major so that there is overlap in the curriculum which will lower the course load.

Note: Not all employers will care about your minor or second major (especially if it's not related to your primary major).
